CrimeNAPTIP To Rescue 20,000 Nigerian Girls Trafficked For Sexual Slavery In Mali by chieyine(op): 2:35pm On Jan 19, 2019
@Naija Politico

Trafficking in human person is a criminal offence in our laws and greatly frowned at by the United Nations.

It was recently discovered by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) that about 20,000 Nigerian girls are trapped in different parts of Mali, though efforts are being made to rescue them.

This statement was made known in an interview on Saturday, in Abuja, by Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, the Director- General of NAPTIP, who said that the victims were trapped in different parts of Mali, basically for prostitution.

The trafficked victims were discovered after NAPTIP sent a fact-finding mission to Mali last December, following some security reports, Okah-Donli further said.

”We sent a fact-finding mission to Mali last month and the mission came with a report that, about 20,000 Nigerian girls had been trafficked to different parts of Mali.

“Many of the girls said that they were deceived that, they were being taken to ” “Malisia”, making it sound like Malaysia, to work in hotels, restaurants, hairdressing salons and some other jobs.

“Some of the girls arrived there in their school uniforms, meaning that they were kidnapped on their way to or from school,” she asserted.

The living condition of this girl’s was horrible as some of the girls were sold for as high as #600,000 and were made to service mainly miners, NAPTIP boss said.

“There are over one million Nigerians residents in Mali, out of which about 20,000 are trapped into forced prostitution.

“The conditions are horrible; they are kept in shanties in the thick of the forest where they cannot escape and with the “madames” watching over them.

“Their job, mainly, is to service miners from other parts of Africa who are predominant in Northern Mali.

“They are bought for N600, 000 and they are made to pay back N1.8million or N2million within six months before regaining freedom and also becoming madams.” she said.

The Nigerian authorities were collaborating with their Malian counter parts as well as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), to rescue and rehabilitate the victims, most of whom were eager to return, she assured Nigerians.

Ahe puts it thus; “most of the girls are desirous of returning home and we are working with the IOM, the Malian government and the Nigerian Embassy in Mali to see how we can repatriate them.

“Our plan is to rehabilitate them immediately they return home, we will have rehabilitation programme on ground before they are repatriated.”

She further urged Nigerians to be extremely vigilant as trafficking of the girl child increased over by 500 girls daily.

“Trafficking increases by at least, 500 girls daily, they bring them in their hundreds and now, they waybill them through well known motor parks in Cotonou.

“It also cuts across all 36 states of Nigeria and happens all over the world. It is no longer about the Edo girls being trafficked to Italy.

“I urge Nigerians to be alert and sensitive about their surroundings; they should report suspicious movements to the authorities, especially at our border posts.” she concluded.

PoliticsPresidency: Bandits Attack In Sokoto, Evil, Thoughtless, And Condemnable by chieyine(op): 8:39am On Jan 16, 2019
@Naija Politico

The latest attack by bandits in Sokoto State has been described by President Muhammadu Buhari as “utterly evil, callous, reckless, thoughtless and reprehensible”
The attack which occurred in the Bandi District of Rabàh Local Government, reports says had claimed the lives of no fewer than 30 person’s.

The Senior Special Assistant to the the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, on Tuesday, in Abuja, said that the President was shocked and saddened by the latest violence now prevailing in the state.

He went further to say that it is highly unaceptable for murderous thugs to threaten or kill innocent and defenceless villagers.

President Buhari also stated thus; “My administration is leaving no stone unturned to track down these mass murderers and bring them to justice,’’

In order that the country be rid off senseless killings and criminal activities, President Buhari issued a firm instruction to the new acting AIG, Abubakar Adamu that he quickly puts on operation a joint operation of the force.

In an attempt to cleanse the forest of criminal elements, he approved meetings between security and defence officials of Nigeria and Niger Republic.

“Let me reassure the people of Sokoto State and other parts of the country facing security challenges that no citizen will be abandoned to their fate.

“Security occupies the centre stage of my administration’s policies, and this commitment is being pursued with more vigour as we make efforts to provide more equipment to our security personnel to enable them perform the task effectively.’’ he further reassured.

The President reassured the people of Sokoto and consoled the families of the victims saying that “criminals won’t be allowed to hold the citizens to ransom and that poverty is no excuse for any group to take up arms against innocent people and kill them in cold blood.”

