The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it’ll begin to release the results of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board (UTME) from Tuesday, May 2, 2023.The exam body made this known in the minutes of its emergency management meeting over the weekend. In the minutes, the board said the delay in the release of results was to ensure that all necessary screenings were concluded.

“The Board would be releasing the results of candidates, who have taken the examination so far on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2023. The Board had delayed the release to ensure that all necessary screening are concluded besides ensuring that the mean and standard deviation are reasonably obtained before releasing these results.

“As candidates check their results on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2023, those who sat the examination but had challenges without being aware of such, would not see their results but would instead see their notification for rescheduled examination,” the minute read. The exam body also plans to conduct a mop-up exam for three categories of candidates who could not sit for the exam within their scheduled time “All candidates, who could not sit the 2023 UTME within their scheduled time owing to no fault of theirs, would be rescheduled to take the examination on Saturday, 6th May, 2023.

“Candidates under these categories are principally those who were verified at their centres but could not sit the examination; those who could not be biometrically verified, and those with mismatched data,” JAMB said.

The 2023 UTME which commenced on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, will end on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The nine-point agenda are security, promotion of religious affairs, education, healthcare delivery, water supply, economy, agriculture, women and youth empowerment and local government autonomy.“The committee is expected to prepare a roadmap for implementing the manifesto of the incoming government based on collated campaign promises.

“This agenda will have to be implemented on the short, medium and long terms,’’ he stressed. Aliyu urged all members of the committee to put in their best to deliver on the task ahead. In his acceptance speech, Sani thanked the governor-elect for the confidence reposed in the committee members.He described the opportunity as a great gesture and assured of collaborative efforts by committee members to discharge the function.

Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the March 18 election with 453,661 votes to defeat his closest contender Malam Sa’idu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 404,632 votes.

Ogoshi was kidnapped days after the former Governor of the state, Professor Onje Gye-Wado regained freedom from kidnappers. Daniel Ogoshi, the driver of the Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe has been kidnapped.Ogoshi was said to have been abducted on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, from the residence of his friend around 9:30 pm, at Ombi 2, college of Agric, Kwandere road Lafia by some gunmen. According to thePunch, his phone and car were left behind. Confirming the incident, a family friend of the victim, who spoke to the newspaper said he received a call around 9pm that his brother had been kidnapped.

The source said before the police arrived at the scene, the kidnappers had fled with the victim.

Also confirming Ogoshi’s abduction, the media officer to the deputy governor, Chris Ehima, said he was informed about the incident but did not have adequate information on what had transpired, ThePunch reports. Ehima, however, expressed confidence that the state government would do everything possible to secure the release of the driver.

The incident has also been confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ramhan Nansel.

According to Nansel, the police were on top of the matter. Ogoshi was kidnapped days after the former governor of the state, Professor Onje Gye-Wado, regained freedom from kidnappers. Gye-Wado, who served as Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State between 1999 and 2003, was released after spending four days with his captors.

The Government advised unemployed persons in Lagos to take advantage of the opportunity for the government to have their data.In a bid to make plans for unemployed people living in Lagos State, the Federal Government through the National Directorate of Employment has commenced the registration of jobless persons in the state.The NDE office while announcing the development recently said the registration exercise will hold between Monday, April 17 and Friday, April 28, 2023.

Unemployed persons in Lagos are expected to visit the NDE office at at 7, Barikisu Iyede Street, Onike, Yaba or the 20 local government areas in the state for their registration. Confirming the development in a statement, the Lagos State NDE office, Coordinator Mrs. Serena Edward advised unemployed persons in Lagos to take advantage of the opportunity for the government to have their data.

Edward said, “The Lagos State office of NDE has embarked on the registration of unemployed persons in the 20 local government areas in the state.“The NDE is an organization set up by the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1986 to curb mass unemployment and reduce the craving for white-collar jobs that are not adequate for the teeming number of graduates churned out every year.

The registration exercise will hold at the NDE state office at 7 Barikisu Iyede Street Onike Yaba and the 20 local government areas in the state.“I urge all unemployed persons in Lagos State to take advantage of this opportunity to register at their designated local governments to benefit from the programme as the federal government wants to have the complete data of the unemployed persons in the country to make adequate plans for them.”

