Foreign Affairs / Bangkok Sinking, May Be Under Water In 15 Years by CastroTbb(m): 4:11pm On Jul 23, 2015
A study commissioned by the Thai government has found that Bangkok, the country’s capital and most populous city, is seriously endangered by rising sea levels—not just because the city is in a low-lying and flood-prone region, but because of how it is being developed. The proliferation of tall buildings and electric railways has weighed down the city, reports msn, which also quoted the Bangkok Post. In addition, the region relies heavily on underground water pumped from aquifers, and when too much water is drawn out too quickly, the land above it tends to sink. Bangkok routinely suffers from severe flooding during heavy rains. Floods in 2011 were particularly damaging, and prompted predictions that entire swaths of the city would be underwater before 2030. Risk assessment experts warned in 2008 that Bangkok is sinking at a rate of 10 cm (4 inches) per year. Ongoing efforts to fortify the city with flood walls have been slowed by political squabbles and red tape. A member of the commission studying the issue said that an urgently-needed seawall would cost at least 500 billion baht ($14.4 billion). www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/07/23/bangkok-sinking-may-be-underwater-in-15-years/

Career / Lagos Rail Project: Workers Protest As CCECC Sacks 500 by CastroTbb(m): 11:03pm On Jul 22, 2015
Hundreds of staff and casual workers employed by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation, CCECC, for the Lagos Blue Line Light Rail project today stormed the entrance of the Lagos Governor’s Office to protest the sack of about 500 workers by the corporation. The wokers stormed the Governor’s Office, Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Wednesday afternoon with placards to protest their unjust sack by the management of CCECC without severance package. The workers, in a protest letter to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said many of them had been employed by the company for the past five years and were laid off without any form of payment, demanding that the governor intervene in their plight to ensure that what duly belonged to them was paid by CCECC. Spokesperson of the protesters, Mark Okila, who lost one arm while working for CCECC said the sacked worker said the protesters would want CCECC to pay the casual workers sacked N600,000 severance package and the workers laid off N800,000 several package. “We were deprived of our rights while working for the company in such a way that the company will offer us a job without appointment letters. Even when they employ most of their workers for the space of five years, they will not convert them to staff. “We are treated like slaves in the company and whenever we try to defend our rights, they will start dismissing us from work. They will say that if we are not ready to work in accordance with their policies, we should leave,” he said. Kila lamented that casual workers with CCECC earned N550 per day while staff were paid N850 per day, adding that issues of safety had been jeopadised by the company as lots of industrial accidents had occurred during work-hour. Mark Okila, ost one arm while working for CCECC “We were giving appointment without any safety induction certification and safety gadgets. This has led many workers to have permanent disabilities and others even death in the process of working for the company and nothing serious has been done about it. “We are seeking the intervention of the governor for justice to be done in this matter of abuse of citizen’s right by CCECC,” he said. He vowed that the sacked workers would shut down the site of the rail project by tomorrow until their entitlements were fully paid by CCECC. The protesters stated that in the process of working for the company, Mr. Mark Okila was involved in an accident which led to his right arm being amputated while Mr. Aondowase Fidelis lost his eye and Mr Moses Ajar lost his left thumb while working for the company. According to Fidelis, who lost one of his eyes, he was working with a firing machine on 26 April, 2015 when the blade of the machine cut, with a piece of it entering one of his eyes. He was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, only to be told that he had lost one of his eyes and could not see with it till now, adding that the company promised to compensate him, but that nothing had been done about it till now. Addressing the protesters, the Chief of Staff to the Lagos Governor, Olukunle Ojo said the state government would call the protesters for a meeting next week, assuring that their entitlement would surely be paid. Education / Uniabuja Gets Accreditation For Medicine, Other Courses by CastroTbb(m): 10:53pm On Jul 22, 2015
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja (UniAbuja),
Prof. Michael Adikwu, said the institution had full
accreditation to offer courses in agriculture,
engineering and veterinary medicine.
Adikwu disclosed this at a forum of the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said that the initial accreditation challenge
experienced by the institution had been overcome.
“Let me start with agriculture. That was one of the
courses that were problematic; we have full
accreditation for that now; so we don’t have problem
in that area,” he said.
“Before I came on board, there was also a problem
with engineering; some of the students were farmed
out, sent to other universities.
“So, they (the university) had some contact with them
and there were few courses they needed to come
back and complete and that has been done, and we
have graduated two sets put together.
“So, we do not have problem with that currently,” he
said.
On veterinary medicine, Adikwu said that the issue
with the course had been sorted out and that the
department had started graduating students.
He said that the only department in the university yet
to be accredited was medicine, adding that it was
being expected. “They have had the first
accreditation; they were successful.
“For medicine, you have to do serial accreditations;
they needed to do one for the basic clinical sciences
and then the final accreditation.
“So, we are preparing for that and very soon, they too
will cross the fence,” he explained.
He said that the university had acquired the basic
infrastructure needed for teaching medical students,
adding that the institution presently had three sets of
students ready for graduation.
The vice chancellor disclosed that the university
recently lost its accreditation for law and
microbiology programmes because it overshot its
admission quota.
He explained that the loss of accreditation for the
courses could only stop the university from admitting
fresh students for them, adding, however, that the
matter would be resolved soon.
He said that the loss of accreditation for law was
because the number of students admitted for the
programme was high.
According to him, the Council for Legal Education
said we should admit 100 students but we were
admitting more than 400. “I know of some other
universities which are taking 700 students and they
also lost accreditation. Once that is corrected, we will
get our accreditation back,” Adikwu said.
“We also do not have accreditation for microbiology;
I do not think that it is punitive; I think that it is
corrective.
“Once the number of our students normalises, we
will get our accreditation back,” he stated.
The vice-chancellor, however, said that the corrective
measure would not affect the students currently in
the law and microbiology programmes, stating that
they would graduate soon.
According to him, our Faculty of Law is doing very
well as it has performed wonderfully in both local
and international completions.

