Everyone is invited of course ![]() WITCH “What did you just say Irikefe?” “Mr Zubi, everyone, I said there is a witch in this compound. My father knows.” Papa Efe stood and glared at his son. “Papa, am I lying? Why won’t you just let us involve everyone and find a way to solve this problem? There is no better time. She has traveled now. And her boyfriend Wasiu is not here to go and do amebo for her.” “Wait wait wait Efe, who are you talking about?” “Mama Akunna of course. She is a witch. Air force! Wing commander!” Papa Efe charged towards his son but the men closest to him held him back. “My father knows but will not do anything. I thought you people are gathered here to solve problems. I am saying we solve this now. It is not only when somebody’s wife is entering another person’s room that you will become men and gather.” “O boy, watch your tongue.” “Okay calm down Efe. You know that what you are saying carries a lot of weight. It is probably why your father is not talking.” “Is it proof you want to demand? We have it. We caught her red-handed.” Papa Efe hissed and turned and walked briskly into the compound. Irikefe looked around and saw curiosity, uncertainty and even fear in the eyes of his audience. “She flies at night. The night she put something in my father’s drink that I went to rescue him with Castro, she came for us much later and we arrested her.” “How?” “I can’t explain it all now. She cannot touch me or my father but I cannot say the same for all of you. I am not doing this for myself but for all of you.” “Young man. You know that in our culture calling somebody a witch is not something you play with. Your father’s reaction to this disclosure worries me.” “Does anyone here doubt me?” As they exchanged bewildered looks, he pressed on. “Now, has anyone here been experiencing being pressed at night? If not you, your wives or children?” No one spoke. They continued to wear the inane looks that irritated Irikefe the more. “Alright, when you go back inside, ask them. I have seen Mama Akunna in witchcraft. Even if you have not been pressed or you have not felt anything, doesn’t it worry you all how she died and later did not die again? How she vanished in this same compound with her son’s baby? How it is that once you are thinking something she already knows what you are thinking? We went to call the police the other time, but before the police were here; she was already outside waiting for them. You can think of so many things that are unusual if you have not outrightly felt her evil hands on you.” “Alright, we get your point Efe. You can excuse us now. Let the elders deliberate.” Irikefe shrugged and entered the compound. He passed the room he shared with his father and went to Ndifreke’s room. Mr Zubi faced the men. “Does anyone know anything about what that boy has just said?" “I don’t think he is lying,” Josiah said. “His father’s reaction tells you that he knows something.” “Has anyone had any experience of what he has said?” “Yes.” “Yes i have.” “Yes.” Mr Zubi’s mouth fell open. “He is saying the truth,” Josiah said. We have been quiet because no one wants trouble. Does that woman appear normal to you? Does she even behave normal? Her son is committed to the psychiatric hospital after going crazy over the death of his entire family, deaths we all know she had a hand in. Even if she has not pressed you, everything about her points to a bad person. She is bad news through and through.” “Stop pretending Mr Zubi. They have been pressing you or somebody in your house,” Achike said. “I see your children comparing the scratches on their bodies with that of other children. Are you saying they have never mentioned it to you?” “My friend, take your time,” Mr Zubi said. “That young man is brave. You know that his father will probably throw him out of the house again. We should not allow what he has done to go in vain.” “Alright, so what do you people think? Kingsley let’s start with you.” He lifted his chin and stroked his beard and then said, “Some things sound better if they don’t come from you – Joyce Rachelle.” “I see. So you prefer others to talk?” “Mr Zubi you want to hear an opinion you are asking Kingsley. I am sure that when they are pressing him he is not quoting Dalai Lama. He will be shouting Chineke meeeh! Abasi mbok!” “Keeping quiet is better than running your mouth talking about things you don’t know about – King Tony S. Singh” Mr Kingsley said. “If we have to find a solution to this, we must work collectively. Kingsley, I think it is time you cooperated.” He stayed quiet again for a full minute then said, “There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls – George Carlin.” “Okpari!” “All right, Cosmas. Let's hear you.” “The young man who has come up with this allegation has acted irrationally. As council of elders, these are the kind of things we ought to be looking at as well. His father is deeply displeased. Our people say that what an old man sees