Anti-Shettima forces angry as Tinubu defends running mate The unveiling of the vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Kashim Shettima, was on Wednesday greeted by anger as hundreds of demonstrators stormed the APC secretariat in Abuja to register their grievances over the decision. The protest took place at about the same time the former Borno state governor was being presented to party leaders by the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Defending his selection of Shettima, Tinubu said, “Senator Kashim Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all important electoral victory, but also step into the shoes of the Vice-President. As a man with the talent, maturity, strength, charater and patriotism, he has my implicit confidence and faith.” Governors, aspirants and delegates of South East extraction were conspicuously missing at the event. Protesters who came to the APC secretariat in six luxury buses were led by some party members under the aegis of APC Hausa-Fulani Youth Forum. They chanted songs and wielded various banners with the inscriptions, ‘A cry for justice’, ‘Drop Shettima and ‘Give slots to our Christian brothers’, ‘Discrimination and mutual suspicion in our country’ and so on. Speaking to one of our correspondents, the convener of the forum, Abdullahi Mohamadu declared that they would not stop protesting until the party do the right thing. In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and made available to The PUNCH, Mohammadu stated that they saw the selection of Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected immediately by the leadership of the party. The petition read in part, ‘’As concerned stakeholders of the APC and those who constitute the voting strength of our party, we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without recourse to its implication on the electoral chances of the party and the attendant uproar such a decision could bring about in the country. Picking another Muslim from the north-eastern part of the country as running mate is politically and morally indefensible.’’ With its choice of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union says the ruling party has already lost 2.2m votes from the Southern part of Kaduna in the 2023 poll. Spokesman for SOKAPU, Luka Binniyat, condemned the APC’s decision and predicted that the 2023 presidential contest would be between the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party, Peter Obi. He said, “The selection of Shettima is an assured, well packaged and comfortable defeat of the APC in the presidential election come 2023, from what I can predict for the Southern Kaduna voting population of about 2.2 million.’’ The Middle Belt Forum lambasted Tinubu for saying that picking Shettima as his vice-presidential candidate would guarantee him victory in 2023. Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday, the MBF National President, Dr Bitrus Pogu, urged the APC presidential candidate to wait and see the results of the 2023 elections. Candidlady:With all due respect..... When you call men please be specific, because not every man is an idiot or a nuisance, likewise when you come to an evil act of a wicked woman you won't like to be referred to as one of them, some people are trained and got manners, not referring to a complete street brainless scallywag as Men, all men aren't the same vice versa to the opposite gender, the world is filled with wicked ones and is comprised with both Men and Women, not one sudden wicked art of an idiot will now bring ruins to the innocent beings, cause even without the men on earth there'll still be more wickedness amongst the women, we should think like literates which we are and not illiterates, please. Anambra: Robbers kill undergraduate, family blames strike, FG A 23-year-old student of History and International Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Chiamaka Okeke, has been stabbed to death by robbers. The incident happened at a Shawarma spot in Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State, where the deceased was said to be working temporarily as a result of the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. It was gathered that the incident happened on July 10. Narrating the incident to our correspondent on Monday, the brother of the deceased, who identified himself as Samuel Okeke, blamed the unfortunate death of his sister on ASUU strike and the Federal Government. Okeke, also a student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, said Chiamaka, who had been at home because of the ASUU strike, decided to get a job at a Shawarma spot, located around Ezi Alias Junction, Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra. He said the deceased decided to get the temporary job in her bid to lessen financial burdens on their parents as well as get engaged in activity rather than staying idle. According to him, on the said date, at around 9:30pm, when the deceased and other employees were locking the shop, they were attacked by a gang of robbers who asked her to surrender her phone. Related News ASUU: NLC plans national protest, police demand notification Treat ASUU strike as national emergency – Olanipekun Strike: Join protest, Sowore urges students, backs NLC He said, “An eyewitness told us that the robbers requested for Chiamaka’s handset, but she had told them that she