Abducted Ondo travellers regain freedom after N12m ransom kidnapped by some gunmen in Ayere in Kogi State have been released. It was gathered that the victims who were traveling from Abuja coming for a birthday ceremony in their hometown in Ondo State were kidnapped along Ayere-Kabba Road in Kogi State last week. A source however disclosed that the victims regained their freedom after the payment of N12 million ransom. “Their families paid N12million ransom to secure the safe release of the abductees after series of negotiations,” the source stated. When contacted about the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, however, claimed oblivious of the incident. “I am not aware of such incident, it did not happen in our jurisdiction,” the PPRO said.

FG’s mishandling of lingering ASUU strike ALMOST five months into the strike by university lecturers, there is little hope in sight that studies will resume as the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities sing discordant tunes. A pronouncement by the Labour and Productivity Minister, Chris Ngige, that the strike would soon be called off following negotiations, was promptly countered by the union, while other reports claimed that the main sticking point now centres on the electronic payment platform that would be appropriate for academics. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his ministers should do everything possible to ensure that federal universities reopen without further delay. That the strike has lingered for so long, resulting in the loss of a semester and possibly an entire academic year, demonstrates the cavalier attitude of the Buhari regime towards education. This is patently unfair to the students and their parents and guardians. That a government, in this modern age, could allow its universities to remain shut, paralysing academic activities for so long, is manifestly indefensible. The Federal Government should purge itself of its callous indifference and return to the negotiation table with renewed vigour to end the strike immediately at whatever the cost. The ASUU strike arises primarily from the failure of successive governments to honour agreements. Henceforth, the government must show fidelity to its agreements with ASUU and other unions. Government is a continuity, and agreements sealed by previous administrations are binding on its successors; at best, they can only be renegotiated. The FG-ASUU agreement/Memorandum of Understanding has gone beyond that. After so many strikes, pacts, and defaults since it was first signed in 2009 and renegotiated in 2013, implementation is the only viable option today. As the government mismanages the dispute, the entire public tertiary education system is on the verge of collapse, with other major academic unions across the public tertiary education system also staging strikes and making threatening demands. After its 21-day ultimatum elapsed with no concrete action from the government, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union days ago began a fresh four-week nationwide strike, while the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics only recently suspended its two-week strike. Though it said the government had met four of its nine demands, ASUP’s executives have scheduled a meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State, next week to decide whether to resume their strike. Non-academic staff unions are also flexing their muscles. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and Ngige have serially demonstrated their incompetence; Buhari should drop them. Ngige is abrasive, while Adamu, like Buhari, is aloof and detached from the ugly reality and damaging impact of a collapsing national tertiary education sector. Both men are round pegs in square holes, unsuitable for the challenges thrown up. Criticised for so long, ASUU has now won support for its cause from students, parents/guardians, and the public. Its position has merit. The revitalisation of the universities and improved welfare for lecturers are legitimate and should be treated as such. But the reluctance to source the funds to pay the promised revitalisation fund of N200 billion per annum is wrong. The consequence is evident in the poorly equipped laboratories, dilapidated lecture halls lacking teaching aids and ramshackle hostels — mostly having no usable toilet facilities and functional bathrooms and often forcing students in school hostels to bathe outside. Had government been faithful to this pact, the burden would have long since been discharged. The government should avail itself of the NEEDS Assessment in the Nigerian Education Sector report that formed the basis for the 2009 agreement to confront the level of decadence. To meet the annual N200 billion pledge, there should be special legislative budgetary appropriation incorporated into the annual national budgets. It is a matter of priority: the government and the National Assembly regularly rush finance bills through for security spending. The controversial service-wide vote provision specifically for “unforeseen situations” that was averaging N500 billion each year poses no problem for them to authorise either. About N758 billion was budgeted for this in 2021 and a humongous N2.4 trillion in 2022. Part of this should be channelled to the education sector to salvage it. Education is key to development, science and technology. The World Bank says, “Tertiary education