There's no way you'll understand this as much as you understand Ebonyi. I know Ika being part of Anioma share lots of words with the Anambra guys. Many Ika words found their way into Anambra through Aniocha Oshimili but still, there's no way you understand Ika as much as Ebonyi. SImilarities between Ika and Owerri is nothing significant. Many of you guys only try to blow it out of proportion
From your name or nick you bear one can easily deduce that you are a Benin guy or simply of Bini origin.... So I it doesn't come as a surprise seeing you picking straws to hold your leaking arguments... Sorry if you are really from ika as you alleged which I seriously doubt, you are just one of the descendants of the Benin refugees in ika land trying to annex ika to be pro Benin because of its close proximity to Edo... This Ika actually sounds a lot more Igbo than those other clips.
This is Just like most Igbo Dialects of Ebonyi people mixed with the prominent owerri "ri" .... Am an Anambrarian and I understood about 40 to 50 percent of the review just the same margin I do understand Ebonyi dialects and this is my first time of hearing the language...

This people on context of language don't have the stand to say their language isn't Igbo dialect.. It would sound more reasonable to a third party if their stance on not being Igbo stems from not having Igbo consciousness which is the negative side of igbos nature in being republicans with loose and many dispersed fragmented dialect

As I normally tell anyone who cares, the strength of Igbo as a prosperous tribe comes from our Republican and egalitarian nature with everyone not recognising the other as superior and believing they possess the can-do spirit as the other WHILE on the other hand, our problem as a fragmented ununited heterogeneous people stems from same. But I believe as we evolve we will overcome this and come to recognise that our weakness can be our strength if united.

From that myth, it's clear that Satan is ojuwu in Ika but with the advent of Christianity, the word is getting replaced with the Igbo word, ekwensu. Nobody ever say ojuwu except in some rare cases where it's used to describe a very wicked person or someone that's very wicked is nicknamed ojuwu.

To call someone is hii in Ika but with the advent of telephones, a new word (kpor) has been introduced. People use hii for calls generally but when it comes to calling on phone, everybody speak kpor. There are countless of instances. This is what I was trying to explain how Christianity and many modern concepts is Igbonizing us.

Very good question. I think Redbonesmith is one of those Delta Igbos, particularly people from the Aniocha/Oshimili axis who have lived a reasonable amount of the time in the South East and really see that there's not much difference between the SE and where they come from. But he also seems as an objective and politically correct person, who doesn't believe that his opinion should drown those of others. One trend i have noticed is that an Enuani person who has mixed a lot with SE Igbos tend to be more accepting of their Igboness than one who has never lived in the SE before.
Ya well said, I have one working under me, he is enuani, I I use to av one from Agbor as a marketer and one kwale driver... They all mixed with majority SE Pple and converse in central Igbo... If you think a non Igbo is in the best possible to tell you if Igbo is a hard language or not (compared to Bini?). I as an Ika man is not the best person to ask because I have a high understanding of how both languages work. but in my opinion, Bini is a more difficult language than Igbo. I know a thing or two about the Phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics and pragmatics. In my quest to have better understanding of Ika language, I found out that Ika language is rooted in two languages, that is Igbo and Bini that's how I did a little research in both languages. A present day Ika man is born to automatically understand more Igbo than Bini, in the course of my little quest, I found too many similarities in many aspects of Bini and Ika languages. I also found too many similarities in Ika Igbo, and even Igbo and Bini. But all aspects of Ika languages lies between the two languages. I have seen some people talk how Ika adopted Ika adopted Bini intonation, inflection and accents. This is very laughable. Intonation, inflection and accents don't change easily. but word meanings can easily be influence that's why no matter how educated a Calabar man is, he speak English with Calabar accents.

And If Ika is Ika people generally, why the differentiation between Ika Bini and Ika people?
I won't argue with you on which of the languages is easier to learn than the other since I am an Igbo and can't see the challenges non Igbo complain of neither have I tried learning Bini to compare both...in which ever way I have no authority to make an assertion in that area BUT am quoting what majority of Nigerian do say..."Igbo is very hard to learn and understand"... This is a normal saying among Nigerians and Dts wea I base my conclusions on!...