sitting down a child does not see standing up. Papa Efe is the oldest man in this compound. If he has kept quiet, then maybe keeping quiet is the best thing to do. We have to call Efe to order and ensure he apologizes to his father and also ensure that his father does not send him out on the streets. As for his allegation, I don’t know who a witch is. All I know is that if you stand aright, nothing shall by any means harm you. Maybe this is the time we have to ask ourselves the question – man, how do you stand? The way we live in this compound will make it easy for a witch to thrive. If you are not sleeping with somebody’s wife, you are deflowering somebody’s daughter or gossiping about it or getting preoccupied with the lives of other people or exhibiting simple wickedness like using a public toilet and not flushing! All these evils drive light from your lives and allow darkness to enter. If you are being attacked by a witch, it is not the fault of the witch. It is your fault. I don’t know what it is you people want to do. But I will say that you thread with caution so you do not dig a pit for yourselves. I will go now and talk to papa Efe. That is all from me.” Mr Cosmas then left and entered the compound. “Kingsley, have you heard? Every day you will sh*t and you will not flush. It is because of you that witchcraft came into this compound. I did not say it. Your friend Cosmas said it.” Mr Kingsley looked up and continued to stroke his beard. “Well, Cosmas is right. Let him at least go and talk to Papa Efe on our behalf. The boy may have acted irrationally but his intention was good.” “That does not solve the problem Zubi. You know we cannot listen to Cosmas. Everyone knows he is not normal. Don’t forget that he is a friend to the woman in question. If he is not a witch like her, he belongs somewhere that ensures that they have mutual respect for each other.” “See gentlemen, this is Lagos. We are from different parts of the country where this type of thing is treated differently. I’m not sure I want to put my hands in anything I do not understand. I have known for some time now. I kept quiet. I have not died. My only disappointment is that she did not die when we thought she did.” “What I will suggest is that everybody goes back to his family and sit down and plan how to deal with this thing. We have to protect our own selves.” “I suggest that we call a pastor to come and sanctify the building before she comes back. Let us hold a powerful vigil in this compound. I swear once she steps foot in this place it will be as hot as hell.” “Which pastor? I don't believe in them after everything Daddy Freeze has said. Me I know what I will do.” “But what is Esther doing in this compound? Every morning she will be holding microphone and disturbing our sleep. Can’t she pray and cast away the witch?” “Ask Kingsley.” At that, Mr Kingsley stood. “Are you leaving?” “Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship is righteousness with unrighteousness? Second Corinthians.” “How will you not quote the bible for us? I am sure you will say that it is ministration that Esther ministers to you when you sneak into her room every night. When you go tonight, tell her what has happened. This is the time for her to prove her faith. It not about shouting repent repent repent!” “So what have we decided?” “I don't know. Every man for himself. I came to Lagos to find money. I did not come to fight with witch. But if any person finds my trouble I will know how to defend myself.” Having said that, Achike said his good night and left the gathering as well. Then one by one the men dispersed. Irikefe, Castro and Ndifreke met at the soakaway as soon as the men went inside. “Small boy, you no go go sleep? Irikefe said to Castro. “Your mama dey find you.” “Stop it Irikefe. At least I have a place to return to. You your papa don sharpen the cutlass wey him go use cut your head when you go back. Busybody.” “I am not a coward. Not anymore. The time wey I fear that woman don pass. Since I see am n*ked dey beg me, the fear don comot for my eye. I have said my own.” “Are you not worried about your father?” Ndifreke said. “I am. Mr Cosmas went to talk to him.” “Oh I see. “But I will still not go home tonight. Let me crash with you bros Freke.” Ndifreke shrugged. I’m sure Mkpoikanna will not have a problem with that. But only for tonight. Hopefully, your dad cools down by tomorrow.” “I trust Mr Cosmas. Even if you don’t believe what he is saying, you just find yourself agreeing with him. My dad will come round after listening to Mr Cosmas. I hope he does.” “But what came over you?” “I was just disgusted bros. Those old men formed a council to legislate about love affairs when there are weightier matters. Look at everything that they are concerned with! Talabi fvck Akunna wife. Ndifreke fvck Maya give am belle. Lukman wan fvck nurse. That is what all the problems are about. That is what they choose to deliberate upon. I gave