chuckdee,
if you're using the magnum ms4348pe with the advanced remote me-arc50,
there is a button for turning off the charger completely. Also, you can program
the charger to cut-off and cut-in at certain times of the day, say from 6am to
6pm. This among many options make the magnum a very robust beast of an
inverter.
Nice!... I hv the remote and I will tinker to search for that setting within... Thanks GeorgeD

I have forgotten, but i think the magnum allows you to set the charge current to zero.

Nice work NiyiOmoIyunade and bigrovar!!
I run on grid from 6pm to midnight if available daily.
Once it's midnight, grid is dropped and I run off batteries till 6pm and the cycle repeats.

I never charge with grid though.
Hi Barezzi,
Please how did you achieve using the grid to power your AC load w/out the inverter charging the batteries at the same time? I use a Magnum Inverter and haven't been able to see a setting that will allow me to turn off the charger completely (can only regulate the charging rate)

I would ideally want an automated arrangement that would allow grid power to pass thru the inverter when available from 6pm to midnight w/out the inverter charging my batteries with that grid power

I apologise for going off topic but I need to solve two problems and need the most efficient way to do it. My personal workaround is largely inefficient. This is the first issue:
I recently acquired a dual-band NetGear router for large homes. It accepts LAN input. I have a MiFi and a Wireless Modem but both have limited coveragein and around the building.

What I want:
A 3G/4G device which accepts a SIM and has LAN output yet won't break the bank.

The second issue:
I need a WiFi extender which can plug into the LAN sockets of my Midnite Classics. I recall having read from one or two people here using them (dapsyra comes to mind). I want to use whatever it is you've used which works.
Hi Saipro,

Most routers with inbuilt 3G/4G Capability don't come very cheap. The tp-link TL-MR6400 (See attached pictures)will serve you as it has a sim slot and has Lan ports too. It goes for around 50k Here in Abuja.

For your Second issue, I use a TP-link wifi extender that has worked flawlessly for me. Not only does it give you a lan port for your midnight classic, it also extends and improves that your already existing wifi a whole lot... (see attached pictures.)

It was $20 when i bought it

@Chuckdee,
Actually, I have 2 fridges and 2 freezers.

The fridges are on inverter while the freezers cycle 9am to 4pm.

@ Barezzi, looking at your setup capacity from your signature, why are you still running your freezers on a timer??

I hv a much smaller array than yours and I found out that running the freezers on 24/7 consumes far less energy than turning it off and on intermittently.

I used this cheap wifi plug to monitor consumption via an app over a period of time to come to that conclusion. give it a try. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0178IC5ZY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My Journey into Renewable Energy.

2015! Yes 2015. That was the year I had to make a decisive and far reaching decision about the future of power generation and consumption in our "little" home. I approached my wife, (mind you, with caution) and my children to discuss this new project that could potentially reduce the astronomical cost of electricity (alas! In the future) in our "little" home. Solar power... using photovoltaic panels.

Let me back up a little bit... My street and indeed my entire neighbourhood gets roughly 20 to 22 hours of electricity in a week and sometimes, we would be waiting for electricity from the power company for a month or two. Oftentimes it's a transformer fault, high tension pole(s) dropping off like a sparrow. In many occasions, old and tired lines giving way after screaming for replacement for ages. To cut the long story short, we are often without power for a long stretch of time. The only option had been to run the portable generator. And this... brothers and sisters cost a small fortune monthly.
Congratulations on taking the bold step to go solar, you wont regret it by the time you totally optimize your setup. Kudos.

Just finally moved to my own modest house. Decided to finally take a chill pill on the race for the higher wattage and settle for efficiency on the consumption side. This allowed me to set aside some funds for putting a roof over my head all glory be to God. My 1.84kw panel is all the electricity I need for now. I will connect to the grid once am done with some finishing touches to the house.. I generate enough to provide me 24 hours electricity that meets every basic needs refrigeration, laundry, light, TV, kitchen stuff.