was not with a phone but they went ahead to drag her bag and stabbed her multiple times on the stomach and chest. “She didn’t even resist them or argue with them. They just killed my sister for nothing. She was just trying to make ends meet because of this ASUU palaver. “I will never forgive ASUU and the Federal Government for this! My sister did not deserve to die. How much was the salary that she was even paid? How long has she even worked there? My sister was just killed because of the ineptitude and uncaring country we live in.” When contacted on the matter, the state Police Spokesman, Toochukwu Ikenga, said the information was not brought before the police. Ikenga, therefore, asked the family members of the deceased to come forward and provide more information for proper investigation. “Please, let him come forward to provide us with more information for proper investigation. You can give him my telephone number,” Ikenga added. |

Police arrest eight suspected cultists over attack on Tinubu’s convoy in Lagos The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested eight persons in connection with the attack on the convoy of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, last month in Lagos. Tinubu, who returned to Lagos on Sunday, June 19, 2022, after emerging as his party’s flag bearer in the presidential primaries that took place at the Eagles Square, Abuja, had visited the palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu same day. However, on his way out, some armed hoodlums attacked his convoy, shattering the windows of the press corps bus with stones and machetes and injured some journalists in the process. Parading the suspects before journalists, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Hauwa Idris-Adamu, disclosed that the suspects confessed to being members of different confraternities. She said that the zone had launched a manhunt for the sponsor of the attack. According to her, ” The suspects are cultists. They belong to Aiye, Eiye, Oju Akpaco and Esuru boys confraternities. They have mentioned the name of the sponsor of the attack, who is at large. “Investigations are still ongoing and we will get back to the press as soon as we have the principal suspect in our net”. In another development, the Zone’s Monitoring Unit has arrested seven suspected members of a syndicate that broke into Jus Partners Cosmopolitan Limited, a telecommunication company in Yaba area of Lagos, on June 20, 2022. The suspects who scaled the fence, tied the private guards on duty and carted away 16 drums of 96 Core Starlite Optic cables, estimated at N80 million. Explaining how the suspects were arrested in different areas of the State, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, said, when the information reached the AIG, Bode Adeleke, he directed the zone’s monitoring unit headed by CSP Uba Adams to uncover the cabal. The Unit as gathered swung into action and deployed its technical and Intelligence-based investigation. A team of covert detectives reportedly accompanied the complainant to Alaba International market and directed the company’s representative who pretended to be a customer, to identify the stolen cable from the section of cable stores. Some of the cables were said to have been found in one of the shops. Police sources hinted that “Photographs of the exact cable were shown and to show commitment, the company was directed to make a down payment of N500,000 before the company’s representative could be taken to the warehouse, where he could get the needed quantity. A deal that struck and money was remitted into the account of one Felix Onyema, who turned out to be the principal suspect. The cables were traced to Onyema’s residence at Sibiri area of the State. Tinubu has nothing new to offer Nigerians – Ex-minister A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State and former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Nduese Essien, has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 presidential election, Bola Tinubu, has nothing new to offer after his party could not fulfill its promises to the country. He said Tinubu’s promise that his administration will make the Naira at par with the US Dollar is a mere campaign gimmick which cannot fly, adding that APC flag bearer has no such magic wand to turn the Naira around to equate in value with the Dollar. Essien said, “Tinubu made this kind of promise in 2015 when he was campaigning for Muhammadu Buhari, and seven years down the line, he couldn’t show the president how to appreciate the Naira. “Why then should anybody with knowledge of how the global economy works, believe him? “That’s how it started in 2014, leading to the opposition against President Goodluck Jonathan on how the Naira will be at par with the USA Dollar if Buhari is voted to power”, Chief Essien said, adding that Tinubu’s claim is unrealistic, given the fact that he may likely follow the economic path of Buhari, if voted into power. The term house of Representatives member, who chaired the South South caucus of the National Assembly from 1999 to 2003 castigated the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, in which Tinubu is co-traveller, for the abysmal depreciation of the Naira from where they met it at 150 to present day value of 610 to a dollar. “Why has Tinubu failed to assist President Buhari in arresting the steady