Members of Indigenous People of Bi­afra (IPOB) on yesterday protested round the major streets of Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State over the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu of the Radio Bi­afra fame with a vow to shot down the city on Monday. This was in de­fiance of the warning of the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase for the group to discon­tinue its violent protests across the South East.

The IGP had in a statement issued through the Spokes­person of the force, Olabisi Kolawole warned that the group should stop its protest as information suggested that members of IPOB were plan­ning to use dangerous weap­ons during its protest in some of the southeast states of the country.

The protest which started as early as 7.00am saw mem­bers of IPOB march peace­fully through the streets of Aba in their thousands, carrying Biafran flags, flex bearing the image of their detained leader and chanting solidarity songs.

They also carried placards some of which called on the Federal Government and other International bodies to come to their assistance in order to help them achieve a sovereign state of Biafra and the release of their leader, Kanu.

Sunday Sun gathered that as early as 7am the pro­testers had assembled at a location near Ariaria Inter­national market where they were at initial stage pre­vented from taking off by a combined team of Police and other security agencies.

However, between 11am and 12noon, members of IPOB re-grouped and went round Ariaria International market with a bell warning that the market would close for business on Monday for a proposed mega rally, stress­ing that anybody that would defy the order would be seen as anti Biafra.

After beating the security web, the group around noon took off from a different lo­cation to match along major streets of Aba, including Faulks road, Aba-Owerri, Aba-Ikot Ekpene among oth­er places, causing gridlock.

It is not the best of times for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ‎as the ‎Taraba State Election Petition Tribunal, yesterday, ‎sacked Governor Darius Ishaku, its candidate in the April 11 gubernatorial poll, from office.‎‎

‎The tribunal, ‎which sat at the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, in a unanimous judgment by a three-man panel of judges, ‎yesterday, declared Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan‎ of the ‎All Progressives Congress, APC, ‎as the winner of the poll.

In the meantime, Aisha Alhassan is one of the 37 ministers-designate expected to be sworn-in by President Muhammadu Buhari next week.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had concluded the Taraba State governorship election on ‎April 25, after the initial poll was declared inconclusive.‎
In its judgment, the Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar-led tribunal said it was satisfied that Ishaku was not validly nominated by the PDP to contest the election.

The tribunal maintained that there was overwhelming evidence that the PDP in Taraba sidelined the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010, and the 1999‎ Constitution, as amended, when it decided to hold the primary election that produced Ishaku as its candidate in Abuja instead of Jalingo, the state capital.

It held that the purported nomination of the governor for the election, without a valid primary election monitored by INEC, was in breach of Sections 85, 87 and 138(1) of the Electoral Act 2010, as well as Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The tribunal stressed that the governorship primary election, the PDP held at its National Headquarters in Abuja, on December 11, 2014, was not known to the law and was, therefore, invalid.

Besides, the panel held that the PDP failed to give cogent and verifiable reason why it decided to hold the said primary election in Abuja without the consent of INEC.
According to the tribunal, it is a fundamental law in Nigeria that a candidate for an elective position must be duly nominated and sponsored by a registered political party before the candidature of such person could be deemed to be legally valid.

Ishaku-AlhassanIt said that the proof of evidence, adduced before it by all the parties, showed that the PDP did not conduct a valid primary election that could have led to the emergence of anybody as its sponsored candidate for the governorship contest.

Besides, the tribunal noted that INEC ‎confirmed that it was not part of the primary election that produced Ishaku as the PDP candidate, saying Section 85 of the Electoral Act made it mandatory that PDP must give the electoral body 21 days notice before it could hold a convention or primary to nominate its governorship candidate.

President Muhammadu Buhari has scrapped the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) and ordered the Presidential Committee and workers of the agency to wind down operations.

The AUTHORITY learnt that President Buhari's directive was conveyed to the SURE-P Committee headed by Mr. Ishaya Dary Akau as Chairman, through a letter from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir David Lawal.

