Politics / Senate Ethics Committee Speaks On Amaechi's Screening by CastroTbb(m): 3:58am On Oct 22, 2015 |
Our Interest As A Committee Is Nigeria – Ogba Following the postponement of the screening of Rotimi Amaechi, ex-governor of Rivers state, a member of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions Obinna Ogba has addressed the issue. Amaechi should appear before the Senate on October 22, Thursday. Ogba denied the speculation that the committee is against the confirmation. He equally debunked implication that the shift in unveiling the report of probe on the former governor, which resulted in the delay in his screening was as a result of distinct division among members of the committee on the report. Senator Ogba, who represents Ebony Central in the National Assembly, under the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party insisted that there was no disagreement among members of the committee. He said: “ Why do you people have so much interest in Amaechi’s issue? The point is that we don’t have any misunderstanding among ourselves and there is no reason for that. “We are intact, we are united, our interest as a committee is Nigeria, we stand for anything that will move this country forward. We are not interested in whether somebody is in party A or party B or from so and so state.” Amaechi’s screening has been shifted three times. The second time was reportedly because the committee was unable to submit a completed report on the outstanding petitions against the appointee. There are also additional accusations that there is a court order against Amaechi from Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, from current Governor Nyesome Wike. However, Nigerian Constitution says that President Muhammadu Buhari can make Amaechi a minister without Senate confirmation. source https://www.naij.com/613326-ethics-committee-speaks-amaechis-confirmation.html |
Politics / Radio Biafra Director Denied Access To Lawyer, Physician. by CastroTbb(m): 3:47am On Oct 22, 2015 |
There are reports that the embattled Radio Biafra director and leader of a secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been denied access to his lawyer and physician. According to Vanguard report, the Department of State Service (DSS) on Tuesday, October 20, refused the leader of the separatist group’s lawyer access to his client despite subsisting court order allowing him access to his lawyer and physician. However, the Magistrate’s CourtWuse 11 sitting in Abuja has refused to release Nnamdi Kanu as he is yet to meet the bail conditions. The lawyer was said to have disclosed on Wednesday, October 21, that Kanu had not been released yet owing to meeting up those conditions. Kanu’s lawyer, Egechukwu Obetta, said that the filing of paper work in line with his bail condition was in progress. A statement published on the website of Radio Biafra on Saturday, October 17, had disclosed the arrest of Kanu by the DSS as soon as he got to Nigeria from the United Kingdom. Following the said arrest, the separatist group worldwide had to write an open letter to world leaders over the plight of its leader. The Biafra group said in the letter: “The world leaders must stand up to its integrity, pride, and in defense of the law they made.” It also led to a faction of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) demanding that the federal government should immediately releases Kanu. But the issue continued to apparently amass more controversies among Nigerians as the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, on Monday, October 19, disowned the director noting that Kanu was a rebel who had incited violence among MASSOB members which led to his dismissal. Meanwhile, the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, had issued a stern warning to protesters who disrupted social and economic activities in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, October 20. source https://www.naij.com/613372-radio-biafra-director-kanu-refused-bail-denied-access-lawyer.html |

Properties / Nema Issues Flood Alert As Cameroon Releases Water From Lagdo Dam by CastroTbb(m): 3:37pm On Aug 07, 2015 |
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted the state governments and communities along River Benue of possible flood following information from Cameroonian authorities to release excess water from Lagdo dam. Director General Muhammad Sani Sidi said that the Cameroonian authorities in Garuoa have indicated that between now and November 2015 there would be routine release of water from the Lagdo dam due to excessive amount of water presently contained in the dam. Sani Sidi said the authorities have also warned “ all those living around the dam and along River Benue in Garoua up to Nigeria side should be alert and be ready for evacuation in case of possible flooding” He called on the frontline state governors, State Emergency Management Agencies, first respondents and relevant authorities to alert the communities at risk, prepare safe locations for possible evacuation and adequate preparedness. The DG NEMA said the agency has dispatched the alert to the effected state governors and is following up with appropriate advocacy. It would be recalled that the release of excess water from the dam in 2012 contributed to massive flooding of communities along the river. Consequently, in 2013, the two countries reached an agreement that Cameroon was to give early warning to enable Nigeria put in place proactive measure to prevent destruction of lives and properties. Education / Breaking!!!!! Benue State University ASUU Ends Strike! by CastroTbb(m): 3:17pm On Jul 28, 2015 |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU in
Benue State University, Makurdi have called off
their strike action. The union have been on strike
since March 9th 2015 when then Governor, Gabriel
Suswam failed to pay their February salaries.
Breaking the news after their congress meeting
today, the Chairman of the union, Dr David Ikoni
told BENUE.COM.NG that the lecturers were
satisfied with the commitment of the government
as conveyed in an agreement.
“We have agreed on certain terms with the
Governor so we have given him the benefit of
doubt”
“Our suspension of this strike was on personal
recognition of the Governor and his appeal and he
has given us a commitment and we feel that we’ll
give him a benefit of doubt.” He said.
He added that this was just a suspension and the
lectures will not hesitate to down tools if the
Governor failed to keep his promise.
“So when the time comes and he reneged on the
promise, we’ll know what to do.” He concluded.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Mrs Charity
Angya, last week hinted an end to the strike, saying
the Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom was doing
everything to ensure that the institution reopened
for students to continue their academic pursuits.
“The Governor sent people here. We were here
yesterday till about 4pm. We rose from here to
government house. We were there till night before I
left, I didn’t eat anything.”
“We were there all this time because Governor was
trying to see how he can pacify ASUU. He has gone
ahead to enter into an agreement with ASUU; an
agreement that is so unrealistic but what do you
do?”
“The good news on this side, is that, what Governor
talked with ASUU yesterday and their meeting on
Monday, I believe that that will end this strike.
Because he made whatever commitment they
wanted.”
“Truth is that the government is trying everything.
They have come to an agreement and the union too
said they will give them time, set out timelines as to
when they will honour whatever they have agreed
and they are going back on Monday to talk so that
the school will be reopened. For me, I believe it, I’ve
been praying, I’ve been fasting.” she said.
It is believed that by reopening before the end of
this month, the university may have averted
cancellation of the academic session. benue.com.ng/breaking-bsu-ASUU-suspends-5-month-old-strike-action/

