PoliticsU.K. Investigates Winners' Chapel Over Alleged Misappropraition Of N4bn Tithes by Chukwuemeka007(op): 4:59pm On Aug 17, 2013
United Kingdom's Charity Commission is investigating David Oyedepo's Winner Chapel ove misappropriation of at least 16 million pounds taken as tithes between 2008 and 2011.Over 1 million pounds is reported to have been sent to the Nigerian headquarters of the church between 2009 and 2011, the church's account shows.Spokesperson of the charity commission told reporters that investigations "regarding the charity's management and policies" are on-going. "We have considered documents and information shared by the trustees and our case is continuing," she said.
The congregants of the U.K. branch of the church are allegedly given credit cards forms to make donations as they arrive for service. The forms are inscribed with a verse from the Bible's Book of Corinthians which reads, "God loveth a cheerful giver." Documents submitted to the Charity Commission show the parent organisation of the church, £8 million rich World Mission Agency, makes paltry donations to charity causes. Its books shows it donated N2.6 million (£10,500) to Great Ormond Street Children's hospital and N2.2 million (£9,000) to Christian Aid for the Haiti earthquake appeal and N625, 000 (£2,500) to charities in the Lewisham area of London. In contrast, it transferred N81.2 million (£324,683) and N165.8 million (£663,532) to world headquarters in Nigeria in 2010 and 2011 respectively. In 2009 and 2010 N48, 000,000 was set aside for "welfare assistance" for unnamed "certain member of the church."
The Church also claimed it spent N37.25million "for charitable activities in Africa." David Oyedepo, who is believed to be the richest pastor in Nigeria, lives a life of opulence. He, through his church, owns at least three private jets and one of the most expensive private universities in the country. The Nigerian headquarters of the church prides itself as having the biggest church auditorium in the world. The auditorium sits over 50,000 congregants."All of us have a growing concern about any kind of mercenary response that puts cash at the centre of Christian faith. I challenge any movement, including Winners, to be open and account for its money wherever it goes because it comes originally from hard-working faithful people," said Joel Edwards, a senior figure in the British evangelical movement and director of the Micah Challenge which is running Exposed, a global anti-corruption campaign directed at churches, business and government.

EducationASUP Preparing To Resume Strike by Chukwuemeka007(op): 10:40am On Aug 14, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) announced the decision to suspend the nationwide strike on July 16, 2013. Unfortunately, it has just been a pause.ASUP is gearing for another industrial action, which would commence after next week, and would be indefinite. The union made the appropriate statement on August 13, 2013, Tuesday during the mass protest to "save public education" in Lagos.
"The suspension of the strike will expire next week and up till now government has not done any single thing in the agreement," said Chibuzo Asomugha, ASUP's National President. After 81 days of inactivity in polytechnics across Nigeria, the union decided to suspend the strike following the level of progress made in negotiations with the government.ASUP said that it suspended the strike to allow the Senate Joint Committee on Education to liaise with relevant government agencies with a view to tackling the union's demands within one month.
Among ASUP's demands include the need for constitution of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics; migration of the lower cadre to CONTISS 15 salary scale; and the "worrisome condition" of state-owned polytechnics in the country."Government should stop paying lip service to public education," said Mr. Asomugha.

The serene, calm and peaceful ambience of the Federal University of Technology Owerri was disrupted following a robbery of the post graduate hostel's reading room last Thursday night.
According to an eye-witness report, a gang of about 6 armed robers stormed the reading room at about 10pm Thursday last week, taking away readers' laptops, phones and other personal belongings. Thier attempt to rob other rooms was foiled when one of the victims raised an alram that informed the school's security about what was happening.
The Nekede division of the Nigerian Police Force was later on apprised of the unfortunate incident. In reaction to the robbery, members of the Man O' War paramilitary group on campus imposed a 10pm-5am curfew around the hostels' environs and also closure of the hostels within this period and also stopped students from going to night classes. No official report has been given by either the SUG excos nor the Commander-in-Chief of Man O' War Nigeria, Imo state, FUTO Command.
CelebritiesMajek Fashek Attends & Performs At COSON Awards Night by Chukwuemeka007(op): 8:59am On May 31, 2013
A mild drama ensued at the Oriental hotel, Lekki, Lagos, venue of the just concluded Song Award organised by the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) last Saturday night when Nigeria’s reggae legend and guitarist, Majek Fashek stormed the place to thrill his fans once again after years of being missing on stage.

Clad in rugged jersey and jacket with a brown cap, Majek who has been incapacitated for a long time now arrived the venue some minutes to the end of the event and hell was let loose. Shouts of ‘the Rainmaker’ rented the airas he moved from one end of the expansive hall to another, greeting and hugging some of his contemporaries whom he has not seen for years.

Interestingly, Majek’s song, “Send Down the Rain” won the best song of the 1980s at the event.Even though, his sight evoked sympathy, some of the guests who were familiar with Majek’s ordeal could not believe their eyes as the Rainmaker was virtually in high spirit. Still looking shabby and frail, Majek bubbled with lifewhile the event lasted.

