There was confusion yesterday in Enugu State over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled ward congresses with the party’s two factions making conflicting claims. While the members of the faction loyal to Governor Sullivan Chime led by Chief Ikeji Asogwa as acting Chairman waited in vain for the materials for the congress to arrive from Abuja, the Senator Ike Ekeremadu faction led by Elder David Aja, also as acting chairman said that congress had successfully been conducted in the state. The battle of wits over the congress started at the Abuja Wadata House of the party on Friday night, as some principal officers of the National Assembly allegedly tried to hijack the materials . Sunday Sun reliably gathered that two Senators, a House of Representatives member, and a former Minister of Information from the state had kept vigil at the party’s headquarters in a bid to take possession of the materials. Our source said the group led by one of the Senators had arrived at the national secretariat of the party with hundreds of policemen and thugs. Sunday Sun also gathered that from 3:00p.m to 9:00p.m on Friday night, the politicians who were accompanied by two national officers of the PDP from the South-East allegedly tried to take possession of the materials meant for the election of delegates in the 260 wards in the state. The source said that their presence at the party’s secretariat made the five-man panel who were to bring the materials to Enugu to be scared, as their policemen and thugs were all over the place. Not knowing what next to do, the source said that the panel members took the materials collected from the party secretariat to the Wuse 2 Police Station, Abuja for safe keeping. According to the source, some party chieftains and officials in Enugu had waited at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu yesterday for the arrival of the materials to no avail. When Sunday Sun visited the state PDP secretariat yesterday, party members were seen in large numbers anxiously waiting for the arrival of the materials. By 3:30p.m, news came from Abuja that the congress in the state had been cancelled with no new date fixed for the exercise. However, factional state Chairman of the party, Elder Aja, said they held the ward congresses and they were successful. Aja who addressed reporters yesterday said that field reports he received indicated that the congresses were successfully conducted across the state without any hitch. Said he: “As you are aware, the congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 266 Electoral Wards of Enugu State were held today where three delegates were elected by our members in the various wards. But in a swift reaction, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr Okey Eze said that no ward congress had officially commenced in the state as at 4: 30pm yesterday. “The state party secretariat has been open and ready for the congress since 7:00a.m today. No member of the electoral panel from the national secretariat of the party has reported to our party office at N0. 1 Chime Lane, G.R.A, Enugu, the venue officially designated by the national secretariat of our party for the commencement and coordination of all the congresses and party primaries.” Eze said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=88977 |

Prominent governorship aspirants in Abia State on the platform of the Peoples Democatic Party (PDP), including Senators Uche Chukwumerije (Abia North), Senator Nkechi Nwaogu (Abia Central), and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), have faulted the party ward congress held in the state on Saturday. Addressing a press conference on Sunday, they alleged the ward congress never took place. They contended that instead what took place was that the Tony Ceaser Okeke national congress team at 1.20 p.m. arrived the State Secretariat of the state PDP and had a meeting with aspirants, delegates, and stakeholders who expressed their fears over the plan to hijack the congresses by the State Government, and that the meeting ended at 2.15 p.m. They also alleged that the party membership registers of all the 184 wards in Abia disappeared contrary to the guidelines for conduct of congresses. The aspirants also pointed out that the Ceaser Okeke teams failed to produce the mandatory election materials for the congresses including collation materials, identity tags for those to supervise the elections, and party registers. Nobody, they claimed, was deployed in the field to conduct the congress. The protesting governorship aspirants also included Chief Eric Acho Nwakanma, Chief Uzoma Abonta, Solomon Ogunji, Reverend G. Nwambu, Emeka Atuma, and Nze Esiaga. They stated further: “In the field where people waited, nobody came with any materials; the only activity was the Transition Committee Chairmen in every local government moving about with their security and video crew and still photographers taking pictures of the crowds anxiously waiting for the arrival of the electoral officers. “Between 5.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. the people dispersed to their homes disappointed. From about 8 p.m. we noticed surreptitious movements of non-executive members of the party and government officials carrying pre-prepared fictitious result sheets of papers to the members of the Tony Ceaser Okeke-led panel in Damgrete Hotel where they were huddled since their arrival after the meeting with stakeholders and aspirants which as earlier noted ended at 2.15 p.m. “Rumour has it that the panel spent most of the night compiling the fictitious results into their result sheets. “Therefore, based on the foregoing, we emphatically stress that no congress election of any type took place in the whole of Abia. “We insist on an election as scheduled by the constitution of the party be held as soon as possible within the time line of the 2015 electoral schedule of our great party. “The charade that took place in Abia had absolutely no remedial features. It is a shameless caricature of democracy, a cruel stab on PDP’s legacy of internal democracy and a crude mockery of our great party’s assurance of a level playing ground. “Finally, the gross aberration of yesterday is unprecedented in executive impunity and the ultimate in anti-democracy conspiracy and fascist fraud.” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/11/chukwumerije-nwogu-abaribe-others-reject-abia-pdp-congress/ |
Sixteen Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Rivers State have described the meddlesomeness of the wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, in the affairs of the party in the state as unacceptable. The aspirants have also threatened dire consequences that could affect the fortunes of the PDP in Rivers State if their call for the cancelation of yesterday’s ward congresses and other grievances are addressed by the party. The aggrieved aspirants are: Benibo Dagogo-Jack, Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Major Lancellot Anyanya, Sampson Ngerebara, Nimi Walson-Jack, Senator Lee Maeba, Gabriel Pidomson, Dr. Silva Opusunju. Others are Bernard Mikko, Pawariso Samuel Horsfall, Oseleye Dennis Ojuka, Tonye Princewill, Captain Nwankwo Sunday, Professor Don Baridam, Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja and Abie Bob Abbey-Hart. Arising from an emergency meeting, which held at the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, yesterday, the aspirants stated that they had been deceived into believing that there would be a level playing field for all the aspirants, but the recent happenings in the party, particularly the actions of Mrs. Jonathan and the national Chairman of the party, suggested otherwise. “We want to put it on record that the First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has publicly (not in her house, but in the house of one of the aspirants) endorsed an aspirant. The First Lady has also approached some of the aspirants to step down and even invited them to a dinner/meeting in the Presidential Villa. We have constrained ourselves from addressing the unacceptable and unfortunate interference of the First Lady in the affairs of the Rivers State PDP because of the enormous respect we have for our son, President Jonathan, but we want to say that enough is enough,” they said. The aspirants also expressed regret that even the national chairman of the PDP, Adamu Muazu, came to Port Harcourt and said publicly that former Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, whom the wife of the president had publicly endorsed, is on course with his governorship ambition. •Text courtesy of The Guardian On Sunday.
