Politics / Buhari Should Resign, Allow Osinabajo To Becomes President — Opinion Nigeria by CEO1(m): 10:42am On Feb 21, 2017
An international human rights organisation, Opinion Nigeria, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tender his resignation to pave way for the confirmation of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) as President.

The Opinion Nigeria premised its demand on health reasons and Buhari’s trip to the United Kingdom.

Its President, Jeff Okoroafor, in a petition to Buhari entitled: “A call for President Muhammad’s Buhari’s resignation without further ado”, said the response by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, that Buhari was “on a short leave which is part of his annual vacation”, was the beginning of an unending tale.”

According to him, on February 7 2017, the Senate confirmed receipt of Buhari’s letter, informing the National Assembly about the resolve to extend his annual vacation in the United Kingdom.

He, however, said that going by the statement issued by Adesina, Buhari in the letter “was not categorical on the new date of his return.”
Okoroafor said this scenario had left the Vice President in an acting capacity “for too long”, especially at a time when the country was in dire need of affirmative actions to put things in the right perspective for the year.

He said, “Although there seem to be a general assumption that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is acting in the place of the president as such no vacuum is created in the system. But, we are quite aware that there are so many pending issues on the desk of Mr. President that awaits his return.

“We cannot be operating in secrecy at the presidential level expecting the information hungry Nigerians to keep mute. We have the right to know what is happening and we are committed to a functional and operational Nigeria which is not halted for any political gains or satisfaction.

“Based on this, we call for the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari quoting his health as the reason to fully function as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, followed swiftly with the immediate confirmation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as a substantive President of the country.

“We hope that this petition will reach deserving authorities in good faith, understanding that the urgency of this request is born out of the desire to salvage the country from total collapse. We pray and urge that this letter will be treated without prejudice or sentiment from whatever sphere of reasoning”, it emphasised.

“As the days on vacation recede, Nigerians yearn insistently to know the circumstances surrounding the president’s seemingly emergency exit from the country. It is ponderous to put on record that this so-called all important vacation was coming at a point when the country’s economy was demanding the innovation or yet still budgetary intervention to ameliorate the sufferings of many Nigerians.
”The social media in Nigeria within these seven- over-ten day vacation was awashed with stories competing for public attention about the reason behind the trip. The stories expanded with time with the climax asserting the death of President Buhari over failure to respond to treatments from the medical team in some named hospital in the UK.

“The presidency so far has come up with conflicting versions of comments to diffuse the tension but their words further rambled the suspicion of most Nigerians who requested that the president relay a video to Nigerians assuring them that he was hale and hearty but, he never succumbed.”

Politics / 2018 Census: FG To Use Biometric Method To Conduct Census by CEO1(m): 7:59am On Feb 21, 2017
According to reports, the Sokoto State federal commissioner, National Population Commission, Barrister Muhammadu Aminu Jason has divulged that the 2018 census will be biometric based to avoid human errors.

Aminu insisted that, as a prelude the commission will today commence the third phase of Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) in Illela local government area of Sokoto State.

According to Aminu, the significance of the EAD exercise goes beyond the conduct of the 2018 census hence it will be used as an established national data for generating accurate locality list including house numbering for subsequent census.

He noted that the commission had previously demarcated 37 local government areas in all the 36 states of the federation including Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in the previous EAD exercise. The federal commissioner insisted that Nigerians have no reason whatsoever not to believe the outcome of the 2018 census, as according to him, they are deploying sophisticated technology in carrying out the EAD excercise.

Politics / V.P Osibanjo Rejects N7b Mansion, Stays In His Current Accomodation by CEO1(m): 9:49pm On Feb 19, 2017
The spokesman to the vice president, Mr. Laolu Akande on Sunday cleared it on air that there is no budgetary allocation for the completion of the proposed new residence for the Vice President in either the 2016 or 2017 budget.
Akande, who made the clarification in a news release on Sunday in Abuja said that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had not failed to express his distaste for the new project.
According to him, Osinbajo has expressed his preference for the existing residence, called Aguda House, to the new complex.

“The incumbent vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, has said publicly that he considers Aguda House, which he currently occupies, a befitting official residence for the Vice President and sufficient for his needs,’’ Akande said.

Akande said that the new project which started in 2010, was initiated and funded by the immediate past administration.

The spokeman said “the project has never featured in the two budget proposals of the Buhari administration, neither in the 2016 nor the 2017 spending plan”.

“We like to clarify that the proposed plan of the immediate past administration to build a new official residence for the occupant of the Office of the Vice President, including the controversial gatehouse preceded this administration.

“Any suggestion, therefore, that this project benefits our administration or that it reflects our spending style or preferences is not only misleading but blatantly false,’’ he explained.