The house runs on LED spot lights the highest being the single 12w kitchen lights. Over night amps draw before sun rise is 75AH from a 24v 200ah battery. I had time regig my setup.. Power drill was a life saver.
Congrats on your new house.

Lithium prices would reduce to a point then it would go up. Lithium is a rare earth material concentrated in few places of the world. Once it goes mainstream it comes gold and the value would shoot up higher than manufacturing process can reduce. I am average lithium prices will not be crashing in a long time
Very true and this will happen sooner than later due to the higher adaption rate of EV's with many countries setting deadlines to stop producing ICE vehicles. However, there are emerging research into new battery tech such as solid state batteries and graphite Air chemistries.

NiyiOmoIyunade:
My Oga,

I had 8 pieces 6v 360ah US Battery L16E XC2 to make up a 48v battery bank which I recharged 99% exclusively from a 6.3kw PV array split 4.5kw to a MorningStar 60a MPPT and 1.8kw to an EP Solar 60a MPPT.

The first year with the batteries was pretty peachy - somewhere in their 6th month in production was when I added the extra 1.8kw array since I wanted to run larger loads e.g 1hp AC for some hours per day.

When I say peachy, I mean the the batteries were closely voltage matched under charge and discharge, seldom required watering (3 to 4 months intervals) and of course I had a PowerPulse desulfator plugged on from day one.

One day around the 1 year 1 month mark, I did a random fluid levels check and realised the fluid level on the battery on the negative inverter/solar cable had suddenly gone very low - this was like a wednesday and I had checked the weekend before and all batteries were good and well topped. I topped up and thought nothing more of it but alas this was to be the beginning of woes with this battery bank.

I typically come home late evening and I would notice the batteries were unusually warm with the electrolyte spilling out - this began the era of constant babysitting as I would literally watch weekends and see the electrolyte boiling at absorb voltage - after much troubleshooting and finnagling, I learned the hard way that my 360ah battery bank was choking on the 70amps net charge my Charge Controllers were trying to force feed them so I throttled down the charge amps on the MorningStar (only CC I know where one can limit the charging amps with just a software settings change).

Interestingly I had always known that flooded batteries did not like too fast a charge but this personal experience brought the lesson home clearly - all the clients where I have deployed a similar battery setup generate only a 40 to 45amps net charge into their batteries because they had smaller PV arrays so no issues arose.

Alas in my case, the damage was already done as I now moved from watering batteries every 4 months to now regularly watering and wiping off boiled out electrolyte and watching over the monthly equalization like a hawk and all this despite temperature compensation installed and working on my two controllers. At times I would just have to switch off the solar input MCB as the batteries would boil so much that I couldn't bear it.

The last straw was when a battery in the bank would suddenly cave/drop voltage under load, I would isolate the battery and charge fully and it would be fine only to have yet another battery do exactly the same thing. This issue ping ponged its way through 3 out of 8 batteries and I decided I had had enough as battery management was now becoming a full time job so I dumped the entire bank and ported to 800ah of maintenance free GEL batteries.

So far this new bank is swallowing 70amps net charge without a hiccup and max discharge is about 30% of capacity with voltage under load being a worst case 50v in the morning. I dumped my powerpulse desulfator and plan to buy battery balancers to keep the entire bank closely voltage matched.

So for my flooded bank absorb voltage was 14.8volts temperature compensated, equalize voltage was 15.1volts temperature compensated done every 30 days, charging amps was originally 70amps eventually throttled to 40amps yet the batteries would still boil over and run above 40°C, my average discharge was 50% DoD occassionally 65%. I reduced absorb voltage as low as 14.1 volts yet the boiling still continued - I did not realise the long term benefits and ruggedness I expected from Flooded batteries and though our stories may be different I have heard Saipro, Abunafiu, Oga Chris all recount various tales of woe and degrees of trouble with their Trojan flooded batteries.

