Religion / On The Allegation That Judas Iscariot Committed Suicide: The Legal Perspective. by CastroTbb(m): 12:11pm On Feb 28, 2016 |
On the legal issue namely, that Judas Iscariot committed suicide on himself, it is submitted with respect that other than mere expression of the opinion on the part of some theologians with respect to the conflicting accounts of judas death found in the bible, there appears to be nothing whatsoever upon which this allegation rests. According to the gospel of Matthew, 'Judas threw the money into the temple and left. THEN HE WENT AWAY AND HUNGED HIMSELF. The chief priests picked up the coins and said "it is against the law to put this in the treasury, since it is blood money." So they decided to use the money to buy the potters field as a burial ground for foreigners' (Matt 27:5-7) Conversely, Luke states on the Acts of the Apostles that 'with the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; THERE HE FELL HEADLONG, HIS BODY BURST OPEN AND ALL HIS INTESTINES SPILLED OUT. Everyone in Jerusalem heard this. So they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, field of blood.' (Acts 1:18 and19) The question that begs for answers in this instance is that which of these two biblical accounts represents the true facts of Judas' death? In other words, *Did Judas hang himself or he fell headlong and died? *Did Judas throw thirty pieces of silver into the temple or use it to buy a field? *Why was the purported place of death designated fild of blood? Was it because it was purchased with 'blood money' or because this was were Judas fell and his bowel gushed out? In an attempt to reconcile these apparently irreconcilable conflicts, some scholars urged that there was never a contradiction surrounding Judas' death. Rather, they are two different view points of the same event and thus if the two accounts are read together, it would make more sense. It is thus their reasoning that the combined effect of the scriptural provisions is that Judas hung himself and the corpse later fell and burst open due to the activities of bacteria inside his body. Others opined that after Judas hanged himself, the rope broke and he fell unto rocks that disemboweled him postmortem. With repect to the 30 pieces of silver, Matthew reprted that priests of the temple bought a field with Judas' money, and so some suggests that by extension, Judas acquired a field. That is, Judas bought the field indirectly. Nothing however was said with regard tothe designation of the accused purported place of death as 'field of blood.' With profound humility and respect, all the foregoing submissions represent without more, the opinion of their owners and they are accordingly entitled to them. However whichever account one chooses to argue for, the law is trite that he who alleges the existence or non existence of certain facts must adduce concrete evidence in proof of same. And the standard of roof required by the law in such instances (especially criminal matters) is proof beyond reasonable doubts. Explaining the attitude of the law in this regard, Uthman Mohammed JSC in State V. Musa (1997) 5SCNJ.126 observed that ' a cardinal principle of law is that the commission of a crime by a party must be PROOF BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBTS. The burden of prooving that any person is guilty of a crime rests on the prosecution. This is the law laid down in Section 137 of the Evidence Act. The burden never shifts and if on the whole of the evidenc the court is still left in a state of doubt, the prosecution would have failed to discharge the onus of proof which the law lays down upon it and the PRISONER IS ENTITLED TO ANQUITAL.' With respect to the conflicting circumstantial evidence, the supreme court in the recent case of Ogidi V. State (2005) 1SCNJ. 67 explained the law thus 'WHEN CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE IS CAPABLE OF TWO POSSIBLE INTERPRETATIONS, ONE AGAINST AND THE OTHER IN FAVOR OF THE ACCUSED, THEN IN THAT CIRCUMSTANCE, THERE HAS BEEN NO PROOF BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT.' In this instant case, the circumstantial evidence respecting Judas' death is capable of two possible interpretations; one against the accused (See Matt 27:5) and the other in his favor (see Acts 1:18). Thus whether Judas' actually caused his own death by committing suicide as reported by Matthew or died from a fall as maintained by Luke in Acts of thwe Apostles, is yet to be satisfactorily proved beyond reasonable doubt. On this ground, it is submitted that if suicide were to be a crime at law, judgement is likely to be entered in favor of Judas. |

Politics / BIAFRA: Igbo’s Decisive Day As S.east Govs,leaders,others Meet by CastroTbb(m): 9:17am On Nov 22, 2015 |
TODAY is a decisive day for Igbo leaders and South-East governors, who will gather in Enugu to deliberate on the ongoing protests and agitation for the actualisation of Republic of Biafra. For about three weeks, members and supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and a faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) have been protesting in several cities of the South-East and South-South geo-political zones rooting for Biafra Republic and condemning the continued detention of Mr Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra, by the Federal Government. Some of the cities that the agitators have taken their protests to include Enugu, Onitsha, Awka, Asaba, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia and Aba. The protests have been largely peaceful except in PortHarcourt where a soldier reportedly shot one person dead. Disturbed by the intensity of the protests and effects on economic activities, governors of South- East states met on November 17 in Enugu and fixed Sunday (today), November 22, for an emergency meeting. After the November 17 meeting, Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, said the forum needed to ensure lasting peace in the zone and so have decided to consult widely with Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, the apex Igbo socio- cultural organisation, traditional rulers, development unions, the clergy and other stakeholders. “In furtherance to this, the South-east governors scheduled an emergency meeting of stakeholders on Sunday Nov. 22, 2015 at Enugu. Attendance at the emergency meeting will include all National Assembly members, ministers from the zone and other invited stakeholders from the zone”,Okorocha said. Advising IPOB and MASSOB to embrace peace, which he said is the only way to the development of the zone, Okorocha said the forum agreed to appoint a high level Economic Advisory Committee to harness the economic potential of the people of the area. It is on this