For the ika Bini and ika pple , I tot I made dt clear ... When I used the term ika Bini I mean ika Pple dt r pro Bini y ika Pple means all ika Pple wether pro Igbo or pro Bini... U can also detect the difference btwn them from dis explanation

This your comment is laughable. so because people mostly migrate from more densely populated places to less denser populated places, it's not possible for people to ever migrate from Anioma to the East? For your information, there are many towns in the East that trace their origin to Anioma. there are many cultures existing in the East that has Anioma origin. there are also words and names existing in the East today that have Anioma origin. it's even possible that the Ubulu Uku you used for your instance founded those Ubulu communities in the East. some
You still running round the same centre, I maintain all igbo speaking communities outside east migrated from same source from the east and it can't be the other way round... Don't worry I will give you a reference dictionary for clearer understanding...

Weaker Igbo... This is not to say their Igbo is inferior to other Igbo dialect..no no no! Infact their dialect is closer to central Igbo than some igbo dialects find in the east e.g ezza... I used the term "weaker Igbo" to connote the variations and changes that the dialect have evolved into away from its parents source which is central Igbo..this is possible becos in a language continuum , words are borrowed, intonation changes and pronouciations differs and this is how dialects are born.. So the bone of contention in dt usage is just comparison btw the ika Igbo dialects and its parents source of east!

Igbo difficult to learn... I must be asking you about this cos u as a non Igbo is in a better position to answer dt since most non igbo Pple asked betwn the three major languages which are most difficult to learn always come up with the answer as Igbo. Wether they are doing that with sheer malicious intents and hatred for igbos is their problem but personally to me I believe Igbo is difficult for non igbos simply because of our many words for one thing or one words dt has many different meaning depending on the context is being applied to.. Many non igbos who told me they tried learning Igbo complained mostly of this , another thing they complained about is our man double consonant alphabets that makes proper pronunciation difficult...

Ika Bini... Ika Pple with Bini ancestry... Usually very visible thru their surnames or in some cases language like oza-ngogo pple

You and I know how dictionaries are written. They pick a word and compile all the possible meanings of that word. Anioma was in the scope of the research and they included Obi being a place where the founder of a community and the Kings Palace because that's how it's being used in Anioma.

I still stand by my earlier comment on how many words being used by both Ika /Anioma and the East have Ika/Anioma origin. But these guys erroneously believe that every of these words must have Eastern origin. I agree that majority have Eastern origin but there are some that has been proven to be of Anioma origin. There are also others whose origin has been lost. But these guys don't ever agree on any having Anioma origin. Some Edo words possibly have Ika Origin too. Even some words shared between Edo and Igbo were passed from Edo to Igbo through Ika and some were passed from Edo to Igbo through Ika. Some have original Ika/Anioma original but passed to both Igbo and Edo at different times. I'm saying this because these guys are very quick to point out how a particular word also exist somewhere in the East, how there is an Ubulu and Aboh in the East ignoring the fact that the existence of such words and places might be because of migration and intermigration of people from Anioma to and also those places. Some of the people that migrated to those places might or might not be of Edo ancestry.
Mr. Man stop muddling things up to suit ur every asinine conceptions and speculations... Saying u agree with sometins he said is just another ploy by u with hidden edges to subtly blackmail and coerce him into agreeing with your charade and fiasco submissions from obviously ur isolated cranium

