I said Nigeria has been finalists twice in 1989 and 2005 not winners.
What is the correlation between a winner of a competition and who got to finals. He referenced who has won a competition and you are talking about who got to finals twice.
History don't remember who got to finals it's who wins that history remembers, if I ask you who was the finalist in 2018 world cup you may not remember but but you will always know the winner hence theres no basis to respond with finalist.
I get you were trying to portray that Nigeria has done well in such competition too but it has no correlation with the subject of discourse.

Omor, the Moroccan football teams have really come to global limelight.

- The men's senior soccer team got to the semifinal of the World Cup in 2022.

- The men's U-23 soccer team also got to the semifinal of the Olympics

- Their women's senior soccer team got to the finals of AFCON 2024.

- And now, their U-20 team has won the U-20 World Cup for the first time.

NOTE ALSO: They are the only team that won all 10 matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Morocco is getting it right in all facets of football and I'm really envious of them. They have gradually developed their football through a system that works and perhaps FIFA football development academy set up there also helped it grow.
If there's any African country that can win the world cup sonner than later then that would be Morocco who have surpassed teams like Cameroon, Egypt and Nigeria before they even start going to the world cup.
It's also surprising that their women football has grown tremendously by getting to the wafcon final for an Arab nation who don't really value women .
Congratulations to Morocco and perhaps other African nations should go and understudy Morocco football and how they got it right.
SportsRe: Nigeria's Narrow Escape Loss To Benin — Are We Really Going To The World Cup? by coleon(m): 3:35pm On Oct 16, 2025
emiye:
Nigeria is more consistent and usually have a formidable performance compared to other African countries, you can argue it, but it is true. The closest to Nigeria at the world cup with a relative consistent performance is Senegal. Morroco may do same at this next world cup.

Nigeria has progressed pass the first round 50% of the time it has featured , which is a good result, take note that usually half of the teams go home in the first round, for African sides the statistics is worse, more like 80%. On situations we didn't go pass first round, 2 of it has been a narrow miss. In 2018 world cup, we were looking good for 2nd round, until the last 8 minutes goal by Argentina, and a VAR penalty that should have been awarded but dismissed. In 2014, we stood on business against France in second round until they took out our main midfield maestro Onazie and loss to France. In 2010 world cup, a close one as well , a red card in 2nd game by Kaita cost us the game, and a 2-2 draw when we needed a win made us to drop out.
If you are observant, Nigeria has not been to any world cup losing all 3 games. We have played Argentina, an obviously better side about 4 times and only lost by a goal margin.

Even CAF will prefer Nigeria representing Africa in global tourney than a Togo or S/Africa or cape verde. There is a reason why Nigeria also has more Africa nations cup medal than any other African country; CONSISTENCY. Go figure.

All the times we have not been to the world cup in the last 44 years, we lost on either Head to Head or Away goal.
I suppose you are contradicting yourself in some of the comments you made here. How can you even be suggesting that Nigeria has had better outing in the world cup than Cameroon who has not only been in the world cup than Nigeria but has also been to the quarter final as far back as 1990 when Nigeria was yet to qualify for one. Also, you attested to losing to Argentina by a goal margin but forgetting that you have met Argentina 5 times and lost 5 times which indicates total dominance on a team just filling up the numbers and not competing, there's always a story or excuse to be given by every team beaten in a competition so forget about that penalty not given etc yarns. As far as I'm concerned Nigeria even if they get to the world cup is only just completing the numbers and not really competing Alfie anything as usual.
The only African team I see competing is Morocco so all that noise about Nigeria showing up in world stage is only imaginary and not based on facts on ground.

If you have followed the Nigerian National team well enough you should know that we may struggle with minnows in Africa but we are no pushovers at the Global stage. This team might be struggling with less fancied African teams but they will be hard to beat at the World Cup. I am sure you must be one of those that doubted we could beat Benin by 4:0. WE ARE NIGERIA, WE RISE TO THE OCCASION.
Whenever I read statements like Nigeria always shine at the global stage I always laugh out loud.
Statistics on ground does not support this notion in any way, Nigeria has never gone beyond 2nd round in the world cup before meanwhile African countries like Cameroon, Senegal and Morocco have been to the quarter final and semi final respectively. So how can a country that has never gone past the second round and have lost to Argentina in every world cup it has ever played be boasting of rising to the occasion at the global stage?

This is why I don't value a lot of nonsense that comes out of this forum.A lot of dumb ignorant people masquerade themselves as learned and being informed. Someone just corrected you that Dangote is not running monopoly in any of his business areas yet you are still boastful in your ignorance and telling someone that knows more than you to go and read.
Read what exactly? Do you know the meaning of monopoly at all? Who is your economics teacher if you don't know the difference between monopoly and oligopoly? Most of Dangote businesses that you ignorant people call monopoly are actually oligopoly. He's not the only one in any of his businesses but they are few of them in those businesses like cement, sugar, steel and not oil and gas and it's understandable because of the capital required to float such businesses.