A group, the Christian Northern Nigeria Political Forum (CNNPF), has expressed support for the aspiration of Alhaji Aminu Jaji, for the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly. National Coordinator of CNNPP, Garuba Mohammed, made this known at a news conference on Tuesday in Kaduna. Jaji, a member-elect to represent Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara, was Chairman, House Committee on National Security, Intelligence and Public Safety in the 8th Assembly. Mohammed also advised the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu, to form a government of national unity to heal wounds and reunite Nigerians.

The Federal Government says it will increase excise tax on tobacco products from 30% ad-valorem to 50% as part of measures to control tobacco smoking in the country. Dr Mangai Malau, Head, Tobacco Control Unit, Noncommunicable Disease Division, Federal Ministry of Health disclosed this on Tuesday, at the National Tobacco Control Budget Advocates Meeting in Abuja. He has further imposed 30 percent tax on tobacco products.

He said that presently, the Federal Government imposed 30% tax on tobacco products but its target was to increase to 50% in order to meet the World Health organization (WHO) standard. According to him, funding for tobacco control must come majorly from taxation and there is also need for relevant stakeholders to apply tax measures rightly if they are to address the issues of tobacco control in the country.“In effectively controlling tobacco and tobacco products in Nigeria, funding is a critical component. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) recognises this and clearly stipulates in Article 26.

“It states that parties shall provide financial support in respect of its national activities intended to achieve the objective of the Convention, in accordance with its national plans, priorities and programmes.“It is also important to state that funding is a major provision of the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act. “Section eight of the Act, provides for the Tobacco Control Fund, which shall be used to fund tobacco control activities programmes and projects,” Malau said.

According to him, this meeting is therefore important as it will seek for better funding for tobacco control, in order for Nigeria to meet the objectives of the WHO FCTC and the NTC Act.

He said, “Tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, disability and impoverishment in the world. He said that tobacco smoke contained over 7,000 chemicals, of which hundreds were toxic and about 70 are known to cause cancer.

“Also, there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke and even a brief exposure can be harmful to one’s health. “Concerned about the threat from tobacco, Nigeria signed and ratified the WHO FCTC, in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In 2015, the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act was enacted and its Regulations was passed in 2019,” he said. In his remarks, the Chairman of Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA), Mr Akinbode Oluwafemi, stressed the need for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to advocate for more budgetary allocation for tobacco control in the country.

In Edo,The NDLEA Personnel said the student was arrested on Saturday opposite 2nd Gate of the institution dealing in illicit drugs.The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has arrested a pregnant woman, by name Rabetu Abdulrasak, who was 24 years of age and a cripple, Shehu Adams in possession of illicit drugs in Edo.

Prior to NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, over 14 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs were recovered from the two on Saturday in Agbede, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state. Babafemi said in a statement on Sunday in Abuja that drugs recovered from them included cannabis, methamphetamine, tramadol and swinol. He also announced the arrest of one Isoyo Iveren-Susan, a 22-year-old HND female student of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro in Ogun.

The NDLEA spokesperson said Iveren-Susan was arrested on Saturday opposite 2nd Gate of the institution dealing in illicit drugs.

Babafemi said that 1,100ML of codeine-based cough syrup and 283grams of cannabis were recovered from her.This is just as operatives in Lagos arrested two suspects: Nonso Peter, 21, and Bright Chibike, 23, with 43.4 kilogrammes of cannabis at Ile-Epo, Abule Egba area of the state on Friday.“In Katsina State, no less than 1,730 bottles of codeine-based syrup were seized from a suspect, Bishir Sa’adu in Katsina metropolis on Sunday, April 9. “Also, one Muhamadu Yusuf was equally arrested same day with 8,000 capsules of tramadol inside a commercial bus along Kano-Katsina road,” he said.

