PoliticsAba Stands Still As Biafran Group Remembers Fallen Heroes by chesterlee(op): 8:29am On May 31, 2015
The commercial city of Aba, Abia state literally stood still on Saturday as members of a Pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) marched round the city to honour fallen heroes of the group who laid down their lives during the Nigeria-Biafra civil war.

As early as 8.30am, members of the group numbering over 8,000 had gathered at the precinct of the Christ the King Catholic, CKC, church from where they marched to all parts of the city.

They marched through Asa road, Aba-Owerri road, Umule , Ariaria, Port Harcourt road and Ogbor Hill and later returned to the CKC where they took off from.

Motorists and pedestrians had a hectic time passing through the affected areas as traffic moved in a snail manner even as residents of the city trooped out to catch a glimpse of the group.

There was heavy security presence as several police patrol teams guided the march along the major roads while soldiers mounted an Armoured Personnel Carrier at Ehi road by Asa road junction.

Members of the group chanted pro Biafra songs like “ Ikwere na Biafra , Biafra, Biafra; Ikwere na Biafra, welie aka gi elu” meaning “If you believe in Biafra, Biafra, raise your hand up”, with the enthusiastic residents raising their hands  up in support and dancing to the rhythm of the song.

A cross section of them who spoke to 247ureports.com including Ikechukwu Mba said that the march was held to honour some of the Biafran freedom fighters who died during the Nigerian-Biafra Civil war.

Mba added that the march was part of the group’s efforts to press their agitation for the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra

Another member of the group, Francis Kalu told journalists that, “It is more than 100years after Lord Lugard amalgamated the people of Southern and Northern Nigeria. In the treaty, it was agreed that after 100years anyone that felt that they are no longer comfortable with staying in the union has the right to secede and that is what we are doing.”

He added that the Indigenous People of Biafra have been treated well as a people and called on Biafrans to continue the struggle until self determination is achieved.

“What we want is a sovereign state of Biafra and nothing else. We are going to achieve that soon.”

PoliticsThe Story of an Unknown Biafran Hero by chesterlee(op): 2:44pm On May 30, 2015
Today is Biafra Heroes Day...We remember an unknown Hero of Biafra

BRUCE MAYROCK is his name. He was a
Columbia University Student, 20 years of age from Old Westbury, New York.
Bruce Mayrock burnt himself to death on the lawn of the United Nations building Headquarters to protest against the genocide been committed during the Nigeria- Biafra war with a big sign that reads;
“YOU MUST STOP GENOCIDE! PLEASE SAVE NINE
MILLION BIAFRANS”.
Bruce Mayrock died about nine hours after he set
himself on fire.
Bruce Mayrock was born May 6, 1949 and he
took his own life for my people whom he never
met before in May 30, 1969.
Currently, I’m trying to make a comprehensive
research on Bruce Mayrock with his family
members, friends and the United Nation, which
might lead to a full documentary of this unknown
Hero.
Already in contact with Helaine M. Larina who
has already created a Grave memorial page for
him on September 24, 2006 and also agreed with
me that our people need to know about Bruce
Mayrock story and an international remembrance
day need to be officially created for him.
It’s unfortunate that this Hero is not even known
by the Eastern people of Nigeria whom this young man took his own life for at a very ripe age.
There’s need to make a very intelligent
documentary of Bruce Mayrock and also create
out a special day for him to be remembered and
honored for this scarifies.
Among the International Newspapers that wrote
comprehensively about Bruce Mayrock’s protest
suicide for Biafra was - The Straits Times, 3 June
1969 edition.
Hopefully, if the National Library Singapore assist
to supplies document reproductions from the
physical collections (books, journals, newspapers, microfilms) of the National Library Board of Singapore libraries on this subject on a stated procedures and principles, Bruce Mayrock heroic documentary will be half way to success.
The CBS Evening News for Thursday, May 29,
1969 with Headline: Columbia / Immolation, also
reported from their Studio saying “Near United
Nations building, Columbia University student
Bruce Mayrock sets self afire to protest Biafran
war and the Genocide being committed by the
Nigeria side. Bruce Mayrock is currently
hospitalized”.
Already, I have identified CBS Evening News
REPORTER who reported the incident as: Walter
Cronkite.
Walter Cronkite gave his report to the Studio of
CBS Evening News at 00:23:50 am to 00:24:20
am with time duration of 00:30 on Thursday, May
29, 1969.
Hopefully, Vanderbilt Television News Archive USA shall assist for additional items on this research subject from other Television stations.
Already identified Mount Ararat Cementery,
Farmingdale, Suffolk county, New York as where
Bruce Mayrock was later buried and his grave has also be identified.

Will the Muhammadu Buhari of 30 years ago show himself — the harsh military dictator who jailed journalists, inflicted physical humiliation on civil servants and expelled thousands of immigrants? In a country that has taken much punishment from bad rulers and continues to do so, he was one of the worst, critics say.