them a proper problem to solve.” “You are intractable Irikefe. And you have exposed yourself to great risk. You can not be sure that Mama Akunna will not hear that you have accused her publicly. I don’t envy you when she gets back.” “So you think I will sit around and wait for her to come and winch me?” “You heard what Mr Cosmas said. Better to do nothing." “Bros na wa for you o! Na you Cosmas dey tell dat one na.” “I am worried,” Castro said. “Yes you should be, small boy.” “I think I will have to give my life to Christ for real.” “Good for you.” “I will go to Sister Esther truthfully now to lead me to Christ. I know that he that dwelleth in the shelter of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty where there is protection. I don’t want that witch to come and be fvcking me for night when I don sleep. That kind thing can render somebody impotent in future.” “So na because make you still dey pursue woman you wan give your life to Christ? Bloody hypocrite.” As they talked a Toyota Camry pulled up in front of the compound and they fell silent. They watched to see who the visitor was at that time of the night. The occupants of the car stayed inside while the car engine still idled. Then two minutes later Nurse Josephine alighted from the passenger side. Then a very tall muscular man emerged from the driver side and waited for her to turn round and meet him and together they walked hand in hand into the compound. She was dressed in a tight-fitting evening gown with stones all over which glittered as it came in contact with the soft glow of the evening moon. She chuckled to a joke the man said and they both disappeared into the corridor laughing. “Bros you see wetin I dey see?” Irikefe said to Ndifreke. “Yes. It’s Josephine with a guest.” “So nurse get mind carry man come this compound?” “She has the right to do that.” “So we go dey here somebody dey shine her congo in our very presence.” “Last I checked Irikefe, she is not your wife.” “But bros check am na, e no good. She would have taken him elsewhere. This is insulting to all of us." “Mr Cosmas said it is this type of thing that brings witches,” Castro said. “So if you know what is good for you, remove your mind from it so that you can stand well and witch will not come near you.” “Sharrap dia! Smallie. You guys can become Pope if you want. See this thing around my neck? No witch will come near me. And it was not gotten from the church. Me I don’t have that kind of faith so I will do what I can to help myself. I wish you all happy purifying of your mind. Please allow me to imagine what is going on in the nurse’s room right now.” “Irikefe!” “If I am that guy, I will not waste time. I will just bend her forward and tell her to place her hand on the table and push that big succulent yansh up. Doggie style all the way. Chai! When I go make money!” “Okay that’s enough. I’m going to bed. You can either come with me or go and sleep in the corridor and peep as you always do to your satisfaction.” “Bros I will come with you.” TO BE CONTINUED. |

Nuellaluv, IAmAmbrose, enabledgoddess ...as requested. THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS “Gentlemen, a while ago in this compound we sat quietly and watched a family descend into destruction. Mortal destruction I should emphasise. Talabi was busy confusing Awero and we all saw and kept quiet. It made for interesting moonlight gossip, and the result was five wasted lives. Well, that woke us up. We agreed that never again will we sit down and watch things get out of hand before we get up and act. A few days ago, something happened again which is clearly against the grain of good society. The result? Another death! It may have only been a foetus but it is still a life. We understand that it was not really an accident; that it was provoked. We want to know what happened. If someone has truly done wrong, we must address it, just as we were supposed to with Awero but failed to do. Oya Tobi, come and speak.” It was the first meeting of the council of elders of Number 225 Katakata street. Maya had been rushed to the hospital following the fall. She suffered a miscarriage with a lot of blood loss and needed a blood transfusion. Miraculously though, she did not break a bone; only a strain on one ankle and bruises on an arm and shoulder. It was following a conversation between Tobi and Castro that the latter went to his father to intimate him of the situation. “Maya’s fall wasn’t an accident Papa. Tobi told me that Lukman incited him to go and anger Maya.” “You don’t mean it!” “That is what it was.” “In that case, on Saturday when we gather, I will bring it up.” And so it was that after the Nigeria/Croatia match, Mr Zubi went from door to do to appeal to the men to come outside for the meeting despite the disappointing outcome of the game. It was inevitable however that it was the match they first spoke about before they addressed the important situation with Maya. “The most painful