A Lawyer involved in the prosecution of a case challenging President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility in next year’s election, Wahab Olatoye, has said the vital documents needed to prosecute the case have been stolen. He said some men broke into his office in Abuja last Friday and stole “most of the files containing documents to be used in the eligibility suit and other vital documents.” Olatoye and Adejumo Ajagbe filed the suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja seeking an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney- General of the Federation (AGF) from allowing Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo to seek re-election next year. Olatoye said his office at Suite 33, Manga Plaza, Garki Area 11 was burgled on Friday night and vital documents he was using to pursue his case against the President and other vital documents were taken away. He said he had reported the incident at the Garki Police station. “It is really a great surprise to me, when I was called on Saturday morning that my office had been burgled by yet- to-be identified persons. It was my office alone that was burgled of the offices in the plaza. The thieves came in through the ceiling and ransacked the files. “Although, they made away with the money I left in the office, they also stole documents, especially the ones I am using in pursuing my case against the eligibility of President Jonathan to contest the election. “As a plaintiff in the matter and a lawyer, there are some documents I need to hand over to my lawyers, which I kept in the office. My computers were also destroyed, the office safe was damaged. “The matter has been reported at the FCDA Police Station in Garki. The police have promised to come on Monday morning for further investigation”, Olatoye said. Olatoye and Ajagbe are contending that by the virtue of provisions of sections 132(1), 135(2)(a) and (b), 137(1)(b), 142(1) and (2) of the constitution, the President and the Vice President elected in the same election and sworn into office on the same date were taken to have been elected for one term of four years. The plaintiffs also contended that by the virtue of the oaths taken by Jonathan and Sambo following the death of President Umaru Yar’adua in 2010 and their subsequent re-election in 2011, both of them were deemed to have completed the two terms allowed by law. Justice Ahmed Mohammed has fixed December 1 for hearing in the suit. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/vital-documents-in-suit-on-jonathans-eligibility-stolen/ |

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said Friday in London that the Federal Government, the Nigerian Armed Forces and security agencies were working very hard to ensure that Boko Haram do not capture more Nigerian territories. Speaking at the opening of the meeting of Nigeria’s Honorary International Investment Council (HIIC), President Jona-than assured the gathering that the Armed Forces and security agencies were making steady gains in recovering areas recently taken by Boko Haram. His remarks, however, underscored the menace of the insurgents who have been seizing Nigerian towns and killing Nigerians. It has been so bad that for a short period that no Nigerian town fell to the insurgents the President had some relief. And he indicated that in his remarks in London. Said he: “We are improving on security. For about a week now there have been no reports of Boko Haram seizing more territories. Rather, we are steadily pushing them back. The impression being created by sections of the media that the situation is worsening is not true. I can assure you that it will never get worse,” President Jona-than told the gathering. The President also seized the opportunity of the occasion to call for greater support from the National Assembly for the Federal Government’s efforts to curb terrorism, insurgency and insecurity in the country. He told members of the council headed by Baroness Lynda Chalker that he had offered himself as a candidate in Nigeria’s next presidential elections because he was convinced that with four more years in office, he will be able to further consolidate the positive national reforms initiated by his adminis-tration and take them to a point of irreversibility for the good of all Nigerians. “As you already know, I have indicated my willingness to carry on for another four years if I am given the opportunity so that we can carry forward some of the reforms we have been talking about,” the President said. He cited the expansion of transportation infrastru-cture, improvement of local content in Nigeria’s oil industry, more inclusive economic growth, job creation and national security which are on the agenda of the meeting as some of the areas in which his administration still hoped to achieve further improvements. “We cannot move the economy forward without good infrastructure. We have been working very hard in that area. We have improved our road network significantly. In the next three to four years, we should be able to resurface almost all federal roads in the country and begin new ones. “We are improving our airport terminals and aviation security. Reforms are also ongoing at our ports to drastically reduce the time required for import clearance formalities. “In the rail sector, we may require private sector funds to quicken the pace of development. Our goal is to link all state capitals by rail. It may not be an objective that can be achieved by a single administration, but we want to lay a solid foundation that others can build on. “We are also promoting the increase of local content in our oil industry, because that is the only way in which our people will benefit more from the industry and begin to see themselves as true stakeholders who need to protect and help in the development of our oil and gas resources,” President Jonathan said. He thanked Baroness Chalker and other members of the council for their valuable advice to the Federal Government over the years. The meeting later went into a closed door session to receive briefings, updates and presentations from relevant ministers and council members. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/nigerian-territory-fallen-boko-haram-one-week-jonathan-celebrates-london/ PHOTO: PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN (R) AND THE COUNCIL CO-ORDINATOR, HONOURARY INTERNATIONAL INVESTOR COUNCIL (HIIC), BARONESS LYNDA CHALKER, AT THE 17TH HIIC MEETING IN LONDON

President Jonathan's Declaration Statement

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday formally dissolved the Dr. Haliru Bello-led Presidential Declaration Committee at a luncheon he organised in honour of the members at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The committee was the brain behind the President’s formal declaration on November 11 in Abuja. Jonathan boasted at the event that he is yet to see any party that will beat the PDP in the general elections. He said while opposition parties would continue to make noise, they cannot beat the ruling party because PDP does things differently. The President said, “I’m yet to see those who can beat PDP. They will continue to make the noise but they cannot beat us, because the gap between PDP and others is astronomical. “The way we do things and the way they do things is very different; the way we talk and the way they talk is very different; the way we reason and the way they reason is very different. “Our commitment to transform this country and their thinking about Nigeria is very different. And I promise you my party men and women and indeed all Nigerians that with your support, collectively we must move this country to where we want it to be. “Everyday, every week and every month we must add something, we must change and continue to change.” http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-dissolves-declaration-committee/ |
