Prodeum, a Lithuanian cryptocurrency startup, has disappeared without a trace, supposedly running away with millions of dollars in investor money. To add insult to injury, the scammers posted a cryptic message on their website with the word: penis. It makes some sense as there’s a medication called Prodium that is used to treat urinary tract infections. Before it ran away with the money, Prodeum fooled investors into believing that it’s keeping track of fruits and vegetables on the Etherium blockchain. The startup asked investors for help in raising 5,400 ether or about $6.5 million. Prodeum reportedly raised millions of dollars in venture capital money, although many are skeptical, pointing out that the company’s amateurish press release and ICO make it highly unlikely to dupe many investors. Seriously, who is going to believe in a cryptocurrency based on vegetables? Apparently, a few gullible investors took the bait. On January 28, the cryptocurrency startup vanished, but not before leaving the hilarious message on its website. As of this writing, all traces of the company have disappeared, including its Twitter and Telegram accounts. Emails to the company’s customer service address bounced back. Upon further investigation, it appears that the founders used fake LinkedIn profiles with fake photos. Prodeum is just one in the long and growing line of cryptocurrency scams. On April of last year, an Indian blockchain startup named OneCoin duped investors of $350 million. Another startup named Confido ran away with a paltry $370,000. Obviously, not every ICO is a scam, and there are dozens of legitimate cryptocurrency firms. The unregulated nature of cryptocurrencies and the allure of easy money, however, make the industry susceptible to scammers and fraudsters of all kinds. Fraudulent individuals can easily register a company, make a professional website and release an official-looking paper. Scammers can also hire people to write fake news stories about their startup to drum up interest. Cryptocurrency investors are advised to practice due diligence before investing their hard-earned money. https://naijagossipa.com/2018/02/18/cryptocurrency-scammers-run-away-with-millions-leave-funny-website-message/

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has reacted to the incident that occurred yesterday, in which Air Peace Flight was prevented from landing at the Akure Airport in Ondo state after cows strayed onto the runway. “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to apologize to Air Peace Airlines and our esteemed passengers for a runway incursion incident that prevented an Akure airport bound flight from landing for some minutes. The Air Peace flight, which left Lagos for Akure could not land immediately as some cows had strayed into the runway of the airport. However, normalcy was restored quickly, as officers of the aviation security department quickly dispersed the cows from the runway and the aircraft was cleared for landing. The Authority will like to assure travellers and the general public that efforts are already ongoing to close the gap that aided this incident. FAAN….. Committed to our core values of safety, security and comfort.” https://naijagossipa.com/2018/02/18/cow-prevented-air-peace-flight-from-landing-in-akure-airport-faan-react/ |

BARCELONA star Lionel Messi has reportedly learned a cluster of clubs are not interested in signing Andre Gomes. Gomes has made 69 appearances and helped Barcelona win two trophies since moving to the Nou Camp from Valencia in 2016. And he looks set to collect the second league title-winners’ medal of his career with Ernesto Valverde’s side flying high at the top of La Liga. Gomes has often come under criticism during his time at Barcelona though, with claims he does not suit the club’s style of play. And his performances have apparently been the subject of scrutiny from team-mates, including Messi and Luis Suarez, as well. Gomes has been tipped to leave Barcelona at the end of the season after failing to replicate the form he showed at Valencia. But the latest reports from Spain suggest he could struggle to find a new club when the transfer window opens. According to Don Balo, Messi has discovered five teams are unwilling to discuss a deal for Gomes. Juventus, linked with the Portuguese in the past, are said to have withdrawn their interest in him. Messi has supposedly learned Serie A rivals AC Milan and Roma are not keen on Gomes either. Tottenham are not thought to be prepared to offer Gomes a route away from Barcelona. Valencia, meanwhile, are allegedly not interested in re-signing the 24-year-old midfielder. www.naijagossipa.com

