Health / David Ibiyeomie: Quoted Out Of Context. by caringsce(m): 10:18am On May 20, 2020
On the 9th of May, 2020, at exact 10:09PM I posted an article on the Health Section tagged “Salvation Ministries Donates Medical Equipments To Help Fight Covid-19 In Rivers.” Unfortunately, it didn’t make front page.

Few days ago, I saw another post on nairaland front page on how David i Ibiyeomie said there is no Coronavirus in Nigeria. He was severely bashed for making such “reckless statement”. What most of you didn’t know was that he was deliberately quoted out of context, which has recently become a norm in the media space.

To set the record straight, David Ibiyeomie never implied there’s no Coronavirus in Nigeria. Does it make sense that the same man that approved the donation of 4 Ventilators, 2 Auto-analyzers, 13 Solar panels, 2 child warmers, 2 Phototherapy and 6 ICU beds for the fight against Covid-19 will come back to say there’s no Coronavirus in Nigeria?

He said from the testimonies of most Covid-19 survivors, one can point to the similarity of the virus to that of malaria. Most survivors were treated with Anti-malaria drugs and Malaria has been endemic in Nigeria for such a long time, and as such Nigerians have been immune to it.

He also echoed the sentiment of most Nigerians that the figures are highly doctored to facilitate corrupts officials in siphoning money, while calling on Federal Government to also provide grants to other States like they did to Lagos and Ogun to reduce tension.

Whether you believe it or not, people have sent their testimonies to the Church on how they were healed of Coronavirus, which was aired via Salvation TV and all media arms of the Church. The Church acknowledges the potency of the virus, and have on different occasions provided palliatives and aid to both State and Federal institutions in the Country to help in its fight against this global threat.

Finally, let’s try and free our hearts from hate. Religious Leaders, though cannot claim to be flawless, but are also not the problem of the common man. We gain nothing by trying to pull others down!

Your statistics is flawed...

You used percentages of overstay in respect to the number of applicants particular to that nation only

You should use population of overstay only, then you would understand better.

What do I mean?
At 15% population of Nigerians overstay is approximately 30,000
But at 30% population of chad overstay might be like 2500, With respect to the number applicants.

In summary the number of overstay from Nigeria might be pretty high to them, forget percentages, our population itself dey high
Did you read this “...while Brazil with 36,289 far exceed Nigeria in Total Overstays still did not make the list.”?

Politics / Reason Nigeria Was Added To Trump’s Restricted Travel List. by caringsce(m): 7:32am On Feb 01, 2020
I read different comments as to why we were added to the list, but most were flawed. I felt compelled to create this thread as to clear the general misconception that we were added because of Nigerians who travelled with NIV’s and decided to overstay.
The recently published Entry/Exit Overstay Report by Homeland Security for Nonimmigrant Visitors admitted to the United States for
business or pleasure via air and sea POEs for VWP(Excluding Canada and Mexico) shows of the 195,785 Nigerians that entered the US, 29,723 overstayed. Meaning 15.18% of Nigerians overstayed their Visits. At such figure, Countries like Burundi(21.52%), Chad (30.78%), Djibouti(44.67%), Eritrea(26.46%), Palau(20.59%), Syria(17.62%) and Yemen (27.92%) all recorded higher overstay rate than Nigeria. What then justifies Burundi, Chad, Djibouti and Palau not making the list? while Brazil with 36,289 far exceed Nigeria in Total Overstays still did not make the list.
Trump, in a proclamation issued Friday, said the countries were chosen after an extensive evaluation that examined travel security and measures, and national security threats in dozens of countries; those that made the list were chosen from a recommendation that U.S. officials made in January.
The Department of Homeland Security explained that Nigeria: Nigeria does not comply with the established identity-management and information-sharing criteria assessed by the performance metrics.
Suspension of entry for Immigrants, except as Special Immigrants whose eligibility is based on having provided assistance to the U.S. Government.

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department who briefed New York Times reporters on the condition of anonymity said While Nigeria has partnered with the American military, the officials noted an “elevated risk and threat environment in the country,” when justifying the travel restrictions.

1) Compressed Natural Gas is actually cleaner than petrol, so it's good for the environment.