fall of the Naira against other international currencies but waiting until he becomes President in 2023 before he miraculously intervened?” Essien queried. He added, “International currencies are not manipulated the way Bola Tinubu surreptitiously took the Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited Headquarters to Lagos away from its area of operations to the detriment of the Oil Producing Areas and has continued to sustain its maintenance there despite all the protests from the rest of the country and in keeping with international best practice. “Tinubu cannot be trusted because as the leader of the All Progressive Congress, the party has failed the country in all its campaign promises, he has nothing new to offer the nation.” Chief Essien called on Nigerians of voting age to make use of the extension given by INEC on registration for PVC, to be part of the leadership recruitment process. |

2023: Kwankwaso satisfied with Tinubu-Shettima combination Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Monday, expressed satisfaction with the choice of Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2023 presidential race. The presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, nominated the ex-Borno governor, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate. The 55-year-old banker-turned-politician, who is the senator representing Borno Central District, was described by Kwankwaso as a good man during an interview with Arise News monitored on Sunday by our correspondent. “Shettima was my colleague as a governor during my second term. He’s a gentleman, he’s a good man. I wish him well. “I’m so happy with that combination; my only worry is the platform ( the APC). This platform…I don’t know. “Bola Tinubu is a strategist. I had reasons to sit with him an uncountable number of times from 1992 till date. “I wish I will see him to ask what he’ll do differently from what the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari is doing today. That is my serious concern for him”, he said. Kwankwaso, 65, who is the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, was also a former Defence Minister and former Senator, representing Kano Central Senatorial District from June 2015 to June 2019.

Nothing bad must happen to Kanu in prison – IPOB The Indigenous People of Biafra has said it is not oblivious of an alleged plot to attack its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Kuje Prison, by men of the Department of States Services. This was as the group blamed the United Kingdom for the perpetual incarceration of the IPOB leader, saying the aim was to scuttle the actualisation for the liberation of Biafra. The IPOB’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Sunday. The group said it was worried by the spates of jailbreaks in the country under the watch of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), saying the ugly trends signposted a failed nation. The group claimed the information was revealed by its Intelligence arm, the M-Branch. The statement partly read, “We, the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, under the command and leadership of our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to reiterate our earlier emphasis over intended make-believe plan to attack the DSS facility in Abuja by already drawn up stunt actors (the DSS agents) at the very location where our leader, Mazi Nnamdi, is incarcerated having successfully tested such plans with Kuje Prisons, without consequences. “The plan was hatched by the Nigerian Government with strategic and tactical input of the UK Government. The reason for the UK and Nigeria alliance in such cowardice and evil plan is due to their disdain for allowing Indigenous People across the world to enjoy freedom such as the British enjoys Brexit from the European Union. “This alliance perceives Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a stumbling block for their modern day oppressive tendencies and, therefore, wants him dead, having tried several unsuccessful attempts in Afaraukwu, London, USA, Kenya and even in Abuja for which Chukwu Okike Abiama had always proven himself. The IPOB intelligence unit, the M. Branch, intercepted this purported plan by Britain and Nigeria to stop Biafra agitation and freedom from Nigeria, and Nigeria and its allies have decided to replicate what they did in 1967-1970 and still on the way to do it again against the innocent citizens of Biafra. The world should take note. “The world should take note because if anything untoward happens to our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu…in the DSS custody, nobody should blame IPOB for inevitable and uncontrollable boundless calamitous consequences that would befall anyone. Know it that your silence hardens our conscience towards the pursuit of this great nation called Biafra. IPOB needs unconditional release of our leader because there is no prison in the South that is safe for him. Therefore, we still need him released unconditionally to avoid dangerous terms IPOB may take against Nigeria.” It added, “There are many jailbreaks in Nigeria since Buhari and his APC party took over power and nothing was done…the number of prison breaks was so alarming…(that) no country in the world experienced the kind of jail breaks in history. “(Records of) jailbreaks (so far) are, 1) September 3, 2015, in Sokoto Remand