Celebrities / Emmy Collins To Uche Jumbo And Toke Makinwa by Chelcy(f): 2:05pm On Nov 30, 2013 |
'Style Is An Alien Word To Uche Jombo, Toke Makinwa Has Too Much Fakeness - Emmy Collins Check out what avant-garde and versatile designer Emmy Collins who is rapidly gaining a reputation for mocking celebrities' red carpet outfits wrote on his blog about Uche Jombo's oufit to Rukky Sanda's movie premiere and Toke Makinwa. This man is mean! What do you think? Uche Jumbo I guess the fashion police just arrested this lady outside the event venue and rummaged through that hair hoping to find any atom of style hidden there. They must have let her go when they saw a brick wall. The fashion olokpas must have felt so out of luck, hehe. Style is an alien word to this chic. However,I have been wowed by the most unlikely people at some point in my life so I am still waiting with bated breath for Uche to shut me up with her styling someday. I wouldn`t put any smart money on that happening any time soon though. Toke Makinwa The first time Toke found herself in hot pepper soup on this forum was during her obvious failed attempt at stuffing this monstrosity called a dress down our throats. However,she is back in trouble today not as a result of the outfit she had on but what she spewed out of her mouth in a recent interview. I have managed to purposefully boycott any news relating to Toke of late as I honestly don`t fathom why she has to be in the news. Well, I have mentioned unequivocally in the past that once you set out to bleach the beautifully skin you inherited from God (God created us in his own image) then you have proven beyond any reasonable doubt that you are insecure so Toke has since entered my black book as an insecure young lady. By saying that she acquired the British/ American accent during the JUST one year she spent in UK because she didn`t want to come across as a “SAVAGE” is further proof that this young lady needs counselling to build up her sense of self belief. Let me tell you a short story. Back in the 90`s , there used to be an American military base in the Dutch town of Zest located on the outskirts of Utrecht and near the town of Gouda. If you are a lover of cheese, then you must have heard of Gouda as Gouda cheese is amongst the best in the world; stinkingly yummy, lol.. Anyway, there was a nightclub called Pinocchio which was frequented by Black Americans from the base and of course Africans most especially Nigerians (Naija no dey carry last nah). Now, the major attraction to this club is the chics, YUP, chics. Any white chic who wanted to taste what a brother had, partied out there. The prevailing accent then was American so every Nigerian including those with tribal marks and those straight out of main market Onitsha made efforts to sound American and boy, the most disgusting sound I ever listened to in my life was to listen to these confused Nigerians trying to speak with an American accent just to get the chics. Me? I used my fine boyness, my nasty but beautiful afro mixed with my authentic accent (whatever that means lol ) to score a few nice chics. In fact I scored more chics than all the fake asses. And oh, did I forget to mention that even a few Somalians who just came straight off the boat and miswaka-ed into the club also tried to come off as Americans? Now, imagine the scene. A local Somalian faking American and genuinely thinking he pulled it off? I used to have an American buddy from the base and one day he said to me “why are my Nigerian brothers not proud of their accent. I hang with you because you keep it real,bro” Well, the moral of my short story is that fake accent doesn`t get you too far. People will always smell your fakeness from miles away. Savage my skinny ass. Fake accent, fake skin colour? Now, that is too much fakeness in one person,Tokstarr. |
Entertainment / Men N Women2 by Chelcy(f): 5:05am On Nov 29, 2013 |
Handwriting: Men: To their credit, men do not decorate their penmanship. They just chicken-scratch. Women: Women use scented, colored stationery and they dot the "i" with circles or hearts. Women use ridiculously large loops in the "b" and "g". It is a pain to read a note from a woman. Even when she's dumping you, she will put a smiley face at the end of the note. Groceries: Women: A woman makes a list of things she needs, then goes out to the store and buys those things. Men: A man waits till the only items left in his fridge are half a lime and a beer. Then he goes grocery shopping. He buys everything that looks good. By the time a man reaches the checkout counter, his cart is packed tighter than the Clampett's car on Beverly Hillbillies. Of course, this will not stop him from going to the express lane. Relationships: Women: When a relationship ends, a woman will cry and pour her heart out to her girlfriends, and she will write a poem titled "All Men Are Idiots". Then she will get on with her life. Men: A man has a little more trouble letting go. Six months after the break- up, at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, he will call and say, "I just wanted to let you know you ruined my life, and I'll never forgive you, and I hate you, and you're a total floozy. But I want you to know that there's always a chance for us." This is known as the "I Hate You / I Love You" drunken phone call, that 99% of all men have made at least once. There are community colleges that offer courses to help men get over this need. Sex: Women: They prefer 30-40 minutes of pre-intimacy. Men: They prefer 30-40 seconds of pre-intimacy. Men consider driving back to her place part of the pre-intimacy. Maturity: Women: They mature much faster than men. Most 17-year old females can function