Politics / Chad-bound Plane detained By Nigeria Has‘ak-47s, Bullet Proof vests’ by chimaobikanu(m): 9:16pm On Dec 06, 2014
One question keep popping....."For us
or against us" ??

A Russian airplane intercepted by Nigerian authorities Saturday on its way to neighbouring Chad, was transporting a large cache of AK47s and bullet proof vests, and other items, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported. Security operatives at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, on Saturday seized the plane which landed at the airport at about 2a.m. as a result of technical problems. Crew members of the airplane have been detained while investigations are ongoing, NAN quoted a source as saying. “Security has since been beefed up at the airport in order to ensure proper investigation,” the source said. The general manager of communication, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Yakubu Datti, confirmed the seizure of the plane. He said the pilot sought permission to land at the airport after the plane developed problems. “The plane had a technical problem and the pilot sought (for) permission to land at the airport’’, he said. Mr. Datti said security agencies had since commenced investigation into the matter. Security sources told PREMIUM TIMES the plane was travelling to N’djamena, the capital of Chad. A spokesperson for the Nigerian military, Chris Olukolade, could not be reached on Saturday for comments. The spokesman of the Joint Military Task Force in Kano, Col. Eze, did not also respond to telephone calls. The Police spokesperson in Kano, Magaji Majiya, said details of the arrest could only be provided by the airport security. This is the third time since 2009 that a Russian plane loaded with arms would
be arrested in Kano. The detained planes were later released after investigations. The destination of the latest aircraft has however raised concerns amid increasing worries in Nigeria over Chad’s alleged role in the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s northeast.

Religion / Pope Francis Joins islamic Cleric To Pray In mosque by chimaobikanu(m): 6:57pm On Nov 29, 2014
I guess he is the second Pope to do this after John Paul the II. But is still ask myself this question, are all these in a bid
foster peaceful co-existence between christians and muslims?

Pope Francis prayed on Saturday on the second day of his visit to Turkey alongside a senior Islamic cleric in Istanbul’s blue mosque. The blue mosque, known officially as the Sultanahmet Mosque, opened in 1616 and is the most famous in Turkey. Its popular name was a reference to the fine blue Iznik tiles in its main prayer room. The Vatican City spokesperson described it as a gesture of inter- religious harmony and a joint “moment of silent adoration” of God. Pope Francis took off his shoes as he entered the huge mosque before bowing his head in prayer for several minutes, facing Mecca and standing next to Istanbul’s Grand Mufti Rahmi Yaran. A similar act by his predecessor Pope Benedict in 2006 drew criticism from conservative Catholics and some Muslims. Halil Cil, 24, a hospital worker from Istanbul, said there was need to show respect for each other’s beliefs. He said God willing the pope’s visit would help in this respect. “We want to practice our religion in peace, as we want people to understand Islam,” he said. “More so we don’t want war. Islam is a religion of peace. Hundreds of people, many of them tourists, watched from behind police barriers as the pope then walked to the nearby Aya Sofya museum, once the Christian church Hagia Sophia. A group of school children waving Turkish and Vatican flags chanted “Long live Pope Francis” in Italian as the Muslim call to prayer rang out across the Sultanahmet square, the heart of Istanbul’s historic quarter. Pope would later in the day, celebrate Mass at the Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and then meet the leader of the Orthodox Church, Bartholomew. Discussions at Bartholomew are expected to focus on healing the schism in the Christian Church in 1054 that divided Rome and Constantinople. Islamic State insurgents have captured swathes of neighbouring Syria and Iraq, persecuting and killing Shi’ite Muslims, Christians and others who do not share their ultra-radical brand of Sunni Islam.

Sports / Real Madrid Lose Christian Cross from Club Crest To Appease Abu dhabi Bank by chimaobikanu(m): 1:22pm On Nov 29, 2014
Money talks!

Real Madrid remove Christian cross
from logo to appease Muslim
sensibilities and seal lucrative 'strategic
alliance' with Abu Dhabi bank Real Madrid have removed the cross
from their club crest as part of a
lucrative three-year deal with the
National Bank of Abu Dhabi. It is believed the European champions'
new crest, minus the Christian cross,
was created so as not to offend Muslim
sensibilities in the United Arab
Emirates, where a marketing drive will
take place. Club president Florentino Perez
labelled the deal as a "strategic alliance
with one of the most prestigious
institutions in the world". But the redesigning of the famous club
badge shows, according to Spanish sports paper Marca, how far top clubs are willing to go, including sacrificing
part of their famous identity, to
generate new revenue streams. A new credit card, which doubles as a
Real Madrid membership card, was
paraded by Perez where the new
design is clearly seen. The importance of the deal was
underlined by the wheeling out of a
multinational gathering of the club's
stars, including Gareth Bale, Dani
Carvajal (Spain), Toni Kroos (Germany)
and Karim Benzema (France). The 10-times European Cup winners,
revealed the new design with no
fanfare, with images only emerging
now, despite the "strategic alliance"
being signed off in September.
"I know that the local people
experience every match in a special
way and that our links with the UAE
are constantly growing stronger,"
Perez said recently. "This agreement
will help the club to keep conquering the hearts of followers in the United
Arab Emirates.” The original logo, which will still be
used in Europe, is pictured, left,
complete with the tiny Christian cross
on the top.

