Pride, Politics And Law: Nigerian Senate versus Colonel Hammed Ali (1)
.................................................................................
The Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Retired Colonel Hammed Ali has of recent been enmeshed in an imbroglio with the Nigerian Senate over several issues of which first on the list is the introduction of a retroactive regulation on Motor Duty Import Tariffs by the Nigeria Customs Service such that will penalize and criminalize owners of old vehicles already in use for years in Nigeria. The punishment is not only limited to impounding of such vehicles but also to prosecuting the owners thereof.
The arguments proffered by the Nigeria Customs Service in coming up with this retroactive policy were that:
1. This policy if implemented will create ‘bad market’ for smugglers as members of the public will be deterred by fear of prosecution from patronizing them.
2. The policy will shore up the revenue of the Nigeria Customs Service which witnessed a sharp fall in 2016 as evidenced in their report in January 2017.
But these arguments were heavily flawed by superior reasonings to wit that:
1. Implementation of this policy will to a large extent, amount to an admission of failure of responsibility on the part of the Nigerian Customs Service in preventing smuggling,
2. Practical implementation of how this policy will work with men of Nigeria Customs Service whose primary stations of duty are the seaports, airports, land borders and sometimes the highways, will leave their duty-posts to enter the Nigerian streets to stop, search and demand customs papers from all vehicles plying our local roads is unfathomable,
3. The raison d’etre for such policy which essentially was to beef up the dwindling revenue of the Nigeria Customs Service betrays the ignorance of the leadership of the agency as to the real reason for their dwindling revenues which in this case was actually the effect of the new foreign exchange policy introduced by the Buhari administration which has made it difficult for importers to import goods as usual and pay their resultant tariffs thereby boosting the revenue of the Customs Service,
4. Whatever pecuniary gains the Nigeria Customs Service seeks to make from this anomalous policy will pale into oblivion when compared to the chaos and corruption its implementation will bring, as its implementation will create more personal enrichment opportunities for men of the Nigeria Customs Service who are widely and arguably known to be very corrupt.
Thankfully, good reasoning prevailed when the National Assembly through the Senate waded into the matter and invited the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service Col. Hammed Ali (Rtd) to come and expatiate more on the policy.

Instead of obeying the Senate’s invitation, the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service hurriedly convened a Customs Management meeting to coincide on the same day that he was invited to the Senate and used his attendance to that meeting as an excuse not to honour the invitation of the Senate. Immediately after the Customs Management meeting, the Nigeria Customs Service announced that its retroactive policy has been suspended to enable it clarify the Senate on its essence and to get the Senate’s full support for its implementation.

Hell bent on having the Controller General answer its invitation, the Senate wrote a second letter rejecting the excuse offered by the Controller General for not appearing before it on the day scheduled and further re-invited him and instructed him to appear before it in his official Customs Service uniform on the following day with a threat that a warrant for his arrest will be issued if he fails to turn up as expected.
On the following day, the Controller General showed up in the hallowed chambers of the Senate albeit without wearing his official uniform as the Controller General of Nigeria Custom Service and when queried by the Senate on why he was not appearing before it in uniform, the Controller General proffered two excuses which are...

If apostle Suleiman were innocent, he would have tendered his evidence to close this case. He could have had the girls arrested or sued. flying away to Washington does not proof the fire on his roof. this man is responsible for many of the allegations but i do not agree to all. it would have been easier if he had come out clean to confess. the matter would have died a long time ago. LiteratureAuthors Rights In Nigeria: The Journey With Repronig By Lawrence Nnoli by chilan(op): 11:02am On Mar 18, 2017
Not many Nigerians are aware that there is body licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Copyright Commission to take care of the rights of authors, photographers, computer programmers, columnists, brand designers, script writers and essayists hence this article.

The Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) is a collecting society licensed in 2001 by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to cater for the rights of authors of literary works. Literary works here include but not limited to books (fiction and non-fiction), journals, articles, photographs, computer programmes, periodicals, magazines, and newsletters and so the use of the word ‘authors’ is not limited to writers of books. Also, the word ‘authors’ is not limited to individual authors alone; it also includes associations of literary right holders and corporate owners of literary works.

Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) represents the interests of authors not only in Nigeria but in most countries of the world. This is possible because of its bilateral agreement with the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO) and other various foreign collecting societies who represent reproduction rights of authors in foreign nations.

PoliticsChristian Passivism: Gain Of Islamic Extremism By Lawrence Nnoli by chilan(op): 3:25pm On Feb 01, 2017
http://saharareporters.com/2017/01/30/christian-passivism-gain-islamic-extremism-lawrence-nnoli

I claim not to be a repository of God's knowledge and wisdom, but in my little wisdom, I strongly believe that Christians should not fold their hands and do nothing but look up to God to stem the huge tide of religious extermination facing them in Nigeria. For me, I think it is a mark of religious infantilism for Christians to adopt such a laid-back approach with respect to the subject of Christian defence in the face of Islamic extremism and genocidal activities by Islamic extremists.

An objective study of the Bible from the book of Genesis to the book of Revelation can guide an unbiased seeker to what God expects of his people (Christians) when faced with genocide. Several Biblical instances abound where God has shown us what our reaction should be in the face of strong opposition from opposite religions. As against the notion bandied about by some Christians that God expects us to hand our necks to those human demons and show them love instead, the questions arise then: Why didn’t God show love to Pharaoh and the Egyptians when Pharaoh started persecuting the Israelites to the point of death? Why did God have to give Pharaoh a hardened heart that would not accept Moses’ pleas to allow the Israelites leave Egypt in peace? In another instance, God instructed Joshua to be strong and fight God's fight against the heathen nations. Were those heathen nations not God’s creatures too? And yet God specifically instructed Joshua not to spare them. Is that not ‘too wicked’ of God to do that to his creatures? In another instance, God enabled the young David to kill Goliath the giant and wage numerous wars against the Philistines. And so goes on many instances where God not only approved retaliatory and offensive aggression against the enemies of his children (Christians) but in some cases actually instigated the aggression.

The bone of contention raised by the outburst of Apostle Johnson Suleiman a few days ago which has been viewed negatively by Moslems and even some Christians is that since Jesus Christ instructed Christians to love their enemies and do good to those that hate them as recorded in Matthew chapter 5 verse 44 and Luke chapter 6 verse 27, the call to self defence made by Apostle Suleiman is UNCHRISTLIKE. Indeed, nothing could be more hypocritical than that view.

The commandment of love for others by Jesus Christ was qualified. Jesus Christ commanded his followers (Christians) to love their neighbours as they love themselves and not otherwise. It therefore follows that if they cannot love themselves, they cannot love their neighbours, let alone their enemies. There is no disputing of the fact that one intrinsic, inherent and natural evident of love for one-self is self-preservation, also known as self-defence. All basic daily activities of a normal human being, ranging from routine body washing to career pursuits and even to religion, are founded on self-preservation against disease, poverty and eternal damnation, respectively. If that is the case, then it is also safe to deduce that one who loves himself will defend himself against harm and danger.

This laid-back approach to Christian defence in the face of Islamic extremism ignorantly seeks to portray Jesus Christ as only a God of love who will have nothing at all to do with violence. But this is false. Its falsity can be likened to that erroneous teaching of some Christian sect which postulates that God is too loving to send his creatures to hell. But we know that such beliefs are not true. If only the proponents of this laid-back approach to Christian defence should go and read of what Jesus did to people selling goods in the temple maybe they will have a re-think of the kind of personality Jesus Christ is. If Jesus Christ could use a whip to flog and chase away those that were selling in the temple, one wonders what he would have said to those that are condoning the maiming and killing of Christ’s beloved brethren in Northern Nigeria under the name of ‘love your enemies’.

A situation where Islamic extremists have waged war unabatedly against innocent Christian children, women and men and yet some Christians are saying we should do nothing to stem the devious tide does not only showcase timidity and lack of clear understanding of Biblical truths, it also showcases and reveals by a stretch of imagination their benign connivance with these Islamic extremists not only to harm the church of Christ in Nigeria but to exterminate the Christian faith from Nigeria.

