selemempe: help me tell commentor...he has just been commenting rubbish here since I saw 1983, even as a child. There are more people in middle class today than back then. Ajegunle was a complete pig sty and telephones were for the rich. There was no Magodo, Egbeda, Lekki or Ajah. So what exactly is your point? |

tommy589: New York times '83 report was different from how government impacted on lives of average Nigerians then. As bad as it was, Nigerians bought mainly mint cars and can get on hire purchase, no state government was owning salaries, luncheon vouchers and travellers cheques were recognised form of payment,an average Nigerian can afford basic food needs like milk, geisha, sardine etc without breaking sweat, public schools with expatriate teachers etc You mean the elites in the cities. How many mint cars were bought in Nkpor or Ekpoma? |

selemempe: if buhari didn't truncate the gains of 1970s by instituting tyranny, we would not have had Abacha, ibb and the unfortunate events of June 12 which saw Nigeria sanctioned by Europe and America and chaos unleashed everywhere. We would have had 41 years of democracy which could potentially mean that by now all major zones of Nigeria would have produced president and agitations would have reduced. there would have been Balance of strength between the north and south. We would have had 19 strong states.
Was it not eventually a democratic government led by Obasanjo and ngozi okonjo that saw those 1980s debts cleared.
Tell us what exactly buhari achieved by overthrowing shagari. Nigeria paid up because, a new vista on global economics was taking place - globalisation. Tell us what Eduardo dos Santos, a democratically elected president has done for Angola. |

selemempe: shagari was a democratically elected government....if he failed... you remove him through the ballot...
How do you remove a failed military government....yea...the type that Abacha, ibb and buhari turned out to be?
He was a legitimate institution that shouldn't have been tampered with... how do you not know this? The premise here is that they Nigeria would have been better for it, and that I strongly disagree with. All the negatives of today's democracy were evident at the time and so I ask what is your grouse? |

selemempe: you still don't get the point...I wrote in my first post that the momentum of the 70s were not maintained by buhari, ibb and Abacha....I don't care who started the momentum...but I am sure that had it been maintained by these three in the 80s and 90s or had they left shagari alone, we won't be this bad now Before you proceed tell us what Shagari's legacy was. |
Celebrities › Re: 'We Don’t Know Him' - Americans React After Davido Got Recognized During An NBA by Commentor: 1:06pm On Feb 24, 2020 |
selemempe: but it was in those 70s that the following was done
1. Establishment of NNPC with 4 refineries 2. Building of high ways 3. Establishment of many federal universities 4 Nitel, NEPA, 5. Abuja 6. 19 viable states 7. Enthronement of merit in public service 8. Unity schools 9. Nysc A whole lot of other progressive establishments.
What do we have now? 36 states that can't pay salaries or minimum wage Who is talking about the 70's? We are talking about Nigeria's situation just before military intervention. In any case, those positives you posted above were from the same military headed by the same people you castigated earlier - Obasanjo and Buhari. |

selemempe: lol... developed countries are too busy doing them to care a shít about what you are doing in your own country
Most Americans have never left America because really what is out there that ain't in America?
Nigeria could have been like that too if the momentum of the 70s were maintained by buhari, Abacha and ibb...the three menaces that killed Nigeria
Sad is that one of them is still calling the shot today because some people felt 'marginalised' by PDP
Most people from Botswana, Namibia and SA have also not bothered about any other countries...they are busy developing their space.
We can't even get basic legislations like state police passed because some people are afraid they can no longer do any how in the south...sad What momentum are you talking about? In 1983, when the military took over Nigeria was at its worst ever. From the New York Times of May, 1983: The most recent figures for Nigeria's cash reserves, for January of this year, were $1.3 billion - enough to finance only about a month of imports - and some analysts believe that reserves have dwindled to virtually nothing in the few months since then. ChevKing: Is London the only major city in UK? Are you aware they are also getting London licence?
Commenting to show you can talk without knowledge is folly. Just as London is not the only city in Uk, Lagos also is not the only city in Nigeria. I can also tell you several other cities they don't operate in viz Plymouth, Bournemouth, Brighton, Croydon, all in the Southeast except for Plymouth in the Southwest. So why must Lagos adopt what several cities in the UK you've used as an example refuse them? |

Not only that, it is an indictment of the citizens.
Bribery is rife and condoned,
Violent crimes are commonplace, counterfeiting of medicines is a 'business's for some and low levels of servicing of transport is witnessed.

The solution, in my opinion, is for us to ensure that the teeming unemployed youths that we have in this country are employed – a sizeable number of them are given employments. the government must live up to expectation. For example, the local government system is dead. If we revive the local government system, that a local government chairman can award contracts, build structures, build roads linking communities, build bridges, provide for the markets and can employ, I can tell you that it will reduce insurgency. This is because the market for insurgents is so huge in Nigeria
Donald Duke was amongst the first leaders to stifle the local governments in his state. |