Akande noted that while the project was about 85 per cent complete, the Federal Government, in the circumstances, would decide at the appropriate time, the best use for the 14 buildings already on the project site.

Politics / My Detractors Sent Me To Jail — James Ibori by CEO1(m): 6:11pm On Feb 13, 2017
Former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, yesterday attributed his ordeal to the handiwork of his detractors, insisting that they sent him to jail for committing no offence.

He, however, said he has left them to God for judgment, promising that he would soon unfold his next plan of action.

Ibori spoke at a thanksgiving service organised by his kinsmen at the First Baptist Church, Oghara-Efe, in the state which was attended by prominent citizens of the state including his cousin, former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Others who witnessed the ceremony included former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Broderic Bozimo; Senator Ighoyota Amori, Managing Director of DESOPADEC, Mr. Makinde; House of Representatives member, Evelyn Oboro; Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Monday Igbuya; Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Mr. Ovuozourie Macaulay, Chief Solomon Fukekeme, Senator Patrick Osakwe and Mr. Festus Ovie Agas, among others.

Ibori said what was uppermost in his mind when the whole issue started was the pains, suffering his people and followers would go through but thanked God that he was back in their midst.

“I drew myself from God and somehow, I knew that God will stand by me. I knew that one day, this day will come. I am indeed very pleased that I can stand before you, look at your faces, the faces I have missed, the people I have missed,” he said amid ovation by his followers.

Ibori said further that “so when I reflect on it, it gives me joy that God has answered all your prayers. I will never forget all your support and solidarity for me all through this period.”

The former governor said he has handed his traducers to God for judgment, adding that he would not pursue any case again in London.

Ibori assured his followers that they would soon hear from him the next step he would take, noting that they should be patient with him.

He stated that if he were to give testimony of his journey it would take time that the only testimony he had was to say he was alive, well and back in their midst.

The traditional ruler of Oghara, Noble Eshemitan, Orefe III, described Ibori as a very humble man who has respect for elders and his seniors.

He recounted how he wanted to visit the former governor on his return from London after his ordeal and how he politely turned him down and instead, preferred to visit him in his palace.

“Upon his return, I put a call across to him that I wanted to visit him but he said no your majesty. It is I that will come to you. That’s the kind of person Ibori is,” he said.

The Vice President of Pentecostal Federation of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Awomakpa, who led other pastors to preside over the service, described Ibori as a worthy son of the state and Nigeria as a whole.

In his sermon titled: ‘Knowing the gift of God’ anchored on John 1 verse 6, bishop Awomakpa said Ibori was God’s gift, adding that “it has been a problem that the people have not recognise a gift of God in Ibori.”

The Emir stated this when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit in his palace in company with six other ministers.

The visit was on the side-lines of the Federal Government Town Hall meeting for the North Central zone held on Monday in Ilorin.

Phones / Samsung Explains Why Galaxy Note 7 Kept Catching Fire by CEO1(m): 5:41pm On Jan 23, 2017
After recalling 3.06 million Note 7 phones, Samsung Electronics said Monday that problems with the design and manufacturing of batteries in its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones caused them to overheat and burst into fire.

The South Korean company was forced to discontinue the smartphone, originally intended to compete with Apple's iPhone, after a chaotic recall that saw replacement devices also catching fire.

The debacle cost the company billions in lost profit and reputation.

Internal and independent investigations "concluded that batteries were found to be the cause of the Note 7 incidents", Samsung said in a statement on Monday.

"We sincerely apologise for the discomfort and concern we have caused to our customers," said Koh Dong-Jin, the head of its mobile business, bowing before hundreds of reporters and cameramen at a press conference.

"We wanted to increase the battery capacity as much as possible. Our battery suppliers, in order to meet our needs, applied new designs and manufacturing technologies. Conclusively speaking, the cause of the Galaxy Note 7 burning incident was in the batteries.”

In September 2016, Samsung announced a recall of the oversized Galaxy Note 7 after several devices exploded or caught fire, with the company blaming batteries from a supplier.

When replacement phones - with batteries from another firm - also started to combust, the company decided to kill off the Note 7 for good.

In total, 3.1m devices were recalled as authorities around the world banned the device from use on planes and even from being placed in checked luggage.

The cost of the recall is estimated at $5.3bn.

Politics / "Stay Away From Libya"— Abike Dabiri Warn Nigerians by CEO1(m): 3:51pm On Jan 23, 2017
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora, has warned Nigerian migrants against travelling to Libya, saying the penalty, when caught, is death. Dabiri-Erewa made the warning in a statement she issued on Monday, following the emergence of videos and photographs of Nigerians being killed in the North African country.