It will not be out of place to surmise that in some Christian gatherings of late, some Christian leaders have started dissipating enormous energies preaching sermons blaming the cause of these mayhems on Christians themselves, pointing out their lack of prayer and evangelism as the reason for the gross massacre of adherents of the Christian faith in Nigeria. Some may have concluded that this mayhem has afforded true Christians an excellent opportunity to experience what the apostles of Jesus experienced in the hands of the ancient Roman empire in terms of persecution and for that reason they should rejoice because this will now birth the “revival” needed in the Christendom. Indeed ‘my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge’ says the scriptures in Hosea chapter 4 verse 6.

How have we come to this extent as Christians in Nigeria? The blame cannot solely be heaped on the men of God whose teachings encourages those laid-back approaches; the congregations also have a share to that blame because they have not only refused to study the Word of God by themselves, but they have refused to open their eyes to obvious numerous scenarios in the Bible and chosen rather to be led by the sleight of these men. For most of those congregations, everything they know about God and his ways were not what they read and studied for themselves in the Bible but by what their GO, GS, Bishop, Apostle, Prophet, Prophetess, Archbishop, Deacon, Deaconess, told them. This Christian age is the age where Christians are the most gullible people, especially in Nigeria.

May it be repeated for the umpteenth time that practising true Christianity is not practising foolishness; it is not practising self-defeatism. The Christian God that talked about love also talked against timidity. In second Timothy chapter 1 verse 7, Christians were reminded that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. It is the lack of this Biblical understanding that has given voice to these “love professing” Christians who would rather contend viciously with their fellow Christians on whether Christians should defend themselves or not instead of raising their voices to openly condemn and strongly denounced the activities of these Islamic extremists.

In the case of DSS versus Apostle Johnson Suleiman, let it be known and let the message be sent clear and loud to the Jihadists in Nigeria that Nigeria is not an Islamic nation where seemingly wrongs done to Moslems and the Islam faith are unpardonable yet wrongs done to Christians and the Christian faith can be swept under the carpet and nothing happens.

An unbiased and objective statistics of people slaughtered for their faith in Nigeria have shown that Christians in Nigeria, especially in the North, are fast becoming endangered specie because of the activities of Islamic extremists. Instances proving this assertion abound: from Chibok girls victims to Southern Kaduna killings, to Agatu massacre, to Suleja Catholic church bombing, to Nimbo farm saga etc. All these have unveiled the hidden but clear agenda by some people of the Islamic faith to decimate the population of Christians in Nigeria. For those doubting the accuracy of these claims, the questions have been and will always remain: Why must the people bombing, maiming, raping, murdering be all from one faith-Islam and yet no one has been sentenced and convicted in our courts? Why must the DSS and other law -enforcement and arms-bearing agencies suddenly jerked to life and remember their statutory duties when it comes to investigating so-called hate speeches against Islam and Moslems by Christians and yet do nothing when hundreds of thousands of Christians are murdered in cold blood? Why? Until these questions are honestly answered by the DSS, let them know that all their desperate conspiracies and activities to nail Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Bishop David Oyedepo, Bishop Ola Makinde and a host of other fearless clerics over fathom hate-speech allegations will be counter-productive.

Sometimes it is good to have a taste of the dish you serve others. This is one of the few world nobel laureates that veered off from their primary profession into national politics aligning himself with popular social crusades and criticizing successive Nigerian governments since late 70's. He has advocated for freedom of the press and people's liberty and rights of expression yet could not take in calmly, popular calls coming from people for him to honour his promise of tearing his US green card if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election. We know it does not lie justifiably on anybody’s mouth to force the man to fulfill his promise of tearing his US green card especially when that statement should ordinarily have been taken as one of those campaign stunts that politicians and their associates pull to win elections; however Mr. Soyinka's abrasive reactions to these innocuous calls from the social media seem to have sold him out as an intolerant and abusive fellow and one who not only lacks the essential pedigree of a social crusader but also the moral right to further criticize other men's actions.