Adebayo Ilesanmi, a retired soldier who was beaten into a coma by some suspected thugs in Akure, the Ondo state capital is dead. Pa Ilesanmi died after an unsuccessful surgical operation at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile Ife in Osun State. The retired soldier had been at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and had under-went series of surgical operations following a brutal attack. Gbenga Ilesanmi, one of the sons of the retired soldier disclosed this to newsmen in a telephone conversation. Ilesanmi said that the doctors administering treatments on the 72-year-old retired old soldier announced his death to the families of the deceased. “Baba (Pa Adebayo Ilesanmi) is dead, he died after series of surgical operation on his brain at the OAUTH, Ile Ife in Osun." “He had been hospitalized since he was beaten into coma by those thugs (Ade Basket’s boys) who invaded one of his properties in Akure." “The doctors carried out some surgical operations on his brain and also placed him at the intensive care unit of OAUTH." “At the hospital, he was using an oxygen to breathe through his lungs but the doctors confirmed his death to us (families) today,” he said on phone. It had formerly been reported how some thugs’ beats up Pa Adebayo into coma at one of his landed property at the Oshinle Quarters in Akure. Newsmen gathered that these hoodlums are errand boys to the notorious Akure thug, Mr. Ade Fayehun otherwise known as “Ade Basket”. The police in Ondo State had arrested two men – Mr. Ologunmeta Akinwumi and Folusho Falodun in connection to the attack on the retired soldier. Both men were arraigned at a Magistrate Court where they were slammed with a two counts charge of conspiracy and attempted murder. President Trump proposed a budget Monday that hits the poorest Americans the hardest, slashing billions of dollars in food stamps, health insurance and federal housing subsidies while pushing legislation to institute broad work requirements for families receiving housing vouchers, expanding on moves by some states to require recipients of Medicaid and food stamps to work. The Trump budget proposal would gut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps, by $17.2 billion in 2019 — equivalent to 22 percent of the program’s total cost last year. It calls for cuts of more than $213.5 billion over the next decade, a reduction of nearly 30 percent, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. In addition, Trump is proposing a full-scale redesign of SNAP, which provides an average of $125 per month to 42.2 million Americans. For the last 40 years, the program has allowed beneficiaries to use SNAP benefits at grocery stores as if they were cash. Under the budget proposal, the Department of Agriculture would use a portion of those benefits to buy and deliver a package of U.S.-grown commodities to SNAP households that receive $90 or more in assistance each month, using the government’s buying power to obtain common foods at lower costs. “This budget proposes taking away food assistance from millions of low-income Americans — and on the heels of a tax cut that favored the wealthy and corporations,” said Stacy Dean, president for food assistance policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “It doesn’t reflect the right values.” The proposal repeats several cost-cutting measures from last year, including new restrictions on eligibility and stricter requirements around the use of work-requirement waivers, which allow states with high unemployment rates to extend benefits to adults who are out of work for longer than three months. Congress has final say over spending — but Monday's budget proposal is seen as an important sign of Trump's priorities. The budget proposal would also alter programs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development “to encourage work and self-sufficiency,” the document said. Trump's proposed budget for the 2019 fiscal year includes a 14 percent cut to HUD, amounting to $6.8 billion below the agency’s current $48 billion spending, an even deeper cut than his previous year's proposal, which had been the most dramatic cut to HUD since President Ronald Reagan slashed the agency’s funding in the early 1980s. The administration has proposed eliminating the entire fund for public housing capital repairs, a savings of nearly $2 billion a year. The targeted cut comes at a time when public housing faces a backlog of capital needs upward of $40 billion, said Diane Yentel, president and chief executive of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. In New York City, about 80 percent of public housing tenants suffered heating and hot water outages in recent months because the aging boiler systems are in desperate need of repair, Yentel said. “The administration wants state and local governments to take care of that, which is just a total abdication of its responsibility,” she said. Trump also proposed cutting a federal housing subsidy program, known as Section 8 vouchers, by nearly $1 billion, which Yentel said would result in more than 250,000 low-income families losing their housing assistance. The cuts would come on top of the administration's proposal to raise the rent for low-income families receiving public housing help. The proposed HUD