The Boko Haram terrorist group could be beneficiaries of the money made from crude oil theft in Nigeria, members of the United States Congress said on Tuesday.

At a meeting with the Bring Back Our Girls group at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the Congressmen urged the Nigerian government to curb the flow of the movement of such monies.

They also stressed the need for the National Assembly to heighten talks on the Boko Haram insurgency and rescue of the Chibok girls.

The dogged Bring Back Our Girls group articulated their stance, backed with a renewed solidarity by the U.S. Congress at the Embassy, something they were hopeful would yield result.

As they sang their usual chant, they called for more efforts to rescue the over 200 girls abducted on April 14, 2014 by members of the Boko Haram sect terrorising communities in Nigeria’s north-east.

The Congressmen had held talks with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian military and other government officials on regional security, counter-terrorism efforts and the Boko Haram terrorist group.

At the end of their visit, a press conference was held and the Head of Delegation and a member of the Judicial Committee, U.S. Congress, Issa Darrel, clearly spelt out their thoughts on funding of the Hoko Haram activities, saying that the terrorist group could have benefited from the spoils of crude oil theft in Nigeria’s south-south region.

The U.S. pledged greater technical support towards curbing insurgency as well as rescuing the Chibok girls.

They also encouraged the National Assembly to heighten talks on security issues.

The visit was another defining moment for the Bring Back Our Girls group who now pin their hopes on the renewed collaboration between the two countries.

A co-convener of the group, Hadiza Bala-Usman, expressed optimism that the support from the U.S. would help in securing the girls’ rescue.

Nigeria has reached the critical point of her insecurity challenge and now looks forward to interventions like this to carve out a new sense of direction in the battle.

On Monday, the Congressmen told the Nigerian military that the U.S. had started consideration of the Leahy law to ease restrictions on arms deal with Nigeria, raising hopes that talks between President Muhammadu Buhari and Barack Obama during the Nigerian President’s visit to the U.S. would yield results.

Illegal mining is being carried out by Nigerians and foreigners (especially Chinese) in various parts of the country. I was told that there are Chinese carrying out illegal mining in some parts of Niger State and ordinary citizens cannot challenge them because they carry weapons and can kill. Makes one wonder what our security agencies are up to.

Abuja - President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that the Federal Government will no longer tolerate illegal mining and other improper activities inhibiting the growth of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

The president gave the warning after receiving a briefing from top officials of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk.

The president, who noted that the mines and steel sector was very important for the diversification of the economy, expressed displeasure at Farouk’s report that the sector had been overrun by illegal miners.

"This is one of the most demoralising briefs I have received. The biggest threat to this country besides the Boko Haram is unemployment and the mining sector is key to employment creation.

"We cannot be held back on such a strategic industry that can give us much needed jobs and promote economic growth.

"There must be more seriousness in running this country and we are determined to instill that seriousness," the President said.

The Permanent Secretary had said Nigeria’s mining sector had been infiltrated by “illegal aliens” who carried out unlawful mining activities in the country.

Also on Tuesday in Abuja, President Buhari directed the Ministry of Environment to undertake a rigorous study of Lake Chad and bring up proposals on how best to reverse the shrinking of the lake.

He said it had served as a major source of livelihood for thousands of people.

The president gave the directive after receiving a briefing from the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Nana Mede, the challenges facing the ministry.

President Buhari noted that the security and economic challenges faced by member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission could be substantially ameliorated with an improvement in the economic value of the lake.

The president also urged the Ministry of Environment to take up the challenge of researching cheaper ways of sourcing energy for cooking apart from firewood.

Mede had informed President Buhari that the lake had receded considerably from the 1960s, when it covered an area of more than 26,000 square kilometres, to less than one-tenth of that size currently.

You are right. But the decision is still that of the investors to make. They are the ones putting their money on the line, about 1.5billion dollars.

And they would have done an extensive risk assessment before making their decision on a location.

With such a magnitude of investment, the govt cannot by fiat dictate a location where they MUST site their project. It will be counter productive.

Govt can only advise.

Any sensible business person who wants to build a yard where ships will be serviced and repaired will automatically consider Lagos before any other place. It is a strategic business decision and not mundane ethnic sentimentalism.

Investors consider many things before siting their projects in an area of choice. The govt can only advise them to consider relocating it. They can't force them. And if they do, it will affect foreign investor inflows into the country.

Lagos was not built in a day. The state is already too congested other regions should be encouraged to develop as well.......

No probs that's the job of EFCC and not that of a petroleum minister. They claim they have the names, they should start the investigations and so on, its not the job of an NNPC head to do..

Take it or leave it, Lagos is the most investor-friendly state in Nigeria. Why do you think Dangote chose to build his refinery in Lagos and not the Niger Delta? ....and Lagos as a former federal capital was built with money from OIL.

Those are political talks. The project should move rightly to where it ought to be. Enough of all these....

Samsung and Hyundai heavy industries are the main proponents of the project.

Sure they should protest. Is Niger - Delta region only to be milked off oil with no related industry situated there?

Its unjust really. How many industry apart from rigs to suck off oil have been situated in this regions Yet its the region producing the bulk of Nigerian wealth.