Babafemi added that NDLEA operatives in Kaduna State on Thursday raided a clandestine laboratory where mist potassium citrate was being produced in a residential apartment at 16, Sabon Gari, Zaria. Babafemi said that the owner of the laboratory, Christopher Agodi was arrested and 102 cartons containing 2,448 bottles of the substance recovered. “Similarly, anti-narcotic officers acting on a tip-off, arrested two suspects: Aminu Saudi, 45 and Abdullahi Sani, 35, at Ogbese, Ondo State, with 11 jumbo bags containing 211kg of cannabis concealed in rice chaffs.“This was closely followed by the destruction of six hectares of cannabis farm in Uso forest in the state on Thursday, April 13,” he said.

Ahead of the 2015 general election, Buhari on Wednesday, March 18, 2025, while speaking at a town hall meeting in Abuja promised to do all it takes to rescue the girls.He said if elected, he would – as a retired major general – defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity, end terrorism and reunite Chibok girls and other victims of insurgency with their families.

The president in his speech to the public says,“as a father, I feel the pain of the victims of insurgency, kidnapping and violence. Under my watch, no force, external or internal, will occupy even an inch of Nigerian soil. I will give it all it takes to ensure that our girls kidnapped from Chibok are rescued and reintegrated with their families,” Buhari promised. Unfortunately, Buhari has only 45 days left in office and nine years after the tragic abduction of 276 schoolgirls, 96 of them are still in the custody of their captors.

And prior to the kidnap of the school girls, a group of citizens advocating for their rescue launched the campaign. According to the group, the last report on the status of the Chibok Girls in October 2022 showed that 107 victims have been released by their captors, while 57 girls escaped from their den. The military rescued 16 while 96 are still missing. Those rescued by the military were handed over to the Government of Borno State and have not been reunited with their families.


In a statement released on Thursday, April 13, 2023, to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the abduction of Chibok girls, the group called on the state government to release the girls and allow them to have control of their lives.

The statement reads, “We are equally distressed to learn that after a successful campaign by our gallant military in the last two years when they liberated thousands of people including over 12 girls — now women — and handed them over to the Borno State. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Thursday, said the story was deliberately skewed to tarnish the image and reputation of the Nigerian army. According to Nwachukwu, it is expedient to set the record straight and clear grey areas on the ejection of the retired senior officer. He said House 7 on Abakaliki Lane was among Federal Government houses accommodating Nigerian army officers in Enugu for over two decades. He said that the house was allocated to retired Col. EL Ugwoke, then a Major, as his official residence when he was posted as the Deputy Commander 82 Division Intelligence Group in 2007.

Nwachukwu explained that that the officer continued to occupy the house even after he was posted out of the division. He added that it was later discovered that he attempted to dubiously appropriate the house to himself, using some officials of Enugu State Government. He said that in 2020, a committee was instituted by then General Officer Commanding (GOC) to ascertain the status of the property. He said that the property was discovered to be among the houses handed over to 82 Division by past administrators to ameliorate the accommodation challenges of the Division.“That the said property was not among 26 residential quarters officially handed over to the Enugu State Government in 2015.

“That there are no documents to confirm that the said property was sold or paid for by anyone. “It is worthy of note that officers of the army occupying institutionalised houses are expected to vacate such accommodation while on posting or retirement.“However, the retired senior officer failed to comply knowing fully the rippling effects on accommodation status of others posted in, and serving officers,” he said.

The Army spokesman also said the alleged brutalisation of the retired officer’s wife and children in the said publication was outright falsehood aimed at whipping up undue sentiments. He said the Nigerian army was a disciplined institution with utmost regard for family institution and the vulnerable, particularly women and children.

The Commissioner of Police in Plateau , Mr Batholemew Onyeka, said that the state House of Assembly would remain sealed till security threats within and around the assembly complex were tackled. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has demanded an apology from FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, makers of Peak milk over its Easter advert, which the body described as disrespectful and offensive. In its bid to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ at Calvary, the company used its Peak milk brand as a metaphor for the crucifixion of Jesus. The advert displays a battered and pierced tin of milk with its content spilt on its body and a nail placed beside it. The controversial advert also has the caption: “Bruised and Pierced for us. #GoodFriday”.


However, Barrister Joseph Daramola, the General Secretary of CAN, in a statement on Monday, April 10, 2023, said the advert is offensive and unacceptable. He asked the diary company to apologise to Christians or face legal action and boycott of their products.“We find this advert to be insensitive, offensive, and totally unacceptable.