as adults. Men: Most 17-year old males are still trading baseball cards and giving each other wedgies after gym class. This is why high school romances rarely work out. Magazines: Men: Men's magazines often feature pictures of naked women. Men are turned on at the sight of a naked woman's body. Women: Women's magazines also feature pictures of naked women. This is because the female body is a beautiful work of art, while the male body is lumpy and hairy and should not be seen by the light of day. Most naked men elicit laughter from women. Bathrooms: Men: A man has six items in his bathroom -- a toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of Dial soap, and a towel from the Holiday Inn. Women: The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 437. A man cannot identify most of these items. Shoes: Women: When preparing for work, a woman will put on a wool suit, then slip on Reebok sneakers. She will carry her dress shoes in a plastic bag from Saks. When a woman gets to work, she will put on her dress shoes. Five minutes later, she will kick them off because her feet are under the desk. Men: A man will wear the same pair of shoes all day. Let's not talk about how many days he'll wear the same socks. 1 Like |

Men are like…..Bananas. The older they get, the less firm they are. Of course women don’t work as hard as men… They get it right the first time. What do you call a man that lost all of his intelligence? A widow. How can you tell if a man is lying? You can see his lips moving. Why do men need sports action replays 30 seconds after the event? Because they’ve forgotten what happened. What do you instantly know about a well-dressed man? His wife is good at picking out clothes. Why did God create man first? Because he needed a rough working model before creating the perfect specimen of the species. What does it mean when a man is in your bed gasping for breath and calling your name? You didn’t hold the pillow down long enough. Why do men like smart women? Opposites attract. What is the one thing that all men at singles bars have in common? They’re married. What is the difference between men and women? A woman wants one man to satisfy her every need. A man wants every woman to satisfy his one need. What’s the smartest thing a man can say? “My wife says….” Why do female black widow spiders kill the males after mating? To stop the snoring before it starts. Why does it take 100 million sperm to fertilize one egg? Because not one will stop and ask for directions. Men are like…..Vacations. They never seem to be long enough. Men are like…..Cement. After getting laid, they take a long time to get hard. Men are like…..Snowstorms. You never know when he’s coming, how many inches you’ll get or how long he will last. Men are like…..Lawn Mowers. If you’re not pushing one around, then you’re riding it. Why did god invent men? Because vibrators can’t mow the lawn. How many men does it take to screw in a light bulb? One … men will screw anything. What’s a man’s idea of pre-intimacy? A half hour of begging. An english professor wrote up on the board “woman without her man is nothing” and told his students to punctuate it. The males in the class wrote “Woman, without her man, is nothing.” The Females wrote “Woman! Without her, man is nothing.” “Men are like fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it’s our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d like to have dinner with.” There were three guys talking in the pub. Two of them are talking about the amount of control they have over their wives, while the third remains quiet. After a while one of the first two turns to the third and says, “Well, what about you, what sort of control do you have over your wife?” The third fellow says, “I’ll tell you. Just the other night my wife came to me on her hands and knees.” The first two guys were amazed. “What happened then?” they asked. “She said, ‘get out from under the bed and fight like a man’.” A man rubbed a lamp and a genie came out. The man asked to be stronger than any other man. He was given the strength to crush bolders. He asked for the worlds fastest sports car and a ferrari appeared in front of him. He then asked to be smarter than any other every man on the earth. He was turned into a woman. Why Men Are Like Computers: 10. They have a lot of data but are still clueless. 9. A better model is always just around the corner. 8. They look nice and shiny until you bring them home. 7. It is always necessary to have a backup. 6. They’ll do whatever you say if you push the right buttons. 5. The best part of having either one is the games you can play. 4. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on. 3. The lights are on but nobody’s home. 2. Big power surges knock them out for the night. 1. Size does matter. 1 Like 1 Share |
Education / ASUU Crisis::let's Bring In Governor Okorocha by Chelcy(f): 3:23am On Nov 29, 2013 |