“The attention of the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has been drawn to a video and pictures being circulated on the purported killing of black immigrants in Libya,” she said.

“While the authenticity of the pictures and tapes in question cannot be verified, it is a known fact that Libya has been executing alleged black illegal immigrants for years. “As the Chairman Committee on Diaspora in the House of Representatives in the Seventh Assembly, we intervened in the case of 24 Nigerians about to be killed in Libya.”

She said the committee, in collaboration with Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), an NGO, petitioned the UN, AU, ECOWAS, and Ghadaffi yielded to pressure and released them.

“As at two months ago, NEMA, alongside the Nigerian Embassy in Libya, evacuated over 2000 Nigerians from Libya,” she said. “The Nigerian embassy in Libya, working with NEMA, has relentlessly intervened in cases involving Nigerians in trouble in Libya and will continue to do so.

“Libyans are dealing with their own struggles as there is no recognised government in place.

“The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora hereby appeals again to Nigerian migrants to avoid Libya as penalty for illegal migration to Libya, when caught, is usually a death sentence.

Properties / Lagos Landlady Fixed Nails In Front Of Her House To Hinder Unwelcome Guests by CEO1(m): 3:12pm On Jan 23, 2017

This photo above shows the rather weird approach a landlady in Lagos employed to keep unwelcome guests away.

According to an eyewitness who shared the photos, the Landlady of the house, fixed sharp iron nails on the stone slabs in front of her house at Irebawa street, Oke - Ira, Aguda, Ogba, Lagos to keep people away from her home and demarcate her territory.

The eyewitness revealed that the woman's action endangers children and other people in the area who pass there, especially at night. In fact, a little girl has already gotten injured recently after she stepped on the nails.

Residents are calling out to the appropriate authorities for action to be taken, if this is indeed illegal, to ensure that the nails are removed to prevent future mishaps.

