Four years after getting married, couples
with longer courtships who lived together
before their wedding had less frequent sex

sex, according to a study published in the
Journal of Sex Research.

The study of about 100 couples also found
that lovebirds who lived together before
marriage were less sexually satisfied than
those couples who didn’t live together
before marriage.
And sex aside, living together before
marriage also could spell doom for the
relationship’s future. A 2018 study from the
Journal of Marriage and Family found that
couples who lived together before marriage
also had a higher rate of divorce after five
years of marriage.

But long-term couples shouldn’t get
discouraged, says Logan Levkoff, a New
York-based sexologist.
“The study is painfully deceiving,” Levkoff
tells The Post. “When someone lives with
a partner prior to getting married, they have
access to sex, so that’s why early on
there’s [not an increase in] frequency.”
Statistics when it comes to people’s sex
lives, she warns, aren’t really applicable to
the general population.

“Living together with someone comes with
responsibilities and general stresses of life,
and you prioritize things,” Levkoff says. “If
you don’t cohabitate before marriage,
marriage is the first time you have 24/7
access to sex, and it’s new.”
And besides, sex by the numbers doesn’t
give the whole picture. The study also
found that couples who were together for a
longer period of time before they wed had
more consistent levels of sexual
satisfaction over time, compared to those
who dated for a shorter period of time. For
those couples, things tended to fizzle out
four years later.
“The longer you’ve been with someone —
and this isn’t a bad thing — there’s no way
to mimic the novelty of a new relationship.
Can there be a shift over time if you’ve
been together longer? Absolutely. But that
doesn’t mean you can’t connect and get
back to that.”