“We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfil or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers”. Those were the words of the National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Mr. Michael Olukoya on Thursday September 26, 2013 while announcing his union’s 2 weeks ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve the ASUU crisis. The NUT was obviously not ready for a peace-maker role as some analysts would imagine. Rather, it came into the subject on the side of ASUU. This can be deduced from the union’s statement that the current ASUU strike was “nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing”. The government probably sensed this and hurriedly met with the teachers to plead with them not to complicate the subject. Interestingly, although the NUT’s body language at the meeting gave an impression that it was persuaded by the plea, the union has since restated that its ultimatum stays. Considering that any responsible societal institution is expected to seek solutions to a nation’s problem it is hard to immediately appreciate the present posture of the NUT. Some labour analysts are quick at drawing attention to the fact that a solidarity strike is acceptable in global unionism. This according to them would move the government to take ASUU much more seriously. It would indeed get the attention of the international community and as such, put the Federal Government on its toes. As if some other unions buy this principle of the power of democracy, the idea of solidarity action is gaining ground by the day on the ASUU issue. Already, 2 other powerful unions are warming up to join the strike. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) was the first to show concern. At the end of the union’s National Administrative Council meeting, held in Lagos last weekend, its President, Igwe Achese stated that his union was not happy at the crisis facing the public university system. It therefore threatened to stop distribution of petroleum products across the country if the Federal Government failed to implement the agreement reached with ASUU. Only last Thursday, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), gave the Federal Government seven days to resolve the ASUU strike or face a total shut down of electricity facilities in the country. The decision of the union was made known by its General Secretary, Mr. Joe Ajaero at a training workshop for labour leaders in the power sector in Enugu, The secretary was emphatic that the union could no longer sit back and watch the destruction of the future of Nigerian students who have remained at home for the past 3months on account of the ASUU strike. Thus it is now certain that dangerous dimensions are about to be introduced into the crisis making it obvious that it is time to call on well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and save the nation from disintegrating. It will be recalled that the National Assembly, especially its education committees, had in the past waded unsuccessfully into the crisis. The Vice President, Governor Gabriel Suswan of Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Minister of Labour had all similarly tried in vain. Of course, the matter is far beyond the capacity of the current supervising Minister of Education. It would in earnest be unwise to leave it with him having failed when he along with the former main Minister in the Ministry tackled the issue. Is he likely to do better now that he is alone; more so as his other crisis in Rivers State might take more of his time? At this point, it seems rational to bring in fresh hands to handle the subject. Here, we suggest the invitation of Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the Imo State Governor, who is fast becoming accepted as a man with a rescue mission orientation. Oh yes, the media has of recent become replete with wonderful stories of a complete transformation of Imo’s Education system. It is a man like Rochas who has made Education the biggest industry in his State that is needed right now. Perhaps because he is matching Governor Akpabio naira for naira in what looks like governance by publicity, some people tend to doubt the miracles of Rochas in Imo. The truth however is that even his political rivals marvel at his initiatives in the education sector. At the last count, Governor Okorocha has in his State ensured free education to the tertiary level; improved subvention of N252 million to Imo State University from N56 million, improved subvention of N98 million to Imo State Polytechnics’, Umuagwo from N45 million, construction of Imo College of Advanced Professional Studies [ICAPS], Young Scientist College and 305 European standard schools in the state. A few weeks back, the state government under his watch took delivery of 15 container loads of school uniforms, sandals, desks, books and other learning materials that have been freely distributed to school children under the free education programme. A short trip to Imo State would convince cynics that public schools there now have clean and beautiful environments where several modern facilities abound. Unlike ASUU members, school heads in Imo now have maintenance budget and their salaries are now regular. Over 70% of them have been promoted with their staff rooms well equipped and decorated. It will be hard for the NUT to get Imo teachers whose allowances are guaranteed to join its solidarity strike. For instance, they now get wardrobe allowance as well as end of year bonus. There is also the story that teachers are paid before other public servants in the state. As a result, the idea of part-time teaching and part-time-trading that is prevalent in many states is banished in Imo. The Nigerian nation therefore needs the help of Rochas Okorocha, the new ‘Awo’ of Imo education to reveal how he manages education as well as teachers. If this suggestion is followed, Rochas will no doubt encourage all our leaders to follow his own avowed principle of “never to play politics with education” |

Education / ASUU Members Adamant About Return-to-work Order...... by Chelcy(f): 1:09am On Nov 29, 2013 |