Foreign AffairsPetrol Now N1,204 Per Litre From #480 In Zimbabwe by chieyine(op): 4:33pm On Jan 13, 2019
@Naija Politico

A massive hike of 240 per cent in the prices of petrol and diesel goes into effect today in Zimbabwe.

Petrol was selling for 1.32 dollars (N481) per litre before Sunday’s hike. Now, it will be sold at $3.31 per litre.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced the increases Saturday night.

He said the prices were predicated on the prevailing rate of 1:1 between the U.S. dollar and the surrogate bond note.

Mnangagwa revealed the increases to journalists at the State House ahead of his tour of Eastern Europe and Switzerland.

He said: “The government has today decided on the following corrective measures, with effect from midnight tonight, fuel pump price of $3.11 per litre for diesel and $3.31 for petrol will come into effect.” (In naira terms petrol is N1204 per litre and diesel N1135).

“Guests of government by way of foreign missions, other registered foreign bodies and tourists will fuel and refuel at designated points at the price of 1.24 U.S. dollars per litre for diesel and 1.32 U.S. dollars per litre for petrol upon production of proper identification documents,” Mnangagwa said.

The fuel price increases coincided with government’s decision that the country will have its own currency within 12 months, thus jettisoning the US dollar.

Zimbabwean Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube said adopting the U.S. dollar or the South African rand would not solve the country’s macro-economic problems.

Asked to give a timeline on when local currency would be reintroduced, Ncube said it would be done “in less than 12 months.”

He said separating the parity between Real Time Gross Settlement accounts (RTGS) and foreign currency accounts (FCA) was the beginning of currency reforms which are necessary for pushing the country’s economy in the right direction.

“Our job is to introduce a currency that will be stable and less volatile. Dealing with the fiscal side is the first order to move towards a stable currency,” Ncube said.

Zimbabwe adopted the use of multi-currencies in 2009 after its local currency had been rendered worthless by hyperinflation.

To relieve cash shortages, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe introduced the bond note in late 2016.

Initially pegged at 1:1 against the U.S. dollar when it was introduced, the bond note, however, has gradually lost value against the real currency and is now trading at about one-third the value of the U.S. dollar.

PoliticsSaraki Demands Due Process In Move To Try Onnoghen by chieyine(op): 3:26pm On Jan 13, 2019
@Naija Politico

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has advised the Federal Government to ensure that its plans to put on trial the nation’s chief judicial officer, Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen, follows due process.

Saraki in a statement in Ilorin on Sunday and made available to Naija Politico noted that he believes that if the Government truly has genuine reason to put the incumbent CJN on trial, it should ensure that every step in the process is transparent.

He stressed that the process should be that as clearly stipulated by the law, warning that the government must ensure that the planned trial does not cause chaos in the judicial system.

“A situation where the petition which triggered the trial was submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) on Wednesday January 8 and by January 10 on Friday, the Chief Justice was presented with it for his reply only for the charges to be drafted that same day and filed in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), all this taking place within three days and commencement of trial fixed for Monday, January 14, already indicate unnecessary haste and short-circuiting of the process of fair hearing.

“It is important for the government and members of the public to know that as somebody who has traveled this route before, we should refrain from any media trial and political players should avoid abusing the judicial process in order to achieve what they could not get through normal political contests.

“Every body who is being tried should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. That is the underlining principle of our justice system.

“The proposed trial of the CJN has once again opened up the debate on the transparency and neutrality of the fight against corruption,” he said.

Saraki expressed grave worry at the haste with which the trial was put up, stressing that only three working days from petition to trial gives room for great concerns.

He stressed that the haste is more worrisome especially considering that there are other pending cases where the individuals involved have been indicted for months and they were yet to be tried or scheduled for trial.

While noting that the anti-corruption fight has become a case of a separate rule for the people close to the executive branch and another set of rules for the rest of Nigerians, the Senate President stated that the fight has been compromised and politicized.

“All these subjective actions politicize the anti-graft fight. They weaken national institutions. They send wrong signals.

“The CJN is not above the law but his trial puts the entire judicial system on trial. It sends a signal to the entire world about our judiciary. It has implications for the confidence of local and foreign investors about the system of adjudication over disputes in our country.

“Thus, the matter should be handled with care, demonstrating intense transparency and strict adherence to due process,” he said.

He added that the entire country and the international community will be watching closely every step in this trial.

