Religion / Pornographic Films Shot In Catholic Church Without Permission by chinweub: 12:12pm On Jul 17, 2014
The sweetest sin: Austrian parish erupts after porn shoot desecrates sanctuary
An adult actress and her film crew could face up to 6 months in jail for staging pornographic films in a church

Congregants at a Catholic church in Hörsching, Austria are up in arms after two porn films were allegedly shot in their house of worship in June, without the parish priest’s permission. The films, which were made available for download online, prompted the Diocese of Linz to file an official complaint against its adult star(s) and crew members, who face up to six months in jail if they’re found guilty. So, while it might not be as strange as having sex on top of a Chipotle, making porn in a church seems to have greater criminal consequences.

According to The Local, police are currently searching for the films’ star, 24-year-old Polish-Austrian actress Babsi, who has become something of an Internet sensation for her church porn role. Investigators are also looking into how the crew was able to get into the church, after parish priest Father Walter confirmed that he had not granted the film crew permission to shoot on the premises. Father Walter was also the one to discover that his church had been used as a makeshift porn studio, after an anonymous tipster alerted him to the videos online.

Under section 189 of Austria’s criminal code, which outlaws any “mischief” that might cause legitimate nuisance for a religious community, the pornographers not only face potential jail time, but a fine as well. As for the parish, clergy members are currently working to “reinstate the dignity of the church.” According to a statement from the diocese, “the sacraments which were celebrated in the past few weeks in the parish church are still considered valid.”

Family / Nurses Warn: Parents Put Ipads Ahead Of Newborns by chinweub: 12:31am On Dec 05, 2013
A hospital in central Sweden has warned that too many new parents are more concerned with selfies and status updates than the well-being of their newborn babies.

"Mothers have their telephones accessible and when it pings with a new text message they get curious and it grabs their attention instantly," Camilla Karlsson, head of the maternity ward at the hospital in Växjö, told Sveriges Television (SVT).

Two years ago, the maternity ward began allowing mobile phones and tablet computers into the delivery room. Since then, parents have become increasingly obsessed with social media, Karlsson explained, adding that she's concerned about the effects on the newborn children. Karlsson and her colleagues are now urging parents to put their electronic gadgets aside, stop worrying about posting pics of their newborn babies on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, and instead focus on their children, especially during nursing.

"We're going to talk more about how we deal with this," Karlsson told SVT.

A study published in the Acta Paediatrica medical journal earlier this year cited mobile phone use by mothers as a contributing factor in at least three of 26 cases when newborn babies suddenly stopped breathing.

"Previous studies have shown a relationship to a moment of distraction, like when a mother is lying down and being stitched up. But mobile phones can also be a distraction," paediatrician Eric Herlenius told the TT news agency in May in conjunction with the publication of the study, which analyzed data on 68,364 births in the Stockholm area.

"Of course people want to share their news with the world, but someone should always have their focus on the baby."

But child psychologist Malin Bergström doesn't think parents should be too concerned about grabbing an iPad or smartphone as soon as their newborns emerge into the world.

"It's positive that parents have a social network and it's good for the child too," she told SVT, adding that parents are best in a position to judge how much they use their phones in front of their newborns. "There can be a risk of depression if a parent doesn't have their social network around them. I think we should look positively on parents that want to share news of their newborn child."

Properties / The Nobel Prize in Medicine by chinweub: 9:31pm On Sep 02, 2013
The winners, James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman, and Thomas C. Sudhof, were announced at the Karolinska Institute in northern Stockholm.

They were recognized for their individual efforts that led to the complete understanding of how molecules are transported within a cell - and even exported from a cell - and how they are taken exactly where they need to be through small packages called vesicles.

Knowing how a vesicle transports molecules could one day lead to discovering the preventions and the causes of neurological diseases, diabetes, and immunological diseases.

While perhaps initially not easy to understand, Göran Hansson, Secretary General of the Nobel Committee at Karolinska Institute, simplified the matter.

"It could be compared to the buses of Stockholm, the whole public transport system, moving hundreds of thousands of people all over the city, stopping at right places, letting passengers out and taking in new ones," he told The Local.

"This is a good metaphor to compare this system with vesicles transporting molecules between organelles in the cell, the membrane, and out of the cells."

The discoveries were based on initial fundamental finds by Schekman in the early eighties, which in turn were expanded upon by Rothman when the pair collaborated. The complete picture became apparent when Sudhof combined the two scientists' work with his own research stemming from his fascination with vesicles and their signals.