Business / BREAKING: Dwindling oil Price: CBN Devalues naira, Raises Lending rate by chimaobikanu(m): 4:04pm On Nov 25, 2014
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has announced a new official naira-to- dollar exchange rate, forcing down the Nigerian currency by 13 naira, as the country struggles to reshape its fiscal policies in response to dwindling oil price. The bank devalued the naira at its monetary policy committee, MPC, meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, where it also reviewed Nigeria’s monetary policy rate from 12 per cent to 13 per cent. The monetary policy rate highlights lending rate for the country’s economy. The naira will now exchange officially at N168 to a dollar, and no longer N155, the bank said. The bank also moved the private cash reserve ratio from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, while retaining public sector cash reserve ratio at 75 percent. The CBN said the decision to lower the value of naira against the dollar is to strengthen the currency. Mr. Emefiele noted the continued drop in global crude oil prices and reiterated the call on the government and the National Assembly to speed up the process towards the immediate passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, which has been pending passage for the past two years. The committee urged the government to take advantage of the declining oil prices to cut down on subsidies on supply of petroleum products in the 2015 budget, while states and Local Government should step up efforts to boost their internally generated revenue and reduce reliance on revenues from the federation account. The CBN governor assured that the bank remained committed to maintain financial system stability, while warning against speculative activities that drive inflation. More later…

Politics / Rampaging Soldiers shoot At Protesting unijos Students by chimaobikanu(m): 3:55pm On Nov 25, 2014
Soldiers on Tuesday allegedly opened fire on protesting students at the Bauchi road campus of the University of Jos, and shot a blind student. A 300-level Political Science student of the university, who did not want to be identified for fear of victimisation by the police, disclosed this to PREMIUM TIMES during a telephone interview. The University of Jos students had in the early hours of Tuesday resumed their protest over the increment of the school’s development level, which is now N10,000, the increment of acceptance fee for fresh students, N25,000 and the N10, 000 increment in tuition fee for returning students. On Monday, the protesting students held the university authority hostage, barricaded the Bauchi road campus, hindering free flow of traffic. A federal court in Abuja has freed Aminu Oguche, the suspected mastermind of the Nyanya bomb attack in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported. The court struck out a two-count terrorism charge against Mr. Ogwuche on Monday, after months of trial for the April 2014 attack which killed more than 70 people. The court hinged its decision on lack of diligent prosecution by the state. Mr. Ogwuche, a suspected Boko Haram
member, was accused by the Nigerian government of being behind the attack. The blast at the Nyanya Motor Park occurred during morning peak hours as residents were hurrying to work. The government said Mr. Ogwuche fled to Sudan after coordinating the attack. He was later repatriated to Nigeria to face charges. Details of Monday’s ruling are sketchy and will be brought in our subsequent updates.

Politics / EXCLUSIVE: Revealed: The Nigerians Aboard Jet That Smuggled $9.3 Million Arms... by chimaobikanu(m): 11:06am On Nov 23, 2014
A private jet that conveyed $9.3 million
cash from Nigeria to South Africa for an arms deal between the two countries, had Nigerian crew members, and passengers from Israel and Austria, new documents obtained by PREMIUM TIMES in Johannesburg have shown. There were three Nigerians aboard the
plane, the documents show. PREMIUM TIMES obtained the manifest of the jet that transported the huge sum, and has confirmed the identities of the passengers and crew who delivered the controversial package. South Africa seized the money early September, accusing the Nigerian government of violating its laws regulating the transfer of cash. Another payment by the Nigerian government for arms to combat the extremist Boko Haram sect, was also confiscated. The second transfer, totalling $5.7 million, was wired through the banks. The South African ambassador to Nigeria was later quoted as saying the money had been returned to Nigeria, a
claim that has yet to be verified. Details of the first transaction, revealed by a South African newspaper, City Press, said an Israeli and two Nigerians were aboard the airplane that transported the sum to Lanseria airport in South Africa. The first tranche of the money was conveyed to South Africa on September 5 in two plastic bag suitcases and two hand luggage aboard an airplane belonging to Ayo Oritsejafor, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. While the Nigerian government confirmed the transactions, it denied violating any foreign law. The government also refused to provide the names of those aboard the airplane. In its report, widely quoted in the Nigerian media, City Press said the Israeli passenger, Eyal Mesika, had the key to the combination lock of the suitcases. The paper also said two Nigerian passengers were aboard the plane. It quoted South African law enforcement officials. The report however did not reveal the identities of the Nigerians, and South African officials also declined to provide those details to PREMIUM TIMES when contacted from Nigeria by telephone. In an investigation that involved visiting South Africa, PREMIUM TIMES has obtained documents showing details of the transaction, including the flight manifest of the airplane. The listing shows that beside Mr. Mesika, the only Nigerians on board the aircraft were crew members. The other two passengers who conveyed the cash were Austrians, the manifest shows. The two Austrians are named, R. Wolfgang and M. Michael. The flight crew members of the Project Eagle Air jet with flight number: N808HE were Ojongbede R.T (captain),
Fejoku U, (flight officer) and George E.E (flight attendant). The listing contradicts reports that the other passengers were Nigerians, a claim that set off an intense controversy after the All Progressives Congress, APC, accused a former militant leader, Dokubo Asari, of being one of those aboard the plane. The APC relied on unverified reports by some news websites [not PREMIUM TIMES] in making the false claim. Mr. Asari denied the allegation and threatened legal action against Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson of the APC. In an interview with PREMIUM TIMES at the time, Mr. Asari threatened to physically assault Mr. Mohammed if he failed to get justice in the courts. “After all the South Africa People have given the names of people on the plane and if by next week we go to court and the court is being manipulated not to give me justice, I will resort to self-help,” he said. “I have the capacity to resort to self- help. I will not give anybody any apology because if a man has mouth to malign me then I can use what I have to fight for myself.”

