makavele: Let me correct a misconception here . . . Take for example a 40A mppt controller on a 600W array connected to just a single 12V 100Ah battery On a very good day, during bulk charging the array is capable of pushing out 25-30 Amps But we all know it is best to charge batteries at one-tenth capacity (C10) i.e. in this example 10A; So your controller is pushing 30A, which is an overkill for the battery. Most people, like the poster above me, believe you can add or turn on some load to reduce the current entering the battery. This is a misconception and why is so?
[b]1. The PV array does not directly power any load connected to the inverter/battery bank.
2. What happens is that the battery is discharging and charging at the same time albeit very fast. 3. If for example, the total load turned on is 100W; and the PV is producing 150W; what happens is that the load will draw 100W from the battery (discharge); and at the same time the PV will pump in 100W (recharge) to the battery to replace what is lost and 50W is used to keep the battery in float (if it is already in float); or used to keep charging the battery if it isn't yet in float
SO back to our example, what if the CC is delivering 30A on a c10 rated battery . . if you like turn on all the load in the world; what is happening is that . . the CC is still sending in 30A to your battery and in turn your battery is powering the loads connected, be it 10A, 20A, 2A, 100A If the CC amp is greater than the load, the battery stays charged up if the load amps is greater than CC amp, the battery will start discharging even while being connected to solar.
Thanks The bolded is soo wrong and misleading. Please how do you then explain how people in advanced countries like US and Europe that are on reliable grid that almost never goes down but have Solar setups without a single battery bank and yet make use of energy generated by those panels??... lets not BOLDLY mislead newbies that come to this thread to learn |

bigrovar: This assumption is wrong in theory and in practise. Electricity flows from high potential to low potential.
Scenario 1 If say your PV is producing 1000w and your load is using 1200w, 1000w goes from your CC to your load, and the reminder 200w is taken from the battery.
Scenario 2 If your battery is full and your PV can potentially produce 1000w and your load is 1000w, the load from the PV goes straight to the inverter (Your battery is completely ignored.)
Scenario 3 If your PV can potentially produce 1000w and your load is using 500w then 500w goes from PV to load and unused 500wh would become potentials.
Scenario 4 if your battery is low and your PV is producing 800w but your load is using 800w,all 800w produced by the PV goes to the load. Non is left for the battery.
Remember like I said, electricity moves from high potential to low potential.. The lowest potential in all the above scenario is the load, not the battery. The battery always has a higher potential than the load, The battery charger in this case the PV/CC has the highest potential (so long as we are using a proper charger with the right voltage)
Its just against physics for a battery to draw electricity more than the load. The above is the theory.
For the practical, I have a Victron Battery Monitor BMV 700 the BMV comes with a current shunt which is connected to negative of the battery, inverter DC input negative cable and Controller dc output negative cable. The positive cable of the BVM connects to the battery.
The BMV monitors currents going into and out of the battery from the Inverter and CC. The BMV display shows gross net input and output to the battery hence 1 if my charge controller shows it is producing 24A and my load is 10A, the victron battery monitor shows 14A going into the battery. and this is confirmed by the battery voltage.
If I turn off the 10A load, I see the BMV showing 24A going into the battery. If I turn off the CC, the BMV will show -10A being drawn from the battery.
If my load is say 24A and CC is pulling 20A, the BMV shows -4A leaving the battery.
This idea that all power from the cc first goes to the battery and the load pulls it from the battery is false and against the principle of how electricity works. when I have time over the weekend I will demonstrate the truth of this. You are absolutely correct and I agree with all you wrote above and you are correct in each case scenario too. I hv Trimetric Battery monitor connected via a shunt that shows parameters such as Volt, AMPs in (+), AMPs out (-) and % full. Now when for example total AMP coming in from CC is showing 50Amps, and the load being consumed is about 20amps as shown on the magnum Inverter Monitor display, the amps in on the trimetric will be +30 Amps. |

earthrealm: so any idea why small strand cables are prefferred to the thicker less strands type as shown in the picture below. dont really understand the explanation in the pic
2ndly anybody using fangpusun/victron energy mppt charge controller. can the person confirm if it has equalization settings, from the manual its saying a software is needed to turn on the equalization setting The main reason it is recommended is because its much easier to bend and flex in tight spots. Although finely stranded cables are not required, they make installing and servicing the system easier and reduce stress on the battery and inverter terminals In short it is superior and thats why it is required to be used in Marine, Automotive, and Aircraft industries. If you can afford the higher cost per yard compared to other cables, why not?! |

pranil: I am a bit confused about ba3 . is it a type of battery or manufacturer name- A quick google search revealed only OLX ads and Nairaland. What is the make of battery? you may find the recommended settings on the manufacturer's web page Knowing battery chemistry is important before making the settings
see this link on morningstars webpage - https://www.morningstarcorp.com/morningstar-best-practices-battery-chemistry/
another excellent source is - http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_the_lead_acid_battery
I am doubtful if the SKG has temperature compensation or four stage adaptive charging looking at the picture. Good settings in morningstar should keep your battery at peak performance Laughing real hard at the bolded . ba3=battery (the present indomie generation has sworn to create an acronym for every conceived word ) |

