President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated President Macky Sall of Senegal on his re-election for a second term.

Sall was declared winner of the election held on Sunday 24 February, in the provisional results announced by the electoral body.

Naija Politico learnt that President Macky Sall won 58.27 per cent of the votes. Challenger Idrissa Seck, came second with 21 percent of votes.

President Buhari commended the people of Senegal on the successful and peaceful conduct of the presidential election, noting that the scenario of successful elections in West African countries is a sign of hope that democracy has come to stay in the sub-region.

While wishing the Senegalese people peace, stability and progress, President Buhari looked forward to working with President Sall to advance existing bilateral cooperation in various fields for the benefits of their citizens.

At the sub-regional level, the Nigerian leader expressed readiness to partner with his Senegalese counterpart to achieve greater progress in the economic, governance, peace, security and humanitarian fields.

Sall’s opponents, Seck, who came second and Ousmane Sonko, who placed third with 16 percent, said in a joint statement: “We firmly and full heartedly reject these results. [Sall] has disregarded the will of the people.”

“We will not make an appeal to the constitutional council,” they added, without specifying what their next move might be.

More than 66 percent of 6.7 million registered voters took part in the election.

The Federal High Court Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced AVM Tony Omenyi to seven years in prison for receiving N136 million bribe from Nigerian Air force, (NAF) contractors.

Delivering judgment, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, said that he was satisfied that the prosecution had proved its case and testimonies of its witnesses were not controverted.

NAN reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), arraigned Omenyi, for receiving N136 million kick back from Syrius Technologies and Sky Experts Limited , two contractors of the Nigeria Air Force.

Naija Politico learnt that he was charged on three counts bordering on abuse of office and money laundering but pleaded not guilty.

“The court did not believe that the evidence given by Omenyi in his defence was credible.

“The defence was a sham,” the judge held.

The judge noted that if actually the money the defendant received from Mrs Theresa Etu, a NAF contractor was a refund as he claimed, the said expenditure should have had receipts to show for it.

“For example the N15 million he said he helped her pay for refueling of two aircraft, he should have received a receipt from those who refuelled but no receipt or invoice was tendered in court by the defence.”

The judge wondered what motivation the defendant had in expending his own money in executing a contract on behalf of a contractor.

He further noted that it was pertinent for a public office holder to operate at arms length with a contractor, particularly one that was working for the office in which he had due influence over.

He further wondered how the defendant could claim to have made expenditure on behalf of Etu when he was a co-owner of the business she operated and her business partner.

The judge pronounced that:” In view of the above, I find the defendants guilty and convict them accordingly.

He sentenced the convict to seven years in prison on each of the three counts preferred against him to run concurrently with effect from Thursday.

He also ordered that the N62 million recovered from him by the EFCC be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The judge further made an order that the convict’s company, which was the second defendant in the suit be wound up having being used as a conduit pipe to perpetrate economic fraud.

Omenyi had said in his defence that the monies he received from Etu, were refunds for services he undertook on her behalf.

Counsel to the convict, Mr Gordy Uche had appealed to the judge to temper justice with mercy particularly since the convict was a first time offender and had served the country meritoriously.

The Prosecutor, Mr Mohammed Abubakar confirmed that the agency had no record of a previous conviction.

He urged the court to, inline with Section 15(4) of the Money Laundering Act, make an order winding up the second defendant, since it was a company registered in Nigeria.

Omenyi, retired, was the former Managing Director of Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), a company owned by the Nigeria Air Force.

In the cause of the trial, the first prosecution witness, Mr Hassan Saidu, an EFCC Principal Detective, informed the court that the investigation of the defendant was triggered by a letter from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

He said that the letter had alleged that the defendant was operating suspicious accounts.

Alhaji Buba Galadima, one of the spokespersons of the defeated presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party has resurfaced days after he was allegedly arrested by Department of State Services.

News about Galadima’s arrest was spread by the PDP spin doctors, but the DSS promptly denied he was in its custody.

Naija Politico learnt that the spokesperson of the DSS, Peter Afunanya denied that he was arrested by the secret agency.

On Wednesday, Galadima appeared at the Press Conference addressed by Atiku in Abuja, apparently coming out from hiding.

Galadima’s arrest rumour was triggered by a statement credited to the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo.

Keyamo on Sunday called on security agencies to arrest Galadima for allegedly plotting to announce Atiku Abubakar of the PDP winner of the presidential election.

This was quickly followed by ‘news’ that Galadima was arrested by DSS.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Assistant Commissioner of Police (DCP) Frank Mba said the police were not aware of Galadima’s arrest.

