By Wale OLAYANJU A week ago yesterday, Hiphop superstar, 2Baba Idibia announced his intention to lead the "First Massive Nationwide Protests" against the federal government. The protest scheduled for February 6, according to him, is aimed at demanding answers from the government over different issues in the country which include economic recession. Several individuals have come out to blast the singer for this announcement. Some opined 2Baba had no right to demand "change" since he was a sympathizer of the former ruling party. Other described him as a fading musician on recognition drive, who was simply doing the bidding of his paymasters. Since his posh wedding was practically bankrolled by former Governor Godswill Akpabio and other PDP bigwigs, they reasoned, he is just a willing tool in the hands of opposition leaders to score cheap political points. Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said those who are calling for the protest are people who supported the last government and are still pained that they lost the last election. Perhaps, the most caustic reaction was the one from a certain professor, Akindele Adetoye who wrote on his Facebook wall (he has since deleted it and apologized): “You are a bloody illiterate. You had sex with all manners of girls without using condoms. You impregnated them and made babies all over the place. You now want to lead protest against the government because of lack of governance! Have you governed your own personal life? Charity, they say begins at home. Nonsense!” Only a simpleton will write this in reaction to an individual who has decided to express himself in a civil way. With this imbecilic conjecture, this kofeso has just confirmed what the late dadakuada exponent, Odolaiye Aremu said in his "ogbon ori" album that "iwe yato, ogbon ori ma lo je baba". Knowledge is good but wisdom is more valuable. Or how would one explain a professor who can not differentiate between one's private life and his fundamental right? 2Baba might have made mistake. In fact, he made mistakes. No biggies, everyone makes mistakes. Unlike others however, he took responsibilities for his actions, refused abortions and he's today taking care of the results of the "mistakes" as a responsible dad. We know how these accidental professors sleep with their students in the university and recant when they are caught! But I digress! The events leading to the 2015 general elections created a lot of animosity which threatened the peace and existence of a united Nigeria. One expected that immediately after inaugurations, the new government will put on a toga of "no victor, no vanquish" in an attempt to heal the nation. In place of this, what was presented to us was the propoundment of the infamous mathematical formula of " 97%/5% ". According to the propounder, the political reality is to give lion's shares of the government to those who laboured to install him in power. Since then, suspicions have been the order of the day. Every appointment is vetted to see how many have gone to the North, to the South, to the Christians and to the Muslims. Nigeria has never been this divided. We are now divided along party, tribal and religious lines. Besides, the performance of APC government has left us all highly underwhelmed especially when you juxtapose it with their campaign promises and high optimism and expectation from the people. The Buhari’s government is predicated on a tripod: security, war against corruption, and economic progress. It was on this tripod they campaigned against PDP and won. However, almost two years after, Buhari and APC have become everything they accused Jonathan and PDP of. Before, when foreign media talk about insecurity in Nigeria, they are possibly talking about Boko Haram. Today, Boko Haram now have as his relatives, Fulani herdsmen and Niger Delta militia. Election violence, kidnapping and restiveness have taken a dangerous dimension. Their much-advertised war against corruption is now fought and won on the pages of newspapers. Where it is fought at all, it is against the opposition and "enemies" of the kitchen cabinet. The fight is not only selective, it is contradictory and lacks transparency. The economy is the worst hit. Instead of economic progress, what they have given us is economic recession, job losses, high unemployment rate and hunger among others. The economy is today on auto-pilot while the currency is in free-fall. On Thursday, a dollar is exchanged for N503! Few weeks ago, The ECOWAS mediation team led by our president was in Gambia to talk to the then President, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Doctor Lt. Yahya Abdul-Aziz Awal Jemus Junkung Jammeh Naasiru Deen Babili Mansa, on the need to respect the constitution of the country and hand over power. I was telling my friends that what the ECOWAS leaders have done was nothing but a travesty of morality and common sense! I didn't see them as mediators, I only see them as Jammeh's chief boogeymen (AKA kukulaaja. AKA ojuju) who were taking advantage of the (small) size of the country to lord it over Jammeh. Can ECOWAS threaten Nigeria, if the reverse was the case? Now, don't get me wrong. What ECOWAS leaders have done in the Gambia was commendable but the fact remains that some of the so called "mediators" are pot calling the kettle black- hypocrites who suppose to first remove the beam out of their eyes, so they can see clearly to remove the speck out of Jammeh's. For example, there have been several court orders(including that of ECOWAS court) regarding the release of former NSA, Sambo Dasuki, the head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement, Ibrahim El Zakzaky and IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Nigerian government has refused to obey these orders. I laugh when people try to justify government's action because of "the gravity of Dasuki's offence". This government swore to obey the constitution of the country. So, it has a need to respect the rule of law. It cannot choose which court order to obey. If they are not happy with the pronouncements, there is opportunity for them to go back to court. These and many