budget, like last year, would eliminate funding for community development block grants, which play a key role in disaster recovery, as well as grants to states and local governments to increase homeownership for the lowest-income Americans, and funding for neighborhood redevelopment. The Trump administration said it has proposed shutting down programs that are “duplicative or have failed to demonstrate effectiveness” and that state and local governments are better equipped to shoulder the responsibility for community and economic development. On health care for low-income Americans, Trump’s budget calls for cutting federal Medicaid funding by $250 billion over the next 10 years, as the administration envisions passing a law “modeled closely” on a Senate Republican proposal that failed last fall to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The White House plan, similar to that spearheaded by Sens. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.), would dramatically cut federal health spending and send some of the savings to the states. Republicans say doing so would give governors the flexibility to bring down costs, but experts say the overall reduction in government spending would cost millions of Americans their health insurance. The White House plan also calls for new per-person limits on the amount of health care each Medicaid enrollee can use, as well as tying federal spending on the program to the cost of inflation. The budget envisions a sweeping change to Medicaid, turning a portion of the federal funding of the vast safety-net insurance program into a block grant. That grant, starting with $146 billion in 2010 and reaching $1.6 trillion over the coming decade, would free states from basic federal Medicaid rules that spell out which medical benefits the program must cover and which residents must be allowed to qualify. All of the deep cuts to the social safety net that Trump proposed last year were rejected by Congress on a bipartisan basis, and the budget bill passed by Congress last week increased spending amounts in discretionary programs. But Yentel said she fears the drastic cuts in Trump's budget proposal lower the bar for what's considered acceptable. “The president’s budget request is always considered dead on arrival in Congress, especially in an election year,” Yentel said. “My concern is that it leaves open a space for a compromise to be less severe but still a significant cut to programs.” www.concordvibes..com Cc: Lalasticlala Mynd44 |
Early Monday morning, President Trump sent a tweet celebrating the start of his White House campaign for an infrastructure bill. In it, he claimed the United States has spent "$7 trillion in the Middle East.” The president has made this claim (or one relating to it) several times — in interviews and in speeches. According to fact checkers, Trump has repeated this number at least 21 times. But expert says, it is flat wrong. Though estimates vary, experts say the United States spent about $1.8 trillion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and 2017. (Of course, Afghanistan is not in the Middle East, but Trump seems to be including that country in his calculation.) More comprehensive assessments, which look at direct and indirect expenditures from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan Pakistan and Syria, estimate the cost at about $3.6 trillion from 2001 to 2016, according to Brown University study. That figure includes costs tied to veterans' care and disability benefits, along with “war-related additions” to the Department of Homeland Security, the Pentagon and the State Department. As fact-checkers report, the number Trump is citing seems to come from another Brown University report, one that estimates future spending all the way out to 2050. His figure also seems to include, they write, matters such as “interest on the debt and veterans' care for the next three decades.” (A working paper from professors at Harvard Kennedy School estimated the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would ultimately cost taxpayers $4 trillion to $6 trillion.) Here is another thing about the president's tweet: Despite what he said on the campaign trail, Trump has expanded the war effort in Afghanistan. He approved a troop surge there, a decision that added billions to the overall cost of the war in that country. As reported by Steven Mufson, Trump's “decision to send more troops will add billions of dollars a year to the already-towering war costs, which have topped $1 trillion in Afghanistan alone over the past 16 years. And the government will still be paying for war veterans' health-care costs for at least another half-century.” Mufson wrote that U.S. spending in Afghanistan will rise to about $840.7 billion if the president's fiscal 2018 budget is approved. (That estimate comes courtesy of Anthony Cordesman, an expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.) www.concordvibes..com Cc: Lalasticlala Mynd44