Home…13 inmates escaped; 2) October, 2017, Enugu Maximum Prison, 2 inmates escaped; 3) December 27, 2017, Ikot Ekpene Prison attacked, 47 inmates escaped; 4) June 4, 2018, Minna Maximum Security Prison, 240 inmates escaped; 5) October 19, 2020, Oko Prison in Edo attacked and many escaped; 6) October 21, 2020, Benin Prison break, 1,993 inmates escaped from the two facilities; 7) October 22, 2020, Okitipupa Prison break, 58 inmates released; April 4, 2021, Owerri prison break, 1,844 inmates escaped; 9) September 13, 2021, Kabba prison break, Kogi, 240 inmates freed; 10) October 22, 2021, Abolongo Prison, Oyo, 837 inmates escaped; 11) July 19, 2021, Jos Maximum Security Prison attacked and inmates escaped; 12) November 28, 2021 – Jos Medium Security Prison attacked, 262 inmates released, 10 killed; 13) Jan 2, 2022, Mandala Prison Ilorin, three inmates escape 14) May 13, 2022 – Agbor Prison, Delta State, fence collapsed, three inmates escaped; 15) July 4, 2022, Kuje Prison, Abuja, attacked, 856 escaped.“All these prison breaks and Buhari and his government never found out the reasons (for the breaks) or brought the attackers or perpetrators to face the law. Therefore, we want them to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally because his life in the DSS custody is not safe and they will attack there and blame it on bandits and terrorists. “We urge the British Government to jettison pretence and direct the Nigerian Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally or send him back to the UK where he lives, or for him to return to Amaechi Mbazuruike or Professor George Obiozor, for his safety.”

How I faked kidnap to get money from my parents — Suspect A 29-year-old fake kidnap suspect, Segun Mafimidowo, on Thursday confessed that he faked his alleged kidnap in order to get money from his parents. Mafimidowo said this during the parade of 42 suspected criminals at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta. He said that he connived with some of his friends to demand a sum of N8 million ransom from his parents under the pretence that he had been kidnapped by some gunmen in the Sagamu area of the state. Parading the suspects, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, Mafimidowo, also sent pictures of where he was tied on both hands to his parents. “The purported abductors later sent an account number of one Ogbu Abraham to which he directed the parents to pay the ransom. But the anti-kidnapping section of the command embarked on a technical-based investigation which led to where Segun Mafimidowo and his so-called abductors, who are all his friends were hibernating.” While speaking during the parade, Mafimidowo said, “I wanted to get some money from my parents that was why I faked my abduction. “I sought help from my friends who agreed to help me act as abductors. I regret my action.” Meanwhile, the police command paraded the other suspected criminals who had been terrorising the state for various crimes, such as cult clashes, rape, murder, and kidnapping among others. Oyeyemi during the parade said the suspects were arrested at different locations such as Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode axis of the state for cultism, murder, kidnapping and rapping. He disclosed that his men arrested 42 suspects between April and June with various exhibits such as three locally made single barrel guns; one locally made double barrel gun; five live cartridges; four classes; 2 scissors and an axe. Oyeyemi said the arrests of the suspects were part of the command’s efforts at suppressing the menace of cultism and other vices across the state, particularly cult clashes in some parts of the state. https://punchng.com/how-i-faked-kidnap-to-get-money-from-my-parents-suspect/?amp |
Yoruba group plans to refile suit against constitution The Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, led by Prof Banji Akintoye, said the suit which the group instituted to challenge the validity of the 1999 Constitution would be withdrawn and re-filed at the Abuja Division of Federal High Court in two weeks. Akintoye, in a statement by his Communication Manager, Mr Maxwell Adeleye, said the decision to withdraw the suit was to achieve a better result. He said the action of the group was in line with the new practice direction since the Attorney General of the Federation resides in the Federal Capital Territory. The statement read in part, “The lead counsel representing us in the case, Mr Tolu Babaleye, has advised that plaintiffs should withdraw the suits in order to consolidate the matter and re-file it at the Abuja division of the Federal High Court because the major prayer, which is the invalidation of the 1999 Constitution, can only be heard at the Abuja division in line with the ruling of Ado-Ekiti division of the court on appropriate forum. “After the ruling on the matter in Ado-Ekiti Federal High Court, our counsel and other senior advocates advised that as ruled by the judge in Ekiti, what the plaintiffs in Ekiti and Osun states are praying for are matters that affect the whole Nigerian federation. “The plaintiffs want the 1999 constitution invalidated because its making is against the spirit of natural justice and fairness and that the judge in Federal High Court in Ekiti State ruled that the appropriate place to institute the matter is the Abuja division, and not in Ekiti.”