OkwaIfugo: It takes someone with integrity and high self esteem coupled with the fear of God to return such.
There are also mistakes that is not allowed to occur in business.
The money is gone. Just forget about it. Take up the case against him if you can.
Court Order and police report will help you through his bank details. I TOTALLY disagree with your statement there. Why would his money be gone and forgotten when the error was to a known clientele that he has had prior transactions with? Remember also there is something called BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP and that starts once both parties do a successful transaction so why advise him to forget his money?? Even, have you never seen anyone mistakenly pay money into a random account number and yet have it returned just by a phone call to the wrong account owner?? The underlying problem here is that Nigerians are so cruel and wicked that they see every single opportunity as an opening to be 'sharp' and outsmart the next person.. Sheer wickedness and selfishness is the problem here. |

GeorgeD1: all, so finally here comes the head-to-head comparison between midnite solar classic 150 cc and the tristar mppt-60.
8 ) scalability, ease of expansion, etc perhaps the biggest selling point and over-aching advantage the midnite has over the tristar is its ability to produce between 80 to 96 amps of charging current with a maximum solar array size of up to 4,300w at 48v. that means as a user there is more room for expansion. you can start with a few panels and continue building up your system on an incremental basis by adding panels after panels without worrying about changing/upgrading the charge controller. the tristar on the other hand maxes out at 60 amps which translates to 2,300w at 48v. anything above this and the current limit alarm set in. - midnite classic is the winner for this round
9) conclusion as can be seen, each charge controller has its own strong points and not so strong points. also, they seem to match evenly in quite a few areas. at the end of the day, its much like comparing ronaldo and messi - both are kings in their own rights - or comparing apple and android. while one is a closed system and difficult to manipulate, the other is flexible and easily configurable - but they both excel in what they do. Lovely unbiased review indeed. Thanks GeorgeD. The Midnight Classic 150 is an excellent CC, and I have no regrets ever buying one. @ bolded above and just as dapsyra has rightly pointed out, it take take more than 4300W, I have a 4500 setup and it handles it very well. kiekie1: Welcome on board .. Nice you finally got the midnite order tru James ! My only dislike about midnite classic is the thermostatic fans which kicks in almost every time (2 underneath & 1 on top) & must be serviced when they get weak to avoid internal temp rise . Secondly it comes with real small 16mm ports for solar - battery cables , if you were using 25mm cables above on morningstar, you will find it a bit difficult to fix on midnite . . overall , its a nice mppt ! I also await users of the magnum mppt to attest -give a review on its ruggedness @Kiekie, The 2 fans kick in to always to cool down the CC when needed however, the top fan you mentioned is the Turbo Fan which seldom kicks in, infact I have had mine running for over 5 months and it has not for one day been activated. Its a no brainer that your CC should be installed in a well ventilated area to also aid in air-flow and cooling. The fans are very reliable too and I know people that have used classic 150 for over 5 years w/out a fan failure... Note that the "no fan" units (Tristar for example) generally can not handle as much power as the fan-cooled CC's like the Classic 150, and require much larger heat sinks to manage what they do. It would be interesting to test the actual operating temperatures of two comparable units and see how the cooling difference affects longevity. If the non-fan type really runs even a bit warmer it will have shorter life, all else being equal. I think its a great feat to achieve upto 96V in such a small form factor like that of the 150. |

battleaxe: My good people, anyone willing to share their PV generation in the last few weeks since the rains started?
I am getting just about 30% of installed capacity at peak which gives me some concern. Most times, a miserly 10-15%... and it's not raining!
Thanks o! If you say 10-15% when its not raining and with good sunshine, i think its poor. A visual inspection of your setup is a good place to start off trouble-shooting from. I have been pleasantly surprised getting some very handsome harvest all this season. I think the cool weather and dust-free panels are helping. I have seen 4,491W out of my 4,500W total capacity at peak sun intensity (11-1pm ish)

bigrovar: Done all that. Problem is Nairaland is huge and is valued multi million dollars. Hence makes millions for it's owner monthly. All this off the back of content creators like us. The least that could be done is at least upgrade the system to 2017. I am a member of many forums from xda to power forums to solar talk. nairaland is the biggest and the one with the worst user experience. It's still based on simple machine forum when it should have moved to something premium like vbulletin which is what most major forum is based on. It's like having a billion dollars contract to deploy off grid solar but you did the job with sunshine solar panels + Roy solar pwm charge controller. That's the metaphor for how NL is being managed. |