2) Nigeria has much more natural gas than crude oil, in other words, we have more gas than petrol.

But there's a problem.

If you check my posts above, you'll notice that this is not a new idea. This issue has been talked about from time to time since the 1980s.

The issue is, who is going to convert the cars from petrol burning cars into compressed natural gas burning cars? Who is going to provide the filling stations?

These are the questions and unfortunately they have not been answered in this write up.
I think what they’re trying to achieve is to create a competitive market. Nobody will be coerced to convert his/her cars. You do the maths, you know the difference between both prices. If you think the difference in price is worth converting your car or getting a new car that’s compatible, good!
There has always been a relationship between demand and supply. We have privately owned fuel stations across town. Once people start using CNG, investors will naturally invest in setting up stations.

No country will give you a visa or renew your visa on an expired passport. This simply means they must have gotten a visa that correspond to the life span or validity of their passport. (Meaning you cant applied to get a one year visa or visa renewal on a 6 months passport validity). So they must have gotten their valid visa on a valid passport. And if you know your passport will be expiring soon, why not go to your embassy and renew it or fly back home to do it?
So the point here is, if they've renewed their passport, they wont be having expired passport issue. And as far as you are having an expired passport, it simply means you cant get a valid visa on such an expired passport. And thats not an excuse. Because for you to stay in another man's country, you definitely need a valid visa. staying in another man's country without visa due to an expired passport is no body's fault but yours. So in all, an expired passport means no valid visa. And staying without valid visa is a crime.
You’re wrong sir. Let’s take US as a case study. The standard Visa issued by US is 24 months which is 2 years. You must have at least 6 months Validity to be able to apply for a US Visa. What it means is that you can have a valid Visa on an expired passport, all you need do is get a new passport and bind both together. While Canada gives you Visa based on the Validity of your passport. So Visa doesn’t necessarily correspond to the validity of passport. Secondly, staying without a valid visa isn’t a crime. You guys fail to understand the meaning of Visa. Visa doesn’t guarantee you an entry into a country, it only ushers you to a point of entry to request permission from an Immigration officer to enter the country. Now, you can have a visa that will expire in 2 weeks and travel to US, if the CBP officers stamps 6 months on your passport, you’re permitted to stay in the Us for 6 months not minding the expiration of your visa in 2 weeks time. Finally, let’s go back to our topic at hand. A country that said all illegal immigrants should vacate their country, isn’t it unwise to start checking the validity of passport?

You’re the deranged villager speaking on a topic you know nothing about. I have been in travel business for years, and you can check www.trekkafrica.com to clear your doubt.
Staying in a foreign country with an expired passport isn’t an offense anywhere in the world. Secondly, expired Visa doesn’t make one an illegal immigrant as well. You only become an illegal immigrant when you either overstay the duration of your visit as indicated by the Immigration officer during entry or you’re an undocumented immigrant. Let’s assume their Visas have all expired and they have also overstayed their visit, hence violating their visas. The worst that can happen is for a travel ban to be imposed on them for whatever duration the SA government approves for such offense. Which will make them ineligible to step into SA again for the duration of the ban. Expired passport can’t stop anybody from returning to his/her country.

I honestly think this reason is lame, except there’s something they’re not telling us. The people to be evacuated are Nigerians with a Nigerian airline. I don’t get how an expired passport will stop them from flying. The view of the immigration officer on arrival is that you are coming home and as such all you need to do is prove citizenship, which an expired passport does.

Politics / UK Court Ruling Over Aborted Project Means Nigeria Will Have To Pay $9bn Damages by caringsce(m): 8:04am On Aug 26, 2019
Nigeria’s government stands accused of letting down its 201 million residents by failing to complete a gas supply and production agreement that would have transformed their lives. Instead, the country will now have to pay $9bn (£7.4bn) in penalties or risk having its assets seized.
The accusation is being levied at the federal republic by lawyers representing Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID), a gas supply and engineering company, following a UK court ruling that paves the way for the seizure of assets belonging to Africa’s richest country. The extraordinary figure represents one-fifth of the country’s declared foreign reserves of $45bn.

