Former Nigerian three-term president, Olusegun Obasanjo was booed on an Emirates flight 783 from Dubai to Lagos on 14 November 2013. Obasanjo was returning from a business trip in Dubai when his countrymen gave him an unfriendly welcome on the flight with boos and invective. The Nigerians had been waiting on the cue to board when they were asked to make way for the First Class premium passenger. Eager to board “sharp sharp” (hurriedly) the Nigerian way, the Economy class passengers protested that after Obasanjo took them hostage for over 10 years as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, they were not so ready to step aside to make way for him, to control them from the “passenger seat”. Obasanjo first came to power in Nigeria through a military Coup d'Etat on 13 February 1976. He handed over power to Shehu Shagari on 1 October 1979 following democratic elections after two years in power. He went into private life as a farmer and traditional chief in Ogun State. He came back from retirement and contested elections winning twice to become civilian President from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. Nigerians blame him for most of their woes as they claim he is the Godfather of all Nigerian Presidents since the 1980s. They see his weight behind most past and present presidents of Nigeria. They have not also forgiven him for raiding and burning down the house of Fela Kuti, the late popular highlife musician. Fela and his family were beaten and raped and his mother, political activist Funmilayo Ransome Kuti was thrown out of a window to her death. Ikechuku, one of the passengers from Enugu, returning from a business trip to India, said Nigeria needed to fight a war before democracy; human rights and governance would come to the country. He said the three regional divide of the country represented in a Y is a bane that could only be corrected by a war. Merit will only be respected in Nigeria when that happens. Nkechi, another passenger on the Emirates flight touted him that Nigeria has been undergoing a perennial warfare since the Biafra war. Ikechuku waived her aside and said that was a political war with just one region, Biafra fighting the rest of the country. Obasanjo did not settle on his seat in the First Class. He stood up and went round the plane as if to test his popularity. Nobody stood up to challenge the political juggernaut of Nigerian politics, nor did they try to stop him. I asked Obasanjo, from my seat, if he was not afraid of being assaulted by an irate passenger. He was leaning over me screening my face as if looking for a lost friend. He showed me a Rastafarian walking behind him saying, “He takes care of me.” He also added that he is a survivor of many attempts on his life and was not scared of a few boos. Obasanjo escaped death on 13 February 1976 when Army Colonel Dimka targeted him and General Murtala Muhammed in a Coup d'Etat. Murtala was killed but Obasanjo and Theophilus Danjuma, chief of army staff survived. Obasanjo was appointed Head of State by the Supreme Military Council. Obasanjo spoke out against human rights abuses during the dictatorship of Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1998. He was arrested and imprisoned for his participation in an aborted coup. He was only released when Abacha died suddenly on 8 June 1998. Obasanjo believed since he became a born-again Christian in prison, no weapon fashioned against him shall prosper. The bodyguard with the looks of a joker was a resolute buffer between the former President and any attacker. A middle aged man stood up to follow the former president and he was promptly barred from getting too close. Former African presidents usually feel uneasy going around on commercial carriers. Some retired with private jets, and if allowed the luxury of a retirement flew on them. For most, contemplating retirement and returning to civilian life was unnerving. Such presidents will prefer to die in power than deprive themselves of the luxuries attached to the presidency. Probably conscious of the uneasiness of a former president in retirement, Obasanjo provoked a controversy when he planned to revise the constitution to allow him to run for a third and fourth term. Obasanjo is credited to have ushered in democracy with the 1979 Constitution of the Second Republic styled after the Constitution of the United States of America. Yet the trappings of absolute power blinded this visionary of Nigerian politics to want more than two terms in office and probably a life presidency. Nkechi intimated that if Obasanjo had appeared like that in an airport in Nigeria, he would have been pelted with rotten eggs. Emirates flight 783 from Dubai landed at Murtala Mohammed airport in Lagos Nigeria at 12:15 p.m. Obasanjo checked out without any further booing or pelting.. |

