Hi Guys

I am in the process of getting a car and I am torn between these choices

Toyota Camry SE 2010 (Tokunbo) - 2.5M

Toyota Rav4 2011 (Naija Used) - 2.3 M (I know the history of the car as the owner is a personal friend)

Hyundai Sonata 2011/2013 (Tokunbo) - 2.4M

Please I would appreciate objective reviews and advice for these cars so I can make informed decision. I will be in the comments below

Thank you.

Thanks for this, its quite informative.

In addition to the P0420 error code, there was also an Engine misfire code which I guess is responsible for the P0420 error code.
CarMecx:
P0420 code definition
Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What the P0420 code means
The purpose of the catalytic converter is to break down harmful pollutants that are created during the combustion cycle. By using fine platinum and gold meshes to filter exhaust fumes, the catalytic converter is able to reduce the emissions expelled from the exhaust pipe.

The catalytic converter has two oxygen sensors. One oxygen sensor is positioned in front (upstream) of the catalytic converter and the other oxygen sensor is positioned at the rear (downstream).

If the upstream oxygen sensor is working properly, its readings should fluctuate from when the car is at operating temperature and when running in a closed loop. If the downstream oxygen sensor is working properly, and there isn't an issue with the catalytic converter, its readings should remain steady.

When the oxygen sensors have readings that are similar to each other, it is an indication that the catalytic converter is not working as intended. If the voltage of the downstream oxygen sensor decreases, and begins to fluctuate like the upstream oxygen sensor, it means that the oxygen levels are too high and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will store the P0420 trouble code.

Catalytic converters are not normally a "wear" type item, that is they are not designed to wear out and need replacement. If they have failed, it is likely due to something else that caused it to fail. This is what a P0420 means in simplified terms.

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting and fixing a P0420 error code include:

Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.

check the oxygen sensor- The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).

Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor, replace if necessary

Replace the catalytic converter (last thing to check)

nurey:
WHAT IS A CATALYST

The car catalyst turns harmful gases going out of the engine into environmental gases. It contains special metals that reacts easily with harmful gases produced.

overtime catalyst breaks down and may block the passage way of the exhaust causing buildup which may lead to engine failure. later designs were done to breakup and disperse out through the exhaust

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN CATALYST FAILS
if the mechanic checks and says catalyst has failed never allow him to build anything that looks like catalyst because they use substandard materials which later breakdown into particles eventually blocking the exhaust passage and back to square 1 or worse frying pan to fire (total destruction/disintegration of engine)

WHAT CAN I DO THEN WHEN CATALYST FAILS?
The best and most appropriate thing to do is buy a brand new OEM replacement for the vehicle in question

or
if a catalyst replacement is too expensive weld a straight pipe to replace the pot of the catalyst then buy oxygen sensor defouler (cost 5k each) and weld to the exhaust pipe before bolting the oxygen sensor. so the amount of oxygen sensor would determine the among of the defouler you will buy. With that you won't have error codes associated with oxygen sensor which can lead to increased fuel economy.
the downside to this is harmful gases would be released to the environment.

Hi Guys, I did a scan on my 2009 Corolla S and it gave a P0420 Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). The Mech recommended I replace the catalyst (indomie) which he gave me a quote of 85K for original one. While another one that can fit is 45K (this is not the follow come according to him).

Another option is for him to remove it and when I have the funds, he will buy another one and put it. He said the engine may be affectted because it is not breathing well due to the bad catalyst. The implication of removing the catalyst is higher fuel consumption from what he said.

I don't have 85K to cough out in the PMB's era, and I am not too clear on the implications of taking out the catalyst.

Please the gurus in the house I need the following clarifications

1. How much does the original Catalyst for 2009 Corolla S cost?
2. Is the "worked one" a good replacement part instead of the follow come?
3. What is the impact on my fuel consumption if the catalyst is removed?
4. Can the catalyst be repaired? (I saw a video on Youtube by Scotty Kilmer where it was soaked and washed overnight and it was restored to performance)
5. Any reliable mechanic in Abuja should also indicate so I can get a second professional opinion

Hello house, please I need your help.