“Completely wrong and obviously unjustifiable”, were the words used by Nigerian government officials to describe the ruling by a judge in London last week.
But yesterday, lawyers for P&ID vigorously defended their client’s position. A spokesman said: “Nigeria failed to live up to its contractual commitments … The project would have generated 2,000 MW of power for the national grid and could have been transformative for millions of Nigerians. At present, the World Bank estimates that in 2017, only 59% of the country had access to a reliable supply of electricity.”
The decision, at the commercial court, converted a 2017 arbitration tribunal award into a high court judgment, and gives British Virgin Islands-registered P&ID the right to seize $9bn in assets, following the failed gas supply and processing agreement.
The Nigerian government continues to dispute the UK’s jurisdiction to hear the matter, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the country’s Central Bank (CBN), said in an interview with Africa’s Premium Times: “We know that the implication of that judgment has some impact on monetary policy and that is why the CBN is going to step forward and strongly defend the country and the reserves of the federal republic of Nigeria.”
But unless the Nigerian government can reach a last-minute agreement, its assets are at risk. P&ID’s barrister Andrew Stafford QC said: “P&ID is committed to vigorously enforcing its rights, and we intend to begin the process of seizing Nigerian assets in order to satisfy this award as soon as possible.”
The dispute arose in 2010. Brendan Cahill, founder of P&ID, and his late business partner, Michael Quinn, signed a contract with Nigerian ministry officials in which it was agreed that the government would install pipelines and supply the gas that would connect to P&ID’s “state-of-the-art gas processing plant” in Calabar, south-east Nigeria, to be built free of charge to the state.
The intention was to convert wet natural gas to dry gas to power the country’s national electric grid, improving supply. P&ID would sell 15% of the propane, ethane and butane by-products on the international market, with an expectation of generating “$5bn to $6bn in profit over a 20-year period”. In return, Nigeria would receive 85% of the gas at no cost for generating electricity.
In 2012, however, the deal fell through after the Nigerian government allegedly failed to install pipelines or supply the gas. At the heart of the matter, said the government, was the fact that the company did not build the promised processing plants. P&ID claimed it was the government’s conduct that prevented them from fulfilling their side of the agreement.
In a statement to the tribunal, Cahill explained that he had conceived the idea of processing gas from the Calabar region in 2006, after which P&ID “set about the necessary preparatory engineering work”. He alleges that over two years the company invested more than $40m on feasibility studies, licences, drawings and project management costs, before approaching the Nigerians.

Following several years of negotiations, the parties signed the contract in 2010, during the presidency of Umaru Yar’adua. Cahill alleges that the government failed to provide the necessary technical specifications for him to meet his contract and the parties fell into dispute after he discovered the government was engaging with a third party to process the gas.

During the 2015 tribunal, the Nigerian government argued that P&ID’s failure to build the gas processing plant was a fundamental breach of contract, as no gas could be delivered until this was done. The tribunal dismissed their arguments, finding them in breach of contract.
In January 2017, P&ID were awarded $6.6bn and claimed interest at the rate of $1.2m a day, which increased their claim to more than $9bn.
At the commercial court last week, P&ID sought to convert the tribunal’s award to a high court judgment. The Nigerian government contested the hearing, arguing that as the original contract had been signed in Nigeria, an English court had no jurisdiction, describing the tribunal’s award as “manifestly excessive”. Justice Christopher Butcher found in favour of P&ID, enforcing the $9bn award.

The Nigerian government is considering its next move. Emefiele said: “There are sufficient and strong grounds on the basis of which we could file a stay of execution and also an appeal against that judgment. There are certain anomalies in the process leading to the award of that contract which are currently being looked into by the economic and financial crimes commission.”

Responding to comments by Emefiele, lawyers for P&ID told the Guardian the high court judgment was “clear, decisive and consistent with prior legal findings”.
“It determined that compensation must be paid as it failed to uphold its contractual commitments. The tribunal, which included a former attorney-general of Nigeria, unanimously determined that the FRN was at fault for the project’s failure. Their arguments have been comprehensively rejected.”
The matter is still to be settled in the US, where P&ID are seeking permission to enforce the arbitration award. Nigeria’s defence in the US is the same as those just rejected by the English court.