Some university lecturers on Thursday said that the federal government's directive on the reopening of universities, which also directed staff to resume by Dec. 4 or face sack, was a joke. They spoke in separate telephone interviews from Lagos. Lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), had on July 1 started a 'comprehensive, total and indefinite' strike in public universities across the country. The union members are agitating the non-implementation of some issues contained in an agreement it entered into with the Federal government in 2009. Mr Nyesom Wike, Supervising Minister of Education, however, earlier on Thursday, directed all Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to immediately reopen for academic and allied activities. He also directed the Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors to ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment for academic and allied activities. The minister said that any academic staff who failed to resume on or before Dec. 4, automatically ceased to be staff of the institutions. In his reaction to the directive, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, Chairman, University of Lagos branch of ASUU, said the development was strange and laughable. He said that this was so considering the fact that the union was yet to get back to the government, after their deliberations with President Goodluck Jonathan. “Our reaction is simple. Let us just wait for the seven days to come around. “What government has just done shows that they were not committed in the offer they made with the union that had the Trade Union Congress President and the Minister of Labour in attendance. “We are not going to fall to that blackmail. Now, which one is better, government acceding to our demands or issuing out threats. “Honestly, this whole thing ought have been easily resolved given the approach taken by President Jonathan but it is like we want to be taken for granted after all and it is unfair,' he said. Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, immediate past Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, simply described the development as “a glorified joke and laughable''. Oyewo noted that it was funny that one of the parties which had before now been holding dialogue, would try to intimidate the other . “I see this whole thing as a joke and I dare say it is not even worth my comments. We just keep our fingers crossed and watch. I still emphasise that such ultimatum is a display of insensitivity and a huge joke,' he said. Also commenting on the government directive, Prof. Sat Obiyan, Head of Department of Political Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said that the ultimatum was not the best approach to resolving the strike. He, however, said that the threat may achieve some success because some lecturers would resume for fear of losing their jobs but it would not end the crisis in the education sector. Obiyan said that it was unfortunate that the strike was allowed to linger for so long. “Nigerians are worried over the situation; the prolonged strike is not good for the education system in the country but the Federal Government approach now is not the best. “What is required is little understanding by both parties to agree on something and end the strike without aggravating it. “It is not a new thing for the Federal Government to threaten ASUU members with sack; it was done in 1996 by the late President Sani Abacha. “For the university system to work perfectly, you need all the personnel and not few lecturers on ground to teach,“ he said. Obiyan urged the Federal Government to have a rethink and implement the agreement reached with the union. He also urged ASUU to give the Presidency the benefit of doubt that the agreement will be implemented given the President Goodluck Jonathan's intervention which saw him leading the government delegation at the last negotiation meeting. Also, Dr Yinka Ajala, Head, Department of Geography, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife said that the threat would ignite more problems in the education system. Ajala said that threatening lecturers with sack should not be a weapon but for the Federal Government. He said that the ASUU executive was being careful with the agreement reached with the Federal Government before suspending the strike. “What ASUU is asking for is not too much, they want government to show some commitment with the agreement. “Government can only force few lecturers to resume but not all if the Vice-Chancellors open registers in the institutions. “The sack threat is a tactic that will not work; it has been used by the military in the past, so it is not new to us. “I do not think this is the way government should handle the strike, it will not solve the problem,“ he said. The Coordinator of Education Right Campaign (ERC), Mr Hassan Soweto, said that the ultimatum would only worsen the problem, noting that it was against the principle of public bargaining. “What ASUU wants is some level of commitment from the Federal Government before it will suspend the strike. “It is not right for the government to use force in a democracy,“ he said. Mr Agbomeji Ibrahim, a student of Lagos State University, Ojo urged the Federal Government not to be authoritative by giving lecturers one week to return to classes or face sack. Ibrahim, who is a student unionist, said that there was a better approach to resolve the issue rather than using a sack threat. 'In comradeship, we do not shift grounds due to threats. 'President Goodluck Jonathan is already on the verge of settling with union, so the present decision might slow down the process of the resolution,' he said. Ibrahim urged the Federal Government to be more sensitive its decision and said that ASUU should also have a rethink as the strike was old enough to be called off. ''The Federal Government must be careful, logical and realistic its decision, because of the importance of the sector. ''Both the Government and ASUU need to accommodate each other on the negotiation table because both parties cannot get all their demands and must be ready to shift grounds, 'Ibrahim said. President Jonathan had personally led the Federal Government negotiation team at the last meeting between both parties where some agreements were made and the ASUU was to return to the government after consulting with its members. |