The city of Enugu was agog on Sunday 24th November 2013 while celebrating the Catholic Church feast of Corpus Christi-Christ the King. Catholic faithful left their different parishes on procession to Holy Ghost Cathedral, chanting, singing and proclaiming the Kingship of Jesus Christ. The Catholic adherents left their parishes including St Mary's Catholic Church, Trans Ekulu, Christ the King Parish, GRA, Sacred Heart Parish, Uwani, St Paul's Parish, Awkunanaw, St Bridget Abakpa, St Mary's Uwani and St Theresa Ugbo Odogwu among hundreds of parishes and trekked towards Holy Ghost Cathedral in unprecedented jubilant mood and occasionally the Blessed Sacrament was showered with flowers and incensed while the faithful kneel in adoration. Enugu simply came to a halt. It was Corpus Christi like never before. Estimated two hundred thousand persons converged at Holy Ghost Cathedral to terminate the procession and the moment was ecstatic for the participants. Prayers was said at the Cathedral and Diocesan Bishop , Rt Rev Dr Callistus Onaga was on hand to receive the jubilant congregants who proceeded back to their various bases mostly on foot while thanking God for this year's unusual turnout. The city of Enugu had in recent times been experiencing strange spiritual visitations which suggest that something new is about to happen to the Igbos of South East Nigeria. From September 12th -14th there was a three day crusade titled 'Enugu Restoration Crusade' organized by Christ Living spring Apostolic Ministry (CLAM) , a Lagos based church in conjunction with Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) ,Enugu State Chapter . CLAM is known for hosting city wide crusades in places directed by God and the three evening crusade was held at Okpara Square Enugu. It featured prophetic prayers for the restoration of the spiritual and economic fortunes of Enugu. The preacher, Pastor Wole Oladiyun prophesied that God had restored the coal industry in Enugu and that in a few years time many industries would spring up in the city as a result of economic revival. He also explained that revival is coming to the city and that God will raise a gospel minister from Enugu that will galvanize the people for a new move of God. The three day crusade was attended by leaders from various denominations including Archbishop A A Nwodika, Bishop Obi Onubogu, Ven Ejemba, Venerable O C Obi Okoye, Apostle Uzodike, Rev Obinna Akukwe, and Pastor Tony Ochu among others. The following month from the 27th -29th of October, Igbo ministers who spearheaded the fabled Pentecostal revival of the early 70's converged at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium for three days under the aegis of Igbo Restoration Assembly (IRA) to pray for the spiritual revival of Igbo nation and the restoration of its lost glory in Nigeria. The gathering of prophets told the congregation that the next phase of the expected worldwide end time revival that will herald the second coming of Jesus Christ will come from the South East. They referred to the famous Azusa Street Pentecostal Revival of Los Angeles, California, United States in 1913 and the ensuing prophecies which stated that after 100 years another revival that will signal the coming of Christ will come. The Azusa street revival is the origin of the Pentecostal movement and the return of speaking in tongues back to the church after it was lost for over 1500 years. The gathering identified 2013 as that 100th year after the Azusa revival and urged Igbos to prepare to lead in the coming revival that will turn people back to God. Some participants and preachers at the occasion include Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Emmanuel Chukwuma; Methodist Primate Most Rev Dr Samuel Uche,, former National President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria(PFN) Bishop Mike Okonkwo; former Chaplain of Aso Villa Chapel, Rev Williams Okoye; President of PFN Anambra State Chapter, Bishop David Eberechukwu; President of PFN Enugu State ,Bishop Obi Onubogu ;Archbishop A A Nwodika, Bishop Edward Ezenwafor, Apostle Austin Ukachi, Rev Obinna Akukwe, Bishop Paul Nwachukwu, Apostle Olughu Orji, Professor Uzodimma Nwala among others. Two weeks later, clerics in the city hosted Rev Rosy Madugba and Prophetess Sabina Akachukwu who introduced the Prophetic-Apostolic mandate on the 14th of October with a revival night vigil which drew clerics from different denominations at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and also with church leaders' special session on the 15th at Oakland Hotels. The participants were also told that some renowned expatriate prophets around the world have prophesied that the next worldwide revival will start from Nigeria while some others narrowed it specifically to the South East Nigeria. The clerics were told to prepare themselves and sensitize the people to follow in the end time revival. Archbishops Nwodika, Bishop Obi Onubogu, Apostle Uzodike, Rev Obinna Akukwe, Rev Celestine Obi among numerous others received the Apostolic counsel from the Port Harcourt based missionary evangelist, Rev Rosy Madugba and the prayer sessions during the two days were like no other. Two weeks after the annual Corpus Christi witnessed unprecedented turnout and excitement. The 2013 edition was celebrated with much pomp as though the King is just about to appear, in a manner never witnessed since the inception of the diocese. Some attributed it to the fact that it coincided with the church synod which ended the day before while others suspected unusual spiritual presence. Many participants including some priests and sisters actually wondered aloud at the level of excitement following this year's edition and concluded that something unusual is happening while many pondered the meaning. The answer is that God is preparing the Igbos of South East Nigeria for end time world harvest of souls. This end-time revival will criss-cross denominational boundaries |