Crime / White Garment Pastor Accused Of Raping Brothers Wife by CastroTbb(m): 2:33pm On Jul 22, 2015
The police from State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka in Anambra State, eastern Nigeria, have commenced investigation into an alleged rape of a housewife in a farmland in Umuchu town, Aguata Local Government by a white garment prophet who is the elder brother to the victim’s husband.

The investigation followed a petition written by a group known as Human Rights Awareness Initiative and Road Safety on behalf of the victim to the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command.

The victim, Mrs Chinasa Okoronkwo, alleged that Prophet Pius Okoronkwo raped her in a farmland where she went to farm after she escaped incessant sexual harassment by him.

The suspect, who is the founder of Covenant Sabbath Mission Yaweh church whose headquarters is located at Umuchu, denied the allegation and said it was a ploy to blackmail him after sponsoring the marriage between her his younger brother.

The woman admitted that he was one of those who sponsored the marriage and said he had another motive for sponsoring the traditional wedding.

She said her ordeal started after their traditional marriage when Okoronkwo approached her and told her that despite the fact that he married her to his brother, the job of impregnating her will be his responsibility.

She said despite the fact her husband is poor, she refused such demand because her husband was alive and fit to impregnate her.

Chinasa said the harassment continued until he allegedly raped her in the farmland while threatening to kill her if she refused.
She said she had to seek the help of the human rights NGO to seek for justice.

She narrated that after Okoronkwo allegedly raped her, he sued his influence to gang-up with some people and without her husband’s consent, and chased her away from her matrimonial home to cover his track.

The Human Rights Awareness Initiative and Road Safety, Comrade Gilbert Obinwa, who confirmed receiving a complaint on the issue after the woman came to their office and they had to write the petition to the Commissioner of Police.

He said what happened to the woman was height of injustice and asked the police to investigate the allegation and prosecute the offenders.
He noted that there was a grand conspiracy to ill treat the woman because her husband was a peasant farmer and could not do anything.

The Okoronkwo, who denied the allegation of rape and sexual assault, said it was the kinsmen that asked the woman to go to their home in Umumaoku town in Aguata to bring her relations because of her bad conduct so that the two families would resolve the matter peacefully.
At the SCID, the police confirmed the incident and said they have already commenced investigation into the matter.

A police source said after investigation and if a case of rape was established, the prophet would be prosecuted.