The convoy was intimidating, people scampered for safety, other road users veered off the road in what looked like a scene in Hollywood movies, If you thought it was a war scene, you were wrong! Because making use of that narrow way that day was not a military head of state but an un-elected wife of a political office holder! In a story that circulated on the internet recently, one Ola Adeosun narrated how he became victim of the overzealous security officials of the governor of a South-West state just because he happened to share the road while the governor’s convoy at that time. More worrisome was his allegation that the show of brutality and naked force was supervised by a senior police officer. According to him, for daring to challenge the security officials on why his vehicle was hit, he was beaten black and blue, dragged on the floor and hurled into a police truck where he was taken to the police station. This is one of such executive lawlessness that has become part of our political space. Alas, the whole nation was to be put in a mourning mood days later when a vehicle in the convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, crashed into a Toyota Hiace bus conveying an erstwhile President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Festus Iyayi, to the proposed ASUU NEC Meeting in Kano somewhere along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway killing him on the spot while two other ASUU chiefs were critically injured. According to the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Olatunde Motajo, the recklessness of the governor’s convoy drivers led to the fatal accident that claimed Iyayi’s life. According to him, the last vehicle in the convoy of the governor made ‘’wrongful overtaking’’ thereby ramming into the bus conveying the ASUU chiefs. Intimidation of the Nigerian citizenry by the political class as well as influential public figures when making use of our roads is fast becoming a shame that we should be worried about. Ours is about the only country in a democratic setting where political office holders not only use public funds to acquire excessive security vehicles but also use same to oppress its citizenry. The sight of drivers in the convoy of politicians, escorts, bank officials and the “fat cats” in the society breaking traffic rules is a regular occurrence that not only elicits anger from the citizenry but also causes accidents that claim lives. In a bid to impress their masters, overzealous “monsters” in uniforms intimidate other road users whenever they make use of the roads. They flagrantly abuse the rights of other road users, forcing other drivers off the road while those who have the guts to argue with them over their right to also use the road are molested and physically abused. It is important for us to remind ourselves that this is a democratic setting where the leaders have an obligation to serve the people. The government has a sacred duty to ensure the security and welfare of the citizenry (the very essence of government), it is thus unthinkable that these same people who should be the ones protecting us are sending a lot of us to our graves prematurely Just when one thought Iyayi’s case would be a call for caution for political office holders, another tragedy happened two weeks ago, less than 24 hours after the accident that claimed Iyayl’s life. According to The PUNCH, a convoy of seven vehicles consisting of three escort vans containing policemen caused an accident in Lagos. It was reported that the convoy connected the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway recklessly without checking for oncoming vehicles, and unfortunately a Tipper moving on a high speed in a bid to avoid the convoy swerved off the road and lost control, killing two persons and injuring several others. The recklessness of drivers attached to political office holders have caused untold hardship and pain to many families. The recklessness of an individual has caused the indefinite suspension of the National Executive Council meeting of ASUU, where votes to end the over four months strike by the university lecturers was expected to have been taken, thus shattering the hopes of millions of Nigerians who hoped that the industrial action would be suspended last week. Public officials should as a matter of urgency reduce the long list of vehicles in their convoys; it is totally unnecessary. Apart from the fact that their maintenance amounts to a waste of taxpayers money, it is a show of intimidation on hapless citizens who service these vehicles with their taxes. Political office holders and all those who are entitled to the use of escorts should curb the excesses of their security details, after all, the drivers and security escorts do all these to impress them. It should be noted that the drivers of these vehicles are not immune to prosecution and so the traffic management and enforcement agencies should step up their job and bring erring drivers to book. Also, we should strengthen our traffic laws such that any offender, no matter how highly placed is prosecuted duly. All this will put recalcitrant drivers in check and ensure that sanity returns to our roads. In as much as the political office holders do nor repair our roads and make them motorable enough, then we should all “enjoy” the hold-up and the attendant hardship, after all, none of us has two heads. This carnage in the name of convoys must stop and the time to end it is now! Prof. Iyayi will always be remembered for his doggedness, activism and the struggle for a Nigeria that works. He has left an indelible imprint in the sands of time and his legacies will continue to live on. |