SURE-P Scrapped by The Federal Government

On Monday, The AUTHORITY had exclusively reported that the SURE-P office had been deserted by contractors, workers and members of the Presidential Committee because of non-funding by the current administration.

There were also indications that the President has ordered a probe into their activities, funding and expenditure of the agency.

SURE-P was established by former President Goodluck Jonathan to manage revenue accruing from the partial removal of fuel subsidy in 2012.

A man from Imo State shot his girlfriend, Onyinyechi in the head at close range, after she rejected his marriage proposal.

Sources close to the couple told newsmen that the man was especially frustrated about the rejection, as he had paid Onyinyechi’s school fees for years.

22-year-old Onyinyechi was, until her death, a final year student of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking on the incident, a resident in the area said, “We heard that the boy picked the bills for the girl’s education, but that the girl later abandoned the boy and opted to marry another man. We have even heard that the marriage has been fixed before the boyfriend struck.”

Another source stated, “the deceased was, last Saturday, lured out of her family home by the boyfriend at about 7 p.m. Some people, who were close to the scene of the crime that night, reported that as soon as the boy saw the girl approaching him, he fired at her.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, says, “Police have started investigating the incident and the late girl’s parents are cooperating with us. Police will get to the root of the case.”

There are two random but famous declarations – one little remembered today, the other something of a mantra – that neatly wrap up the national antiparty to inexorable change and its management.

On January 15, 1970, there was a ceremony at Dodan Barracks, Lagos, the then seat of political power. Biafran acting Head of State, General Philip Effiong, Colonel David Ogunewe, Colonel Patrick Anwunah, Colonel Patrick Amadi and Police Commissioner Patrick Okeke had gone to submit Biafra’s document of surrender, which officially marked the end of the civil war. “The so-called rising sun of Biafra has set forever,” declared Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, on that occasion. In the leaps and dips of Nigeria’s turbulence, it is common to hear politicians of varying persuasions declaring, as a way of “helping” to stabilise the listing ship of state, that “Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable.”

Between Gowon’s presumption of Biafra’s finality, which rode on the crest of triumphalism and was hailed as prescient by many, including Gowon’s biographer Professor Isawa Elaigwu, and the incessantly voiced exclusion of terms on Nigeria’s oneness, lies the country’s problematic. General Gowon is alive and bouncing. Were he to honestly comment on his 45-year old declaration today, he would readily admit to not having thoroughly considered all sides of everything. For it is clearly outside the bounds of political authority to decree the irreversible amputation of human predilection and proclivity. The current hoopla around Biafra lends credence to the assertion.

Wonders as they say, will never end. This story will shock you to your bones. Four men have been accused of beheading a 4 years little boy. Whatever be the reason, i believe everyone has a right to life. And no one on have the right to snuff out the life of another. Some days ago, a Magistrate Court situated in Iragbiji, Osun state has ordered that four men be remanded in the Ilesa Prison custody for allegedly killing a four year old boy whose name is Bakare Teslim.

Below are the various names and age of the accused persons. They are 60 year old Ganiyu Abidoye, Taju Ganiyu, aged 25, Aremu Moshood, 48 and Agboola Abdulwasiu, aged 31 were all arrested on Monday, 26th October, 2015 by the Osun state Police.

According to reports, the four accused persons were said to have kidnapped Bakare Teslim on the 9th October, 2015 at about 6.17pm at his village Agbelekale area of Iragbiji in Osun state before he was beheaded with a knife in the closet.

According to the official reports from the police, “that you Taju Ganiyu, Aremu Moshood, Agboola Abdulwasiu and Ganiyu Abidoye on 9th October, 2015 at about 6.17pm at Agbelekale area of Iragbiji in Iragbiji Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit kidnapping of one Bakare Teslim, aged 4.”

In response to the recent pro Bianfra Protest by some youths in the in the Eastern, Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has dismissed the threat to Nigeria’s unity as he also said that with Biafra it is finished and General Yakubu Gowon made this statement recently in reaction to the resent protests by some youths.

