According to the information shared by ABN,a train and trailer today collided in Aba.The incident which happened at Aba /Owerri Road by Factory Road in Aba, Abia State occurred when the trailer driver was trying to zoom pass a Police checkpoint ,not knowing there was an oncoming train.Whether there was casualties or not was not reported.

Xmas: Umahi announces 13th month salary bonus for Ebonyi workers

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has said he would pay one month salary bonus as part of his Christmas package to workers.

Umahi, who was on a visit to the Ebonyi State University permanent site in Ezzamgbo, said in spite of the recession in the country and the fact that the state is one of the lowest recepients of federal allocations, his administration was determined to improve the lot of its workers.

Explaining that junior workers would receive 100 per cent bonus and senior workers 50 percent , he challenged the university authorities to emulate his administration by paying salaries on or before 20th of every month.

To the university workers and students, he said his adminstration would also put smile on their faces during the Christmas period. To this end, he announced the donation of a bag of rice each to all staff of the university and N5m to be shared by them .
He also gave 3,000 bags of rice and N10 million to the students as their Christmas gifts and donated two buses to the Students Union Government for easy transportation of students to their various campuses.

The governor further stated that the state House of Assembly had already given approval for sums to be spent on the largesse, stressing that his government was not owing workers salaries.

Recall that Umahi had announced 5 per cent salary increment to all the workers on October 1 this year.

Umahi further disclosed his administration's plan to begin immediate payment of gratuity arrears owed by both local and state governments since 1993 amounting to N8bn.

The governor, who expressed dismay that civil servants found it difficult to pay their retired colleagues their pensions but would want to be paid when they retired, said the payment of gratuities would begin this month with the families of retirees who are now late.

He said,"We are not owing anybody pension in Ebonyi State. Gratuity is owed since 1993 and gratuity for both local and state governments is over N8bn but the funny thing is that when you seat as a civil servants,you refuse to pay others their gratuities and when you now leave, you start insisting, we should pay gratuity.

"So, for those we have owed gratuity for a very long time;we are expecting a miracle. What we want to do for our brothers and sisters that were not paid gratuities and they are dead, we intend to look at them and see how we can pay off their gratuities through their families and we hope to do it this December.

"We also want to pay everyone that has retired 10 per cent of whatever we owe him/her in the name of pension and other allowances."

Umahi further disclosed that his government haD assisted Ebonyians mostly women doing petty business (not hawkers) in Lagos with N140m to enhance their business opportunities.

The governor also announced there was no going back on dry season farming in the state next year.

The APC has constituted a 13 man National Campaign Council for the forthcoming Rivers state legislative elections headed by His Excellency Dt Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state.

Inaugurating the council, the APC national chairman, Chief John Odiegie-Oyegun expressed confidence that although the elections are challenging, the council members are equal to the task, in view of their experiences.

In his remarks, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje said the council will consult widely and work assiduously towards replicating the victory recorded in Ondo state.

In a related development, the Governor-elect of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu expressed his gratitude to His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and other members of the APC Campaign Council for Ondo, for their effort in ensuring his victory. He stated this at the party's National Headquarters in Abuja.

Two Kenyan politicians fought in public at an opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally. One of the politicians is a serving member of parliament, the other is an aspirant planning to challenge him in the elections expected to be held in August next year. 

Homa Bay MP Opondo Kaluma was pictured wrestleing aspiring candidate Washington Ogaga (in kitenge) after they disagreed during a political rally in Homa Bay town on 27th November, 2016. The two who had earlier attended a memorial service at the late Otieno Kajwang's home in Mbita, where Governor Cyprian Awiti's car was allegedly pelted with stones, came face to face and square it out physically to the surprise of other Nyanza leaders.

Homa Bay Town MP Opondo Kaluma and his opponent Washington Ogaga may be disqualified from participating in ODM party primaries ahead of 2017 general election for fighting in public.

ODM national Chairman John Mbadi has announced that the party has launched investigations into the alleged misconduct by the duo, which saw them resort to a fist fight during a campaign rally in Homa Bay on Sunday.

Fayose promises to re-open "Fayose Market" within the next 48 hours if his conditions are met

Governor Ayodele Fayose has promised to re-open within the next 48hrs Fayose GSM Market, Ado-Ekiti that has remained under lock and key for more than one week if his conditions on cleanliness and decorum are met by the traders.

The governor said this after a meeting with traders from the market at the government house on Monday. The governor had directed the closure of the market about two weeks ago after some unscrupulous elements in the market stabbed a government official who was on official duty in the market.

Here are snippets from the meeting:

1. Mr. Kehinde Badmus, President, Fayose Market Traders' Association(FMTA) expressed regret that a representative of the government was attacked and promised such will never repeat itself.

2. Badmus said they were at the government house to beg the governor for forgiveness. He thanked the governor for his effort at upgrading the market to one of the best in Nigeria(he described the market as the second largest phone market in Nigeria after the popular computer village in Lagos).

3. Governor Fayose in his response said he will not compromise standard in making the market one of the best in Nigeria. He said he would not allow anyone destroy his handiwork while alive. He recalled how he tarred the parking lots in the market within his first 100 days in office during his second coming. He said, "I started the renovation of that market, if you want to enter that market before during rainy season, you have to roll up your trouser, nobody dare park inside that market, it had become a shanty, I came, I renovated the market and put asphalt everywhere.

"I brought that bank(Access Bank) to make life easier for you, did I ask you to contribute money? (No). I gave #2.1m to the ministry of Water resources to run a pipe directly from waterworks to the market, we are only awaiting connection. I didn’t ask you to pay for all these, you are the ones doing business and making profit in that place but I say I want a market that is well kept, you can't take that away from me, I will keep closing that market until you get it right.

4. The governor condemned practices such as cooking inside shops(which could cause fire outbreak), dumping of refuse inside canal and indiscriminate placement of containers in the market stressing that he won't allow sanitation and neatness be compromised in the market.

5. Governor Fayose charged the leadership of the market to stand firm and enforce discipline. "If you have any problem implementating good policies in the market, come to me, I will close that person's shop. Tell the bad elements within the market that they can't operate in the market anymore. Anyone giving you problem will be banned from the market, two masters doesn't stay in a ship", the governor told the president.

6. The governor said a day must be set aside for sanitation.

7. Governor Fayose directed that one of the two gates leading to Irona be blocked to enhance security. He called on traders to give him genuine information about touts and bad elements in the market with a promise to flush them out immediately.

8. Contributions and suggestions from traders.

9. Chief Mrs. Funke Anjorin who affirmed that Cleanliness is next to Godliness in her vote of thanks reiterated the traders' love and support for the Fayose administration. She thanked the governor for his efforts at making the market an enviable model in Nigeria.

8 members of non-academic staff of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua were involved in a fatal accident on Saturday Nov 26 near Dapchi on their way to Damaturu for promotional examinations. 6 of the victims of the staff of USCOEGA lost their lives in the tragedy.They have since been buried.

On hearing the sad news, Senator Lawan representing Yobe North paid a condolence visit to the families of the Yobe citizens who lost their lives in the incident.