Basically APC just copied a manifesto made for Americans and used it as their manifesto without remembering to remove "America"
This isnt the first time such is happening.
Is it that there was no money allocated to brainstorming ideas to use for the manifesto?
Or that the money budgeted for such brainstorming was embezzled and someone's intellectual property stolen?
Or that they are bereft of ideas of the Problems Nigerians face on a daily basis?

BusinessWage: Labour, FG Make Progress, Suspends Strike Action by chieyine(op):
The National Labout Congress President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, has confirmed that the NLC had a meaningful discussion with the federal Government on Tuesday, he promised another meeting will hold on Wednesday where talks about the new national minimum wage will be finalized.

Mr Ayuba Wabba said that labour leaders had agreed to meet with the Federal government on Wednesday by 1p.m to ensure smooth transmission of the minimum wage bill without delay.

We will still go ahead with the planned mass protest on Wednesday, the labour leader declared

The protest will about the implementation of the new minimum wage and has no bearing to its transmission though we are still looking at how it will be transmitted to the Hallow Chambers.

According to the NLC President, Mr Ayuba, this is a protest and not a strike action and the principal reason for the protest is to get all parties involved in the new minimum wage committed to the cause, it is different from the Bill transmission to the National Assembly, he added.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, said that the closed door meeting with labour on Tuesday was in the Positive and by Wednesday, the date of transmission to the National Assembly will be made known.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labout Congress threatened to embark on a nationwide protest, if by January 8th, the Federal Government fails to transmit the bill on new national minimum wage to the National Assembly.

The NLC gave the threat following President Buhari’s statement that a “high powered technical committee” would be set up to make sure that the new minimum wage implementation would not lead to an increase in borrowing.

Because there are processes to be followed on the Bill, it has been difficult to arrive at a specific date.

“We have to go to the Federal Executive Council with a council memo on the bill after that, we will go to the National Economic Council and the Council of State.

“But for the Council of State, the President has to look at his own time table and we will inform past Heads of State and Justice of the Federation. This can take two weeks.

“However, we are trying to see if we can accommodate all these meetings by next week because we cannot do Council of State meeting again this week.

“Immediately after that meeting (Council of State), we will transmit the bill,” he said.

Naija Politico reports that the meeting started about 9:05 p.m and ended at 12:00 a.m on Tuesday

PoliticsAtiku Promises To Complete Ajaokuta Steel, Other Moribund Projects by chieyine(op): 6:07am On Jan 08, 2019
@Naija Politico

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has promised to complete the Ajaokuta Steel Company and other abandoned projects of President Buhari’s administration if elected President come February 16th.

Naija Politico learnt that the former Vice President made this known in Lokoja yesterday where he said that if elected President, his first agenda will be to tackle the monumental rate of unemployment amongst youths in Nigeria. Atiku criticized the governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, for his inability to pay workers their salary and pensioners their pension, a development he claimed was synonymous in APC-controlled states.

According to him, Ajaokuta Steel Mill and Geregu Power Station are PDP's legacy and if you elect me as your President, we will complete all abandoned projects.
He said that unemployment rate is astronomically so high now; his next programme will be the creation of jobs.

He promises to create as many jobs as possible and complete all the inland ports, convert all the natural resources (which Kogi have in abundance) into tangible resources that will bring development.”

Governor Bello can't even pay the salary of workers, not even pensioners and as such, we will correct that mistake. He accepted that he was part of the mistake but he has retraced his step and as such, such mistakes will definitely be corrected.

The Director-General of Atiku Campaign Council who also doubles as The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki had earlier said with pride that PDP would defeat the incumbent APC at the February 16th election.

According to Dr Bukola Saraki, “all major stakeholders in Kogi are currently in PDP, and where the majority are, there God is. This means that God is with the people.

According to the Senate President, Nigeria wasn't born to suffer like this. Poverty, hunger together with insecurity plague the country. If the people of Kogi wants more hunger to ravage them, they should vote for Buhari, but if they want the hunger to stop together with economic peace and prosperity, they should vote for Atiku

Also present at the rally were former governors of Kogi, Ibrahim Idris and Idris Wada who called on Kogites to vote for PDP in all elections in the State.

The rally at regular intervals called for the release of the fiery senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye who was arrested eight days ago by the police after an eight day siege at his residence.