His wife, Hajiya Fanna Galadima on Tuesday told Daily Trust that she received a handwritten letter at about 6 am, signed by her husband with assurances of his good health.

His son Dr Shettima Galadima, said the letter was brought to the gate of the house by an unidentified person.

Buba Galadima in the letter told them not to be apprehensive and did not disclose his whereabouts.

According to Daily Trust, Hajiya Fanna said Galadima was “arrested” moments after he drove out of the house. She claimed that an unmarked vehicle was noticed patrolling up and down their street in Wuse 2, Abuja before the alleged arrest.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained the Kwara state Commissioner of Finance, Nurudeen Banu and the Accountant General of the State, Sulaiman Ishola, over investigations into alleged slush funds for 2019 elections.

Daily Trust reported that the duo are being held at the Ilorin, Kwara state Zonal head office of the anti-graft agency to explain the utilisation of over N1 billion fund received from a commercial bank a few days to the election.

Both Banu and Ishola, are being held to explain why the money was received and how it was disbursed, the newspaper reported.

The EFCC had been asked by the Kwara Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability (KWARA-CGGA) to probe the over N1billion loan the State Government secured from a bank a few days before the general elections.

The secretary general of the group, Hassan Omoiya said it had intelligence that the state government obtained the loan on 13 February from a first generation bank using the remittance of Kwara State VAT allocation due in February and March 2019 as collateral.

“We urge the EFCC and indeed the Federal Ministry of Finance to determine the appropriateness of utilisation of credit facility of N1 billion by Kwara State Government at the twilight of general election.”

“The status of VAT Account as collateral for the credit facility in the absence of prior approval and authorization from Debt Management Office and Federal Ministry of Finance in tandem with extant laws and regulation on granting of loan to State Governments.

“It is our expectation that your investigation will extend to individuals and corporate institutions that participated in the unwholesome act with a view of prosecuting the affected individuals and institutions with attendant cost and penalty.”

Prince Tony Momoh, former Minister of Information, on Wednesday advised the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Feb. 23 election, Atiku Abubakar to concede defeat and congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari.

Momoh gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos while reacting to the declaration of Buhari as winner of the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu while announcing the results of the polls on Wednesday in Abuja, said the APC candidate, Muhammadu Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes to the defeat his PDP counterpart, Atiku, who polled 11,255,978 votes.

Atiku had in a statement described the results as questionable, saying he would challenge it in court.

Momoh said Atiku would earn respect, nationally and international, if he accepts the outcome of the results as the wish of the people.

The former minister also advised Atiku not to go to court but call to congratulate Buhari like former President Goodluck Jonathan did in 2015.

He said the singular act made Jonathan an instant hero, adding that Atiku could earn the same status if he allows national interest to rise above his personal ambition.

“A beautiful thing happened shortly after the results were announced in the 2015 general elections; Jonathan called the winner (Buhari) and congratulated him.

“That singular act not only made Jonathan a respected national figure, but also an international figure.

“Therefore, as a national leader, I will call on our friend, Atiku to call Buhari and congratulate him.

“That will make him not just a national figure like Jonathan, but also an international figure.

“Though court is an option, I advise him not to go to court because time will tell if he will get any reckoning after doing so.

“He should not allow anybody to deceive him, instead, he should immediately call Buhari to congratulate him,“ Momoh said.

Momoh said he believed the outcome of the election reflected the wishes of the people, adding that it was the aggregate of the results from polling units across the country.

He said that INEC had done what was expected of it as an impartial electoral umpire.

Momoh said that he advised Atiku not because he did not believe in the court to seek redress as he went to court with Buhari in 2003, 2007 and 2011 to challenge election results.

Naija Politico learnt that the former Minister said he only gave the advice because Atiku would earn respect by conceding defeat, rather than challenging what he called the will of the people.

I am grateful to God for sparing our lives to witness another milestone in Nigeria’s democratic development – namely conclusion of the Presidential election in an overwhelmingly peaceful manner.

2. I wish, Mr Chairman, to congratulate all the Presidential candidates and their teams on a hard-fought campaign. We may have had different views during the campaign, but the one thing most of us have in common is love of our country and our desire to improve conditions for Nigerians.

3. From the comments of several observers both local and foreign, it is obvious that the elections were both free and fair.

4. Now that the elections are over, and a winner declared, we must all see it as a victory for Nigeria, our dear country. That was why I encouraged my teeming supporters, in a speech I read earlier today, not to gloat. Our God-given victory is enough cause for joy, without deriding those who were in the opposition. All Nigerians, going forward, must stand in brotherhood, for a bright and fulfilling future.