is instrumental in fostering growth, reducing poverty, and boosting shared prosperity. A highly skilled workforce, with lifelong access to a solid post-secondary education, is a prerequisite for innovation and growth.” Education is the bedrock of success in today’s knowledge-driven global economy; therefore, everything should be done to revive it. Similarly, ASUU’s demand for the earned allowances of its members is legitimate. Its insistence on using the University Transparency and Accountability Solution pay platform, and its identification of flaws and subsequent rejection of the government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, initially dismissed by many, including by this newspaper, has been found to have merit. Cumulatively, since 1999, the public university system has lost about 1,400 days, or about three years and eight months, due to strikes. This corresponds roughly to the four-year duration of most undergraduate courses. This puts students in public universities at a disadvantage through no fault of theirs, while their mates in private universities complete their programmes on schedule. It is the children of average Nigerians and the underprivileged, who are unable to afford the fees in private universities that bear the brunt of these frequent strikes. All stakeholders should therefore unite to influence the immediate resumption of academic activities. Nigerians should overcome their culture of silence and complacency. They should employ all available legal and peaceful means to demand accountability and good governance from public office holders and draw the attention to the government’s many egregious failings, including in the education sector. The task of salvaging the public tertiary education sector is not for ASUU, ASUP or COEASU alone, the central labour unions should weigh in dispassionately. Beyond ASUU’s demand, there is an urgent need for increased funding for education by all tiers of government.

2023: Forget Peter Obi, Join Us To Become ‘Mr President’ – APC Begs Kwankwaso The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to return to the party he helped build. Speaking with reporters on Sunday in Abuja, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, asked Kwankwaso to return to a party he contributed immensely to its development. According to the APC spokesperson, the former Kano governor knows much about the ruling party’s formation. While telling Kwankwaso not to be deceived by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his ‘Obidient’ movement, which he says exists only on social media, Ajaka warned the former Kano to retrace his step before it is too late. Stressing that winning two states is not enough to make him ‘Mr. President’, the ruling party spokesperson, said a return to the APC is Kwankwaso’s best way of becoming president. “That is why I said it’s not too late for him to return to the APC. That’s where he naturally belongs and has an assurance of becoming a president one day, and not his current sectional NNPP. “Although some people might be deceiving him by calling him Mr. President already but just one or two states in the North-west cannot make him a president. ‘Elections Are Not Won On The Internet’ – Soludo Shades Peter Obi Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has mocked the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, over his ambition to be the next President in 2023. Soludo asked the former Anambra Governor to stop dreaming of succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, stressing that elections are not won on the internet. The governor described politicians who left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to other parties to win the 2023 general elections in the state under new parties as jokers. Soludo stated this at the weekend with APGA members at the Governor’s Lodge, Awka South Local Government Area of the state. The governor also mocked the former National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, for leaving the party to realize his Senatorial ambition. Soludo boasted that APGA remained the most formidable party in the state He said: “It is sad that the people that left had to leave, why would one leave a party he had laboured to build? It is not good to labour in vain. “However, they are not contesting elections. The election in Anambra is between APGA and other political parties. APGA remains the third in Nigeria as the country inches closer to the 2023 general elections. “Elections are not done on WhatsApp or the Internet. You have to be on ground. APGA is on ground here and everywhere. POLITICS2023: Tinubu Narrates How He Paid For People’s WAEC Fee Amidst Certificate Scandal The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu on Sunday revealed how he consulted the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on paying some people’s West African Examination Council fees. According to Tinubu, the lawmaker encouraged him to help the poor and pay for their examination fee. Tinubu stated this on Sunday during the celebration of Gbajabiamila’s 60 birthday in Abuja. This is coming days after Tinubu told the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that his school certificates were stolen by unknown persons during the military rule. Tinubu in a document released on Friday left columns for his primary and secondary education unmarked. The former Governor of Lagos State while speaking at the birthday celebration said, “As a Minority Leader, he (Gbajabiamila) consulted widely and he’s always there to see the thinking of opposition that we must bring a revolution to the House to be able to beat the PDP. And then, he will brainstorm for any length of time about political strategy. “When he was challenged for the position of the speaker, I think after our merger, he worked with me tirelessly. Femi is a workaholic. The problem of failure stared him in the face. He lost the election to become the Speaker. “I was close to tears. Stamping my foot to the ground I said ‘we will win again. Femi keeps up. Pick yourself up.’ I am very proud of you that you did, you didn’t give up. You did the opposition and the support job. You demonstrated what we learned from textbooks and other authors. “That life is not about education of one section of the society. Makinde okays recruitment of additional 500 Amotekun operatives Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has approved the recruitment of additional 500 corps into the State Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Amotekun. This is contained in a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, on Sunday in Ibadan. The statement indicated that Makinde announced the approval during the monthly security meeting with chairmen of local governments, heads of security agencies, traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the state. The governor said recruiting new corps would enhance Amotekun’s performance and further deepen the security architecture of the state. He said the meeting, held at the House of Parliament within the premises of the State House of Assembly, was part of his administration’s efforts to enhance security of lives and property in the state. He added that the meeting was to get the situation report from various quarters on security as well as to dialogue on what to do as stakeholders and fine tune necessary steps. He said the outcome would help the government to put necessary machinery in place for a safer environment. He emphasised that the security issue was a collective responsibility, adding, “Therefore, all hands must be on deck in order to curtail insecurity facing the country, in which Oyo State was not exempted. “Security is everyone’s business and if we all play our parts well, we will have a safer and more secured environment. “Though the security of lives and property is a paramount responsibility of the government, the government cannot do it alone except with cooperation of the entire citizenry.” Makinde used the occasion to appreciate the security agencies in the state for their unrelenting support towards making peaceful coexistence among the people of the state possible. He urged them to keep the pace up in order to allow for more influx of investments and commercial growth. In his remarks, a former governor of the state, Sen. Rasheed Ladoja, commended Makinde for being proactive in the area of security which has greatly helped the state. Ladoja urged all stakeholders and members of the public to be vigilant and ensure safety of their lives.

I initially had problem convincing men to patronise me – Lagos female barber, Precious A Lagos-based female barber, Precious Joseph, speaks to OPEYEMI ADEFEMI about her experience on the job Please introduce yourself. My name is Precious Joseph. I am 27 years old. I am an orphan but I have four older brothers. I became orphaned in 2004 at age nine. Did you go to school? My education stopped after secondary school. There was no means to further. Why did you choose to become a barber, a job commonly known with males? It actually started like a joke. Back then, anytime I was with my friends at a barbershop l would boast to them about how I could handle the clipper better. At the time, I knew nothing about hairstyling. Later on, I came across a female barber on Instagram. I was fascinated by her and used to watch her videos. I followed her closely on social media. I even turned on a notification for her posts. I was usually thrilled by the way she handled the clippers and leaves a clean shave on her customers. That was how I picked interest in the job. I also wanted to impress my friends who had doubted that I could become a good barber. Do you mean you learnt hairstyling on the Internet? Well, I actually had to learn it properly by becoming an apprentice under a barber. By August this year, it would be six years since I have been in this business. The beginning was really rough. Shortly after I started as an apprentice, I had to pull out to work, so I could earn money to support myself. As we all know, apprentices only learn from their bosses; they don’t earn. So, I had difficulty taking care of myself. Though I got support from my siblings, it was not enough as they have their own responsibilities too. So, I suspended the apprenticeship to go and make some money. At various times, I worked as a cleaner, front desk person, supervisor and so on before I was able to return to learning. In 2016 my boss relocated abroad, so I had to go work as a barber under someone else. I worked at two or three barbershops before I started mine. Did you have the support of your brothers to become a barber? In the beginning, they felt I wasn’t serious because I am a girl. They wondered why I wanted to learn hairstyling of all the available vocations. They suggested fashion designing, catering, photography and the like but I told them hairstyling