Morenikeji, a 42 year old woman who comes from a wealthy family got married to Dotun 12 years ago. But unfortunately the marriage was childless. Apart from coming from a wealthy home, Morenikeji also has a very good job, while Dotun is just a civil servant. About 8 years ago, Morenikeji decided to buy a land and informed Dotun about it. Dotun suggested that they should buy the land in the name of the child they hope to have one day. They agreed on a name and bought the land with the name, and Morenikeji built a very beautiful house on it. That was how Dotun encouraged Morenikeji to buy many other properties in the name of the unborn child.
Dotun died in a car accident 2 weeks ago, and Morenikeji got the shock of her life when a woman came for the burial with 2 children that belongs to Dotun. The first child is almost 9 years old, and he bears the name Dotun gave Morenikeji's unborn child. The same name on all the properties which Dotun encouraged Morenikeji to buy.
Dotun's family are now trying to claim all the properties from Morenikeji. FRIENDS, PLEASE WHAT SHOULD SHE DOhuh This is a true life Story.( copied from Charis Olusola )

CelebritiesYinka Ayefele And Freshfm 105.9 Ibadan Under Criminal Investigation. by chilan(op): 12:39pm On Oct 25, 2016
A popular Nigerian music producer Yinka Ayefele and his radio station, Fresh FM 105.9 Ibadan are currently undergoing criminal investigation by the Nigerian Copyright Commission for copyright infringement of graphics design belonging to Abodunrin Opanuga. Abodunrin Opanuga is the CEO of Zattu Group which is a brand identity development company based in Lagos.
Sometime in July 2015, it was alleged that Yinka Ayefele contacted Abodunrin Opanuga through his general manager and asked him to design and develop the radio station’s brand system which involves logo design, motto conceptualization, advert and communications design materials.
Trouble started after Yinka Ayefele refused to pay Abodunrin Opanuga for the job done but went ahead to deploy the graphics designs for the use of his Radio station.
Yinka Ayefele runs the risk of going to jail if the Nigerian Copyright Commission files a criminal charge against him.

I bought a new Samsung phone for my Dad. The new phone uses a micro sim as against the big sim which his old phone uses. Because of this, he had to do a sim swap. After doing the sim swap at MTN office in Aba, MTN officials at the center told him the new micro sim cannot be activated until he offset the debt of Sixty-seven thousand naira (N67,000) accruing on that sim!

Up till then, the old sim has always been recharged and even had a credit of Six thousand, one hundred and nine naira (N6109). Never a time was he told that he is owing MTN.

He called MTN customer care number 180 and complained. The customer care officer on 180 told him his "debt" is not sixty-seven thousand naira (N67,000) but just four thousand, four hundred and ten naira,fifty-four kobo (N4410.54). He was told that once he recharges his new sim with that amount, the sim will automatically be opened.

He bought airtime of Four thousand, eight hundred naira instead and loaded inside the sim. Yet till now, the line has not been unblocked. Several calls to 180 has yielded no result as he was told to wait.

He has been waiting for months now.

His number is 07034144914.

Another friend of mine was blocked by MTN and told that he is owing about N100,000. When he complained at MTN business unit, the debt was reduced. Because he needed the sim to be working urgently, he paid the reduced figure and his line was unblocked.

Nigerians should be on alert over this kind of incident.

Some years ago I published a journal .

Now Prof C. Has moved to another school and immediately I recieved the pdf copy of the journal I forwarded it to Prof. C. Just to notify him.

On the pdf copy of the journal my name is listef as the main author together with Dr. B but Prof C. is only listed as a secondary author.

This journal is my original work and I collaborated mostly with Dr. B.

Fast forward this morning I was applying for some scholarships and needed to reference my journal so I just googled, Lo and behold Prof C. Has already uploaded the pdf copy of my research on many academic sites.

The pdf copy still carries my name and Dr. B as the main author and he as the secondary author but on those sites he claimed to be the main author and totally omitted my name.

Although if you go aheaf and download the said journal it still has my name as he only uploafed a pdf copy I sent to him and am sure he has left my name on it cos he couldnt edit it being a pdf format.

My concern is will I not be guilty of plagiarism if I lay claim to the journal ?

Please note that my name is referenced as the main author on the original site where the journal was published and even the journal has my name listed as the main author.

The majot concern is that every other place Prof C. Uploaded that journal he did not invlude my name although the uploaded material carries my name.