5. I therefore want to assure that we will continue to engage all parties that have the best interest of Nigerians at heart. Our Government will remain inclusive and our doors will remain open. That is the way to build the country of our dream; safe, secure, prosperous, and free of impunity and primitive accumulation by those entrusted with public offices.

6. The hard work to deliver a better Nigeria continues, building on the foundations of peace, rule of law and opportunities for all. We will roll up our sleeves afresh, and give it our all. We have no other motive than to serve Nigeria with our hearts and might, and build a nation which we and generations to come can be proud of.

7. I am very grateful to the over 15 million citizens who voted for me, those who contributed in many ways in the running of our successful campaign, and those at home and abroad who expressed confidence in me and the APC Government. I thank you all.

8. I can assure that you will see a country moving to the Next Level, as we consolidate on our fundamental areas of securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption. Many other focal areas, as stated in our campaign manual, will be added, to the good things we plan for our country.

9. Let me pay tribute here to those who lost their lives either through accidents or mindless violence during the course of these elections. My heart and thoughts are with the families of the victims. May God comfort and give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

10. Election is not war, and should never be seen as a do or die affair. I pray that we all accept this democratic approach to elections, however contentious.

The bigwig of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spoke in Hausa to placate the people over the loss.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the three senatorial seats and many seats of the House of Representatives.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar failed to make the minimum 25 per cent of the votes cast in Kano and Yobe States, according to the results announced by INEC.

In the result announced in Kano, Muhammadu Buhari of the APC polled 1,464,768 (78.9%) of the vote cast, while Atiku Abubakar of the PDP polled 391,573 (21.1%).

A candidate must win at least 25 per cent of the votes in two thirds of the state, apart from winning majority votes to win the presidential election.

The President of the Senate Dr Bukola Saraki has accepted the outcome of the Kwara Central Senatorial elections which he lost and has congratulated those who emerged.

In a statement issued by Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu made available to Naija Politico, Saraki said that he was wishing those who emerged best of luck in spite of the reported inadequacies.

The statement reads:

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has stated that in spite of the reported inadequacies that attended last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Kwara State, he is wishing the candidates who emerged from the election the best of luck.

Dr. Saraki in a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu stated that while the election was generally peaceful there are inadequacies like the card readers not used in over 70 percent of the polling units while there were multiple voting, over-voting and other discrepancies that were reported by agents of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) across the state. He added that the state chapter of his party will take a position on the right response to these inadequacies.

“However, whatever the final outcome of the election, I wish the candidates that have emerged all the best in their attempts to serve our people. It is my prayers that the good people of Kwara State will always have the best from any government both at state and federal levels.

“As a product of a family and a political structure that is, from its foundation, devoted to the service and development of our state and its people, it is my wish that our people will always have a good deal at all times. The new development will even provide the people the opportunity to compare and contrast. After all, the people who have emerged from last Saturday’s election are not my enemies. They are fellow Kwarans.

“As we prepare for the March 9, 2019 Governorship and House of Assembly elections, let me reiterate my position that the candidates of the PDP in the election represent the best materials for our dear State, Kwara. President Muhammadu Buhari will secure between 70 and 80 per cent of total votes to be cast in Saturday’s presidential election, Sen. Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters said.

Enang, who spoke with State House correspondents on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, made available to Naija Politico said Buhari has demonstrated his commitment towards a free, fair and credible election.

He said the greatest re-assurance Buhari gave Nigerians is his stance that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ought to have been ready having being preparing for three and half years for the election.

“This has shown that Buhari is a democrat and is not in any manner capable of being accused of working in tandem to postpone the election.

`He is a true democrat; and that he is confident as all of us are that in the Saturday’s election, all Nigerians, great majority of Nigerians, 70 to 80 per cent of Nigerians will vote for him.

“From the campaigns on the field, all the feelers we had, the support we got from the East, the West, the South, the North and all parts of the country Buhari is the best person to go for a second term as president.

“This makes us confident. I am sure that in every state of the federation, Buhari is able to show what he has done.

“ In every state of the federation, the president showed that he is not partial, that he is not in any manner tilted in favour of one state against the other,’’ he said.

The special assistant said the All Progressives Congress (APC) is upbeat on victory going by the level of support it has garnered across the country.

According to him, Buhari has shown that he is a president for all and exclusively for none.

Enang said the president is for the rich, the poor, the unable, and every strata of the society as he has identified with everybody.

He said there were pointers that the APC would not only win presidential election, but secure the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and the senate.

On whether there would be sanctions against INEC, he said what the commission deserved is support and comfort to conduct a credible election.

On interference from the international community, Enang said that there is need to maintain diplomatic protocol.

“And when you are in a country, you are subjected to the laws of that country; there are limitations and red lines, which you must not cross.

