Libyan migration department spokesman, said on
Tuesday in Tripoli that no fewer than 100 bodies,
presumably of sub-Saharan boat migrants, were
washed up near the Libyan city of Tajoura.
He said the bodies are believed to be victims of a
shipwreck off the western coastal town, located
some 10 kilometres east of Tripoli.
Tajoura is known as a departure spot for Europe-
bound boat migrants.
The spokesman said women and children were
said to be among the dead but authorities could not
yet confirm the exact number of bodies found or
their nationalities.
He said the bodies were being sent to a Tripoli
hospital.
The spokesman said if the number of the dead was
confirmed, it would be the biggest migrant tragedy
since April 18, when 850 people perished in a
single shipwreck off Libya.
Meanwhile, the International Organisation for
Migration, said 1,914 migrants have died in the
Mediterranean since January 1, compared to 1,031
within the same period in 2014.
The organisation said tragedies have become less
frequent since May following a decision by EU
leaders to expand search and rescue efforts. www.punchng.com |

This is for those single ladies who hate dating married men with passion. As for those single ladies who don't care, you can still look out for the following signs, so as for you to know if the man you're going out with is taken , in case he is pretending to be single. 1. If he don't pick your calls at odd hours. This is number one sign that the man is taken. in most of the cases , he will send you a text rather than having a conversation with you. if you see him the following day, you will hear things like I was in a meeting or fast asleep when you called. 2.If he is trying to make the relationship discreet. If your man prefer going out with you towards the evening time, if he is reluctant to show you to his friends, if he can't freely stroll around the neighborhood where he stays with you, chances are ,he is taken. 3.If he don't take you to his place. this is yet another important signal. If he prefer taking you to short time joint or a friend place, then, he may just be married. How do you know if he takes you to a Friend place? just try to know few of his things; clothes, size of his shoes and other accessories. check out all this where ever he takes you., if they not there, it may be a borrowed venue. 4.Depending on how responsible and how much regards he has for his wife, if your man reject the offer of you spending the night with him, hmmmm! he is married. This is because men love puni so very much. 5.If he constantly fail to honour appointment, even when you are always willing to come see him,ir is another pointer towards the fact that he is not a freeman. 6.When he don't invite you to the church where he worship. whenever your man start speaking in tongues when you suggest coming to his place of worship to fellowship with him, don't mistake that for being filled with the holy spirit,he may be a married dude. Add yours. men, bad belle is not allow. |

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that former Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh will coach the Super Eagles with a team that will include a Dutch as an assistant. A manager close to Oliseh in Europe, who has full knowledge of the talks between the NFF and Oliseh in London, confirmed to The PUNCH on Wednesday that the former Eagles captain had accepted the job offer and would work with an assistant from Europe. He said, “I can confirm that Sunny (Oliseh) has accepted the offer and he will be working with an assistant coming down from Europe as well.” On Wednesday, the NFF confirmed they were in talks with the Belgium-based Nigerian to replace Stephen Keshi, who was kicked out as Eagles coach on Saturday. Oliseh met with NFF president Amaju Pinnick and Austin Jay Jay Okocha in London on Tuesday. “An offer has been made, and there is an understanding, but we have to work out the final details of the agreement in a few days. Of course, the Executive Board has to give approval for his appointment based on the final terms to be agreed,” Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee said on Wednesday. The NFF added that Oliseh would come with a “foreign technical assistant, whose job description will centre around development programmes, and working with clubs’ youth teams and certified academies towards developing the game from the grassroots. “Current stand-in coach Salisu Yusuf will also be in the new team, but with greater devotion to the home-based team, otherwise known as Super Eagles B, and will be the interface between the technical crew and the home boys.” From the details of the package being finalised, Oliseh is expected to come up with a five-year developmental plan “to fashion a unique playing and coaching philosophy for all the national teams, and will for this purpose, interface regularly with coaches of those teams. “We are also looking at how he will periodically organise clinics and seminars for coaches of clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League, probably once in a month, so as to strengthen the playing philosophy across board. A robust youth development programme, elite player development strategy and performance programmes to drive higher standards, among other core sustainable development programmes, are also part of the proposal,” Anyansi-Agwu said. NFF President Pinnick said, “Sunday Oliseh has vast experience and immense knowledge of the game, and will certainly add value to what we are doing. He has bought into our vision and objectives towards the development of Nigeria football. He will command the respect of the players and we trust he has the temperament to work harmoniously with the Technical and Development Committee, the Technical Directorate and the Technical Study Group. “On our part at the NFF, we will give him all the support to succeed as we have been giving to all our coaches. Subject to the approval of the NFF Executive Committee, we will conclude negotiations by weekend and he will be unveiled next week.” www.punchng.com