Trojan and US Battery are two good names in the Flooded battery world but they have so far not impressed me with their on the field performance hence my transition back to maintenance free batteries.
Hi Niyi, much thanks for the lengthy explanation because I hv learned some personal lessons from it. I hv exact setup in batteries, that is 8 X 360ah US Battery L16E XC2 and a total of 4.5KW in panels. Surely the culprit is the 70amps being pumped into those batteries.. I hv had my setup since march, completely Off-grid and generate an average of 55Amps and since fridge and deep freezer are always on with other little electronics, 6-11Amps are always going towards them, batteries get around 40-45 amps and they have been running w/out issues so far. Hv topped up distilled water twice though around August and last in December, they are serving just like the day they were commissioned.

Note to self: Pls stop thinking about adding more panels shocked grin
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Chuckdee(m): 8:55am On Jan 30, 2018
NiyiOmoIyunade:
Makavele is right. The corect and easy way is to wait and buy all four batteries at a go.

It will be very easy to charge them fully and commission them for service that way.

If you buy 2 now and 2 later, IT SHOULD STILL WORK especially within 3 months BUT you may be faced with challenges balancing the old and new batteries and may face all sorts of horrors bringing them together to act like one well-matched giant battery as they ought.

Depending on how aggressively you have discharged the old batteries and so many other factors, adding the new set may become a breeze or the wrongest decision ever.

If you must buy and commission the batteries piecemeal then Flooded may be your best choice because you can perform a full charge and equalize cycle on the Flooded and hopefully be good. On the other hand are you ready for the regular checks and watering, corrosion management and other duties that maintaining a Flooded battery bank requires? I recently dumped my US Battery Flooded bank when they began to require as much attention as my Madam after their first year in service even though they were still performing well.

Quanta is a solid AGM battery - literally plug and play - but it cannot tolerate over charge or equalization at high voltages. For your scenario it will make for a simple and compact installation (12v vs 6v) and nearly zero maintenance or management - but you should definitely buy all four batteries you need at once if you want to go with Quanta - except you are willing to gamble with your investment.
@ Bolded...... I would really like to hear more about your experience with maintaining those flooded batteries and how difficult it really was for you to ultimately decide to abandon them totally and opt for maintenance-free batteries?? huh

In life.. S**t can happen. Go to Amazon / AliExpress review section, even the most highly related item have reviews that would shock you. Same with brick and mortal. It would be so nice to have a place like home depot in Nigeria but alas we do not have the customer base to support such. Kiekie, Juo and many other seller on here have handled thousands of deals that have gone smoothly without issues. How we handle conflicts matter alot.

Even oga George once had issues with someone who claim he got a wrong panel from what was advertised to him. In the end things were resolved. It is important that we always find path of least conflict in all our dealings. Here is an example.

I once bought some used panels from a member here. When the panels were delivered. Found out one had experienced burn out and had a wound. The other was ok but both didn't gave stickers to verify they were truly first grade panels that was claimed. I was very angry and at first felt cheated. Thankfully I calmly involved the seller about my observations. He was sorry and promised to send another panel to replace the bad one. He did.. And added yet another one even though I told him he would receive delayed payment. 2 day I gave 4 extra panel. The one with the burn out still works with almost zero degrade in harvest compared to the rest. And I got it for free. Today me and Seller are still in good terms.

How we handle conflict matters alot. I have once refunded a buyer of my PWM with a replacement after he complained of what I sold him. Till date I never got the replacement. I didn't complain or insult him. Even when he reach out to me recently. Throwing insult will not get any body anywhere.

For sellers : we learn everyday and am sure everyone would have taken a lesson or two from this episode.

Cover yourself : never give warranty beyond what you are given by the product manufacturer.

Never give warranty on a used product. It should be a case of buyers beware.

Spell out the terms of sale. Let the buyer know the level of support he is to expect from you.

No body knows it all. Our sellers have been great for the most part. We should not forget the customized service and support we get from them. Millions naira worth of transactions has taken place here without an hitch with both parties going home smiling. Let's remember that
Very well said.. Nothing else to add. Thank you Bigrovar