part is that the coach stopped speaking English. The man come dey rap him native tongue after the match! Which kind thing be dat?” “He is insinuating that the players did not understand him that was why they lost.” “How will they understand him when he was playing Mikel who had become a defender at Chelsea as a forward? Etebo who scored four goals in one match when he played for the flying Eagles he played where Mikel should be playing. And then Moses was falling like someone that was under the devil’s anointing. Confusion everywhere!” “And that our goalkeeper sef.” “He did no wrong. He had a fine game.” “I know but how is he nineteen years old? “That is besides the point my guy.” “The guy resemble hardened SARS official.” “Let’s be honest guys. We are not in the same class as the Croats. They barely got out of second gear against us because they did not need to. They are parading what is arguably the best midfield in the tournament and going forward they have very seasoned operators too. You will see them against Argentina or in the latter stages. Our boys should be proud. They gave everything.” “Which kind talk be dis na Oga Cosmas? Are they not professional footballers? How can they make basic errors as we saw and you are talking about giving everything? There are only four million people in Croatia. That is the size of Surulere. And we, a country of two hundred million cannot produce eleven players that can score a world cup goal?” “We will still score. Argentina and Iceland coming.” “Iceland has three hundred thousand people by the way.” “That is the size of Umunede!” “Messi could not score against them. Is it Ahmed Musa that will now do it? “Wahala dey o.” “The Nigerians are lucky. We are a forgiving people. After the five-nil Saudi Arabia suffered in the hands of Russia, their football Federation called it unacceptable. That there would be penalties for the players.” “What will they do to them?” “If I know those Muslim countries well, they will behead the goalkeeper and amputate two of the defenders. Then next time they will not disgrace their country like that again.” “Ewooo!” “All right gentlemen. That is enough for now. I truly did not expect any less. We are a failed country and those eleven players represented our reality. It would be unfair for us to go and win and then the euphoria distracts us from the truth. Tobi is here to tell us what he knows. It is getting late.” “It is Buhari’s fault. I have said my own.” “Tobi, speak.” “Good evening sirs” Tobi began. He was a gangling teanager with sharp eyes and a strong set face. Since he started fancying himself a musician, he had been hanging out with Wasiu more often and sometimes returned to the compound with reddened eyes. His lips were beginning to darken and his voice was becoming croaky. “Good evening Tobi.” “I went to Brother Lukman’s shop as I normally do because both of us we like music. So as we were talking about reigning songs I noticed that he was becoming quiet. So I asked him, bros why are you quiet? It is as if something is worrying you. He said yes that something is worrying him, that it is about my family. I ask him how is my family worrying him? He now said that somebody was doing something that is bad to us. I ask him what is it? He now said that Brother Ndifreke that gave my sister belle is doing something with the nurse in his room. He now said that it has been happening since the nurse came to this compound. So me I was angry so I went and told my sister. She was angry too and stood up to go and meet them and then she fell from the steps and rolled to the ground. I now saw the nurse and Brother Ndifreke there immediately. I now knew that Brother Lukman was lying and my sister just fall down for nothing.” “That is bad.” “And the poor girl had a high-risk pregnancy. What had Lukman got to say?” He is not here. He has been evasive since this thing happened.” “Okay as the council of elders what do we do now?” “We must call him to order.” “How?” “We must let him see the folly in his actions and punish him.” “Do we have the authority to do that?” “It's not a question of authority. Everyone agreed that we should meet like this and proffer solutions to problems. We will prescribe what is commensurate. If it is a crime, we hand the person over to the police.” “Okay, so what do we do in this case?” “Let him pay part of the medical bill. I hear it is eighty-five thousand. They did evacuation and also treated her wounds and gave her a pint of blood. Let him bring half the amount.” They all nodded in agreement. But even as they did so, they knew it was not going to be easy to get Lukman to part with over forty thousand naira. “Mama Tobi cannot afford the remaining amount.” “What of the man that impregnated her?” “I’m here,” Ndifreke said emerging from the darkness. He looked disheveled and had clearly not had any sleep for days. This was hard on him, but they could see a different kind of glint in his tired eyes. “I