But what does it all mean for me?

The Nobel winners' discoveries don't mean a whole lot for the typical man on the street. Instead, the Nobel Committee rewarded the scientists for the light they have shed on a previously unknown topic.

"New knowledge of how the human organism functions is always good," Hansson told The Local.

"There is not medicine available based on these discoveries, but we hope there will be new therapies in the future and there are already diagnostics based on the machinery. We expect a lot more to come out of it in the future."

Hansson also noted that he anticipated more women to take home the award in the future. While only ten of the 214 winners since 1901 have been female, he pointed to a shift in the statistics over time.

"Although we awarded three middle-aged men this year, if you look at the last ten years - we awarded four women the Nobel Prize. The decade before there was one, so there's an increasing number," he explained.

"That's to be expected, more women are entering science, more are taking leading roles in research... I'd predict that we will see more women, and more people coming outside of north America and western Europe being awarded the Nobel Prize in the future."

What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea (AP-ne-ah) is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.

Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.

Sleep apnea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. When your breathing pauses or becomes shallow, you’ll often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep.

As a result, the quality of your sleep is poor, which makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is a leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/sleepapnea/

Business / U.K. Stripped Of Triple-a Rating by chinweub: 1:07am On Feb 23, 2013
Moody's Investors Service stripped the United Kingdom of its triple-A credit rating, predicting economic weakness will weigh on public finances for years to come.

Moody's lowered the U.K.'s domestic and foreign-currency bond rating one notch to Aa1 and changed its outlook to stable. It is the first of the three major ratings firms to do so, though both Standard & Poor's Ratings Services and Fitch Ratings have the U.K. on negative outlooks.

The move by Moody's is a psychological blow to the United Kingdom, which is fiercely proud of its historical position on the world stage and keenly attuned to signs of its diminishment. It is also a political blow to Prime Minister David Cameron and his chancellor of the exchequer, George Osborne, who has long justified his painful government spending cuts on the grounds that he is maintaining the U.K.'s triple-A rating.

The U.K. economy fell early and hard in the financial crisis, and it has had substantial trouble recovering. Many economists believe a "triple-dip" recession is in the offing, and Moody's alluded to "sluggish growth" persisting into the second half of the decade.

The government and the central banks have thrown an arsenal of fiscal and monetary weapons at the problem, including low interest rates and a program meant to restart stalled bank lending to the troubled economy. Little has worked. Meantime, Mr. Osborne has pushed to trim the U.K.'s gaping budget deficit.

"We expect the country's debt will continue to grow in coming years," said Bart Oosterveld, managing director in charge of Moody's sovereign ratings group, in an interview. "In our central scenario, we don't expect the country's debt burden to stabilize until 2016."

Credit-ratings agencies had been warning for months that the U.K.'s top rating was in danger. Speculation about a possible downgrade had been percolating in the markets for the last week. That helped drive the pound down Thursday to a 31-month low against the dollar. Slipping after the downgrade, the pound ended Friday trading at $1.5163.

"As more and more members get kicked out of the [triple-A] club, the marginal impact on the currency is less," said Gabriel de Kock, head of U.S. foreign-exchange strategy at Morgan Stanley MS +3.29% .

The U.K. is unlikely to see meaningfully higher borrowing costs as a result of the Moody's move; its bonds have benefitted for several years from investors' flight away from troubled euro-zone countries and toward European nations with stronger economic fundamentals, or who issue their own currency. The Bank of England's robust quantitative easing program, in which it purchases government bonds, has also helped hold bond yields down and keep a lid on borrowing costs.

Messers. Osborne and Cameron had made retaining the triple-A rating one of their priorities when they took power in 2010. Since then, the U.K. economy has barely grown.

More recently, however, Mr. Osborne has downplayed its significance. In December, he told a parliamentary committee that although losing the rating "wouldn't be a good thing," it was only one test of the U.K.'s economic policy. "The ultimate test is what you can borrow money at."

Late Friday, he issued a response to the downgrade, saying he planned to stick to his austerity plans. "Tonight we have a stark reminder of the debt problems facing our county," he said. "Far from weakening our resolve to deliver our economic recovery plan, this decision redoubles it."

Mr. Osborne blames the U.K.'s problems on debts built up over many years and the crisis in huge neighbouring euro zone, which accounts for a large portion of U.K. exports.