Education / Osun State Principal Discharged From Hospital..denies Removing Student's Hijab! by Chelcy(f): 2:10am On Nov 28, 2013 |
The Principal of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Osun State, Mr. Layi Oguntola, who was beaten up by some Muslim youths in his office on Monday for allegedly sending away an hijab- wearing pupil, has been discharged from the hospital. Oguntola had been on admission at the Baptist Medical Centre since Monday when the youths that stormed the school descended on him till Wednesday when he left the hospital. The principal, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, denied removing hijab from the head of Romoke, the female student at the centre of the crisis. He said, “The girl did not wear any hijab nor put any hijab in her bag. What she put in her bag is not even my concern except the content is harmful. I did not search her bag; I didn’t send her away from school. “She was unruly and I caned her. I gave her a punishment to serve but to my surprise, while I was still there she ignored me and was demanding for doughnut from two of her friends. “I saw this as disrespect and I caned her. This happened on Wednesday, November 20. The following day her mother came to my office and lambasted me. She promised to cause trouble in the school. “On Monday, about 250 Muslims youths came to the school and headed straight to my office. They attacked me and turned my office upside down. I was admitted in the hospital. I have been discharged; I am okay partially.” Meanwhile, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salaam, has condemned the attack on the principal. The Speaker, in a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr. Goke Butika, said, “The issue has nothing to do with the school reclassification exercise, but improper way of settling scores with the leadership of the school by some aggrieved persons. “We should be mindful of enemies of progress who only want to subvert the school reclassification exercise that has started yielding positive result by attributing personal scores between some aggrieved persons and the leadership of the school to the exercise.” |

Education / ASUU!!!!!federal Government!!!!!students!!! by Chelcy(f): 7:21am On Nov 27, 2013 |
The Committee of Pro-chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, on Tuesday, unanimously ordered immediate re-opening of universities across the country. The communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Professor Kimse Okoko, was made available to newsmen late Tuesday in Abuja. The communiqué was issued at the end of the committee meeting to discuss the protracted strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues affecting the Nigerian university system. The communiqué stated that the decision to re-open the universities was unanimously agreed by all pro- chancellors in the overall interest of all concerned. The pro-chancellors, in the communique, directed all vice chancellors to comply with the committee decision. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the decision of the pro-chancellors was predicated on the earlier referendum held by various chapters of ASUU that voted 60-40 in favour of suspension of the over four months old strike. They expressed dismay that all efforts to resolve the crisis, including the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, has failed. The communiqué recognised “all effort by Federal Government to address the major issues involved in the strike action including the bold and the supportive intervention by Mr President.” It also stated that the committee noted “with satisfaction the outcome of the referendum conducted in all branches of ASUU nationwide which voted 60-40 in favour of the suspension of the ongoing strike by ASUU.” The pro-chancellors called for the understanding of ASUU and indeed all staff of the various universities in Nigeria. This order is coming on the heels of polarisation that has already crept into the ASUU, following the meeting they had with President Goodluck Jonathan penultimate week. Nigerians were amazed that the emergency National Executive Council meeting, held in Kaduna last weekend, came out with fresh conditions for suspension of strike after it was rumoured that a deal was struck with President Jonathan. ASUU has been on strike since July 1 and the NEC meeting was to deliberate on the resolutions of various chapters of ASUU on whether the strike should be suspended or not based on the offers by the government. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the pro- chancellors were aggrieved that even when majority of the members of ASUU want the strike called off, few elements in the union have refused to yield to the popular desire of the members. Meanwhile, the crisis rocking the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of ASUU, over its continued participation in the ongoing strike action by the union’s national body, worsened on Tuesday as the two factions in the crisis openly traded insults. The congress, called on Monday, saw a sharp division in the chapter with a faction favouring a pull-out from the strike action, giving a week ultimatum to open the institution. The faction also promised undisclosed further actions if the ultimatum was not met, after it held a separate congress following the disruption of the earlier one. |