do appreciate your concern gentlemen but don’t worry. I will settle the bills.” They all looked at him with consternation. “I said I will settle the bill. Leave Lukman alone. And also don’t trouble Mama Tobi.” “Will you steal the money? We know you can barely have one good meal in a day.” “I said I will settle the bill. Thanks, everyone.” With that, he turned and went into the compound. Mkpoikanna was upon him in a flash. He found him in the room stripping to go and have his bath. “Ndi, what are you saying? They were going to find a way to help you.” “I don’t need their help.” “Of course you need their help! You have nothing!” “Sit down brother.” Mkpoikanna did as requested. Ndifreke sat across facing him and said, “You see, today I have seen that God works in mysterious ways. After I left the hospital and was told what the bill was, I was about to take a bus to Oworosoki from where I would just go and jump into the lagoon when my phone rang.” “And…” “They had sold the community land!” Mkpoikanna jumped and his head almost hit the roof. He knew what that meant. Communities in their clan as a custom annually shared parcels of land to boys that had attained the age of twenty-two or they sold a big portion of it and shared the money among these youths as either education grant or business capital. Ndifreke had forgotten that this was the year that he became eligible. “My share of the money is ₦250,000. I know it could have been more if I was around, but I will accept it without complaint. “This is good news my brother.” “Thank you.” “And then you want to use the money to go and pay that girl’s hospital bill?” Ndifreke looked at his cousin with bemusement. “But of course!” “Why?” “Are you really asking me that?” “Are you sure you were the one responsible for the pregnancy?” “How can you say that Mkpoinkanna? You know how many times she slept in this room.” “Well, my own is that you cannot trust girls of nowadays. We saw her entering Achike’s room, and we don’t even know who else.” Ndifreke shot to his feet and his eyes became flaming red. “Calm down my brother,” Mkpoikanna said as he also rose to face him. “My advice to you is that you take this woman thing easy. You are still a small boy. This money is the chance you have been waiting for. You cannot go and spend it on a woman when you are not even sure…” “I am sure!” Ndifreke thundered. “Bro, it is because of the respect I have for you that I have stopped myself from giving you a blow, ma’ Abasi!” “All right, all right. Do what you want to do” Mkpoikanna said. “Meanwhile how is Maya doing?” “She does not want to see me and forbade them to allow me near her.” “Hmmm.” “Maybe I have been bad to her, I don’t know.” Mkpoikanna opened his mouth to say something but thought the better of it. “Oya go baff” He said instead. “I fit get one three-three for your head this night?’ “I haven’t collected the money yet.” “Okay. Take am easy my brother.” With that, he left the room. Outside, the council of elders was still meeting. “Ndifreke may have refused our help but we will still summon Lukman next week Saturday and chastise him if nothing else. He nearly caused another big tragedy and we will not condone such behavior.” “Yes, agreed.” “Does anyone have anything to say? Anything troubling anyone before we adjourn.” “Yes, I have something to say,” Irikefe said, emerging from the shadows. “What is it Irikefe?” Irikefe looked around and his eyes met his father's. Papa Efe like everyone else was wondering what it was about. “There is a witch in this compound,” he said. TO BE CONTINUED |

My promised midweek update is here. Enjoy folks. LOST Maya curled up on the floor in the corner of the room that had been left for her as she needed to be in bed all day. Her mother would not show her sympathy and let her use the bed. For Mama Tobi, she did not send her any message. She had to live with the consequence of what she did to herself. “Is that the cake I sent you to go and learn to bake? Fine girl, sexy girl! In the end – pregnancy. Pregnancy Maya! Shebi you wanted preek? See where preek has landed you! Stay there you hear, stay there. I will not leave my bed for you. If you were impregnated by a man, he would have since come and done something to give you small dignity. But you see your life? I love you-I love you. All he did was to fvck you everyday and give you garri to drink. Your mates are fvcking better fvck. Chioma is driving a Porsche now and I am sure that her mother can also boast of a case full of wrappers. But you! You just wasted your beauty. Even if it is that mumu Tecno that said he has made hundreds of millions without going to school that you managed to catch, my life would have changed! I would have stopped roasting myself everyday in the fire to make fufu to feed you. You have the beauty. All you needed to do was to stroll into that place they do their videos and they would chase all those crooked girls away and put you. Maybe the Assurance