Buhari warns new ministers against corruption The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, warned that any of the seven newly inaugurated ministers “caught in corrupt practices would face the full wrath of the law”. This was as he urged them to eschew corruption saying public officers must be above board. According to a statement signed on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President issued the warning at the swearing-in ceremony, which preceded the virtual Federal Executive Council meeting at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa. The newly appointed ministers and their portfolios are: Ikechukwu Ikoh (Minister of State, Science and Technology); Umana Umana (Minister of Niger Delta Affairs); Udi Odum (Minister of State, Environment); Ademola Adegoroye (Minister of State, Transport); Umar El-Yakub (Minister of State, Works and Housing); Goodluck Opiah (Minister of State, Education) and Nkama Ekumankama (Minister of State, Health.) Speaking to the new cabinet members, Buhari called for collaboration with their older colleagues and announced the reassignment of portfolios in his cabinet, saying the new redeployment is aimed at reinvigorating certain sectors where the government desires to accomplish improved results. He said, ‘‘I begin this address by welcoming on board, all newly sworn-in members of the Federal Executive Council. I also congratulate you because the process that you all passed through to reach this stage has been rigorous and meticulous. ‘‘I, therefore, urge you to consider your emergence out of millions of equally qualified Nigerians within the purview of selection from your State, as a call to duty that imposes the obligation to serve the nation diligently and presents to you the unique opportunity to work hard in service to the Government and the country. ‘‘This administration has been in the saddle since 2015 and is now on the home stretch of its second term, as the nation prepares for the 2023 general elections. All through, it has vigorously pursued the three main electoral objectives namely: Securing the nation; Diversifying & growing the economy as well as fighting corruption. ‘‘You must resist bad counsel, resist temptation and be circumspect in your utterances and conduct. You must totally eschew corruption and be above board because if caught there will be no sacred cows.” He further asked the newly appointed ministers to await further communication on their appropriate Ministerial Mandates from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. ‘‘You are all coming on-board at this time with new energy, ideas, experiences and vigour, to join the existing team so that the implementation of policies, programs and projects associated with these electoral objectives would be escalated and accelerated. ‘‘There is still so much to be done for our country in the areas of infrastructure development, energy, access to finance, access to justice, technology and innovation, trade, agriculture, education and security. The list is inexhaustible,’’ he said. The President also urged the new ministers to study their sectors, take wise counsel, reach out to key stakeholders, consult and collaborate with older cabinet colleagues and focus on driving key programs already initiated by the regime. He charged them to “be loyal to your President and your country.’’ At the meeting, Buhari re-assigned at least four ministers to new portfolios. They include: Senator Adeleke Mamora, Minister of Science and Technology (formerly Minister of State, Health); Mu’azu Sambo, Minister of Transportation (formerly Minister of State, Works and Housing); Sharon Ikeazor, Minister of State, Niger Delta (formerly Minister of State, Environment) and Sen. Gbemisola Saraki, Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development (formerly Minister of State, Transportation).