I just got a Nigerian used Toyota 2009 Corolla and my first day of driving it and I noticed the Oil light flickering (flashing) with noisy sound coming from the Engine. I checked oil gauge and it was at normal level, the light and noise comes up at low speed. When I restart the car, it goes away but comes on again when I brake or slow down.
The mechanic says its the oil pump that is bad and it needs replacement. I called the former owner and she said the oil pump was changed three months ago.

Please the experts in the house, what could be the cause and how can this be fixed. I will appreciate concrete solutions. Thanks
Experts based in Abuja should also indicate.
Car TalkRe: Car Buying Advice!!! by chikenicholas(op): 10:52am On Aug 06, 2018
It was a cool car and simple car to own. I drove the I4 engine.

The major issue I have had with it is overheating and constant oil shortage. The first overheating it had resulted in change of top gasket and radiator. The second and third one was as a result of bad fan which I changed before selling it.

In terms of fuel consumption, I think its moderate but it can be better for a 2.4L engine. I do an average of 8.6Kilometre per Litre for consumption.

The parts are easily available and I spend about 8K every 2months for servicing. But it requires topping-up engine oil in between maintenance as it was always burning oil with no oil leak on the engine bay

Another issue is the legs (shaft) and suspension. They said its a normal issue with the car because of the bulk/size

Overall I think it was a decent car, it handles well and wasn't problematic. I sold it out of compulsion and need to upgrade.

I hope this helps

Thanks for your input the Camry is an i4 decent and very clean the only difference I see with the XLE and other trims is only Formica and leather seat which I can upgrade mine too anytime my Concern also is the value of muscle dropping really fast now In the market. I was at my friend car stand yesterday he had an 08 he was ready to sell for 2.3 very neat he said reason is the market has been saturated with Camry and Corolla that all car stands had at least like 3 or more of them. I have picture of mine which is really neat

Hi Guys

I sold my 2003 Toyota camry and want to buy a replacement. The car is for commuting to work daily within Abuja. Please advice on which car offers fuel economy and performance as well. My budget is 1.8M - 2M and most preferable a 2008 car upwards. I don't mind a neatly used naija car.

Please advice a brother
Car TalkCar Buying Advice!!! by chikenicholas(op):
Hello Fellow NLers, straight to the point. I need advice on what car to buy, please valuable advice is needed and will be appreciated.

Background
I recently sold my Toyota Big for Nothing (2003 Camry) and currently in the car market for a replacement. The car is for commuting to/fro work in Abuja (Lugbe to Central Area). My road is fairly okay aside when I have to go to remote places for iskanchi grin. My budget is between 1.8M and 2m. Tokunbo most preferred but I don't mind a very neatly used car.

The car experts in the house should share their opinion and recommendations on any of the car below

Toyota Corolla (2008 - 2012) - my concern is that it may be above my budget.

Toyota Matrix (2009 - 2012) - I like the look but noticed its not common and also concerned on the resale value

Toyota Camry (2007 - 2012) SE or XLE in I4 engine most preferred - the size is my concern

Honda Accord (2010 - ) - I love the interior of this car but concerned about the maintenance. The resale value is also low.

Avensis - I don't know much about this car but I feel it looks very strong and seems reliable

Any other cool car not in this list should also be included. I need both fuel economy and performance combined. I'm going to respond to further enquiries if you need.

Also sellers in Abuja can also contact me

EducationRe: What Is The Hope Of Physics Students After Graduation? by chikenicholas(m): 10:10am On May 07, 2018
I am a physics graduate and I can understand how you currently feel considering I was in your position some years ago. Physics a great course of study but also highly demanding. Like mentioned by some people in this thread, you need to get a very high CGPA in whatever course of study to even stand a chance in the oversaturated job market in Nigeria.

To get good job opportunities, I will advice you aim for a 4.0 and above CGPA, this places you at an advantage and also considering your age (you should be graduating and finished service by the time you clock 24, hence you stand a better chance at applying for most graduate trainee positions (I am currently a mgt consultant in one of the big four and I came in through this process).

If your interest is in continuing the part of Physics, then you will need to further to MSc/PhD and the career path in Nigeria is mostly lecturing/teaching. Research is underfunded and underdeveloped in Nigeria, your best bet is going into the academia.

Also IT is currently booming in Nigeria, you may also continue to develop relevant IT skills and take professional certifications in this line to increase your prospects when you graduate.

But for now, I suggest you concentrate in your academics and aim to graduate with excellent grades. All the best in your studies.
