Crime / Soldier Sentenced To 7yrs In Prison For Shooting & Killing Of A Man In Maiduguri by chimere66: 6:46am On Feb 02, 2017
SOLDIER BAGS 7 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR MANSLAUGHTER

another 14 months for desertion

The General Court Marshal (GCM) of 7 Division sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State has sentenced a serving soldier to seven (7) years imprisonment for manslaughter for shooting and killing one Mr. Umar Alkali within the popular Monday Market in Maiduguri metropolis on 23 December 2015.

The soldier (name withheld) was found guilty of manslaughter punishable under Section (105) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.

The soldier's plea that he acted in self defence, that the deceased assaulted and tried to wrestle his rifle from him before he shot and killed him to save his life and that of his compatriots was set aside on the ground of use of disproportionate force.

While dismissing the initial charge of murder leveled against the soldier the GCM upheld the charge of manslaughter.

The President of the Court, Brigadier General Olusegun Adeniyi while delivering the verdict gave a detailed account of all the proceedings and relevant laws that guided the court at arriving at its decision.

Another soldier (name withheld) was also found guilty of one count charge of desertion punishable under section 60 of the Act.

He was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.

It will be recalled that the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu in August 2016 inaugurated a General Court Marshal with the mandate of dealing with matters that may arise from activities of troops within the Division's area of responsibility and to ensure that troops work within the framework of their rules of engagement.

While reading the rulings of the court, the President of GCM, Brigadier General Adeniyi admonished officers and soldiers to always maintain high level of discipline, respect for human rights and strict adherence to rules of engagement and other laws guiding their conducts.

He maintained that Nigerian military is known for discipline.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has approved a N10m revolving loan to Ekiti State Chapter of National Association of Beer, Food and Drinks Sellers.

Governor Fayose made this announcement on Tuesday while addressing members of the association during the swearing-in ceremony of new excos of the association at the Ekiti State Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti.

Governor Fayose who appreciated members of the association for always standing by him through thick and thin promised to continue doing his best at making life better for all and sundry in the state. With a promise to look into all the requests of the association as highlighted by its president, Mr. Fayose asked the executive to ensure the largesse goes round the 16 Local Government Areas with reference to the population of each LG.

The governor assured members that the N10m will be available in cash within the next 24 hours.

Charging Ekiti women to turn out en-mass to be celebrated in a grand style on the occasion of 2017 World Women's Day which comes up on 8th March, 2017, governor Fayose said "the conference will be celebrated elaborately to identify with the women, we are doing it to let the world know that when you develop an average woman in the society, you are developing the nation. An opportunity for the woman is an opportunity for the children and this government in the 2017 budget is going to give due recognition to women. We are going to support them to make a difference in the society".

On why the government is making the N10m loan available despite the economic recession in the country, governor Fayose said: "this sector is mostly populated by women, the 'women' sector is critical, if you recognise this sector, you will make a lot of progress in human development.

"Most of them are private business owners, beer sellers, food sellers and so on, this loan is to encourage them, this is to create wealth and keep them busy, they can't earn salary from government but government can encourage and create enabling environment for their business to thrive".

The newly sworn-in president of the Ekiti State Chapter of National Association of Beer, Food and Drinks Sellers, Mr. Williams Ogundare aka Genesis commended governor Fayose for his fatherly role in harmonising stakeholders in the sector.

Ogundare who said he has over 15 years beer selling business experience made it clear that the association has never had it so good in the history of Ekiti State. Other members of the association who spoke with newsmen eulogised governor Fayose for the kind gesture thanking him for the recognition given them. They described the gesture as first of its kind.

Contrary to earlier information from multiple social media sources that Nigeria's Fatima Kyari emerged AU Commissioner for Peace and Security at Addis Abba, she lost to Algerian Chergui. She wrote.....

'Contrary to various media reports and information being circulated on social media, Nigeria lost its bid for the position of Commissioner for Peace and Security, #AU Commission to the incumbent Smail Chergui of Algeria. We wish him the best and we shall continue to work together towards building a prosperous and peaceful continent'.

Please previous information I shared based on multiple social media confirmations should be discarded.

Thanks.

At the moment Nigerians are groaning under this recession time; but popular afro-pop singer, Gabriel Amanyi, widely known as ‘Terry G’ is someone whose milk of human kindness, is like an inestimable fountain, that has endlessly flowed to whet parched throats and lover of humanity and an embodiment of munificence.

This dude is taking good advantage of the hard times to give back to his people, through free doling of bags of his pure water production to restaurants, bars sundry individuals to sustain their businesses. It is only because he knows the value of water to their life and business.

Terry G, coming from a slum background has devoted a substantial chunk of his private resources towards the care and service of not just the less privileged but also to humanity, was recently sighted at Iju-Ishaga, a sub-rural area of Lagos, distributing free bags of water randomly to people, and at the same time promoting and creating awareness to his ‘Terry G Pure Water Production’ which has been in operation for over two years now.

Not sooner than he did this benevolence act, he jetted out to the United State of America on musical playing tour and will be back in due time to resume his water business and also his thriving musical venture.

IMO AIR KICKS OFF; ACQUIRES BRAND NEW AIRCRAFT

Imo State is set to become the first State in Nigeria to own and operate an airline company operated by Dana Air, as the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha leads his appointees and stakeholders in the State to take delivery of the first batch of aircrafts at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.

The carrier named "IMO AIR" is billed to hold its own against other operators in the Nigerian aviation sector while providing enhanced revenue for the State, massive employment for Imo citizens and business opportunities for Imolites and Ndi Igbo in general.

Also in the offing is the Imo International Cargo which targets to open the Southeast up to importers and exporters of all kinds of commodities, thereby reducing the over reliance on Lagos, Kano and other international airports for the export and import of goods into the country. This initiative is no doubt a boost for the Southeast economic liberation struggle. According to the Governor, the cargo aspect of the "IMO AIR" initiative will take off by April, 2017.