Let me school you, People migrate from a more concentrated and denser areas to other lesser concentrated areas and that is why in history it is always claimed and rigthly that Pple with same name and characteristics of another Pple in a more denser or concenrated area must av come or migrated from that denser area and not the other way round... As people with common ancestry multiply and expand they move from their ancestral lands to other lands carrying the name of the place they r coming from, culture and borrow few things from the aborigines if they met any... East has a more dense and concentration of igbos than in Anioma and ika and therefore it is right to say , the Igbo language, culture, name of towns and so on only came to Anioma and ika because of the migrations from the igbos denser east to these lands and it can never be the other way round... The ubulus find in Anioma must have find Thr way out of east to the present Anioma land and reverse can't be the case....
CultureRe: Delta (and Rivers) Igbos by Chysler(m): 1:51pm On Mar 10, 2017
Ika Pple are igbos... Dt they borrowed certain words from thr close by Edo neighbours is normal and beside history has it dt many Bini Pple flee Bini land during harsh conditions from its monarch thrones... Many of them dt settled in ika land as history has it are the highest conveyors o Bini cultures and languages dt rubbed off on ika Pple, There is no way Bini Pple dt has strong cultural and historical background can migrate to ika land and lost their language and names and become igbonised by a more weaker igbos at the fringe borders with Edo land... It shld have been the other way round because one, Igbo is very hard to learn compare to other languages, two, the close proximity of Bini to ikaland would have ensured majority of what ika Pple speak today to be purely Bini or Edo language with stints of Igbo but today reverse is the case..... This simply showed dt igboland extends clearly across the Niger in a continuum till the borders of Edo state and the miniority Bini descendant Pple in ika land are notin but migrants and asylum seekers from ancient Bini empire... Ikas are aborigines of present ika land and a igboland and dialect continuum...

For the claims by ika igbo pple and being screamed loudest by ika bini Pple dt all ika Pple come from Bini kingdom is notin but laughable becos even in Onitsha dt are igbos still trace their origin from Bini... It doesn't mean dt majority of the aborigines of those lands are Bini Pple no!... The simple explanation why Pple like tracing Thr origin from Bini is becos of the unarguably great influence Bini wielded in its time both within and outside it direct territorial influence...Pple naturally like associating with greatness and exploits such as Bini kingdom had in its time... Another explanation is that yes there are real Bini migrants in those lands outside Bini kingdom, this Pple as said b4 are Pple who flee the harsh conditions in the kingdom or Pple who are banished and seeked asylums in those foreign lands and in most cases they introduced Bini styled monarchy in these their land of migration and subsequently other aborigines of this land join in saying they came from Bini after many years!

RedboneSmith:
Sigh.

If you had translated 'Ime Obi' for me, it would have aided this discussion. The 'obi' in 'Ime Obi' is not a person, is not 'a king'; it is a geographical location, and that is a very relevant point to note in all this. But I will come back to that.

Now to Ovbie. As far as I can ascertain, there is no word like that in Bini. The word is Ovbi, and it has nothing to do with kingship. It means child; no connotations of royalty whatsoever.

Ovie is not a corruption of this Ovbie (which is not even a true word to begin with; like I said the word is Ovbi.) Rather Ovie in Urhobo/Isoko is cognate with Ogie in Bini and Ojie/Oje in Esan. They all mean the same thing. Ovbie/Ovbi is not in the picture at all.

Note that I said 'cognate'. There was no borrowing involved. All these languages are related (Edoid languages), and as such inherited certain words in common from their common ancestor language (Proto-Edoid). Of course due to the linguistic phenomenon of sound shifts over the course of centuries, the 'j' in the Esan version of the word now varies as 'g' in Bini and 'v' in Urhobo and Isoko.

Coming to Obi. Based on this, if you want to claim that Obi came from Bini, then ovbi (child) is a very very weird source --- it did not even serve as the source in the Ovie example as you thought.

An Igbo origin for Obi is most plausible, although I will still give Anioma (more specifically Aniocha) credit for semantic innovation in the way the word came to be used in the Anioma area.

'Obi' (same intonation, same everything with Anioma 'Obi' ) in Igboland means the central building or court from which the head of a household, or the head of a kindred or a quarter or a clan lords it over his dependents. In loose terms, 'Obi' is a palace. Seeing any relationship with kingship yet? Referring to someone by something it is closely associated with is a common metonymic device, eg. Pharaoh = Great House.