Mr. Osborne is due to present his annual budget on March 20.

The Moody's decision was based on "the increasing clarity that, despite considerable structural economic strengths, the U.K.'s economic growth will remain sluggish over the next few years," Moody's said. "The country's current economic recovery has already proven to be significantly slower ..Moody's believes the risks to the growth outlook remain skewed to the downside."

The sluggish pace of the U.K.'s economic recovery has made it more difficult for the government to shore up its finances, and Moody's says it now expects the country's general debt level to peak at just over 96% of gross domestic product in 2016. The U.K.'s high and rising debt burden has left the country more vulnerable to future economic instability, which is unlikely to reverse before 2016, it said.

The move follows similar high profile cuts in recent years. In November, Moody's also downgraded France from its top rating. In August 2011, Standard & Poor's cut the U.S. credit rating from AAA. S&P also downgraded France and Austria in January 2012.

Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor's Ratings Services both have triple-A ratings on the U.K. with negative outlooks.

In its statement, Moody's also highlighted uncertainty about how that the government's fiscal consolidation plan will be implemented since Mr. Cameron's administration announced that the program will have to be discussed by the next parliament.

As a result of the slower-than-expected economic recovery, higher debt load and political risks, the government's ability to absorb any future economic or financial shocks has been limited, Moody's said.

"There is a risk that the U.K government may not be able to reverse the debt trajectory before the next economic shock or cyclical downturn in the economy," the ratings agency said.

Moody's expects that a combination of political will and medium-term fundamental underlying economic strengths will, in time, allow the government to implement its fiscal consolidation plan and reverse the U.K.'s debt trajectory.

Computers / Use Wifi Names To Vent Neighbourly Rage by chinweub: 9:51pm On Oct 28, 2012
Forget the passive-aggressive notes left in the communal laundry room, a common form of inter-neighbour communication among Swedes.

The latest trend to hit the wireless world of Swedish homes is changing the name of one's wireless connection, so that anyone nearby seeking an internet connection can read it.

By changing one’s own router name from the standard “Home Network” or “Router123” to something more personal such as “Stop stealing my internet”, neighbours in Sweden have found a whole new way to anonymously vent their domestic frustrations.

“I saw someone who had a WiFi called ‘Keep it down for God’s sake,’” said trend expert Johan Ronnestam to the Metro newspaper.

While the majority of the passive-aggressive names deal with noise and the theft of internet connection, Ronnestam explained that Swedes are taking the chance to be more imaginative with names.

“When the technical knowledge arrives, creativity comes as surely as night follows day. But you can also turn it around and make a name to flirt with your neighbour.”

Meanwhile, the English speaking world has embraced the trend, with names such as “PrettyFlyForAWiFi” and “DropItLikeItsHotSpot” commonly used examples.

Jokes Etc / Jail For 'fake' Grandkids Who Conned Pensioners by chinweub: 9:34pm On Oct 28, 2012
The two men, aged 47 and 45, were sentenced to 3 years and ten months prison at the Hudiksvall District Court for aggravated fraud and attempted aggravated fraud.

The men, who hail from Stockholm, were arrested in March outside of Örnsköldsvik in eastern Sweden after police had received several reports from elderly people who had been conned out of their money. The thieves focused their attention on women, with only two men being caught up in the scandal.

The crimes were committed within a four month period, with the majority of victims being women aged over 80, the oldest being a woman born in 1912 who was tricked out of 50,000 kronor.

Some people had been tricked out of as much as 60,000 kronor.

The scam worked by the con artists calling the elderly people, acting as their grandchild, then asking for money to go towards a new car.

The scammers then told the victims that a friend would be around later to fetch the money.

The men were charged with 37 counts of completed fraud and 100 attempted frauds. As well as the one million kronor, the men took jewellery worth around 350,000 kronor.

The pair admitted to just one of the charges, but evidence found on their telephones confirmed that they had made calls to the victims.

I feel you! Currently undergoing similar experience, but no beating! Stop asking and plan your life according to your salary. He will come around!

If he just started this attitude, either there is business problem, another woman or communication breakdown.

From another perspective, if you are working and earning money, contributing to rent, investment and children care should not be something to complain about or expect to be balanced back your contribution! That might have set off your hubby!

What is the point of working or earning money when you cant happily contribute to family expenses?

THE BEATING IS WHAT I DONT SUPPORT IN ANY FORM!!!