“When you cross the red lines in diplomacy, you are capable of being declared persona non grata.

“But Nigeria has not gotten to that stage and that is why it is issuing simple reminders as to what is the best international practice in diplomacy,’’ he said.

On destruction of electoral materials in some states, he said he was confident that INEC would replace them before the rescheduled date for the poll.

He also expressed optimism that APC would win in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

Chief Kingsley Moghalu, presidential candidate of the Young People’s Party (YPP), says the endorsement of a particular candidate by Ohaneze Ndi Igbo is in vain.

Moghalu disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Awka.

Naija Politico learnt that the President General of the Igbo Socio-cultural group, John Nwodo, endorsed the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Nwodo said Atiku’s endorsement was for the sake of Peter Obi. However, the endorsement raised a lot of controversy within and outside the group.

Days after Atiku’s endorsement, the Secretary-General of the same group, Uche Okwukwu, endorsed the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking during the interview, Moghalu insisted that the group or its leaders had no power to influence the voting pattern of the Igbos.

He said youths in South East are now wise to know who to vote for and not for Ohaneze to compel them on what to do.

“We in the South East now know that our elders in Ohaneze have been economical with the truth, they tell us what they want us to believe for reasons best known to them.

“This time around the youth in the region have decided to vote for candidates that appeal to them in terms of development plans for the country,” he said.

Moghalu said he has done much for Nigerians to deserve their votes in Feb. 23, poll.

“I did so much for the country while serving as the deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“I introduced POS services; the ATM card was also my initiative as well as Bank Verification Number (BVN) for identification of accounts.

“I did all these to make the economy vibrant, it is also my contribution towards making ease of doing business possible.

“If given the chance, I will do more for the country to enable it join the league of developed countries where youths will be proud to stay and earn their living,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed the Inspector General Of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 command, Joseph Mbu over statements and utterances recently credited to him saying the utterances are capable of inciting mass killings, violence and anarchy.

The leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo Youths Worldwide, has urged Igbo youths not to be demoralised by the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly Election.

The National President of Ohaneze Ndigbo’s Youth Wing, Mr Arthur Obiorah, made the appeal while addressing newsmen in Awka, on Monday.

Obiorah urged them to rather view the development as one of God’s divine plans for a better future for the country.

“As Christians, let us believe God is preparing us for better things, a better level in the near future of our dear country.

“I know it is not easy, but I want them to know it is a sacrifice we must all make to get the country working again,” he said.

He charged the youths to remain resolute and prepare to cast their votes overwhelmingly on Feb. 23 and March 9.

Obiorah, however, said the body had not changed its position of voting for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Mr Peter Obi.

“The Ohaneze Ndigbo Ime-Obi has issued a statement to state where the Igbo belong; in restructuring we believe and in Atiku/Obi presidential ticket we believe because of their promise.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has debunked a statement by Doyin Okupe, crediting Senate President Bukola Saraki with his appointment in 2015, Naija Politico learnt.

The Minister’s Office described Okupe’s statement as a bold-face lie. Okupe is the Special Adviser (Media) to the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

“The entire statement by Dr. Okupe is nothing but fiction writing, for which he deserves a hall of infamy award (in the fiction writing segment). Not one of the claims he made in his statement is true”, said Segun Adeyemi, special media adviser to the minister.

“For the record, Alhaji Lai Mohammed owes his appointment as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to President Muhammadu Buhari and no one else. It is therefore laughable that anyone will seek to take credit for that appointment.

“We challenge Dr. Okupe, who concocted the story in question, to make available to Nigerians any evidence he may have to support his assertion that the President sought the permission of Dr. Saraki to appoint Alhaji Mohammed as Minister.

“We understand that Dr. Okupe’s cheap attempt at mud-throwing is nothing but a proxy fight, rooted deeply in the politics of Kwara State.

“We are aware that Dr. Okupe’s boss is feeling the heat emanating from the ‘O To Ge’ (enough is enough) movement in Kwara, and that even the strongest of men will become disoriented and disillusioned at losing the support of a people who once venerated them to high heavens. But that is a self-inflicted wound for which Okupe’s boss, an acclaimed slave master, has no one but himself to blame.

“Alhaji Mohammed is very proud to lead the ‘O To Ge’ movement that is set to finally bring down the Berlin Wall of political hegemony in Kwara State and send Dr. Okupe’s boss into political oblivion. That will also free Dr. Okupe himself from merely being his master’s voice, so he can fully devote his time to his new-found pastime – fiction writing”.

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), has said it was time to hold accountable, any state institutions that strive to weaken democracy.