Politics / Anambra PDP In Fresh Crisis by CastroTbb(m): 2:20pm On Jul 22, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chapter in Anambra state is currently engulfed in another round of crisis. The party kicked off its congresses yesterday amidst protest and rumours that the exercise has been postponed. Nigerian Pilot reports that most of the party’s leaders and elders were absent at the exercise held at ward levels. The congress was monitored by a five-man PDP congress committee instituted by the national body of the party. The committee was led by Ike Abonyi. while members include Bolarinwa Oluwaseun, Mahmoud Bichi, Nuah Babatunde and Ugo Uyawunne, who served as secretary. The stakeholders who boycotted the congress include the three senators from the state, Senators Uche Ekwunife, Stella Oduah and Andy Uba. Others are Chief Chris Uba, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, Prince Arthur Ezeh, Sir Emeka Offor, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Senator Joy Emodi and Senator Ben Ndi-Obi. Comrade Tony Nwoye, PDP governorship aspirant in the state in the last election, told newsmen that 98 percent of PDP supporters in the state were not aware of the exercise. He said, “we challenge them to show us where they have published the names of those to conduct the congress as stipulated by the PDP guidelines. “Our members should be set for the next line of action within a few days, if this impunity by some members of the party is not reversed. Our Senators in the party were not aware of what is going on in the state, the acting national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus has been notified of the development.” Nwoye also lambasted the PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh, for signing an announcement for the congress, adding that it was specifically the duty of the organising secretary of the party to do so. “There is no congress going on anywhere in the state, Metuh has written names of his stooges because he wants to become national organising secretary of the party in November 2015.” “We do not want to give ultimatum to the NWC, but the stakeholders will be meeting six hourly waiting for the final decision of the party, before we take our final decision on our next move in the next few days,” Nwoye said. Meanwhile, the national leadership of the PDP has accused the federal government of treating its members as prisoners of war. www.naij.com/494649-anambra-pdp-in-crisis.html
Crime / Robbers Attend Church Services In Abuja, Rob The Church Of Offerings Collected. by CastroTbb(m): 2:16pm On Jul 19, 2015
The popular adage, many days for the thief, one
day for the owner of the house, came through
when two armed robbery suspects were arrested
by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of
the Federal Capital Territory Police Command in
Abuja.
The two suspects who belonged to a gang of
four robbers that specialized in joining genuine
worshippers to attending Sunday services and
then returning to steal the offering for the day
from the same churches, met their waterloo
after robbing the Kingdom Connection Church,
Jabi Daki-Biyu and St. Matthew Catholic Church
in Karmo Abuja.
In a brief chat
with Sunday
Sun, one of the
arrested sus
pects, Isaac
Nyam, 35, con
fessed that he
was among the
gang that
robbed the
church, and
explained the
modus
operandi of the
gang.
His words: “We specialized in robbing churches in
Abuja.
Usually one member of our gang would attend
service in the church before we go to rob the
place. When the service is on, we will watch
what they are doing, especially during the
offering time. We will watch where the ushers
take the offering box after the service and in
the night we go back for the operation.”
Armed with the intelligence gathered, the FCT
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu said
that gang struck on June 15, 2015, at the Kingdom
Connection Ministry around 3.00am, where they
overpowered the two security men. They also tied
up some members of the church living within the
premises of the church; the gang then gained
access into the auditorium and carted away the of
fering, musical instruments, laptops, GSM handsets
and also removed the brain box of church’s Toyota
Hummer bus.
Done with their unholy deed, the gang departed,
gladdened that it had executed a successful heist,
but providence turned the table on them as
information was relayed to the police command,
and SARS operatives were activated to go smoke
out the culprits.
Through diligent investigations, the police located
and stormed the hideout of the gang. Two
members of the gang were arrested while the other
two escaped with bullet wounds. The police recov
ered an English Berata pistol and three other
pistols from the gang.
Commenting on the robbery experience, a member
of Kingdom Connection Church, Mr. Philp Oseni
said: “We were shocked when they came; they tied
up the two security men on duty and some of our
members living within the church premises and
went straight to where we keep the offering box.”
The Commissioner of Police assured that the
suspects would be charged to court soon.

Celebrities / Popular Nollywood Actor Goes Blind by CastroTbb(m): 7:27pm On Jul 18, 2015
Popular Nollywood actor, Bruno Iwuoha has lost
his sight.
The veteran actor in an interview with a radio station
in Abuja opened up on his interview with a life
threatening disease.
The actor talked about his battle with diabetes and
how he has been battling glaucoma for years
without money for corrective surgery.
According to the talented actor, he never knew he
had diabetes until a violent armed robbery attack
that landed him in hospital.
He said “I’ve gone to so many places; within the
country, outside the country for treatment, until
finally…finally, the thing [diabetes] claimed one of
my sights. As I look at you now, I’m using only one
sight. They call that glaucoma. And gradually, it’s
affecting the other one. So, name make, apart from
places…the people who call me a times, both the
little cash they can give me…drugs and all that…but I
discovered that this thing [the illness] is a lifetime
something. And it has robbed me of the job [acting].
And now, if I get a script, it will be hard for me to
read it very well. And if I read it, if I strain my eyes
for so long, it would look as if someone would lead
me around the house or anywhere I want to go
because it will affect the only one [eye]. So that’s my
problem.”
The actor now needs to be transferred to a US-
based hospital where he is required to have
N3.5million, and all he has so far is N200, 000.
He also said that the AGN and AGN president
Ibinabo Fiberesima are yet to reach out to him.