Politics / Buruji Kashamu Rejects Fayose As New PDP Govs' Forum Chair by CEO1(m): 5:12pm On Jan 22, 2017
The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Prince Buruji Kashamu has faulted the choice of Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum.
In a statement he issued in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State on Sunday, Kashamu said, "It was a misnormer that the governors of an opposition party that is in need of rebranding and repositioning could chose a liability, a loud mouth and an immature politician like Fayose as the Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum.
"It is not that his emergence as the Chairman of the Forum means anything to me. But as a committed and loyal party man, it gives me great concern that instead of taking steps that will foster peace and unity, we are doing things that will widen the gap and cause more unity. Those who chose him should have a rethink in the interest of the party that is striving hard to return to power. His brother-governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, whose tenure he purportedly continued as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, is a cool-headed and balanced character. Even then, some of us pointed out that Governor Mimiko was slippery and sly, and a traitor who could not be relied upon. What happened at the end of the day? The party broke on his head when he overreached himself in the South West as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum at the behest of Governor Fayose. Instead of being a strong leader who would be fair to all, and do good to all manner of people, without fear or favour, he became more of a weather-beaten fowl, sullen and uninspiring. But, we thank God that we held our grounds and fought for our rights.
"Fayose had always wanted to be the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum. That was why he had some resentment towards Mimiko upon his emergence as the Chairman of the Forum in 2015. While I concede to our Governors the right to choose whoever they want to lead them, my point is that they should have settled for a balanced, more experienced and mature person to lead the Forum, not a cantankerous, divisive and unstable character like Governor Fayose who snaps at the slightest provocation. I know that the Forum boasts of Governors who are true leaders, not pretenders. There are those who are better educated, well-cultured and better exposed who are not working against the interest of their people and country. We have Governors who have held public offices since the return to democracy in 1999 but who are untainted. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) does not have any case against them. Those are the kind of people that could have been chosen to lead the Forum, not one with a goodwill deficit whose hands have been found in the public till.”
Kashamu said the choice of Fayose as the Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum will further polarise the party and destroy it.
His words, “How many of the notable leaders of the party in Ekiti State and the South West are ready to work with Governor Fayose? He had the opportunity to fight for the interest of the good people of Ekiti State and Yoruba land but he flunked it, preferring to promote impunity and side with a tiny clique who will always do his bidding. How can our respected leaders stay aloof and allow this to happen when they are aware of the genesis of the crisis in the party – Fayose’s and Mimiko’s unbridled ambition to impose their will on the party and ride roughshod over all other stakeholders of the party in the South West. The other day, he lured our father, Chief Olabode George to Port Harcourt and sought to disgrace him at the rescheduled National Convention in August, 2016.
The Senator recalled that Governor Fayose brought Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and sold his candidature to other stakeholders.
“But when he saw that Senator Sheriff would not be pliable in his inordinate ambition to arbitrarily hand him the critical structures of the party from the South West zone to the national level, he cooked up a lot of lies and sold them to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and others in order to discredit Sheriff.
"Even now, his utterances about the lingering national leadership are a pointer to the fact that he will exacerbate the crisis. Anyone who thinks that Sheriff is not needed in the efforts to restore peace to the party must be joking. I wager that Fayose’s conduct and utterances will widen the division in the party and more people will use it as an alibi to continue to defect to other parties.
"I am aware that more PDP Senators and members of the House of Representatives, including the three Senators from Ekiti State are consulting among themselves with a view to dumping the PDP very soon, all because of Fayose’s deception, divisive tendencies and arrogance.
“We must reject Governor Fayose now or strictly restrict him to running the affairs of the Governors’ Forum while well-meaning leaders and elders of the party who are not part of the crisis bedeviling the party are allowed to take charge of the affairs of the party and run it properly and legitimately,” he said.
The lawmaker went on, "Fayose keeps boasting that he is the oldest Governor in Nigeria and that he is the only one who has defeated two incumbents. The fact is: he did not do it alone. Some people pulled resources together to help him achieve those feats. But, the question is: where are they today? Most of them have left him when he showed them his true character. Even in Ekiti State, he cannot put members and leaders of the party together. He sees himself as the Alpha and Omega of the party in the state, shutting out any voice of dissent.
"It is important to remind Fayose that the true measure of success 'is not how far but how well'. The Governors' Forum is made up of seasoned, experienced and respected political leaders who have been consistent with the PDP since its foundation in 1998 unlike Fayose who could not manage his first term, went to exile and later abandoned the PDP for the Labour Party (LP), only to return in 2014 or thereabout.
"Now, we are aware he is in talks with the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and those who want to float the so-called Mega Party. He has not been able to organise the party in Ekiti State, let alone the South West zone and the national level. In fact, he is on record as saying he does not know if the 2018 Governorship and House of Assembly election in Ekiti State would be contested on the platform of PDP.
“Therefore, if he has failed to bring the much-need leadership skills to bear on the party in Ekiti State, which superior and respectable South West zonal leader and elder will listen to him? Of course, I am not the leader of the party in the zone. But, I am one of the foot-soldiers and voices of the party in the zone. I interact with our leaders, elders and stakeholders across the zone. I know their feelings and views.
"If Fayose thinks that his emergence has conferred on him some advantage that he wants to use to perpetrate the illegalities that led the party to where it is today, some of us will continue to resist him vigorously. For, as they say, it is not over until it is over. Fayose had better restrict himself to brain-washing his colleagues in the Governors' Forum. If he seeks to lord his wishes over the constitutionally recognized organs and structures of the party, trying to impose the minority over the majority, then peace will continue to elude party."
Kashamu said Fayose has about 12 months before he will use his usual turban and attempt to escape through Benin Republic to Ghana because of all the messy things he has done with Ekiti State resources and ONSA funds and for which he would be held accountable.
He said it would be a long shot if anyone told Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his team as well as Senator Ahmed Makarfi and his team that the reserved judgment of the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt would resolve the national leadership crisis of the party, adding that, “it is pure deceit, self-delusion and a mere wishful thinking”.
He therefore urged the superior leaders and elders of the party in the Board of Trustees (BoT), the Governors Forum and the leadership of the PDP in the National Assembly as represented by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu; Senate and Reps Minority Leaders, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Hon. Leo Ogor, to prevail on Senators Sheriff and Makarfi to step down for the party to move forward.
The various blocs could then constitute a committee that would organise an all-embracing National Convention within 30 to 45 days, he added.
The lawmaker suggested that on the day such a meeting would be called, the National Executive Committee (NEC) should meet to ratify the decisions reached at the meeting.
He said any of the two leaders who refused to accept such a proposition would then be seen as the one who does not have the interest of the party at heart.
“If that is what they have to do for the party to survive, then they must do it if there is no hidden agenda. I love and cherish the two leaders but the party is bigger than any and all of us,” Kashamu said.
He noted that the problem with the PDP is that, “we talk too much, but without a strategy. No (financial) commitment, no action, no implementation and no finishing. How then does anyone expect the party to move forward or succeed? We envy the others but are not ready to pay the price of perseverance, selflessness and dedication that they paid to get them to where they are today. If we must get things right, we need to wake up from our slumber and be organized and proactive. You cannot give what you don’t have. A disorganized and tactless person cannot successfully lead a respected body like the PDP Governors’ Forum, let alone the party. If care is not taken, his so-called leadership of the Forum could.

The event, titled: “Gwandu Emirate: the domain of Abdullahi Fodio since 1805,” was organised by the Gwandu Emirate Development Association.
