A heavily-armored limousine that has carried President Barack
Obama on numerous occasions over the past several years has gone missing, and the US Secret Service, as well as the FBI, the Washington DC Metro Police Department, and the US Capitol Police Department, are now scrambling to figure out where it is, who has it, and how it went missing in the first place. The presidential car, often called “Cadillac One” or “The Beast,” is one of a dozen heavily armed and armored presidential limousines, each costing more than $1 million and weighing nearly 8 tons. It has as much armor as a tank, doors that are similar to that of a 757 airplane, super-secret weapons and countermeasures, and can withstand biological weapons, improvised explosive devices (IED’s), and just about anything else you could throw at it. But none of that matters much if the car can’t be found. Sources inside Washington DC’s Metro Police Department say the Secret Service notified them Sunday evening that the car, which they labeled as “Number Nine,” had been missing for what was, at the time, less than one full hour. Metro Police and Capitol Police have been prowling DC for the car ever since, with FBI helicopters looking even further. But so far, no one has managed to deliver a single solid piece of evidence as to who has the car, how they got it, or where it is. And the car’s GPS systems apparently weren’t left on, as they’re supposed to be, so there’s no way of tracking the vehicle, either. Police scanners in the DC area picked up a lot of limo-related activity Sunday night, with law enforcement operators referring to the car as “Caddy One.” DC Metro seemingly pulled over four cars — probably civilian-owned Cadillac STS sedans — on Sunday evening and early Monday morning, but none of those were the President’s car. When asked, Secret Service Media Liaison Paul Horner openly admits the car is missing. “We don’t know where the Beast is, that’s true. I do however think it might be a little hasty to assume the car was `stolen.’ This isn’t a Toyota Camry we’re talking about here. This is one of the world’s most famous cars, stored in a heavily-guarded facility. So this is most likely a clerical issue. The car is probably safe and sound someplace, and we just didn’t dot the I’s correctly. We’ll have it back before most people even realize it’s missing.” However, one former US Secret Service agent, who asked that he remain anonymous, argues that the facility where the cars are kept isn’t as secure as Horner would have us believe. “There are only two cameras, it’s pretty dark, and all those vehicles are typically watched over by one guy and a guard dog, that’s it. The assumption is that no one would really dare to try and break in and steal a presidential limo, so they can cut costs and not protect those cars as much as you’d think. So you wouldn’t need to be Batman to break in and steal one. Some really industrious teenagers could probably pull it off.” As for President Obama, he’ll have to endure only getting to use the other eleven custom limousines built exclusively for his protection. “The President’s security is in no way compromised by this car going missing,” says Horner. “This is why we build so many of them. If anything happens to one of them, or even eleven of them, we still have the President covered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’ll have this one either found or replaced well before it’s ever an issue.”