Nobody traveled abroad more than Obasanjo. Though most of his trips were non-medical or personal. But he made the word globetrottering popular. I believe he visited about 103 countries during his tenure.

Obasanjo is actually part of the problem. During his tenure all these mess you are witnessing today was brought back into our politics. You think Edris sang Jaga Jaga for fun? Or Blackfaze's Hard life was just for entertainment? Political opponents were killed, Bola Ige, Funsho Williams, Akande etc. He pursued Fayose from Ekiti via state of emergency and then impeachment. Seized Lagos State's Federal allocation, looked the other way when Ngige a sitting governor was kidnapped. Used El-Rufai as FCT minister to demolish houses, Ribadu at EFFC to harass political opponents. Saw to the impeachment of 3 senate presidents. Used INEC to rig elections, AD was strong in the West, APGA (a new party) in the East, ANPP in the North, but in 2003 elections the way PDP won was like magic, all the western states apart from Lagos went to PDP, same in the East. Ballot box snatching and stuffing was on another level. Let me stop here.
You were making sense until you included Funsho Williams. The one that killed Funsho Williams is in Aso Rock today and funshos death has nothing to do with Obasanjo. Was Funsho Williams not in the same PDP with obj so what motive does obj have to kill him?

Simple. That is what it should be. That is the way democracy works everywhere it impacts positively on countries and nations. A government stands or falls on performance, period, no sentiments.

There is no other incentive for politicians to work for the good of the people if they cannot be removed by the people. No company or entrepreneur will employ staff it cannot sack if discipline or performance comes to question.

That is why the peak of democracy came in 2015 when a non performing and corrupt government was removed at the polls but since then performace has not been the criteria two elections after. This is the result in Nigeria today, all development indices today are below 2015 levels.

So it is up to Nigerians to decide if the present government has performed and deserves another term. They should decide if the government is listening to them, doing their bidding and improving their lives, whether it's austerity measures are equitable and sustainable, whether their lives and properties are safe going forward.

People should vote based on their experiences under this government, period.
When a school or job or professional examination is conducted the establishment is not interested in what you knew yesterday or what you may know tomorrow with more effort. You will get that position, promotion or certificate based on what you know and can do now.

Elections are the examinations of political office holders. You, Mr. Citizen are one of many examiners.
I wish I can like your comment 10 times more because this is the expectation in any sane society or organisation and it shows that you understand corporate governance.
But unfortunately this country is the worst kind of country anyone can be not just because the leaders are bad but because the followers too are shallow minded. When it gets to election time instead of asking the fundamental question that should form the basis for voting which is " Was my life better off before Tinubu and now" so many unnecessary sentiments will take over that simple logical question.
Sentiments like, Omo wa ni eje o shey, it's a Muslim Muslim ticket, Tinubu has a private jet, Peter Obi is an Omo Ibo, Atiku is too corrupt, They should settle me to vote.
This country is beyond redemption so lets just give up.

You've just done what I call wuruwuru to the answer grin. Using the minimum wage in Nigeria and then turning around using one of the highest pay in forign country. If you're earning minimum wage in 9ja, you have no business buying a crate of eggs, even while growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, we only ate eggs on special days not all the time. Just like someone earning $8 or $15 an hour has no business buying organic eggs for $16.99, there are options as low as $6, trust me if you are comparing egg cost, make sure to compare housing and healthcare cost too, na then you go know say una dey enjoy for 9ja grin grin

Nigeria is not working because the people just like the government are clueless!
Though I understand where you are coming from and I know that poverty dealt a higher and serious blow to you while growing which is evident in this abnormal analysis you made . To think that you are postulating that eggs which is a common stable food and should form a nutritional diet of every child should only be reserved for special days is not only shallow but a miguided statement in all ramifications. Infact, the WHO recommended one egg per day for every child but in your attempt to support what is not supportable and to show that you probably grew up in a refugee camp you have decided to say eggs should only be eaten on special days like you did and even attach some luxury living to eating eggs!!!
If minimum wage cannot make someone to afford eggs then what else would be affordable to the person , is it rice which is a no go area because a bag is 80k, beans no go area too or potatoes.
You people should not bring your refugee camp mindset to this forum and allow people to live their lives in peace instead of gaslighting them unnecessarily in a bid to make Nigeria and government look ok. I don't blame you but the fellow that brought this stupid comparison to this forum in the first place.