Politics / British Lord Resigns After' Taking Drugs With Prostitutes.' by CastroTbb(m): 9:47am On Jul 28, 2015 |
London (AFP) – A British politician resigned from the House of Lords Tuesday after a newspaper published footage of him allegedly snorting cocaine with prostitutes. Lord John Sewel, 69, apologised for the “pain and embarrassment” he had caused after the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun newspaper published pictures of him apparently wearing an orange bra as he chatted to two sex workers. Scotland Yard has launched an investigation into his actions and raided his home at an exclusive block of flats near the Houses of Parliament on Monday night. “I have today written to the clerk of the parliaments terminating my membership of the House of Lords,” Sewel said in a statement. “I want to apologise for the pain and embarrassment I have caused.” On Monday, Prime Minister David Cameron questioned whether it would be “appropriate” for Sewel to continue approving laws amid the “very serious allegations” against him. Sewel previously represented the main opposition centre-left Labour party in the House of Lords, the Houses of Parliament’s unelected upper chamber. www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/07/28/british-lord-resigns-after-taking-drugs-with-prostitutes/

Education / Medical Students Besiege Vc's Office With Coffin OF Dead Colleague by CastroTbb(m): 4:50pm On Jul 25, 2015 |
Medical Students in Benue State University, Makurdi have deposited the coffin of their dead colleague at the office of the vice chancellor in protest. BENUE.COM.NG understands that their colleague, Idoko Nicholas Ejugwu died in an accident under controversial circumstances after receiving the news of his withdrawal from medical school after spending 10 years. Idoko was withdrawn for failing a haphazardly organised resit exam that has bedevilled medical students in the institution over the years. Speaking under anonymity in a telephone conversation, one of the students said they believe that Idoko took his own life because he couldn’t bear the news that his 10 years in medical was in vain. “He had been talking about it, that he wish he died a painless death. The school have finished him. There is no where in the world that a medical student is withdrawn after spending 10 years.” He said. Our source said the students had complained about the manner in which exams were conducted, where resit exams were prolonged for up to one whole year as against the stipulated six weeks, with no efforts to engage the students. After spending 12 years without graduation, that many of the students in the medical school have become disillusioned, frustrated, depressed and some have attempted suicide due to the stagnation and irregularities but the school management was continuously adamant about the psychological effects of their long stay in medical school. The students, after an altercation at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, obtained the coffin of their dead colleague, marched to the VC’s office, vowing not to leave until their grievances which bother around the haphazard conduct of exams, manipulation of results, withdrawals and accreditation, are resolved. All efforts to reach the vice chancellor for comments have been abortive. benue.com.ng/bsu-medical-students-besiege-vcs-office-with-coffin-of-dead-colleague/

Politics / Why I Still Can't Pay Salary- Aregbesola by CastroTbb(m): 3:41pm On Jul 25, 2015 |
Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has once again blamed the failure of his administration to pay workers salaries as at when on the drop in allocations to the state from the Federation Account. Aregbesola said this Friday night during a chat with newsmen on the sidelines of an award to him for service to humanity by Voice of African Women for Human Dignity, an NGO. The award was presented to Aregbesola at Asokoro, Abuja. The governor said that he was pained by his government’s inability to pay salaries regularly. “I have found it hard to pay the wage bills owing to the declining federal allocation to the state. “Federal allocation to the state has reduced by 40 per cent since 2013, thereby making it difficult for my government to meet its responsibilities,” he said. Aregbesola said the situation became so bad at a point that he resorted to the state’s reserves, which he said also ran out on the payment of salaries. He said administration had already to accumulate debt of N12 billion in its bid to ensure that salaries were paid regularly, adding that his government was committed to the people’s welfare. Aregbesola commended the group for the award and promised that he would inspire him to do more for the public. “I got into politics so that I can render quality services to the suffering people of my state because majority of the people are hungry and angry,” he said. At the presentation of the award by Hajia Amina Idris, the president of group, said the award was to appreciate the governor for his service to humanity. “This award of excellence is in recognition of your immense contribution to humanity,” she said. Idris said Aregbesola had been exceptionally helpful in the area of improving child education and promotion of human dignity through lofty programmes www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/07/25/why-i-still-cannot-pay-workers-salaries-aregbesola/ |
