Simple solution, people will keep their fx at home or in neighboring countries. It is the country that will lose as fx inflows from others sources other than government and exports will reduce drastically. The Black market will boom. CBN is just trying to manage how much it pays out of fx earnings. Attacking the problem only from the expense side will falter in the long run. |

Politics › Re: War Against Money Laundering: Banks, PDP Kick Against Cbn’s Policy by CHANCEMAN: 8:07am On Aug 03, 2015 |
The exchange rate drop is an immediate reaction to the new regulation, why not wait to see the end result and effects. Read between the lines, if you block one source, that might affect speculators ,but how about the real businesses that need the forex? They will look for another avenue, like the shift to neighboring countries as postulated by the BDC assoc. president. Remember the modern economy is a global one,we cannot operate in isolation. If Nigerian banks refuse dollar deposits the money will go elsewhere or be converted to other alternatives. The problem we are having is that we attach too much importance to the exchange rate rather than purchasing power of the currency. |

Business › Re: The Exaggerated Impact Of Iran's Oil Deal On Nigeria and Global Economy by CHANCEMAN: 5:42pm On Jul 16, 2015 |
Truth234: He doesn't even have ministers yet, I don't even think they have complete understanding of the situation. Lets see if his current relationship with U.S will be good enough for them to resume patronage with us. Why do you think US patronage is crucial? You forget that the US is a major oil producing country and it is also working at alternative sources of energy, any respite from them will be temporary. The country needs to strategize long term. We need to move away from emphasis on crude to its refined products that have added value and are also input for other manufacturing industries like plastics etc. |

deeobserver209: You made a point. However it is to the best interest to the Nigerian economy that short-term measures be adobted to stabilize the value of the naira for the time being until our industrial sector gets back on tract. You think turning around our industrial sector will be a short term thing? We need to establish an environment conducive for manufacturing to thrive and that will take a while to achieve. We need foreign investments too to supplement local sources. Agreed the CBN strategy is directed at altering the Nigerian consumption pattern, but the issue is how long can the CBN sustain it. |
Business › Re: ThisDay: Why The CBN Got It Right by CHANCEMAN: 11:59pm On Jul 12, 2015 |
deeobserver209: The decision by CBN is a smart one. By Curbing the demand for dollars through bane of rice and toothpicks import, they have saved the Naira from unnecessary pressure. This will help provide lifeline for our currency and stabilize its value considerable against the dollar. No wonder The Economist magazine people were furious. Emefiele is a good economist. How will it stabilize the value of the currency when there is a large margin between the official rate and the black market rate? This measure is only a short term measure as the pressure on the currency still exist, only shifting from the official market to the unofficial market. It needs to be supported by fiscal policy to have long term beneficial effect. That there is a price differential indicates that the demand exist. The crux of the matter is, how do you satisfy this demand within a reasonable period of time with minimal inflationary effect. |

peaceland: Oga Spyder, well done sir, on a different note and just wondering aloud - I am worried at the volume of wood we use in construction in this part of the world (and perhaps world over). is there no renewable or sustainable material that can be used for the planks being used here? - this is one of the few reasons why woodwork and furniture are getting extremely expensive (in my opinion). I know you are quite intelligent and believe you are already looking at more sustainable ways. The way the world is going (maybe not now in Africa) soon businesses will not be able to get good deals if they do not inculcate environmentally sustainable measures. Thank you sir Is wood not renewable material? |

20thAccountLOL: then they better just scrape ATM lobbish *incompetent people* if only they know how much foreign transaction we do with ATM everyday iranu That is the whole point of the restriction, to curtail spending on foreign items thereby reducing demand for Fx. When it becomes hard for you to buy goods overseas, you will start considering local alternatives or change your consumption pattern. |

How was Soludo able to merge the two markets together? That is the only feasible long term solution ,other than a miracle happening, like a spike in crude oil prices or the emergence of another export cash cow. As long as the exchange rate is managed administratively without sufficient reserves to back it on a long term basis the disparity in rates will continue. The restrictions have to be limited. The signs of things to come started when Sanusi stopped payment of money transfer inflows in forex. |
Business › Re: Bank Ceos Call For Further Naira Devaluation by CHANCEMAN: 10:28pm On Jun 26, 2015 |
Orunto: This call for further devaluation by the banks seems very disappointing. What do we buy from the US, UK, EU etc that are so important, that we cannot find local alternatives? Also, what do we sell, to these foreign countries, other than the crude oil that we want to reduce the prices further to sell more? How much less do we want the oil price to fall before we see beyond our eyes? Are the banks trying to make the economy unworkable for this Government? You want to sell oil concession, are you devaluing to enable you sell to your foreign friends cheaply? Unless Nigeria has other exports than crude oil, please let the CBN bring back a higher value for our Naira. With our current consumption pattern how long do u think we can protect the Naira without depleting our reserves significantly and further worsening our economic position? There has to be a trade -off protect the naira at the risk of further reduction in our reserves or allow a devaluation to preserve and if probably grow our reserves as our BOP situation improves. |
