PoliticsSierra Leone Cancels Christmas As Ebola Crisis Deepens by ceo4eva(op): 6:09pm On Dec 12, 2014
Sierra Leone said Friday it was banning any public Christmas celebrations as the spiralling caseload of Ebola infections continues to spread alarm.

Soldiers are to be deployed throughout the festive period to force people venturing onto the streets back indoors, the government’s Ebola response unit said.

Palo Conteh, head of the department, told reporters in the capital Freetown there would be “no Christmas and New Year celebrations this year”.

“We will ensure that everybody remains at home to reflect on Ebola,” he said.

“Military personnel will be on the streets at Christmas and the New Year to stop any street celebrations,” he said, without saying which areas would be targeted.

While Islam is the dominant religion in Sierra Leone, more than a quarter of the population is Christian and public gatherings and entertainment are common during the holiday period.

Conteh did not give the exact dates of the crackdown or list any exceptions. During previous local and nationwide anti-Ebola curfews, people were allowed out to worship and for “essential business”.

Under current emergency regulations, bars and nightspots have already been shut down and public gatherings outlawed but there is no general ban on going outdoors or working.

Sierra Leone, which has overtaken Liberia to become the country worst affected by Ebola, has recorded 1,319 new infections in the last three weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday there were 17,942 cases of the tropical fever across eight countries as of December 7, resulting in 6,388 deaths — almost all in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone reported 397 new cases during the week ending December 7 — three times as many as Liberia and Guinea combined, WHO said.
Sources with knowledge of government policy told AFP detailed instructions on the workings of the Christmas curfew would be announced shortly.

The country now counts a total of 7,897 Ebola cases, including 1,768 deaths, according to Wednesday’s tally.

A full third of the new cases, or 133 of them, were reported in Freetown, at the heart of the ongoing surge in cases seen in the west of the country.

Sierra Leone has already quarantined around half its population of six million, sealing off districts across the country in a bid to combat the Ebola outbreak.

The government imposed a two-week lockdown on the eastern diamond mining district of Kono on Wednesday after eight cases of Ebola were confirmed in one day.

The WHO’s national Ebola coordinator Olu Olushayo said doctors and nurses were “at their wits’ end.”

In the space of 11 days, two WHO teams buried 87 victims, including a nurse and an ambulance driver enlisted to help dispose of corpses piling up in the local hospital, the agency said.

The government reacted with surprise to the WHO’s claims, however, saying Friday they did not tally with reports from the ground and announcing that investigators had been sent to assess the situation in Kono.

Local media said officials at the district’s main public hospital in Koidu had also been taken aback by the reports.

Aiah Beyonquee, the leader of the local burial team, told the state-run Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation no bodies had been stacked at the hospital.

“On Wednesday we had about 10 alert calls for death cases in the community which we reacted to,” he told the broadcaster.

“There were also five deaths in the hospital and all these were buried the same day.”

Worried by threat of a strike by the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba yesterday ordered all zonal Assistant Inspectors General, AIGs, and Command Commissioners to strictly monitor the activities of their personnel.

Strike in the Police Force is seen as mutiny, and since 2002, the rank and file of the force have often threatened to embark on industrial action, with the threat becoming more often since April 1, 2012 when some policemen actually downed tools.

The IG, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu and made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, said his decision was a direct reaction to a publication in which some policemen had threatened to go on strike.

Some police inspectors had met and demanded the release of the third batch of the “ASCON ASP Promotion Course”, which they said was “supposed to have commenced at the Police Staff College, Jos since January 2012 but was put on hold by the former IGP, Mohammed Abubakar despite a directive from the Police Service Commission to release the batch for the course.”

The communiqué, signed by Inspector James Baba, Sergeant Philip Adeojo and Pat Raphael, also called on the police authorities and the IG to pay the backlog of promotion allowances and arrears of the rank and file since 2013 to date.

It also urged the IG to address the issue of distribution of uniforms among others.

Consequently, the group said if within two weeks nothing was done on the issues affecting the welfare of the junior cadre of the force “we will have no options again than to mobilise our colleagues nationwide to embark on strike and we will not call it off until all our demands are met by the police authority.

“We do not want a repeat of the April 1, 2012 history when junior officers of the force went on strike,” the group added.

However, Abba charged members of the Inspectorate as well as the rank and file of the Force to remain resolute in pursuit of their statutory duties, saying his management team is bent on ensuring that they get their welfare entitlements as and when due. He also noted that the problems confronting the Nigeria Police Force were being addressed; adding that they should distance themselves from any act capable of jeopardising public peace or that may affect the nation’s nascent democracy.

While he warned that he will not condone any act of indiscipline, the IG reiterated that any person or group of persons caught making inciting statements in the Force would not only be punished internally, but would also be made to face the wrath of law.

“The IGP assures all police personnel that efforts are being made by the present Management Team of the Force to address Nigeria Police challenges and improve welfare, which includes promotions, courses, issuance of uniforms among others.

“The IGP further acknowledged their commitment to duties and professionalism at providing safety and securing the nation, and the sacrifices being made daily by officers,” he added.

The Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) on Thursday ratified the candidature of Mrs Dupe Onitiri-Abiola as the party’s flag bearer for the 2015 Lagos State governorship election.

NAN reports that the candidate is one of the wives of the Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the widely acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Her ratification as the UPN gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State took place during the party’s congress at its secretariat in Lagos.

Addressing newsmen after the congress, Abiola said that she had the pedigree to challenge candidates of other political parties for the governorship seat.

She said: “The UPN has been around for a very long time. “This is the party that was founded by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and resuscitated by Dr Fredrick Fasheun.

“I am from the prominent Onitiri Family of Lagos and married to Abiola. I have a very great chance because the democracy Nigeria is enjoying today flows from the blood of Abiola.”

According to her, she is contesting for the governorship position to make a difference in the lives of the citizenry.

“I am very optimistic of winning. We are going to start from ground zero because there is nothing on ground. The UPN stands for free education, free health care, poverty reduction and infrastructural development.

“It is ironic that some of the people who claim that they fought for this democracy are not doing the right thing. They know that MKO died so that the people of this country can live well and be happy.

“If you are claiming to be a part of that struggle, you have no reason to make people to suffer in this country,” she added.

Earlier, the state Chairman of UPN, Mr Femi Ikuomola, who presented the party’s flag to Abiola, said that she was endorsed by delegates across the various local government areas of Lagos State.

Ikuomola said that Abiola was picked because of her pedigree and integrity, adding that the party was optimistic of her success at the polls.

He said:”The UPN is a party with a clear manifesto which includes free education, healthcare, affordable accommodation and poverty eradication. We have the money in Lagos State to make these to happen.

“We intend to address the poor people who have been neglected to make Lagos a comfortable place for everybody.”

Ikuomola urged residents of the state not to be swayed by cash gifts and other items that might be distributed by some parties to solicit for their votes.
