As a business owner or blogger, you may need to write from time to time. If you don’t know how to write faster and better you will waste your time. I will show you 7 ways to write even faster and better without losing the quality of your writing. Research Have an outline Set a time limit for yourself Don’t edit as you write Do away with distraction Use some writing tools Write 1. Research Except you are Google, you don’t know about everything in this life. You need to research the topic you want to write about before you start writing. This will save you time and ensure that you don’t get stuck along the way as you write. Good research will also ensure that you have quality work to deliver and not just some random thoughts from your head. Research has become easier than ever before. You don’t need to go to the library or interview an expert before you can get the information that you need. This is also a great way to get information but since we are talking about how to be faster, you have to do it faster. You can easily use any search engine to get all you want. Google is a good example that can get you most of the information you need. 2. Have an outline Writing with an outline will not only make you write faster, but it will also make your writing have a direction and focus. This will give your writing more credibility and quality. You don’t have to talk about a thousand things in one article without making any valid conclusion on any of these points. It is better to focus on one point and deliver it excellently well. An outline is just like a foundation for your work to be built on. It is said that if the foundation is faulty, then what can a righteous man do? Lay your foundation well and you will be able to write well, too. 3. Set a time limit for yourself As I am writing this article, I have a stopwatch set on my phone. This motivates me to write faster. How this works is that it gives you a deadline you have to meet. The next point explains how you can write the number of words you have set to write within a particular time. 4. Don’t edit as you write Many writers are tempted to do this. They don’t want to make mistakes. They want to be perfect. Do away with perfection. Nobody can be perfect. It is difficult to do two things at a time. Writing and editing mean doing two things at a time. You won’t be effective in doing it. Another disadvantage is that it doesn’t let your writing flow. By the time you go back to edit a mistake that you observe, you may forget an idea that is in your head. And once it’s gone you may never get it back. Let everything flow freely. You are permitted to write a not-so-good draft. Nobody will rate you for writing a poor draft. 5. DO away with distraction Distraction will reduce the quality of your work and increase the time it will take you to complete the writing task. Getting rid of distractions can be as simple as clearing your writing desk. Look for a serene environment with fewer people. Block out distraction by using an earplug or earphone. 6. Use some writing tools The internet has tools that can make you write better. These tools will help you to detect mistakes that you may easily overlook. • Grammarly helps you to detect grammar mistakes that you may not see. For example, a common writing app like Microsoft office will help you detect some common typing mistakes but it won’t detect some complex ones. • Hemingway app will help you write concisely. Nobody wants to read long and clumsy paragraphs. This app will help you to write long sentences in a way that is easy to read and understand. 7. Write I know you may wonder why this last point is here. But if you are a writer, you must have encountered the demon called writers-block. It is a demon. It will come and attack you if you are a writer. It will look at you with its scary eyes. It will open its ugly mouth to suck up your creative juice. It feeds on your fear. It feeds on your procrastination. But you must not let it overcome you. The only way to do this is by writing. Whether it makes sense or not, just write. When you sit down, tell yourself that you are not going to stand up unless you have achieved your writing goals. Just write. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make sense at first. If you don’t have yearly goals yet please don’t write any. Don’t be pressured by people who already have several goals to make one for yourself. You don’t need it. Goal setting is a means of escape from doing what you are supposed to do. Check out the previous years that you have goals. Did you achieve them? So if you have set goals for yourself already, please do away with it. I am going to show you a better way to do it. There is a story in the bible about the early days of men. When men were still very few on the face of the earth. It was a story about how these early men wanted to build a skyscraper. It would have been the tallest that would have ever existed. They wanted the roof to reach the heavens. They wanted a skyscraper and they will get one. They got land to use. They got the best bricks available. They got the best workers one ground. All they wanted was a skyscraper. God never wanted what they were doing but here is what he has to say about it. Genesis 11:6 “And the Lord said, behold, the people is one, and they have all one language, and this which they began to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined doing.” The end of the story is that they were not able to complete it. But there are a few things to pick from their story. God is not the only factor that determines the success of your goal. You are the most important factor. Going to church to shout “Amens” and “I receive it” on the first day of the year is not a guarantee that you will achieve your goals. Another thing to pick from this story is that they wanted just one thing. They wanted a building whose top reached heaven and they were going to get it. They had one language which means focus. They had one thing in mind. Not two. Real goals are always SMART. Smart is an acronym for SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC and TIME BOUND. Specific means you do not try to achieve 15 things at once. Pick one thing that you want. Stay on that one thing and get it. After, you can get another one thing you want. Goals are not wishes. Wishes are always endless while goals are specific. Measurable means you should have a meter to track your achievements. Don’t fall into the trick of saying I want to make more money this year. Instead, have an exact amount of money in mind that you want. The third one is achievable. No goal is unachievable. Sometimes, because of our current situation, we tend to underestimate or overestimate what is achievable. Because you make #20,000 - #30,000 per month (the real story of many serving corps members in Nigeria) you may be quick to assume that it is impossible to double or triple this amount. To be achievable simply means how far can you see into the future? Can you draw a 12 months plan for your goal and be sure of what you will achieve every month? Realistic means it should be realistic. This one also can, as the one above, be different for each person. Don’t lie to yourself. Sometimes, we set a specific goal that has met all of the above but it is not real. You may need to have more skills and qualifications than you currently have to achieve a particular goal. Time-bound. Time is the real currency we bank on as humans. Time is the reason why everything exists. We all have a limit. We all have a particular period we will exist. This is one of the arguments I will and can never support. If you really wish to serve your country for that one year then you have to wear those trousers. It is impossible to use all the baggy skirts they all have on for the camping activities, especially the man-o-war drills.
