NOTE: Combined with a clever Operating System (OS), copious amounts of RAM aren’t necessary. Smartphone applications generally use a small amount of RAM (around 50MB), and so lots of these applications can run simultaneously. With a 1GB RAM device, up to 20 apps could be running simultaneously (hypothetically speaking); a 1GB RAM will be quite adequate to hold apps and other system processes that are always running in the background (examples of system processes that are perpetually active are: Messaging, dialer, homescreen etc.). The Operating System (OS) might decide while multi-tasking, to suspend the applications that are not being used at the time, saving RAM and freeing up space for use by other apps. I personally don’t recommend any device with a RAM size of 512MB. This is too poor; less than 10 processes can run concurrently (including the constantly running apps like dialer and messaging). However, if it is the first Smartphone you want to have and you are short on cash, go ahead and buy a 512MB RAM Smartphone, as a temporary device pending when you can upgrade to a higher device. A 1GB RAM device is an average standard for Random Access Memory in any Smartphone. It should take care of all your processes effectively. But for tech savvy, heavy users or Game lovers, I would recommend any device with a RAM of 2GB and above. INTERNAL (IN-BUILT) MEMORY | READ-ONLY MEMORY (ROM): Read-Only Memory (ROM) is critical to a Smartphone’s operation. The ROM stores the Operating System and critical files of your device. ROM stores your system apps and pre- installed apps. I recommend an Internal Memory of 4GB and above. Even if you can always supplement the ROM by buying an External Memory Card of Up to 32GB or 64GB (depending on the device threshold), it is very important that you have enough internal memory because, all the apps you will download and install will save part of their registry in the Internal memory (ROM). Consequently, even though you have the biggest external memory card in the world, it means nothing because your device will eventually refuse to install downloaded apps because of insufficient Internal memory to store the app’s operating system files and registry. An 8GB or 16GB External Memory Card will be adequate enough to supplement your ROM in holding apps, music and video. However, if your Internal (built-in) memory (ROM) is 16GB or more, you can even do without buying an External Memory Card for a very long time. PROCESSOR CORE COUNT: MediaTek and Qualcomm are the two biggest processor manufacturers for Smartphones made for Africa. Ideally, increase in the number of cores mean a decrease in the time required to complete system tasks. For example, a device having a Quad core processor (4-core processor) distributes complex tasks effectively to the 4 cores and improves performance compared to a dual core (2-core processor) counterpart. In the same vein, a device with an octa-core processor (8-core processor) distributes tasks effectively amongst the 8 cores and performs better than a Quad-Core device. However, due to the inter-dependence of system parameters for overall performance, core count does not necessarily improve performance, unless other parameters like battery strength and shared resources are also beefed-up. In other words, don’t expect core count to improve system performance to direct proportions. Our Smartphones constantly collect data from user inputs and the environment. These tasks can be divided among cores; for increased performance. Myth Buster : Contrary to popular belief, more processor core count does not mean more power (battery) consumption. Full HD displays are the real threat to battery consumption. PROCESSOR SPEED | FREQUENCY: The higher the processor speed/frequency, the more irrelevant the number of cores would be. So, a Smartphone device with a processor speed greater than 1.0 GHz (e.g, 1.33GHz), is a powerful device and having an Octa-core may then be irrelevant albeit desirable. BATTERY: There is really not much difference between Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) batteries, since Li-Po batteries are just a type of Li-ion battery (with the same technology used for both). One advantage of Li-ion batteries is that, they have “Overcharge Protection”. Automatic overcharge protection mechanisms allow charging current to by-pass the battery and switch to A/C charge mode. Over-charging Li-ion batteries is not a problem and does not affect battery life span. The added advantage of Li-Po batteries is that they are safer, more efficient and can be shaped into various designs (e.g, a prism). To me, I don’t see any real difference between the Li-ion and Li-Po clones. No matter the type of battery installed, I would recommend batteries with higher values, say anything from 2000m-AH and above. You will not enjoy your device if the battery capacity is 1800mAH or less. Those who want ‘serious’ phones aim to buy the ones with 3500mAH, 4000mAH or 5000mAH battery capacities. I advise you to do too. CAMERA: In these days of the selfie craze, Camera quality is an increasingly important factor to consider when scouting for a Smartphone to buy. Good camera quality is no longer a concern of Photographers and Video producers alone but for every phone user. For non-Photo savvy guys, anything from 5 Megapixels on the rear camera should be enough for your social media profile pics snapshots. Note however, that, Tecno has one of the lowest camera qualities in the smartphone market. So, for Tecno phones, the above recommendation would be an 8MP rear camera. For Photo savvy users like me, I would advise you just get either an iPhone, Samsung or HTC; as their camera qualities are unparalleled. CONCLUSION: When it comes to the overall performance of your Smartphone, no single parameter or system property can be used to judge the device. This is because, the overall performance depends on and only on individual performances of each important system property. According to everything I’ve talked about in this post, the ideal Smartphone to go for should have a minimum of: 2GB RAM 8GB ROM (Internal memory) Android 4.4 Kitkat OS 1.3GHz processor frequency Quad-core processor 3500-mA H battery Capacity SOURCE: http://onlineshopping-productreviews..com |

PHONE PROPERTIES / ANALYSES :::: RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM): More RAM means more background programs can be sleeping in the Random Access Memory; for quicker resumption-time when you return back to your dormant apps. More RAM means the Android device is going to spend less of its time killing and reloading apps from the Internal Memory (ROM)/External SD- Card. The more RAM gives you better/faster task-switching capabilities. The more powerful your RAM, the less your Homescreen and Apps will have the tendency to be killed. You can smoothly run complex and demanding apps that require a lot of memory and avert Lag-time. |