was my interest. While growing up, I always boasted that I would become a soldier and my brothers had kicked fiercely against it. I had taken the form and I was at the screening. When my name appeared on the list and I broke the news to my brothers, they seized my bags and prevented me from going. They are my parents, so I had to drop the ambition of being a soldier. But I stuck to being a barber. I currently live with one of my brothers and he is the one who turns up for me the most. He has been taking care of me for years. He did not take me seriously until the morning of the day I resumed learning. But he has since been supportive and he even bought my first clippers. What has the experience been for you being a female barber? When I tell people I am a barber, they think it’s easier for me because I am a lady. To be honest, reverse is the case. It doesn’t work that way at all. When I was working for someone, before I set up my own barbershop, it was always very challenging being the only lady in the midst of guys at the salon. Usually we were being paid based on how many customers we serviced. As a lady, it was hard convincing customers that I could give them neat haircuts. Only a few customers were willing to give me a try. But the thing is, the customers I attended to always came back and would insist that I should be the one to cut their hair. They also referred their friends to me. I derive happiness in being able to satisfy my customers. What has the experience been working on your own? Entrepreneurship is not easy at all. I am trying my best. I am pushing. Having my own babershop is a dream come true for me. I believe that in few years, I will be bigger than this. 1 Share

Few weeks after claiming the WAFU B U-20 Championship, Nigeria again won the U-17 title in the region, as five-time world champions Golden Eaglets edged the Young Stallions of Burkina Faso 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Cape Coast Stadium in Ghana. Forward Abubakar Abdullahi had threatened the Burkinabe rear as early as the 8th minute when his low drive streamed away from goal, but in the 22nd minute, he rose highest in the box to powerfully nod Emmanuel Michael’s perfect delivery into the net for Nigeria’s first goal. In the 34th minute, Abdullahi missed a golden opportunity to make it two for himself and for Nigeria, but he flulled his lines, allowing the Stallions a respite. The miss would knock hard seven minutes later, when Abdulramane Ouedraogo, also with a header, equalized for Burkina Faso. Two minutes into the second half, Abdullahi got his second and Nigeria’s second, taking the Golden Eaglets to a 2-1 lead. However, 12 minutes later, he should have made it a hat-trick and Nigeria’s third but he lost the opportunity. That loss could once more have proved costly, as the Stallions broke forward, only to see Nigeria goalkeeper Richard Odoh come up with a magnificent save. In the 67th minute, Ebube Okeke rocked the crossbar from 25 yards, but there were to be no more goals and Nigeria collected a second regional diadem at youth level five weeks after the U20 boys defeated neighbours Benin Republic in the final to win the WAFU B competition in Niger Republic. Nigeria goalkeeper Richard Odoh was selected the Man-of-the-Match.  His compatriot Emmanuel Michael won the prize in all three previous matches against Ghana, Togo and Cote d’Ivoire. |

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, continues to receive high-profile politicians at his residence in Port Harcourt. The latest is the former Governor of Kano State and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwakwanso, who paid a private visit to Governor Wike on Friday. Both Wike and Kwakwanso were seen in front of the former’s residence exchanging pleasantries. This came about 24 hours after the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, as well as the Senate minority caucus, led by its leader, Philip Aduda, visited Wike. The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, also visited Wike on Wednesday. Similarly, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State had visited earlier in the week. The recent visits by the Peoples Democratic Party leaders, presidential candidates and top politicians, certainly have a connection with the 2023 general election. All the visits so far have been followed by a closed-door meeting with the outcome unknown to any.

The US Supreme Court on Friday ended the right to abortion in a seismic ruling that shreds half a century of constitutional protections on one of the most divisive and bitterly fought issues in American political life. The conservative-dominated court overturned the landmark 1973 “Roe v Wade” decision that enshrined a woman’s right to an abortion, saying that individual states can now permit or restrict the procedure themselves. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” the court said. In the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito said “abortion presents a profound moral issue on which Americans hold sharply conflicting views. “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion,” he said. Dissenting were the three liberals on the court. The ruling will likely set into motion a cavalcade of new laws in roughly half of the 50 US states that will severely restrict or outright ban and criminalize abortions, forcing women to travel long distances to states that still permit the procedure.
