Nairaland GeneralTurkey Launches Military Operation In Northern Syria by classicalbenson(op): 2:47pm On Oct 09, 2019
Turkey has launched a military operation in northern Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other senior officials have said, as Kurdish fighters reported that warplanes were attacking the region.
Several large explosions rocked the north-east Syrian town of Ras al-Ain, on the border across from the Turkish town of Ceylanpınar, a CNN Turk reporter said, adding that the sound of planes could be heard above.
He said smoke could be seen rising from buildings in Ras al-Ain.
Kurdish military leaders inside Syria have been braced for an attack since Donald Trump announced earlier this week that US troops were withdrawing from the area.
Erdoğan said the offensive, dubbed “Operation Peace Spring”, would aim to eliminate threats from the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and Islamic State militants, and enable the return of Syrian refugees in Turkey after the formation of a “safe zone” in the area, he said.
“Our mission is to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area,” he said on Twitter. “We will preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and liberate local communities from terrorists.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the Turkish government said the US president had handed it the leadership of the military campaign against Islamic State, and warned its forces would be crossing into Syria “shortly”.

Nairaland General10 Things You Might Not Know About The Nobel Prize by classicalbenson(op): 8:46pm On Oct 08, 2019
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish inventor who created new types of explosives. He made millions, and bequeathed nearly all of his fortune to establishing the prizes named for him. Read on for some surprising facts about the Nobel Prizes, whose honorees in six categories are always dynamite in their fields.
1. A MISTAKEN OBITUARY GAVE ALFRED NOBEL THE IDEA FOR THE PRIZES.
The story goes that Alfred Nobel was inspired to establish his awards in 1864 after a French newspaper mistakenly ran his obituary, called "The merchant of death is dead." Nobel didn't want that to be his legacy, and began thinking of more productive ways to be remembered for posterity. (The obituary was supposed to be for Nobel's younger brother Emil, who died while experimenting with nitroglycerine in their father's factory.)
The Nobel Prizes are announced in October and awarded December 10 each year, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's actual death. He died of a stroke at the age of 63 in 1896.
2. ONE OF THE NOBEL PRIZE CEREMONIES TAKES PLACE IN NORWAY.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo and presented by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, while the other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm and presented by the King of Sweden. Alfred Nobel planned it that way in his will:
"The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiological or medical works by the Caroline Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm; and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting.
3. THERE'S NO NOBEL PRIZE FOR ECONOMICS.
Notice that Nobel didn't mention economics in his will: that's because the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences is not a "Nobel Prize." It's technically the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Sweden's central bank created the endowment in 1968.
4. THE NOBEL PRIZES COME WITH CASH.
Nobel Prize winners take home a diploma, a gold medal, and some cold, hard cash. In 2019, winners of " full Nobel Prizes" are awarded 9 million Swedish kroner, or almost $910,000.
5. ORGANIZATIONS CAN WIN THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.
Only individuals can be nominated for the Nobel Prizes in medicine, chemistry, literature, and physics, as well as the economics prize. Recent organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize include the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (2017), the European Union (2012), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007).
6. UP TO THREE INDIVIDUALS CAN WIN EACH NOBEL PRIZE.
For teams larger than three, the committee will choose who gets left out. If two people win, the prize money is split equally. If three people win, the awarding committee chooses how to divide the prize.
7. PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY'VE BEEN NOMINATED.
Nobel Prize nomination records are kept sealed for 50 years after the award is given. Winners don't know they're nominated until they win. So go ahead, assume you almost won the Nobel Prize.
8. THERE ARE NO POSTHUMOUS NOBEL PRIZE NOMINATIONS.
Eleanor Roosevelt, James Joyce, Mahatma Gandhi, and many others will never be able to bask in the Nobel spotlight. Gandhi was this close to winning: he'd been nominated a number of times and had just been nominated a third time days before his 1948 assassination. Geir Lundestad, a former director of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, called Gandhi's absence from the list of Nobel laureates "the greatest omission" in the prize's history. If you're awarded the Nobel Prize but die before the December 10 ceremony, however, you're still a winner.
9. ALFRED NOBEL ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO GIVE AWARDS FOR WORK FROM THE PRECEDING YEAR.
That criteria occasionally meant honoring ideas in the sciences that weren't sufficiently tested or investigated. Case in point: Johannes Fibiger's 1926 discovery that parasitic worms allegedly caused cancer in rats. ( They don't.) Now most scientific discoveries and innovations are honored after they've stood the test of time.
10. EVENING WEAR IS A MUST FOR NOBEL LAUREATES.
Nobel laureates are required to give a public lecture within six months of accepting their award. Most of them fulfill the obligation during Nobel Week in Stockholm. Then, at the end of the week, they get to party. The Nobel banquet includes live music, a three-course dinner, dancing, and
a strict dress code. Men must wear white tie, consisting of "a black tailcoat with silk facings, sharply cut away at the front; black trousers with two rows of braid down each leg, white stiff-fronted shirt, white stiff wing collar attached to the shirt with collar studs, white bow tie, white low-cut waistcoat, black dress socks and black formal shoes." Women have it a little easier, with no restrictions on the color or design of their evening gowns. Long gloves and a shawl are optional.