General Yakubu Gowon told newsmen that Nigerians have put behind them the bad memories of the 1967 civil war, and that those behind these protests on Biafra don’t have an inkling what the Biafra war cost Nigerians.

The elder statesman speaking in Lafia, the Nasarwa State capital shortly after a malaria eradication campaign questioned that ‘do they want us to go to another war? but hoped and I prayed to God that such should not happen.’

According to him, went further to say that those involved in this campaign were being driven by just a few people and that majority of the Igbo people do not share the same view.

‘It is only them, the few, that are there but the majority of the Igbo people that I know are not with them’

Acceding to the fact that the protesters have the right to express their feelings he stated “with Biafra it is finished”.

He also told newsmen that these people ‘let them say their views, yes it democracy but let s make sure they can express their wishes and desires but let them remember with Biafra it is finished. it is not a threat’

He further said that keeping Nigeria one was behind all that he did and not for hatred for the Igbo as that was what Odumegwu Ojukwu also stood for.

All I did is not a result of hatred against the Igbos but on the principle of keeping Nigeria one and this is all we are trying to do and that was why at the end of the war in other to see that there is no heard feeling we used the term no victor no vanquished

In respond to recent protest going on for the creation of a Biafran Country by the some Eastern Youths, some enabled personnel in the country have been fielded questions to to hear their own quota.

Chief Checkwas Okorie, founder of embattled All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in this interview, have called on President Buhari administration to be very creative and meticulous in addressing Biafra agitation issue else we might be facing another similar situation like what the country faced in 1967.

Question - The agitation for Biafra has continued several decades after civil war. What is the problem?

The issue for the agitation for Biafra has to do with agitation for self-determination by people who wish to be treated with fairness, equity and justice.

Most of the young men on the street agitating for Biafra were born after the war and so looks like they do not know what led to the war. They cannot understand why their own people since they were born are invariably different from their peers in other parts of the country.

The South-east has suffered the most neglect from the Federal Government of Nigeria in terms of road construction. Even under former President Jonathan’s administration, it was not any better.

The Buhari’s administration has just begun, so we cannot blame him that much. The matter was not picked up because Buhari became President; the Biafran agitation had been there practically since early 90s. But if Buhari manages to address the agitation, the issue will die down. After all the Niger-Delta militancy preceeded the late President Yar’Adua. But his political moves doused the tension in that region with the initiative of amnesty.

It was the mismanagement of the Boko-Haram issue by the extra judicial killings of their leader that generated trouble in that region andt has turned to war in Nigeria.

Arresting of agitators of the emancipation of Biafran state in my view, we have not learning from the Boko-Haram experience.

Question - The promoter of Biafra Radio, Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested by the DSS sparking protests in some major Igbo towns. What is the way out?

The government should release him unconditionally. If government feels her right has been infringed upon,she can go to court to press charges against him. You are aware that he has good lawyers to defend him. If care is not taken, it will become a celebrated case that would be tried under Nigeria laws. Because we have heard about radio Kudirat, it was not a properly registered radio. One of the ministerial nominees, Kayode Fayemi, said he had headed an illegal radio station before. Even the pro-APC radio that operated during the campaign period was not properly registered. I have not listened to Radio Biafra to know its position but I was informed that it is aggressive. It is people’s choice to decide to tune to it or not to.

I understand there have been attempts to use technology to jam the frequency of the radio but the attempts appear to have failed. The arrest of Boko-Haram leader Muhammed Yusuf was given as reason for the violence and spread of Boko-haram that has developed into a full-blown war in the North-east.

The fact that so many people came out to protest the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu shows he has a very large followership! And the followership may result into violent force, if mismanaged and I don’t think Nigeria can afford another violent crisis at this point in time we are battling Boko-Haram. We were able to manage Niger-Delta militancy very well, we should device a creative way to address the issue of agitation.