Oshiomhole spoke on Monday at the opening of the meeting of the caucus of APC in Abuja to deliberate on the rescheduled elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari was in a position to call such institutions to order.

Accusing INEC for having hidden agenda in the general elections, he said: “We must insist that elections should not be compromised and the Residents Electoral Commissioners (REC) that have compromised the elections should be made to account.’’

He said that APC would formally forward a letter to the Chairman of INEC. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to extract explanations to some vexing issues arising from the postponement of the elections.

For instance, INEC reported it was reconfiguring 180,000 card readers meant for 176,000 polling units, thus calling to question if the remaining 4,000 were enough to cope with emergencies.

He accused INEC of trying to deliberately deny the ruling APC of votes in its stronghold, explaining that the electoral body should have made provision for additional 176,000 card readers for emergency.

Oshiomhole asked INEC to explain what it was doing differently to address the sample ballot papers and result sheets already in public domain.

He said that INEC should tell Nigerians what it was doing between now and Saturday when the presidential and NASS elections would be conducted.

“INEC violated our confidence and must try to convince us to regain it,’’ he said.

He also said that APC would continue campaign as INEC had no power to ban campaigns said the action was illegal and unconstitutional.

“We are entitled to resume campaign until 24 hours to the elections.’’

Following the opposition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ban on electioneering during the one week extension of poll, the commission will meet today to review the restriction.

INEC, according to its national chairman’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, would meet to review its position and decide whether or not to reopen campaigns.

The two leading parties have argued that the commission’s restriction has no basis in law.

The PDP also alleged that fresh facts have confirmed that officials of the federal government and the APC have been sabotaging INEC in a well-orchestrated plot to engineer staggered presidential election, contrary to simulated stance by the presidency and the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

The main opposition party also urged the electoral body to rescind its decision on the suspension of campaigns by political parties, a position backed by the Director of Strategic Communications of the ruling party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, who described as illegal, the decision of INEC not to allow political parties to engage in further campaigns, despite the postponement of the presidential election to Saturday.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked Nigerians to blame successive governments since 1999 and the National Assembly responsible for the postponement of Saturday’s presidential election.

That will mean blaming 16 years of PDP administration and less than four years of APC for the election fiasco.

“Given the increasing tendency to postpone elections and the cumulative failures and corruption over the years, SERAP would, after the elections, pursue appropriate legal action against the government in power and the National Assembly leadership for the catalogue of breaches of constitutional and international obligations, and seek effective remedies for the citizens,”SERAP said.

In a statement signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare and made available to Naija Politico, the organization said: “The postponement of Nigeria’s elections since 2007 shows a systemic failure of leadership at the highest level of government, and suggests that our electoral process is deliberately skewed in favour of politicians’ interests, who continue to profit from the corruption and impunity that have characterised the process since 1999, and against those of the citizens.”

“Calling for the resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu rather than addressing the root causes of persistent postponement of elections is a blatant attempt by politicians to scapegoat the electoral commission.”

“While the INEC leadership ought to proactively push for reform of the electoral system, successive governments and leadership of the National Assembly that have the legal responsibility but have remained largely impervious to revolutionary change of the electoral system, should be held to account for this fundamental breach of public trust.”

“Foisting outdated electoral system on Nigerians, and spending huge public funds to sustain it, seems in uneasy tension with constitutional provisions and Nigeria’s international obligations including under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance to which Nigeria is a state party.”

“Rather than prioritising genuine and comprehensive reforms of the electoral system that would upgrade and modernize our voting processes, successive governments and leadership of the National Assembly would seem to prefer the status quo, presumably to undermine citizens’ right to participation and to continue to profit from the corruption and impunity that the current system and processes breed.”

“It is clear that the current electoral process is vulnerable to corruption but politicians would seem to have little incentive to comprehensively reform, upgrade and modernise it. It is unlikely that either the federal government or the National Assembly would take the steps necessary to sort out our electoral system, and improve transparency, accountability and integrity of the electoral process.”

“We urge Nigerians to take more active role in the fight against corruption, including by putting pressure on the authorities at the federal and state levels and the National Assembly to comprehensively reform, upgrade and modernize our electoral system and processes. Otherwise, citizens’ right to participate in the governance system will remain a ‘hollow right’.”

“Given that the right to vote is considered a part of an individual’s fundamental right to political participation, persistent postponement of elections in the country raises serious questions about the legitimacy and integrity of Nigeria’s fledgling democracy.”

“Persistent failure to upgrade and modernize the electoral system has effectively relegated the right of participation to paper tiger status, undermining the ability of citizens to genuinely participate in the fight against corruption and to hold their leaders to account. Yet, a transparent, accountable and modernized electoral process is a prerequisite to the effective exercise of citizenship in a democratic society.”