Nairaland GeneralChinese Man On The Run For 17 Years Found In Cave By Police Drone by classicalbenson(op): 10:36pm On Sep 30, 2019
Chinese police reportedly used drones to track down a convicted human trafficker who had been on the run for 17 years and was living in a cave.
Song Moujiang, 63, who was jailed for trafficking women and children, had evaded police capture after escaping a prison camp, Yilaochang Farm in Sichuan province, in March 2002, the BBC reported .
He later fled to a tiny cave that was less than “two square meters” and lived an isolated existence, according to the Yonghsan police’s online WeChat account .
Police were only alerted to his whereabouts in the mountains near his hometown in Yunnan province, south-west China, earlier this month.
They struggled to find him due to the steep cliff slopes and complex terrain, according to the BBC. They launched an operation of additional drones after initial investigations failed. On 19 September, Yongshan police spotted a blue coloured steel tile on the cliff and domestic rubbish near the cave.
They said that that after an hour’s search on foot, they discovered the “the unkempt face” of Moujiang. According to the police, he had not bathed or washed his clothes in years and had such poor communication skills he struggled to talk to officials.
He has now been returned to jail.

owk...also one of the hardest part of the body to be washed clean
HealthWhat Purpose Does The Belly Button Serve? by classicalbenson(op): 9:12pm On Sep 26, 2019
While your eyelashes are protecting your eyes, your lungs are letting you breathe, and virtually every other part of your body—inside and out—is performing its own relatively well-known task, your belly button is just sitting there collecting lint. And while it’s true that your navel served its most important purpose before you were born, it’s not totally useless now back when you were a fetus, your belly button was more of a belly portal: Your umbilical cord extended from it and connected you to the placenta on your mother’s uterine wall. That way, the placenta could channel nutrients and oxygen to you through the cord, and you could send back waste.

Your umbilical cord was cut when you were born, creating a tiny bulge that left behind some scar tissue after it healed. That scar tissue is your belly button, navel, or umbilicus. Though you may have heard that the shape of your belly button is a direct result of the scissor skills of the doctor who delivered you, that’s not true. Dr. Dan Polk, a neonatologist in the Chicago area, told the Chicago Tribune that a belly button's shape “has to do with how much baby skin leads onto the umbilical cord from the baby’s body. Less skin makes an innie; more skin makes an outie.” About 90 percent of people have innies.

Regardless of how your belly button looks, you probably don’t use it on a daily basis. However, if you’ve studied anatomy, medicine, or a related field, you might recognize it as the central point by which the abdomen is divided into the following quadrants: right upper, left upper, right lower, and left lower. Another way of classifying that area is into nine regions—including the hypochondriac, lumbar, iliac, epigastric, and hypogastric regions—with the umbilical region at the very center.

Your belly button can also serve as the opening for laparoscopic surgery, which can save you from having a scar elsewhere on your abdomen.
The navel is a great central landmark outside of medicine, too. If you’ve taken yoga or Pilates classes, you may have heard it referred to as the center of balance or center of gravity. Because it sits right on top of your abdominal muscles, your belly button is an easy marker for your instructor to mention when they want you to access your core, which helps you balance.
