“There is no doubt that Nigeria is winning the war on corruption. It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered,”

The Presidency on Sunday said contrary to what many might believe, Nigeria is winning the war on corruption under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch. It said although it might not be immediately clear to many, the fight against corruption has been taken several notches higher since Jonathan came on board. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja. “There is no doubt that Nigeria is winning the war on corruption. It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered,” Okupe said. He said the nation’s movement from its 144th position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index last year to 136th position this year was an indication that a lot had been achieved by this administration in the anti-corruption fight. He recalled that when the oganisation gave its verdict last year and Nigerians held the view that the Federal Government was not doing enough to fight corruption, the administration had assured that the Jonathan administration remained focus in its determination to completely eradicate corruption in public service. He said the latest TI rating was a proof that Jonathan’s effort in the fight against corruption is yielding positive results. He said, “There is no doubt that since President Jonathan came on board as president of this country, the fight against corruption has been taken several notches higher. “Unlike any previous administration in the country‘s history, the present administration has instituted institutional reforms aimed at giving fillip to the anti-corruption war. “One major area this fight has been visible is the agricultural sector where the administration’s carefully articulated and executed Agricultural Transformation Agenda ended forty years of corruption in the distribution of fertilizers to farmers. “The same thing applies to the reforms in Ports where we have successfully plugged many loopholes which some corrupt officials had exploited to delay genuine business transactions and harm the Nigerian economy. “The Old corrupt system of Government Direct Procurement and Distribution of Fertiliser as well as the operations in the various Ports and government agencies contributed in no small measure to the negative rating of Nigeria by the Transparency International and other global watchdogs. “Also, the determination of President Jonathan to tackle corruption head on has seen the government take some other far reaching steps like the cleaning up of the import waiver system, which before his coming was fraught with corruption, nepotism, arbitrariness and other irregularities. “As a result of this, billions of Naira were lost to the economy as the real business people failed to benefit. “While it was important for suspects involved in corruption cases to be tried and if found guilty sent to jail, what is more important is for the development of mechanisms, the institution of structures and the enactment of policies that would plug loopholes and foster transparency such that the propensity for corruption is made more difficult and eliminated completely.” This, he said, was what the Jonathan administration had been doing and that was the template adopted by countries like Denmark and New Zealand, which are at the top of the TI index. Like New Zealand, Okupe said the Jonathan administration was deploying Information and Communications Technology to tackle corruption head on. Nineteen aggrieved governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State have said that President Goodluck Jonathan will lose the election in the state if the party fields Mr. Nyesom Wike as its governorship candidate. The aspirants, who gathered under the auspices of Rivers Mainstream Coalition, said this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday. Leader and spokesperson for the aspirants, Prof. Israel Owate, said it was unfortunate that the national leadership of the party had remained silent over series of protest lodged with it on the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party. He said the aspirants had exhausted all avenues within different organs of the party like its National Working Committee, Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee in their honest quest for solutions to the lingering crisis within the PDP in Rivers State. Owate also said that he and other aspirants were not happy that the leadership of the party, led by its Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu refused to listen to the advice given by leaders of the party from South-South, led by Chief Edwin Clark, that the governorship position be zoned to either the Riverine or the Ogoni in the state. He called on the party and the President to either listen to the cry of the aspirants or the “PDP risks losing the two million voters from Rivers State.” He said it would be wrong for the Governor of the State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi who is an Ikwere to also handover to another person from his tribe when leaving office in 2015. Owate said that there were specific cases of impunity being perpetrated on the state to achieve the total exslusion of the PDP leaders and their followers who he said, insisted on zoning and respecting the established rotations formular in the state. He said, “The naked hijack of the ward delegates election which had a four-man electoral committee that was nominated by the stinking cartel and the very shoddy screening of State House and National Assembly aspirants which left more persons screened out than made the list with no official explanation till date.” He listed other actions he considered as acts of impunity being perpetrated by the party in the state to include what he described as the dramatic and shocking screening out of several qualified governorship aspirants and the “charade called the House of Assembky primaries which were all thuggery-enforced kangaroo primaries conducted without official delegates’ list and which returned most of the ‘favoured aspirants’ unopposed. “All these acts of desperation are part of the grand conspiracy to give Wike the exclusive right to the party’s governorship ticket for the 2015 elections in total disregard of the party’s constitution on zoning and rotation of political offices.” He said that if the situation was not attended to, the people of the state including the aggrieved members of the party at various levels, were capable of deciding their own fate. But, he warned that such decision would not only affect the outcome of the governorship election, he added that it was also capable of having a negative effect on the presidential election. According to him, “We are worried that our party, the PDP is about to sacrifice the interest of over five million Rivers people and put at grave risk the attainment of the usual two million votes in the presidential election because of the inordinate governorship ambition of one man. “We shall as patriotic Rivers people do what is right for our state and we urge the PDP to do same. “A couple of persons are bent on twisting and distorting our political tradition, we want to sound it loud and clear that Rivers people have very wide options and the nature and scope of their response cannot be determined by the Rivers Mainstream coalition of by the PDP.” He said the aspirants would want the president to call on the NWC of the PDP to cancel what he described as the flawed Rivers State Ward Delegates Election. Apart from this, he said the party must open,y declare that the zone which produced Amaechi must be excluded from fielding candidates as had been done in Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Adamawa and Enugu States. He also called for the sacking of the Deputy National Chairman of the party who is from the state, Mr. Uche Secondus, who he said had shown enough bias towards the governorship aspiration of Wike. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-will-lose-rivers-votes-aggrieved-pdp-gov-aspirants/ |

APC primaries hold amid tight security DECEMBER 4, 2014 BY ENIOLA AKINKUOTU Leave a Comment The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has commenced its governorship primaries at the Onikan Stadium, Ikoyi. Over 3,000 delegates from the 20 local government areas of the state have been accredited and ballot boxes placed at the centre of the field. All 13 governorship aspirants are seated outside the main field. They are: A former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan; a former Account General of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode; the Current Commissioner for Works, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji and Senator Ganiyu Solomon. Others are Mr. Wahab Tokunbo, a former aide to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Tayo Akinde; Mr. Olanrewaju Ope, a former Commissioner for Rural Affairs, Mr. Toyin Ayinde and a former Attorney General of the state, Mr. Olasupo Shasore. Ambode, who is said to have the backing of Tinubu is the most likely candidate to win. Our correspondent who spoke to a cross section of aspirants across all the local governments learnt that Ambode would emerge the winner. Despite protests by all the aspirants (except Ambode) that the direct system of election should be used, the APC has gone ahead to employ the delegate system otherwise known as the indirect system of voting. The Peoples Democratic Party has therefore told the APC aspirants that they are free to join the PDP if they perceive any hanky panky. However, the state Chairman of Lagos APC, Chief Henry Ajomale, said, while addressing journalists at the venue, that there would be a level playing field. Ajomale said the direct system of primaries would be too hectic and cumbersome. He, however, said aspirants would not defect to the PDP if things did not go their way. He said, “We had about 20 aspirants in 2007 and many even left because they were not satisfied but we still won convincingly. “Everybody cannot win but I am proud of the quality of the aspirants we have today.” The chairman of the event, Mr. Peter Obada, who is also a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, said the votes would be counted at the venue.