score that all roads will lead to Enugu today for invited Igbo leaders and stakeholders for the decisive meeting. Ohanaeze raises team, roots for restructuring A member of the Imeobi (inner caucus) of Ohanaeze, Chief Guy Ikokwu, told Sunday Vanguard that the apex Igbo group had raised a team in readiness for the meeting and was just waiting for the governors’ invitation letter. His words: ‘’Ohanaeze is waiting for the IV (invitation letter). We have selected a team, which is ready to be in Enugu, if invited. We were not part of the last meeting. But the message is clear. They should ask the president to start restructuring the country now. Those protesting are frustrated youths. Some of them are graduates who are better than peers from other parts of the country. The governors should demand restructuring, devolution of powers from the centre and implementation of the 2014 National Conference report. There is no federation in the world where the Centre is controlling local councils. It is only in Nigeria. The country is made up of six geo-political zones. Four out of the six – South-East, South- South, South-West and Middle Belt (North- Central) want the country restructured. So it is the best thing to do in the interest of the country.” *42 Igbo groups to march for true federalism Ahead of the meeting, about 42 Igbo organisations have put the machinery in motion to push for the restructuring of the country through protest marches in 13 South-East cities. The planned five million man march will hold in the five South East states in December, Evangelist Elliot Uko, founder of the Igbo Youths Movement, IYM, told Sunday Vanguard. Disclosing this after a marathon meeting with Igbo Traders Organizations at the IYM Secretariat in Enugu, weekend, Uko said the 13 marches for restructuring Nigeria will hold in Afikpo, Abakaliki, Nsukka, Enugu, Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia, Okigwe, Owerri, Orlu, Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka. According to him, South-South groups who attended the meeting in Enugu included the Union of Niger Delta and South-South Youth Congress. Uko said these peaceful marches will be led by the clergy and students groups in each of the cities and towns in the South East. Asked to comment on today’s meeting of South-East governors and Igbo leaders, Uko said: “The current developments are beyond political interest and considerations of any individual or office holder, maintaining that only the truth can save the situation and the truth is that Nigeria must be urgently restructured in order to give all sections a sense of belonging thereby enthroning true federalism without delay, any other solution will not work. source www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/biafra-igbos-decisive-day-as-s-east-govsleadersothers-meet/ 1 Like |

Politics / New Ooni Of Ife Lands In EFCC Mess by CastroTbb(m): 1:10pm On Nov 04, 2015 |
The New Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi is set
to face the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, on allegations of forgery.
A human rights group known as the Centre for
Human Rights and Social Justice are behind the
allegations as revealed through a petition
forwarded to the anti-graft agency.
The human right group also sent a letter to
President Muhammadu Buhari with its
Chairman, Adeniyi Sulaiman, demanding what
he described as weighty allegations be
thoroughly investigated.
He maintained that the allegations of forgery,
fraudulent conversion and obtaining of N400
million against Ogunwusi and his company
should not be thrown into the trash can.
In the light of the demise of foremost Yoruba
ruler, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Osun State
Governor, Rauf Aregbesola recently approved
the appointment of a billionaire contractor,
Ogunwusi of Girsi Ruling House as the 51st
Ooni of Ife.
Ogunwusi pipped 20 other contenders,
including his 48-year old brother to become the
Ooni of Ife.
Prior to his appointment, he has been involved
in engineering, procurement and construction,
EPC, contracts locally and abroad for over a
decade.
Meanwhile, the group threatened to get a
court injunction to compel the EFCC to
prosecute Ogunwusi if the commission failed to
begin the prosecution after seven days of
receipt of the letter.
The letter read, “We wish to refer the
Honourable Chairman to the contents of a
weighty petition involving various acts of
criminality namely forgery, fraudulent
conversion and obtaining the sum of N400m
by false presence levied against the above
named person.
“We also refer the chairman to the EFCC’s
letter dated 17th September 2015 to
Principal Partner, Olawoyin (Legal
Practitioners) and a letter dated 23rd
September 2015 from Olawoyin & Olawoyin
(Legal Practitioners) to EFCC on the same
subject matter.
“In view of the foregoing, we hereby
request your commission to prosecute
immediately upon the receipt of this letter.”
He said the selective prosecution of alleged
offenders would not move the nation forward,
saying those with means would always believe
they could get away with any crimes. source: www.post-nigeria.com/new-ooni-of-ife-lands-in-efcc-mess/ |
Religion / Nigerian Gay Pastor Celebrates Birthday Today by CastroTbb(m): 12:57pm On Nov 04, 2015 |
Rev Rowland Jide Macaulay, the gay minister who founded House of Rainbow, Nigeria’s only gay church, which was forced to close in 2008, has expressed his gratitude to God in celebration of his 50th birthday. “It is unbelievable that this moment has come. I AM 50 YEAR OLD. I am delighted and grateful to the almighty God, who is incomparable, the omnipotent and magnificent God. If I have a thousand tongues it is not enough to express my gratitude. I just want to say THANK YOU GOD. I also want to say thanks to my parents, who laboured in my upbringing, though my mother is late. I believe she is looking down from heaven with joy and blessings for my future. I am grateful for my dad too, who through all hardship has the forbearance of hope and wisdom of a father. I want to say thanks to the thousands of people who have befriended me in joyful and difficult circumstances, too numerous to mention here, but I am joyful because of the unavoidable contributions in my life. Half a century is a gift, everyday will always be a precious bonus. I say THANK YOU JESUS, MY SAVIOUR AND MY LORD,” he posted on his facebook account. Macaulay first set up House of Rainbow in 2006, when he openly held Sunday services in a Lagos hotel hall decked out with rainbow flags. A public backlash culminated in members being beaten as they left church. Macaulay fled to the UK after death threats. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/nigerias-gay-pastor-jide-celebrates-50th-birthday/ |