– A 26-year-old woman in Zambia’s
Luwingu district has given birth to pure hair,
according to the Luwingu District Medical Officer, Dr
Ernest Mutale.
The Zambia National Information Services (ZANIS)
on Wednesday reported the woman had been 10
months pregnant and she gave birth to pure hair
and a little blood.
According to Dr Mutale, the woman, a Ms. Mwape,
was referred to Luwingu District Hospital from
Chikoyi rural health centre after she gave birth to
something that looked like Brazilian hair.
Mutale explained that Mwape is a mother of two
children and this bizarre pregnancy was her third.
He said that after a medical check-up, Mwape
narrated that she was feeling as though the
pregnancy was normal as she would feel the baby
kicking in her womb.
The Luwingu District Medical Officer said that
Mwape attended ante-natal regularly but her
medical records showed that there were no
irregular movements.
He said that the medical team suspected Mwape
had a molar pregnancy but after several medical
check-ups results showed that it was not.
Report says Mwape is still admitted to Luwingu
District Hospital waiting further medical check-ups. www.vanguardngr.com |
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is the retrovirus that leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. Globally, about 35 million people are living with HIV, which constantly adapts and mutates creating challenges for researchers. Now, scientists at the University of Missouri are gaining a clearer idea of what a key protein in HIV looks like, which will help explain its vital role in the virus’ life cycle. Armed with this clearer image of the protein, researchers hope to gain a better understanding of how the body can combat the virus with the ultimate aim of producing new and more effective antiviral drugs. In recent years, scientists have used various techniques to determine the structure of the capsid protein, which is the building block of an inner shell of HIV. Until now, the clearest image had been of a mutated protein. Stefan Sarafianos, an associate professor of molecular microbiology and immunology and the Chancellor’s Chair of Excellence in molecular virology in the University of Missouri School of Medicine, and his team captured long sought detailed images of the capsid protein in its natural state. “The capsid shell acts as an ‘invisibility cloak’ that hides the virus’ genetic information, the genome, while it is being copied in a hostile environment for the virus,” said Sarafianos, who also holds an appointment in the Department of Biochemistry in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and serves as a researcher at the Bond Life Sciences Center. “Fine-tuned capsid stability is critical for successful infection: too stable a capsid shell and the cargo is never delivered properly; not stable enough and the contents are detected by our immune defenses, triggering an antiviral response. Capsid stability is a key to the puzzle, and you have to understand its structure to solve it.” Sarafianos and his team created the most complete model yet of an HIV capsid protein. The research team used a technique called X-ray crystallography to unravel the protein’s secrets. By taking many copies of the protein, they coaxed them into forming a patterned, crystalline lattice (see photo). “With X-ray crystallography, the biggest challenge is to get protein crystals of good quality that will allow researchers to accurately study the protein,” said Anna Gres, an MU graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and first author of the study. “Sometimes this process can take years, but by using advanced techniques, we were able to cut that down considerably.” Next they shot high-powered X-ray beams at the crystal. By interpreting how the X-rays scattered when they ricocheted off the proteins, the researchers made a 3-D map of the protein. “But the 3-D map doesn’t make sense until we make an atomic model of the protein to fit in that map,” said Karen Kirby, a research scientist at Bond LSC and co-author of the study. “The map is just a grid that you can’t really interpret unless you put a model into it to see ‘Ok, it looks like this part is here, and that part is there, and this is how the protein is put together.’” Gres constructed the model, which surprisingly revealed “ordered” water molecules at areas between the viral proteins. www.punchng.com