Davido sang would have had your name! My cousin in Surulere was begging you to come and stay with him so that he could take you round but you refused. Genevieve used to live in this area. We all saw her grow up. She did not go to school but everyday her leg was in Surulere. Now we only see her in magazines drinking champaign in the Bahamas. But you! You stay here dey fvck cheap fvck!” It was one of those days, Maya thought, as she remained in her rest position. The pregnancy was brutal on her. She had been vomiting every day and kept a small container by her side always. The doctor had told her that if she continued vomiting at that rate that she would need IV to replenish lost fluids sooner rather than later. Hers was not just morning sickness, it was hyperemesis, and it could be her lot for the duration of the pregnancy. Surely God was punishing her for getting pregnant out of wedlock. She had heard of girls that got pregnant and no one knew; even they themselves sometimes did not know until they were due. They continued living their lives and doing all that they wanted to do. Why then was hers like thas? The worst part was that she barely saw Ndifreke anymore. Since her mother spoke to him, he only sent her N4000 and vanished! Maya was not buying the nonsense that it was because of her mother’s threats that he stayed away. People in love did not behave like that. They jumped fences, wore disguises, dodged bullets, even gave up their lives for love. Was that not the story of St Valentine whom the world celebrated till this day? How about Romeo and Juliet - people who allowed their hearts to guide them. But a few words from a poor angry mother and Ndifreke melted with the morning dew, leaving her in both physical and psychological pain, added to the verbal torture her mother subjected her to. What manner of love was that? She lifted her head and pulled her vomit container closer, opened it and spat inside for the umpteenth time. Meanwhile, Tobi was standing in the room watching her. She looked up and saw the disdain in his eyes. Her little brother would not get over the fact that she was not meant for him. Maya hissed, turned, and faced the wall. “Mother is right,” He said. “And that is not all. Your loverboy is sleeping with the new nurse.” Maya’s heart stopped. She found that she was struggling to breathe all of a sudden. Tobi noticed her distress and rushed to her side and helped her to sit up. She leaned back on the wall and stretched out her legs. “Get away from here,” she said. “You don’t believe?” “I say get out!” Maya screamed and began to cry. She believed it as soon as Tobi said it. She was just thinking about his evasiveness. Also, she interacted with the nurse and she saw her eyes. Though Josephine was generally nice to her, something always seemed off when Maya looked at her deeply. It did not help that she was always in a hurry to look away. She may not be very experienced in those matters, but she got a kick in her gut the first time she spoke with the nurse, something she chose to ignore at the time. She was yet to meet a woman that was nice to her since her pregnancy became obvious. The older ones said the same things her mother said but with less venom. The younger ones laughed at her and called her foolish. So when she first spoke with the nurse and found her fawning and showing understanding and willingness to help and then she followed her to the hospital and saw the way the same nurse spoke to the other patients, she thought something was not quite right. Josephine was not a nice person from what she saw of her at work, and therefore had no reason to be so nice to her unless she had an ulterior motive. Maya now concluded that Josephine had been mocking her. She used what she knew of her to get her man. “It is Lukman whom everyone knows worships Ndifreke that told me. He said his conscience would not let him be, knowing that you are a good girl who is now suffering because of him. They used to meet in her room but because it is on this floor, they have now moved to his room.” “Leave me alone Tobi.” “They are in his room now. They have been making love since she came back from work.” Maya’s face immediately turned to ash. She remembered the breathing exercises they were taught at antenatal and gathered all her strength to continue to draw air into her lungs. Feeling a bit calm, she tried to get up. Tobi rushed to her side and helped her to her feet. She was wearing a booboo gown her mother had thrown at her on her eighteenth birthday, the same day her mother told her she was pregnant. Her mum called it her birthday gift. Though given to her in scorn, it was comfortable and she was able to function in it. The floor spun as she took one step after the other towards the staircase with Tobi in tow. But there was no stopping her. Getting to the top of the stairs a wave of vertigo caused her to stagger as she extended a leg to start the climb down, then suddenly everything