When you understand that 'Obi' started out as a fixed place/location before it became a person, 'Ime Obi' begins to make sense.
Thanks you did Justice to that, but for clarity purposes, I want to explain the 3 meanings of Obi in Igbo language

1..(obi-compoud or courtyard) Just like Redbone rightly pointed out, obi can mean the central head compound of a family and can be referred to as where major family issues are trashed by the family elders e.g one can say obi Nnam meaning my fathers compound or obi Eze meaning king's compound e.t.c ... General obi in this aspect refers to a household living arena that's y someone can say in Igbo "ebem bi" meaning where I live.. The "bi" meaning "live" is just a verb of the noun "obi" meaning "compound" or courtyard. It is also worthy to note that obi as a living quarter in Igbo has rank or levels... N that's why we have what is called "isi obi' meaning " head compound" where extended family members leave there own individual "obis" and gather to discuss issues or take council from the most senior member of the family or kindred who is usually the most senior male member of such family who inherited the original ancestral compound from where the other family members dispersed from... This now leads to the second meaning of obi in Igbo land

2...(obi- kingship) ... If you understand the first explained meaning of obi, you would have figured its relationship with kingship in Igbo context... Obi as with regards to king is more pronounced in kingship because the kings palace is where the elders of different kindreds and family clans of a particular village or town, leaving there own "isi obis (a kindreds head compound)" to gather at "obi Eze ( Kings court or compound)" representing their individual kindreds to discuss issues pertaining to the kingdom. Looking closely one can see the correlation between the meaning of obi as associated with kingship in igboland. Therefore the kings obi is seen as the obi of all obis in the community or one can rightly substitute the name of the community or kingdom to be for instance Obi of Agbor or Obi of Onitsha... One can now see how individual obis rose to the level of isi obi as with regards to kindreds and then graduated to highest level of the obi Eze as with regards to the king... One can also explain it to be like this ... The individual obi is just man lording over his household, isi obi is the male head of a kindred lording over the households dt made up the kindred why the obi Eze is the kings court ruling over their entire houseldholds in the kingdom in which the isi obis and individual obis are rightly under it! I hope that explains dt clearly...

3... ( obi- heart).... This also has a relationship with being "head" as with the above explained two meanings . in Igboland it is believe and rightly that human heart is the main engine of the human body and therefore seen as the centre life source of the human being and that's y in Igbo language the heart is called obi with its regard as the life source or head dt governs whether one is alive or dead... Normally when one is being checked to be alive or dead u check the heart beat.. Therefore the heart is the centre ruling other parts of the body therefore it is called obi in Igbo but the difference between this obi and the previous two is in its pronunciation . in pronouciation it tends to go down y the previous two sounds goes up in pronouciation.

I hope I did Justice to that and cleared none igbos who think obi king title has no Igbo origin!

Unmask Chino, the guy is from Edo. He's causing more harm to Igbo unity than every other person
Afam4eva:
You see what i'm saying. You can't have a tribe and not have people like Chino or Abagworo. they must always exist. There's no proof whatsoever to know whether or not these people are Igbo but we have to accept who they say they are but we definitely cannot put a sensitive thing in their hands lest they destroy us.
You Guys are now leaving the substance and chasing shadows ...satisfying the malicious intents of our adversaries... U can choose to ignore them and focus on what the thread is meant for...

What do you know about Awka and Nnewi?
Mr. Man stop giving this guy undue audience... Can't you get it?? He is not an Igbo man not to talk of being from Anambra... All the things he is posting here about Anambra any average internet user can get that online... Hebis one of the malicious elements trolling online seeking the disunity of Ndiigbo... I have never for once hear the kind of rubbish he is posting here ... No sane Igbo man from any of the eastern states will say dis rubbish... Pls stop giving him undue audience to display his evil intents... They fear the unity of Ndiigbo Dts y they are doing all dis.. Believe me, many of them are being sponsored.... Allow him fizzle out like nonentity he is.. They will be watching as their evil swallows them up and snuff every life happiness out of them leaving them totally miserable and better off dead as igbos unite and achieve dt great thing they are afraid of... Just like we sing in songs back then... Anambra and IMO are umunne... Not just them Anambra, IMO, Enugu, Abia, ebonyi, ikwerre, etche, ndoni, ndokwa, ika, ukwuani, enuani, kwale etc..we are all brothers wether we agree or disagree...

Leave the guy let his wickedness consume him as the holy scripture said..."the wickedness of the wicked shall consume the wicked"
