Career / How Is Your Relationship With Your Boss? Good Or Bad? by CareerHubAfrica: 1:27pm On Jun 16, 2017
If you want to have a successful career, it is very important to build a healthy relationship with not only your co-workers but your boss as well.

Not all employees are fortunate to have fantastic bosses who are supportive, encouraging, competent, and confident. Many of them have difficult bosses who kill their desire to engage and contribute at work, leaving them feeling undervalued and looking for an escape route.

We once heard of the story of an employee who resigned from his position at a top company and on his final day of work, he went to the HR asking for his resignation letter back. When he was asked why he wanted to recall the resignation, he said “My manager is also joining the same company I am going to work for. I would like to stay back since he is leaving”. This might sound funny but sadly, it is the situation most employees find themselves in. It is actually no surprise that employees who quit their jobs are most frequently leaving their bosses, not necessarily the company or their jobs. Difficult bosses vary in personality, some are pushy or rude, while some others are downright abusive.

Thankfully, there are strategies that can help you better manage a difficult boss. Therefore, before you start planning an exit strategy, try these strategies first: Read here ....http://www.careerhubafrica.com/blog/deal-difficult-boss/

Career / Did You Know That Social Media Can Reduce Your Chances Of Landing That Job? by CareerHubAfrica: 3:12pm On Apr 27, 2017
Social media has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Nowadays there is nothing you won’t find on social media. Companies not only use it to reach their target audience but also to search for suitable candidates to hire.

While social media is a great way to connect with family, friends, colleagues, know about latest job vacancy and also find information about potential companies/employers etc. it has the power to make or break your career. Many employers and recruiters use social networks to screen potential job candidates. This means they look through your social media profiles and evaluate your character and personality based on the kind of posts you have there. Negative posts and comments can put them off and this will, in turn, affect their hiring decisions.

Here are 3 things you do on social media that can prevent you from getting hired:

Provocative or Inappropriate Photos and Information

Many recruiters have had to reject a candidate because they found inappropriate photos and information (drinking, drug use, vulgar words, etc.) on their social networks. While you might think that this is your personal life and has nothing to do with your performance on the job, remember that you will be representing the company you work for, and your behaviour can have an impact on the company as well. You need to be mindful of the kind of info you put out there and know the limit as to what is acceptable and what is not.

Contents Bad Mouthing Previous Employers

Regardless of your bad experience with your former employer, badmouthing an ex-employer on social media is reckless and can hurt your career. No employer would want to hire someone who would do the same thing to their company.

False Qualifications

As a result of the competition for available jobs in the job market, jobseekers put themselves forward in the best possible light, so as to stand out from the crowd. You find some of them going as far as lying about their qualifications just to get seen. Sometimes when recruiters visit a candidate’s social media profile for example LinkedIn, they find qualifications and skills different from what he (the jobseeker) has on his CV. This can automatically disqualify him.

If you’re searching for a new job, you might want to clean up your social media accounts, much of what you post to the Internet and in some cases what others post about you can be found by potential employers, and this can affect your chances of getting hired. Take down anything that could be viewed as unprofessional and inappropriate by potential employers.

Career / The CV Summary Statement Vs Objective – Any Difference? by CareerHubAfrica: 4:38pm On Apr 25, 2017
The purpose of a CV is to “sell” your professional expertise to the employer/recruiter. The summary statement or career objective is the first “advertisement” of your skills and expertise that they will see. It gives an employer/recruiter a quick idea of who you are and what sort of work you’re looking for.

A lot of people don’t understand the difference between a summary statement and a career objective. This article will tell you how they differ and when to use them. Click to read http://www.careerhubafrica.com/blog/cv-summary-statement-vs-objective-difference/
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Is Wrong With This CV Kindly Review It For Me Pls by CareerHubAfrica: 4:56pm On Apr 24, 2017
After reviewing your CV. We happened to find the following things wrong with your CV:

1. Irrelevant info e.g permanent address and so on. Choose just one address and don't specify if it is permanent or not.
2. Some misspellings
3. Write your skills in the same column and should come after your experience.
4. Use proper wordings e.g "Ability To Work With Group, Motivate And Achieve Stated Goals". can be replaced with "work well in a team" or "great team player". that makes it easier for your reader to understand.
5. Use proper formatting e.g. Put spaces in between each point
6. Write your past responsibilities in past tense, as it is already past.
7. Write your qualifications and membership in the same column

Hope this helps!

The problem is not that sexual harassment exists in the workplace,
the real challenge is that many of the victims do not see themselves
as one and without a victim, it is impossible to tackle a crime.
@CareerHubAfrica Most stories about sexual harassment against men are usually
told as a joke by the "victims" which essentially lessen the gravity
of the act.
yes, it is often told as a joke, but underneath that joke told by the victim, lies pain, shame, anger, and frustration. The victim might make a joke out of it because they feel it won't be seen as a real problem.

I think the best way to eradicate this is to establish a law and government institution to deal with it. If their is no law where the victim isn't protected it ll continue but when law protects victim and institution prosecute it ll reduce but its difficult to eradicate unless the difference between the poor and the rich is reduced to a minimal.