Science/Technology / Human Poop-poweredbus Hits UK Roads by chimaobikanu(m): 3:53pm On Nov 21, 2014
You wouldn’t think that human poop
has many uses, but it turns out that the
UK is using brown to go green. As of
today, Britain’s first “poo bus” will be
shuttling passengers between the city
of Bath and Bristol Airport. And yes, you guessed it: it’s powered by human
waste, alongside food waste. This “Bio-bus” runs on biomethane gas, which is produced from the treatment of human sewage and food
that is unsuitable for human
consumption. It has a combustion
engine that is similar to diesel engines
in normal buses, but the gas is stored
in dome-like tanks on the roof. The gas is generated using anaerobic
(oxygen hating) bacteria, which break
down the waste into methane-rich
gas. Before it can be used to power
buses, CO is removed and propane is added. Other impurities are also
removed so that the emissions are
virtually odorless (thank goodness). It
also produces fewer overall emissions
than traditional diesel engines, and is
obviously more sustainable. Just one person’s annual food and
sewage waste is enough to fuel the
bus for 60 kilometers (37 miles). One tank is sufficient for a 300 kilometer
(186 mile) journey, which is about five
people’s annual waste. The company behind the gas, GENco,
produces approximately 17 million
cubic meters of biomethane annually,
which is enough to power around
8,300 homes. And as of this week,
they’ve started injecting gas generated from human and food waste into the
national gas grid network. “A home generated green gas,
biomethane, is capable of replacing
around 10% of the UK’s domestic gas
needs and is currently the only
renewable fuel available for HGVs,” said Charlotte Morton, chief executive of the Anaerobic Digestion and
Bioresources Association. “The bus
also clearly shows that human poo
and our waste food are valuable
resources.”

Politics / Isis 'A Message In Blood' Video Showsbeheading Of Kurdish Man In Iraq by chimaobikanu(m): 10:21am On Aug 29, 2014
Isis has released a video apparently
showing the beheading of a Kurdish
man in Iraq as a warning to Kurds
fighting the group in the country. The video, entitled “A Message in
Blood”, was posted online hours after
another video purporting to show the
mass execution of up to 250 Syrian soldiers in the desert. It shows a group of captured men,
believed to be Kurdish fighters, in
orange jumpsuits sat in front of an Isis
flag. Kurdish "peshmerga" fighters are
trying to counter the militant’s
advances in northern Iraq. They are
backed by US air strikes on Isis targets
in the country. Another man is then shown kneeling
on the floor in front of a mosque with
three militants behind him in Mosul,
Iraq’s second biggest city, which was
overrun by Isis when their insurgency
began. The victim is then beheaded and the
fighters warn others will face the same
fate should Kurdish leaders choose to
continue an alliance with the US. It comes after the group posted a
video on YouTube showing the
American journalist James Foley being
beheaded by a militant, who said his
killing was in response to air strikes.
The fighter, who is believed to be British, also threatened the life of
another journalist, Steven Sotloff. Video footage posted on Thursday
appeared to show Syrian soldiers
being marched through the desert in
their underwear after Isis seized the
Tabqa air base in Raqqa. The 250 shabeeha taken captive by
the Islamic State [ISIS] from Tabqa in
Raqqa have been executed," a caption
posted with the video read. Syrian Observatory for Human
Rights said the soldiers were captured
when they attempted to flee the fallen
air base in Raqqa after days of fierce
fighting. They put the death toll at 120. On Thursday, President Barack Obama
admitted the US does not yet have a
strategy for confronting Isis militants
in Syria. He approved air strikes against Isis in
Iraq earlier this month following the
beheading of Mr Foley but has not
made public any plans for across the
border He told a press briefing in Washington:
“I think what I’ve seen in some of the
news reports suggests that folks are
getting a little further ahead of where
we’re at than we currently are. “Our core priority right now is just to
make sure that our folks are safe and
to do an effective assessment of Iraqi
and Kurdish capabilities.”