Upon spotting highlife maestro, Victor Uwaifo who was one of the dignitaries that graced the awards night, Majek immediately prostrated before him and later, requested to perform on stage. But the audience would not allow him to do so as they wanted him to close the event. After Iyanya’s ‘erotic performance’, Majek mounted the stage and took the audience in a musical voyage. He reeled out some of his evergreen songs to the delight of the audience.

When he sang ‘ Send Down the Rain’, everyone in the hall took to the floor as they sang along with him. His performance that night reaffirmed his place as a reggae legend.Despite missing the stage for a long time. Majek who waltzed his way into the hearts of music fans in the late 80s and early 90s with his debut album

“Prisoner of Conscience” containing the hit track ‘Send Down The Rain’ released in 1987, still retains his stagecraft, vocal dexterity and followership. Standing ovation however greeted his ‘unexpected’ performance even as he hinted that his latest album is due to be released soon.

Meanwhile, the event was organised to honour musicians, songwriters and composers who had written and sung great songs from 1960s till date. Victor Uwaifo’s “Joromi,” was chosen as the best song of the 1960s while Prince Nico Mbarga’s “Sweet Mother” won the 1970s category. While Femi Kuti’s “Wonder Wonder” emerged the best song of the 1990s, for the new millennium (2000), Kehinde Akinbode’s “Olorioko” was awarded thebest contemporary Afro song. The contemporary pop song was awarded to Tu Face Idibia with “African Queen.”Sunny Nneji won contemporary highlife category with “Oruka.” Idibia won contemporary afro with “Iheneme,” while Psquare were honoured for their hit song “Chop My Money” and the best song for contemporary highlife of the new era was awarded to Jude Okoye for“Baby Oku.”The award ceremony was part of activities marking the COSON week.

PoliticsNAFDAC Seizes $250,000 Worth Contaminated Bread Improver by Chukwuemeka007(op): 2:22pm On May 29, 2013
An estimated $250,000.00 worth of contaminated bread improver (Edlen Dough Conditioner) imported from the USA has been confiscated at the Onne Port in Rivers State by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.NAFDAC head of Ports Inspection Directorate in Port Harcourt, Dr. Musa Umar, said the product loaded in 10 containers was first suspected by NAFDAC officials at the port in January while thorough examination on April 16 and re-examined in the presence of the importer, clearing agent and manufacturer were done on May 2. He said findings in the series of investigations confirmed that the product imported by Dorcas-Jedi Investment Nigeria Ltd had already deteriorated and unfit for human consumption by the degree to which the product's integrity had been compromised."Some cartons were soaked and there were evidence of bloated cans and products spilling on to the boxes. Full examination was attempted for all the 10 containers but no product with acceptable physical attributes was seen," Umar said.
He said the economic loss for the end users (bread bakers) would have been enormous if the product was allowed to enter the market as its utility value had been lost.A representative of the product's importer, Dr. Ottih Ezuma attributed its spoilage to long delay from the shipping company that shipped it from Savannah Sea Port in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.Customs Area II Command Controller, Magaji Mohammed, who handed the products over to NAFDAC said his command had likewise handed over to NAFDAC 426 bottles of naturelite children's multivitamin discovered to have expired. The spoilt products still in custody at government warehouse, Onne Port are to be destroyed by NAFDAC Enforcement Unit after necessary official documentation.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, has reaffirmed its decision to proceed on an indefinite strike from Saturday, June 1, in 18 states that are yet to implement the N18,000 minimum wage as well as the 27.5 per cent Teachers Enhanced Allowance, TEA.The states include Benue, Cross River, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Oyo and Edo.Others are Nasarawa, Zamfara, Plateau, Taraba, Borno, Kogi, Niger and Sokoto states. Already, teachers in the affected states have been directed by the NUT headquarters in Abuja to indicate their readiness to proceed on the strike by signing their names and signatures in special registers provided at their local government headquarters in the affected states.NUT sources said the response had been overwhelming as almost all the teachers involved had indicated their readiness to embark on the strike. The affected teachers were given up till today to indicate their interest in the strike. In Abuja, the NUT National President, Michael Olukoya told newsmen, yesterday, that the union had resolved that the strike would proceed if nothing was done at the expiration of its deadline.
Olukoya said that the decision to embark on an indefinite strike was taken on April 17, at the union's National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held in Asaba, Delta State.According to Olukoya, the Senate Committee on Education had on May 23, invited the union officials and the governors whose states were yet to implement the allowance to a meeting over the threat by the union. He, however, said that the meeting with the Senate Committee was stalled, pointing out that the committee had appealed to the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, to plead with the affected state governors to comply.
"Some of the state governors are yet to implement the N18,000 minimum wage, which was approved by the Federal Government."For us in the NUT, the strike is the only remaining option left for us now. We have been very patient since 2008," he said.