Career / Men Are Subject To Sexual Harassment At Work More Often Than We Think!!! by CareerHubAfrica: 5:14pm On Apr 21, 2017
Google ‘Sexual Harassment in the Workplace’ and you will discover that 90 percent of the image results you see depicts a woman being harassed by a man.

Women are 9 times more vulnerable to sexual harassment at work than men. This may be true, but have you ever stopped to think how often men are subjected to such things?

Sexual harassment is an unwanted sexual advance or request for sexual favor usually done physically or verbally. It can be from boss to subordinate, supervisor to subordinate or even co-worker to co-worker. Sexual harassment is a silent epidemic that has eaten deep into the Nigerian workplace. Actually, it has become so common that people are beginning to see it as a norm. Statements like these have become the order of the day – “As long as there is a boss and a subordinate somewhere, irrespective of gender, there will always be sexual harassment”. “It is normal”. “Don’t make a big deal out of it”. To make it worse, the economic situation of the country makes many succumb to harassment, even when they find it disturbing. They refuse to speak up for fear of losing their jobs.

Undoubtedly, men are responsible for a good number of sexual harassment in the workplace. But men are also targets and victims of this same menace, and we often forget that. Maybe it seems like it doesn’t exist because most men actually deal with the harassment head on and then shrug it off. Let me give you a typical scenario.

Jane, a female staff of a small food processing company, harassed a new intern assigned to work with her department. She constantly made snide comments and asked him offensive questions like “How large is your pen***”.

At some point, she started taking it as far as groping him whenever they were alone in the office. This intern tried many times to tell her off nicely but she wouldn’t oblige. He dealt with it silently and never reported her to the authorities because he had seen her couple of times going in and out of the CEO’s office at odd times including after work hours. He thinks she is actually sleeping with the boss and if he reports this, he would be out the door before you say jack!

This is just one of many scenarios, cases like this go on in our workplaces on a daily basis. Harassment is the same, be it to a male or female and should be treated the same. The disturbing experience of harassment leaves the victim often frustrated, depressed and angry. As it is considered normal office culture, many people who go through this don’t feel confident that the problem is big enough for them to speak up.

What can we do to eradicate this bug eating itself through our workplaces?

Nigeria does not have very stringent rules with regards sexual harassment. Some people think reporting harassment cases is completely useless. Because even those you are reporting to are somewhat guilty of the same offence and you might end up with nothing or even lose the job.

So what can we do to stop this?

What do you suggest? Leave your comments below.

Career / 4 Financial Mistakes You’re Probably Making… And Don’t Even Know It by CareerHubAfrica: 12:56pm On Apr 11, 2017
I can still remember vividly how imprudent I was when I got my first promotion at work. You know that kind of feeling you get when you just received a huge chunk of money. It was the first time I owned that kind of money, so I felt on top of the world. The first thing that came to my mind was shopping. It suddenly occurred to me that I had so many things I needed to purchase and this was the moment I had been waiting for, so I hit the market. I even got some items on credit which required a hefty monthly payment. I didn’t have a problem with it because I felt my monthly paycheck was just enough to take care of that. But as the months went by, I realised that I had roped myself into a very tight corner. Many debts to pay off, no savings, no investments. In fact, I found myself back in the same spot I was in before the promotion. This recounts the story of a young accountant who made terrible mistakes with her first huge income.

Sounds familiar? This can happen to anybody. Many of us go off the rails with our finances the moment we get our first big raise. It is actually very easy to make very bad mistakes when you feel you have a lot of money at your disposal.

In this post, we will show you 5 financial mistakes people often make when they get a pay raise and how you can avoid them:

Compulsive Spending

You have been dying to get that new iPhone Apple just rolled out, and as soon as you got that raise you rushed to the nearest Apple store and purchased it. That is compulsive spending! This is usually linked to the excessive availability of huge finances. Moreover, when people have a lot of money at their disposal, they tend to spend blindly. Don’t go running to stores purchasing things just because you want it and not because you need it.

Know the difference between “needs” and “wants”. There is a big difference between what you want and what you need. Needs are the basic things that you require to live your daily life. While Wants are things that are not really necessary but you desire or wish to have them. Learn how to manage your expenses and put a limit on your spending.

Going for Credits

Just like the accountant in our story, many people purchase things on credit hoping to pay for it monthly as the paycheck comes in. It is best to use this strategy when you are sure you can pay off within a short period of time, not one that will spread out for a long period of time. Even if you must use this strategy, do not do it excessively (purchasing so many things of high value at the same time).

An alternative to taking credits could be, saving up from that raise to purchase that item later, if it happens that you really need it.

Not Reviewing your Personal Budget

Your budget plan before the promotion/raise should not be the same as now. The moment your monthly income increases, you should review your personal budget as well. This enables you to stay right on target and also manage your finances properly.

No Savings

The fact that you have an extra income now doesn’t mean you should throw your savings habit out the window. You might feel that you do not need to put money aside as you have enough to take care of any emergency that might occur. Strike out that thought!