Politics / Radio Biafra Main Engineer Apprehended By SSS by CastroTbb(m): 4:34am On Jul 18, 2015
The State Security Service (SSS) has apprehended
an engineer based in Enugu believed to be the
main engineer of separatist station, Radio
Biafra.
The engineer allegedly assisted the operators of the
radio station to place not so large equipment on
abandoned NITEL transmission polls and a few
transmitters owned by other mobile telecom
providers
The engineer has since been transported to Abuja to
face interrogation, Newsrescue.com reports.

The station has been operating online for some
years now but recently began broadcasting inciting
and insulting messages across Nigeria’s South east
and South South region.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Nigerian
Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Emeka Mba, has
promised Nigerians that the signals from the station
will be blocked soon.
Two days ago, the NBC claimed it had successfully
jammed signals from separatist radio station, Radio
Biafra. But the owners of the station and some
Nigerians who follow the activities of the station
denied the claims of the regulatory agency.
Radio Biafra operates from an unknown location
with the frequency 88.0 and it is quite popular
among some listeners.
The station which shows solidarity for the Biafra
struggle is mainly listened to by people in Rivers,
Imo, Anambra and Enugu state.
In a related development, Governor
Rochas Okorocha of Imo recently stated that the
radio station, “does not have the backing of the
South East, any leader of the South East, or any Igbo
man.''

Education / Why Do Female Pupils Prefer To Be Flogged On Their Palm? by CastroTbb(m): 7:44am On Jun 25, 2015
I don't know if this is the right section for this question. But I took up a teaching job recently and since I stated teaching, I've discovered that whenever corporate punishment is to be meted out to a female student, she prefers the flogging to be done on her palm instead of her backside. Not only in my school anyways but female students generally do it. The question now is why do they prefer to be flogged on her palm instead of her backside?
Education / BSU ASUU Meeting Ends With More Demands by CastroTbb(m): 11:16pm On Jun 24, 2015
Contrary to the expectations of students of
Benue State University, BSU Makurdi, the
meeting of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU which held today, had
nothing to do with ending the current strike.
An inside source told BENUE.COM.NG that the
much publicised meeting was to consider a
letter which the union plans to send to the state
governor, Dr Samuel Ortom concerning other
issues that needed to be addressed.
Our reporters gathered that apart from the
issues of unpaid salaries which is the major
reason for the strike, there are issues such as
earn allowances, deductions on health insurance
scheme, pensions amongst others, which needed
the attention of the Governor hence their letter.
One of the lecturers who pleaded anonymity,
during a phone conversation said the union
wanted the Governor to also look into those
issues as soon as possible in order to avoid
another strike in the future. She however said
these additional issues were not going to
prevent them from calling off the current strike
once their salaries were paid, but emphasised
that it would take more than one months salary
for the striking lecturers to return to the
classroom.
You will recall that BSU lecturers have been on
strike since the 9th of March 2015 owing to
unpaid salaries which have now amounted to
four months and still counting.

Career / Workers Shut Down Operations Of Ait/ray Power by CastroTbb(m): 7:22pm On Jun 24, 2015
Members of staff of DARR Communications, owners of AIT/Ray Power stations in Benin City, Edo sate, engaged the management of the media outfit in a showdown, shutting down the station’s broadcasting activities over alleged high handedness on the part of the management of the station and nonpayment of their salaries of between 11 and 17 months.

The aggrieved workers who took over the entrance to the premises of the broadcast outfit situated along the Benin/Lagos by pass, Ikhueniro village, said they were living in penury while some of the management staff live in opulence.

Armed with placards of various anti-management slogans, the AIT/Ray Power staff described as annoying that their employers would be contemplating laying off staff even when they were not paying regularly.

They further alleged that one of the managers of the station informed their superiors in Abuja that working with contract staff would be more convenient for them in the station than working permanent staff.

Efforts to reach the Benin station manager, Oyeghe Oyarekhua who is Head of AIT and Osadolor Igiozee, head of Ray Power and the outfit’s head of marketing, Baimoh Emozozo were not successful as they were not in the office when journalists visited the station, but asked that all enquiries to be directed to the Abuja headquarters of the organisation.

“Everything is about salaries and these are issues handled by the Headquarters, so will advise that enquiries be directed to Abuja. But I can assure you that management at that level is working to ensure all is well,” a staff who did not want to be named volunteered to journalists.
The stations are currently off air and their followers awaits what happens thereafter.