went black. The last thing she remembered was Tobi shouting “Maya, no!” “Maya lost the baby.” “I know.” “Disappointing.” “It is. I told you I was having a bad feeling. She had been so frail.” “Why was that? She looked a healthy young woman to me.” “She’s a healthy young woman. You can never tell with pregnancy. The next one might come and she will be able to run a marathon with it. Or it could be that she is one of the unfortunate ones who don’t take well to pregnancy.” “What do we do now?” “Nothing. The pregnancy is gone.” “So what happens to your sister’s soul?” “She will continue to roam till she finds an opportunity to incarnate. She will not be the only wondering soul with no body to occupy. Look up.” He looked up and saw hundreds of souls in translucent bodies around the compound and on the street, walking up and down, entering and exiting rooms, stalls and everywhere. “They are always around day and night just looking for how to return to the earth. They cannot be seen with the n*ked eyes. They are harmless. They cannot touch a person standing on solid ground. And yet many alive do not know how fortunate they are. Small thing they will go and jump into the lagoon. Yet these are souls looking for ways to incarnate but can’t. My sister is very disappointed.” “Why is it so difficult for them to return?” “Mainly because of the way they died. Many only realize when they are dead that life continues. And if they never believed in reincarnation, they just roam. Those who believed find a way to come back quickly because they can position themselves well. Those who burned their bridges through suicide or murder suffer even more. Best place to be is the earth I tell you. They realize too late.” “Will your sister have another chance?” “Yes she will. Only it may take time. Some of the souls you see there have been roaming for centuries.” “Will we roam like that when we die?” “I do not want to come back, so I am burning my bridges now. When I pass on, I know I’m going to the nether regions and won’t even put myself in contention to return. You decide what you want for yourself.” “Where you go I go.” “Easy to say now. There is plenty life ahead for you. And I still feel you may be delivered at any time.” “I won’t.” “We’ll see about that.” “So where is your sister now?” “She decided to leave this area for some time to recover from the disappointment.” “But can’t Maya get pregnant soon again?” “She can, but we don’t know how things will be with her and Ndifreke. And she may be careful next time. The pregnancy was too punishing.” “How about the nurse? Have you not noticed how she and Ndifreke look at each other?” “She will get him. But she is a nurse. They are too wise. They know what to take before they meet a man, when they are meeting a man and when they finish meeting a man. If a nurse gets pregnant, it is because she wants to. That is why in those days we did not allow our children to marry nurses.” “So they will soon become an item but she won’t get pregnant?” “She is working to land him in a way that he will not be able to get away from her. But I’m not sure she will be carrying his baby soon after.” “But Cosmas has been teaching him things. He should be able to avoid her and just impregnate Maya again for us.” “He is too weak to be able to follow the way Cosmas teaches. What do you think we have been doing to him all this while?” “He loves Maya. Love is supposed to conquer all, right?” “Poverty frustrates love. Never forget that. When you are poor, you cannot control anything. You cannot even control your erections.” “Hmm, okay how about we make him and the nurse not to take precaution like we did to Maya?” “There’s still a long way to go before we get to that point. Even if they start having sex, we will not be able to influence her so easily. It was easy with Maya because amonst other things Maya was naïve. Not this nurse.” “I see. Okay why don’t we just put your sister in Linda Ikeji’s womb?” “Are you mocking me now?” “Nope. You yourself said that it is easy now that they put their pregnancy pictures everywhere. I saw Linda’s pregnancy picture in the paper Wasiu was carrying. She took the pictures to prove that Kemi woman wrong.” “You are right. She was foolish to have done that. But she is way beyond our league. It will not benefit us. She is rich and well connected. If she suspects anything, she knows people that will just contact one baba in Ijebu Ode and they will rat us out easily. I am not ready to be paraded n*ked on the streets.” “Me too.” “Who will look at you? Anyway, it is easier to torment poor people. Even when they know, they just want to get money and go and rent a flat in Ikeja and forget everything about us. We will just turn our attention on another. But rich people, they don’t have tolerance at all.” “I see. I will remember that.” “Better do.” “So what is the way forward now?” “We turn our attention to Irikefe. Tomorrow we travel to the village.” TO BE CONTINUED |