In the case you lose that job, what would you fall back on? You never know what the future brings. Even if you don’t lose your job, you may need to take a big step higher in your life or your career, like starting your own business. That extra cash stacked away will definitely be of great use.

Continue to save and if you never used to save before, start doing that now! It is very important.

Financial freedom is something everyone wants to achieve but achieving this without having the right financial plan is nearly impossible. Make proper financial plans for your future.

Harassment is not something to be taken lightly, it is illegal. You should be very sure you're reading the message clearly before reacting to it. He will likely be investigated, and it could hurt his reputation if it turns out you got things wrong. However, if you are sure you are being harassed at work, back up your story with evidence then take the following steps to resolve it.

1. Talk to him. Tell him that his behavior is bothering you. and ask him to stop. please do this politely. but if he fails to listen and continues then that's when you should react.

2. If the issue doesn't quickly resolve itself, consider talking to your HR, they know how to handle things like this. Note that if you claim you're being harassed, then the HR department will likely need to conduct an investigation around the issue.

3. Never go about badmouthing him, it will only aggravate the issue.

Why not consider a career as a Recruitment Consultant! This article will give an insight on how you can become one.

The Job

A Recruitment Consultant acts as the link between prospective candidates and employers. He/she builds relationships with client companies in order to gain a better understanding of their recruitment needs and requirements. When he must have gotten the necessary requirements, he goes out there to source for the right candidates, then matches them to temporary or permanent positions with these client companies.

The Recruitment Consultant attracts candidates by drafting an advertising copy for use in different media, as well as by networking, headhunting and through referrals. He/she screens the candidates, do a background check on them and interview them before handing over to the clients.

He also provides advice to both clients and candidates on salary levels, training requirements and career opportunities.

Working Hours and Salary

Long working hours are common with this job role and may include evenings. The work is office based, but time is also spent outside the office, meeting with clients and interviewing candidates.

Self-employment or freelance work is possible, but generally only for consultants who have expert knowledge of a specific sector.

Salaries for recruitment consultants vary across sectors and locations but typically include a basic salary plus a performance-related bonus or commission. This can either be an individual, team or branch bonus.

Some vacancies will advertise high OTE (on-target earning) salaries even for trainees. Promise of an initial high salary very much depends on your sales performance.

Other benefits may include training, cars, mobile phones, laptops, pension schemes, and end-of-year rewards for the top billing consultant or department.

Entry Requirements/Qualification

Entry into this career is generally open to graduates regardless of the degree subject. You can also start this career with an HND or a diploma. Having any relevant experience, skill or ability is a plus.

Postgraduate study is not essential, but continuous training and certifications are very useful.

Training and Certifications

On-the-job training is offered to Trainee Consultants for the first few months. Larger firms offer induction or skills training for new staff members entering as Trainee Recruitment Consultants.

Short courses on specific aspects of the industry are either run in-house or by external training providers.

There are certain professional bodies in Nigeria and abroad who offer personal development training and short courses specific to the skills required in the industry. For example:

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria
Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC)
Institute of Recruitment Professionals (IRP)

You can also attend these courses while you are still working in the recruitment industry.

Career Progression

Generally, Recruitment Consultants are required to start work in the industry as trainees working in a branch within a small team. On-the-job training and mentoring is usually provided in the first few months.

This role is target driven and progression largely depends on how well you achieve your targets. Development in this career often depends on the size and structure of the agency you work for and if you work for a small company, you may need to jump ships in order to progress.

Progression in this career is usually in the following order – from a Consultant, you climb the ladder to become a Senior Consultant or Account Manager then progress to Team Leader and other managerial positions such as Branch Manager. Progression to these senior roles will require you to get additional people management and financial skills. For large organisations with many branches, it may be possible to move into area and regional management.

You may also carve your own niche in the industry, and do your own thing. This only depends on how ambitious you are!

Career / Re: How To Answer The Interview Question "What Is Your Salary Expectation?" by CareerHubAfrica: 11:00am On Mar 27, 2017
ubyways:
Ops thanks for the piece. If I'm asked "can we meet u" what would be my respond?
This is usually the first question at job interviews. It can be asked in different ways, depending on the interviewer. It can be asked this way "Can we meet you?", or "Tell me about yourself"

When an interviewer asks you this question, he or she wants to get you talking, he wants to know enough about you which will help him determine if you are a good fit for the job.

Your answer should address the following:

1. Who You Are: Your first sentence should be an introduction of who you are professionally. An overview statement that shows off who you are and gives a little sense of your personality too. Many of us make the mistake of listing all about our personal life. The interviewer does not need that much information, he only wants to know how qualified you are for the position.

2. Highlight Your Selling Points: This could be the years of experience you have in a particular industry or your area of specialization. You might also need to highlight any special training and technical skills you acquired here. Focus on the qualifications in the job description and how you meet and exceed the requirements.

3. Highlight Your Strengths: List five strengths you have that are relevant to the role you are applying for.

4. Why You Are Interested In The Position: You can conclude by indicating why you are looking for a new challenge and why you feel this role is the best next step.

I hope this answered your question.