I think you should double check your comments because it's illogical. Peter Obi is not hoping for anything bad to happen to Nigeria if at all you read the message before commenting, he's merely drawing your attention to the fact that something bad has already happened to Nigeria which is championed by Tinubu and APC based on the fact on ground. You can either play the ostrich and dismiss it because of your political affiliation but it doesn't change the fact, Peter Obi did not prepare the report of the declining FDI it was prepared by the NBS which is an arm of the government so I don't get your point at all.

Imassive drop in FDI inflow in any economy is actually a strong indicator of a bad economy. You cannot on one hand be praising the government for reforms that have not yielded any tangible result and on the other hand be waving off the impact of absence of FDI in the country.
Infact, it goes hand in hand because where investors feel safe and comfortable to get reward for their investments they put their money so this is a strong indicator that Tinubus reform is only on paper and nothing tangible is on ground working.

I have always thought you are not so lettered and perhaps under 20 with most of your comments that I see here and this comment has further confirmed that bias. There's no country in the world where GDP and per capital income is measured in the local currency, infact the very essence of gdp is to measure comparative productivity between countries so you cannot do that with local currency unless with the international currency which is USD since local currencies are subjective .
The other day when Peter Obi came out to say Nigeria loan is over NGN170Trn, your lots alongside Reno Omokri went to town to scream that the loans should be calculated in USD since the currency is floated to show the government is working even though over 60% of the loans are domestic debts and bonds which are not sourced for in foreign currencies. Now that USD is not in your favour you want us to calculate GDP in Naira to further delude unlettered people like yourself.
APC supporters always amaze me sha, cherry picking just to prove a stupid point that is so glaring that even a blind man can see in this economy.

Nigeria has never had good leaders at all, even now

For us to have good leaders, we must have a leader who will do what okchina, Japan and Germany among many nations did.

If you think I support tinubu then that means that tinubu is following china and Germany example. As you can see he is not

Good evening. Not everyone who thinks different from you supports apc. I support Nigeria. Not apc or pdp
Nobody is insinuating that you are an APC supporter, I am only saying you should stop downplaying their success compared to the present disaster to high prices . Infact I just checked and crude oil prices presently at USD85 is higher than OBJs time. OBJs attraction of FDI in his time is due to his government policies and not due to oil prices. OBJs tenure was the last time an American president visited Nigeria, what does that tell you about his foreign policies and how that would translate to FDI influx? OBJs tenure was the time Nigeria banks consolidated and capital based increased to 25Bn, why would that not attract investors? OBJs tenure was the time the pension industry was floated in Nigeria with the enactment of pension law and Pencom, OBJs tenure was the start of the GSM and telecoms revolution in Nigeria . Why will all these activities not attract massive influx of FDI's and the statistics do not lie as you can see.
Pls stop downplaying babas visionary government and yarning dusts that it's caused by oil prices pls.

I am not here to defend APC...

Yes, very true, but the thing is, oil prices were going up, and then we got our loans forgiven in 2005. See the graph from 2006-when he left office. Naturally, confidence.

Same thing with Yaradua and GEJ...FDI was high because high oil revenues.

Same thing happened in 1973-82, when oil prices were high, and when we had car and truck assembly plants all over the country, and Lagos had a booming industrial sector...along with Ogun, and other parts of the country. Money attracts money.

If Obasanjo had stayed, by now we would be blaming him for squandering the oil money boom.

The best way to keep FDI High enough....you remove subsides, you reform the tax sector, you also fight corruption and invest heavily in education, especially technical education, and you invest in infrastructure like roads and railways. We have always failed in fighting corruption and education, and security.
If not for maturity I would have insulted you for this response before but I am a better man now. Ideally, I have stopped responding to fake narratives on this platform but distortion of facts such as this if left unchallenged would be taken by ignorant folks and turned to truths in beer parlours or public discourse.
Firstly, there's no correlation between oil prices and FDI in any economy, while oil prices impacts government revenue to fund budget, FDI impacts inflows that mainly translates to exchange rate stability. The main reason naira was stable and not devalued daily in objs regime was due to the high rate of fdis experienced in his time . All the policy direction of obj like sale of NNPC,sale of nitel,NEPA ,debt forgiveness, floating of NLNG and better security network is what aided the massive influx of FDI's in his time and not your warped half-baked analysis of oil prices. If it's oil prices then why did Jonathan not attract better FDI than obj since oil price was much higher in his time than OBJs own?
What the guy said is the truth that obj is by far the best president Nigeria has ever had and should have been allowed to continue. Was there book haram or bandits in OBJs time? Would any investor want to invest in a boko haram haven?
Sometimes when you peddle your fact misrepresentation you should limit it to illiterates and ignorant fellows and not come online to just spit jargons to those that actually experienced it.

The rubbish NNPC refineries that Tinubu wasted our our Usd1.5Bn on have all stopped functioning today.
