NRI PRIEST: There is an Igbo adage that's says "agwa bu mma nwanyi",which means good behavior is the beauty of a woman. I don't know if that answers ur quetion.

It does, thanks.

What defines female beauty in your culture? I know everyone has individual preferences, but is there an overall standard of beauty for women that exists in your society? This thread is not meant to bash women or objectify them, but to celebrate cultural differences.

Attention has more value so long as basic needs are met.

If you are interested in a woman how much do you want to know about her previous relationships?

tpia1: Nigeria has 244 tribes.

Broaden your horizons beyond igbo and yoruba alone.

I know that, but I wanted to keep the topic specific to these two...
Culture / Re: Are Black Africans (Nigerians) And Africans In America (Akatas) Really Different by ChitChatChick88: 1:03pm On Dec 07, 2012
yorubaamerican: I struggle with this question. ...Please enlighten me on what makes the two groups so different. Honestly, I see many similarities between Africans in America and Nigerians. Most especially physical and behavioral similarities. I'm seeking a connection between both sides. What does it take to make such a connection become a reality? I know it's possible.

I believe it takes positive interactions with one another, the formation of deep friendships and relationships to break down stereotypes each group has of one another. From physical appearance it is pretty difficult to tell an AA from a Nigerian unless the AA is very light, but then again there are light-skinned non-mixed Nigerians as well so even that can be misleading. Honestly, even though its still frowned upon, intermarriage is probably the best means to make connections and break down stereotypes (assuming the two have an understanding for one another and the marriage institution).

You are right about behavioral similarities too, I have noticed the following...

Expressive in discussion and interactions
Love of music and dancing
Fictive Kin (Referring to someone as Auntie....AAs also have "play cousins", but don't typically refer to older men as Uncle...)
Lateness ( embarassed )

However, there are some differences too
Different Food
More respect for elders
In general more dedication to academics

Don't feel discouraged yorubaamerican, I'm sure you'll be able to bridge the gap between the two cultures smiley

PAGAN 9JA:
^i agree to that. If you speak about the tribe, any tribe in this world will reject such a thing because it is against tribal norms, and such relationships can entail the extinction of a tribe.

these days it is individuals who decide but i am telling you that our cultures reject it.

Really The extinction of a whole tribe... undecided I think I'm referring more to Nigerians that are already here in the U.S. to see if this is more acceptable and plus I don't know how many AAs are actually living in Nigeria. I find it difficult to believe with how largely populated Nigeria is that any particular tribe would become extinct because those that have moved to US or abroad have dated other cultures...

ifyalways: @OP, every tribe would accept or/and reject such relationship. It boils down to individual families.

Families decide nowadays not the whole village or tribe.

That makes sense that it would come down to an individual level. I guess my question then is more about percentages perhaps...of the two which do you think would have a larger percentage of families that would be accepting?

If a Nigerian man/woman was to date an African American woman/man, which culture would be more likely to accept such a union, assuming it would lead to marriage?