“No right is more precious in a democratic country than that of having a voice in the election of those who represent us. That voice is not lost when the electoral process is skewed in favour of politicians’ interests and against the Nigerian voters. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined by the collective failure to upgrade and modernize the country’s electoral processes.”

“It is time to push for revolutionary changes in how Nigeria conducts its elections. The changes should effectively deploy modern technology, which has been successfully used in the business and other sectors in the country. Such changes may include the introduction of a national system of Internet voting, to innovative ideas on how to adapt the election systems to facilitate participation by different sectors of the population, to conform with twenty-first century elections.”

“The postponement is the by-product of a systemic and collective failure by successive governments and National Assembly leadership to provide Nigerians with reliable, efficient and secured electoral system, which has continued to undermine public confidence in elections as well as the public’s right to vote and participate in their own government.”

“SERAP would also deploy the Freedom of Information Act to seek information on details of spending by INEC since 1999, as part of our initiatives to improve transparency and accountability of governmental operations and promote respect for citizens’ right to participate in the processes of government and governance in the country.”

“SERAP notes that postponement of general elections has become a recurring feature of the country’s electoral process. For example, the 2007 general elections witnessed late arrival of election materials from South Africa in April of that year, contributing to denying millions of voters their right to political participation.”

“SERAP also notes that the 2011 general election suffered the same organizational lapses, with the elections postponed for two days after it had commenced. In 2015, the government of former president Goodluck Jonathan postponed the election for six weeks on the pretext that it needed time to reclaim the local governments reportedly taken over by the Boko Haram terrorist group.”

“The INEC on the morning of the elections shifted presidential and National Assembly elections to 23rd February, 2019. The Governorship, State House of Assembly and the FCT Area Council Elections are to hold on 9th March, 2019.”

The Nigerian Army female team has emerged the overall first winner of the third edition of the West African Military Semi-Marathon Tournament that took place at Niamey, Niger Republic.

The men’s team won the third position at event on Saturday.

The Semi- Marathon Event which was organised by the Niger Republic Defence Headquarters in conjunction with the West African Military Sports Organisation, featured male and female participants.

According to Colonel Sagir Musa, the army spokesman, the marathon was organised to build friendship amongst the militaries of the West African region.

In the Female Individual Events, LCpl Naomi Yunana won the gold medal, while Pte Amos Unity got Silver .

The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai has congratulated the team on the feat achieved, Sagir Musa said.

Election Observation Missions of the European Union (EU), African Union (AU), United Nations (UN) and others have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to finalise all preparations and ensure that the new election dates are adhered to.

They said this in a joint statement signed by eight organisations and made available to the Naija Politico on Saturday, in light of the postponement of the general elections.

Other signatories to the statement are the election observation missions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Commonwealth Observer Group and the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa.

Some others are the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the National Democratic Institute/International Republican Institute.

They also said that INEC should provide regular updates and information to the public on its preparations in the coming days and weeks to enhance confidence and trust in the process.

The observers also called on Nigerians to remain calm and support the electoral process.

We, the Heads of the international election observation missions and the United Nations present in Nigeria, have taken note of the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the 2019 general elections due to logistical and operational challenges.

While we note that this decision has caused disappointment for many, we call on all Nigerians to continue to remain calm and supportive of the electoral process as INEC works to implement its new timeline.

We urge INEC to use this time to finalise all preparations and ensure that the new election dates are strictly adhered to. We encourage INEC to provide regular updates and information to the public on its preparations in the coming days and weeks to enhance confidence and trust in the process.

A Legal Practitioner, Mr Kayode Ajulo, has demanded compensation of free fuel to all Nigerians over the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Ajulo stated this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Saturday.

He said that the Federal Government through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must compensate Nigerians for wasting resources and energy to travel to their various polling units to cast their vote.

According to him, I traveled to Cardive in America few weeks ago and a certain road was closed without the knowledge of the citizenry, the government had to compensate them with five litres of fuel.

He said that the postponement was a technical disenfranchisement that only the presidency could reverse by providing palliative measures in form of free fuel flows to voters.

He said that an arbitrary predilection for unpleasant surprises, the INEC has made Feb. 16th into a national day of ‘April Fool’.

“INEC’s decision to suspend at the eleventh hour, the Presidential and National Assembly elections long billed for today has thrown a crooked wrench in the plans and schedule of several million of voters all over the country”

He stated that the election meant taking trips away from primary states of residence and commerce to polling units in other states to participate in the election.

According to him, schedules were disrupted, families uprooted and finances invested in the bid to exercise franchise and execute the civic duty owed by the registered citizenry to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said that the dilemma for more than a few families and individuals at the moment would be to making a decision between maintaining their locations or heading back to their respective businesses and abode.