Politics2019: PDP Speaks On Atiku Stepping Down, Buhari Losing 2019 Election by chieyine(op): 11:00am On Jan 07, 2019
@Naija Politico

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, PPCO, has reacted to call by Festus Keyamo that its Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar should step down for President Buhari in the upcoming presidential election this February.

Festus Keyamo, the Spokesperson of President Buhari Campaign Organization had challenged PDP Presidential Candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to step down and endorse the incumbent President.

However, Kola Ologbondiyan the PPCO Spokesperson said with the massive support Alhaji Atiku enjoys, he can’t step down.

Kola Ologbondiyan spoke during a press conference, on Sunday and made available to Naija Politico, he said that Buhari shouldn’t set Nigeria on fire because he won’t be the first President to be defeated.

Accord to Ologbondiyan, “We want the Buhari Presidency to note that it is preposterous for anybody, no matter how highly placed, to think that our great party, the PDP and our Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who enjoys the support of overwhelming majority of Nigerians, can be subdued out of the political space in our country.

“Our heroes past fought against colonialism and won. Our modern heroes fought the military and gained today’s democracy for our nation so that every Nigerian can enjoy freedoms and rights as guaranteed in the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Nigerians are therefore not ready to surrender these freedoms and rights to neo-totalitarianism or allow anybody to suppress them in their own land.

“We therefore counsel President Buhari to tame his desperation for power. Our nation has had many Presidents before President Buhari and there will be many more after him.

“President Buhari will not be the first President to be defeated in an election as such he should not set our nation on fire just because he is feeling the air of rejection due to his incompetence and the gale of corruption in his administration.

“Our party is courageously going into the general elections with the support of overwhelming majority of Nigerians and they are not ready to accept any result that does not reflect their already expressed wishes
and aspirations.”

NANS as we all know means National Association of Nigerian Students and according to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, A student is a person who is studying at a university or other place of higher education.
As such, we expect NANS leadership to come from students currently studying but what we have are people who delay going for the compulsory National Youth Service to as much as 5years in order to occupy NANS leadership position and as such preventing current students from occupying such positions
"According to NANS charter of demand, for undergraduates, you are a student until you go for your NYSC" but according to general meaning of students, their definition is as faulty as can be imagined.
I was shocked when I heard NANS writing to the Federal Government to be part of the negotiation between The FG and ASUU and I had to scrutinize the leadership of NANS.
It was shocking that all Major Exco in NANS are not students but one is tempted to ask

1. Why are all the excos of NANS not students still in school?
2. Since this people are not students, who gave non students the authority to speak for students?
3. Can a labourer negotiate wages for a banker? Why are they negotiating with the government?
4. I haven't read anywhere of NANS leadership meeting with ASUU to chart a way forward concerning the strike but they are more interested in meeting the FG. Is the purported meeting for students or for themselves
5. They claim to fight for students but the last time I heard about NANS standing on their feet and making their demands known was during the military regime. But this current crop, adorn their cars with NANS plate number.
One is left perplexed trying to decipher the source of livelihood of graduated students who have neither gone for NYSC nor are working.
I am a member of University of Nigeria Medical Students Association(UNMSA) and we have our National body called Nigeria Medical Students Association(NiMSA) and the members of these associations are strictly students who are still in school and does not include those who are looking for placement for their housemanship, you cannot go for NYSC without doing your housemanship.

Then why is that of NANS different?

I plead with President Buhari that this current crop of NANS do not represent The Nigerian Students and as such shouldn't be negotiated with or called to the Negotiation table.
And if our cars should get spoilt and we take it to the mechanic workshop, we do not negotiate with the apprentice without the Express approval of the main mechanic.
The FG should go back to the meeting table with ASUU and iron out their differences.

The governor made the disclosure in a statement signed by Mr Mark Longyen, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity on Tuesday in Jos and made available to Naija Politico.

“The decision was taken after consultation with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

“It is in exercise of the powers conferred on the governor under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“The sentences of three of the convicts were commuted to absolute pardon, while the third convict had his life sentence commuted to 21 years imprisonment,” he said.

According to the statement, Abdullahi Musa, Rev. Samson Bisat and Chikwu Anadi were granted absolute pardon while Emmanuel Ochiba who was sentenced to life imprisonment has been commuted to 21 years jail term.”

Lalong called on the people of the state and the Nation at large to commit the year 2019 to sobriety, penance and forgiveness.

He urged them to pray fervently for divine intervention in the affairs of Plateau and Nigeria.