Ajulo noted that INEC must be seen to keep its words, adding that a second postponement could have dire implications for it and bleed it of public faith and trust.

HLSI Security Firms and Technologies, an Israeli firm has denied media reports that the company was paid to jam networks on election day.

The company in a statement issued on Saturday and made available to Naija Politico described the allegation as malicious, stressing that the company was a reputable one.

Media reports had suggested that the All Progressives Congress (APC), through the minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, paid the firm to jam networks on election day.

In the statement, the organisation said it had operated in Nigeria for over 12 years within which time it had not been involved or accused of any action that lacked integrity.

It said that the report and its timing clearly showed malice and the firm therefore urged the public to disregard the allegation.

“The timing of this recycled fiction clearly exposes the intention of those behind it. Undoubtedly, they are those who think that the best way to divert attention from the issues of the day is to fabricate misleading stories few hours to the election.

“Their aims are malicious as they are agents of distortion. We will not be distracted. We know who they are, and they know themselves.

“As professionals we try our best not to interfere with domestic political issues in countries where we operate. We have been working in this country for more than twelve years and at no time have we been accused of any form of integrity deficit.

“The status of our firm has been verified over and again and we were never found wanting. Our records in this regard speak for themselves.

“It must be noted that while elections come and go, we will not allow these merchants of mischief to create imaginary baggage on our hard-earned global reputation.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and we will not hesitate to use necessary legal means to defend ourselves.

For avoidance of doubts, the company added that the contract which purpose was maliciously twisted was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The company added that the contract did not breach any law in Nigeria, neither does it affect the nation’s internal security.

“We are happy to release all relevant details that confirm for instance that there is no component of this project that has anything to do with telecommunications not to talk of contemplating jamming telephone signals.

“Again, those who are peddling these obsolete lies are unpatriotic elements whose sole aim is to cause panic and fear among the public.

The public should be aware and ignore them as nothing like that is being contemplated to the best of our knowledge.”

WE CONDEMN THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE ELECTIONS, BUT URGE OUR TEEMING SUPPORTERS TO BE PATIENT AND DETERMINED

We have just received with great disappointment and disillusionment the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its decision to postpone the Presidential/National Assembly and Gubernatorial/House of Assembly Elections to Saturday, February 23, 2019 and Saturday, March 9, 2019, respectively.

We condemn and deprecate this tardiness of the electoral umpire in the strongest terms possible. President Muhammadu Buhari had since cooperated fully with INEC by ensuring EVERYTHING it demanded to conduct free and fair elections were promptly made available to it. This news is therefore a huge disappointment to us and to our teeming supporters nationwide and around the world, many of whom have come into the country to exercise their franchise.

We do hope that INEC will remain neutral and impartial in this process as the rumor mill is agog with the suggestion that this postponement has been orchestrated in collusion with the main opposition, the PDP, that was NEVER ready for this election. We note that all the major credible demographic projections have predicted a defeat of the PDP and it seriously needed this breather to orchestrate more devious strategies to try and halt President Buhari’s momentum. It did the same as the ruling Party in 2015, when it realized the game was up, by orchestrating the postponement of the 2015 elections by six weeks. Now, it may be up to its old trick again.

We have earlier raised the alarm that the PDP is bent on discrediting this process the moment it realized it cannot make up the numbers to win this election. We are only urging INEC not collude with the PDP on this. We are truly worried because as early as Friday morning, some known PDP Social Media influencers unwittingly announced this postponement, but quickly deleted the message and apologized to the public that it was fake news. We do not want to be forced to a situation of announcing our total loss of confidence in INEC, because we know where that would leave our democracy.

It is in the light of the above that we wish to appeal to Nigerians and our supporters to be patient, calm and resolute despite this temporary setback. Let us not give anyone, especially the PDP, the opportunity to plunge this nation into a crises, which is what they earnestly desire. Its imminent defeat is just a few days away.

Lastly, we wish to draw the attention of INEC and the world to observe that the PDP has clearly and openly said it plans to announce parallel results through some funny device it has procured or developed. We wish to re-iterate that it is ONLY INEC that is legally and constitutionally empowered to declare results and it constitutes an offence for anyone to do so. We urge INEC to SPEAK UP NOW and warn the PDP to desist from this ignoble act that is capable of plunging the nation into a crises of immeasurable proportions.

INEC chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu: announces postponement of the presidential election
The Independent National Electoral Commission has decided to shift Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections till next week 23 February.

The governorship and house of assembly, FCT area council elections have also been shifted from 2 March to 9 March.

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu confirmed NAN report of the shift of the presidential election, attributing the postponement of all the scheduled elections to logistic and operational problems.

He said the postponement will afford the commission the opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of Nigeria’s elections.

The postponement of the election came after more than six hours of meeting between INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu and 12 national commissioners in Abuja.

The meeting, which began Friday evening ended early on Saturday.

Professor Yakubu said the INEC will be meeting all stakeholders at 2pm on Saturday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja to explain the commission’s position.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, the chief press secretary to the INEC chairman had hinted newsmen earlier that some decisions about the election had been reached and that the decision would be communicated later.

“I can confirm to you that the INEC Chairman and the 12 national commissioners are in the meeting.

” Decisions have been taken and you will be addressed later,” Oyekanmi said.

Presidential and National Assembly elections were scheduled to take place throughout the country today, while governorship and state assembly elections were slated for 2 March.

The national elections are expected to hold at 119,973 polling units across the country while collation of results will take place in 8,809 Registration Areas or Wards, 774 Local Government Areas and 36 States and the FCT.

It will not be the first time that the commission would postpone a scheduled general election.

In 2015, the presidential election was shifted from February 14 to March 28th, 2015; while the governorship and assembly elections scheduled for 28 February were shifted to 11 April.

The presidential candidate of the Sustainable National Party (SNP), Ahmed Buhari, has finally withdrawn from the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Buhari made his decision known in an interview with SUNRISE daily, a breakfast show on Channels Television.

The decision may have come as a shock to his followers as he said his stepping down from the race was to drum support for All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Ahmed Buhari, he is stepping down from the race because he believes that president Buhari is the right man for the job.

He noted that the Buhari government has also made some gains in the last four years it came on board in the country.

The former SNP presidential candidate accused Nigerian youths of not backing young persons for the presidency.

He regretted his lack of resources to compete with the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Naija Politico recalls that Ahmed Buhari was once a member of the main opposition PDP but left for the SNP to fulfill his dream of becoming the country’s leader.

Meanwhile, Kingsley Nwagu, the Vice Presidential candidate of the SNP has distanced himself from the decision of his presidential candidate to support President Buhari.

Nwagu told the NAN in a telephone interview that Ahmed Buhari was alone in his decision and that the party had replaced his with Jaiye Gasikiya who was the runner-up during the presidential primary election.

“We are still in the race; Ahmed Buhari acted on his own without the party’s consent, so, as it is, the party has not adopted any candidate neither will it adopt.

“But if it will, it is left for the party to decide; we have already written to INEC and we are elevating Jaiye Gaskiya who contested primary election with Ahmed Buhari.

“INEC is yet to respond to our letter notifying them of the development in the party, and we expect a positive response from them.

“As it is, the ballot papers carry only the parties’ logo and as such we are calling on all our members nationwide to still thumbprint on our party logo,” Nwagu said.

Feb. 16 presidential race would see President Buhari of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and over 50 other aspirants slugging it out for the country’s number one seat.

The European Commission has added Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Panama and other jurisdictions to a blacklist of nations that pose a threat because of lax controls on terrorism financing and money laundering, the EU executive said on Wednesday.

The move is part of a crackdown against money laundering after several scandals hit EU banks in recent months. But it has triggered criticism from several EU states worried about their economic relations with the listed states, notably Saudi Arabia.

Criteria used to blacklist countries include low sanctions against money laundering and terrorism financing, insufficient cooperation with the EU on the matter and lack of transparency over the beneficial owners of companies and trusts.

Five of the listed countries are already included on a separate EU blacklist of tax havens. They are Samoa, Trinidad and Tobago and the three US territories of American Samoa, Guam and US Virgin Islands.

The Saudi government media office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Panama said it should be removed from the list because it recently adopted stronger rules against money laundering.

Despite pressure to exclude Riyadh from the list, the commission decided to list the kingdom, confirming a Reuters report in January..

Apart from reputational damage, inclusion on the list complicates financial relations with the EU. The bloc’s banks will have to carry out additional checks on payments involving entities from listed jurisdictions.

The list now includes 23 jurisdictions, up from 16. The commission said it added jurisdictions with “strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering and countering terrorist financing regimes”.

Brussels also added to its list Libya, Botswana, Ghana, Samoa, the Bahamas and the four United States territories of American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam.

The other listed states are Afghanistan, North Korea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia and Yemen.

Bosnia Herzegovina, Guyana, Laos, Uganda and Vanuatu were removed.

The 28 EU states now have one month, which can be extended to two, to endorse the list. They could reject it by qualified majority. EU justice commissioner Vera Jourova, who proposed the list, told a news conference she was confident states would not block it.