more have presented an opportunity for the opposition parties to stick the proverbial two fingers up at the ruling party. The main role of the opposition in a democracy is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. Any attempt to stop them is an attempt to deny them their legal rights. According to Brian Tracy, followers think and talk about their problems. Leaders think and talk about the solutions. But then the Yorubas are right. Apani ki i je ka mu ida koja nipako oun. A murderer never permits the passage of a sword behind his skull. APC will challenge any form of opposition knowing fully well that they capitalized on mendacious propaganda and protests to get to power. The onus is on them to try to silence us. It is our duty to refuse to be tight-lipped. It is the right of citizens, in a democracy, to conduct peaceful processions, rallies or demonstrations. The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny. This is not the country they promised us. It is not about hating Buhari. It is about the love of the country. We just can't continue like this. We have no other country. Every right-thinking Nigerians should support any activity that will make this government wake up from their slumber. It's crystal clear now that they have run out of ideas. The time has come to force them to seek help. We call for the convening of all stakeholders to find the way forward. The hairdryer treatments (apologies to Sir Alex Ferguson) in the closet by well-meaning Nigerians have refused to produce the desired effect. Now is the time to tell the government in the language they understand: protest. Instead of vilifying 2face, he needs to be supported and encouraged. Since they took over, only the lives of politicians and their cronies have improved. Ecclesiastes admonished us "not to say: 'Why were the old days better than these?', for it is not wise to ask such questions." Regrettably, that has been our lot- Yesterday was better than today! Let us come out enmasse and tell this government that enough is enough. #IStandWith2Baba #IStandWith2Face https://www.facebook.com/WaleAFRICANA/posts/10155006919907840 Lalasticlala |
"In 1998, I saw Buhari. He was then Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund and he asked me to see him in Abuja from Kano which is about 450-500 kilometres. "Upon my arrival, I was lodged at the then NICON NOGA Hotel, the next morning, I joined him in the office at Asokoro over tea. After we had discussed other matters, I gave him the information I had about some dirty business going on in the Finance Department of the PTF. I mentioned names, I gave him details. "And I told him, ‘Don’t trust me because I understand there are some people you normally trust, out of these beneficiaries, get some of them to investigate.’ Then we parted company and I returned to Kano. "Three and a half months later, Buhari himself called me over the telephone and said, ‘Mallam doctor, can we see?’ I said yes. The next day, I went to Abuja and found that a hotel accommodation had been booked for me by one Sali Hidjo who ran the African Projects Consortium, the main consultants to the PTF. "The next day, I went to his (Buhari’s ) office, the first question he asked me was, ‘Mallam doctor, what is your source of information?’ I told him I was not going to let him know my source of information because if I don’t keep my sources private, then I am finished as a public person. "He kept quiet for a while; then he smiled and told me that everything I told him turned out to be correct. In fact, he said there were certain facts that I didn’t get but which he found out. He said he commissioned some people with accounting backgrounds and some officers of the SSS and gave them the freedom to recruit others to do a forensic audit of the records and the team submitted a report to him. They found that everything I said was the truth and he thanked me. "Then I asked him, ‘Sir, General, what do you intend to do with these people since the head of the Mafia-he used the word, not me- was a man who was a director of finance in the PTF was the elder brother of a friend of his, a former military governor. "Buhari said he and the former governor, now late, were friends. He said he (Buhari) he and the former governor had come a long way, that they joined the armed forces around the same time, though in the Air Force. He said they started soldering around the same time; they had been moving around together around the same stations, that they were made (military) governors and sworn in the same day when Murtala (Muhammed) appointed them governors. He was appointed the Governor of the North East and his friend was appointed the governor of North Central state, and they remained close until the man’s sudden death. It was his brother who was the mastermind of this fraud perpetrated under Buhari. "And I said, “General, what are you going to do with these people?’ He said he summoned the culprit and scolded him blah, blah, blah. He said he also summoned the entire staff of the finance department and addressed them. I asked him, “Is that all?’ "I think he realised that I was not satisfied; he said there was nothing he could do. I said it is not your personal money; it is the money belonging to the Nigerian patrimony, money belonging to all of us. If they have been found to have abused public trust, they should be taken to court and dealt with appropriately. If for whatever reason technical or otherwise, they are found not guilty, they should be allowed to go free, but in this situation, you cannot pretend as if nothing has happened. The way and manner you have handled this matter, I assure you no matter the explanation you will want to give about your personal relationships will not suffice.’ "I was not satisfied; Buhari was not satisfied with my position. I stood up, we shook hands, he walked me to the lift, I entered the lift, then my car and left for Kano. "I don’t relate to people who don’t take the truth I tell them, and I am not prepared to be associated with a leader who believes that his personal interest can override that of the public. I believe Nigeria is greater than all of us, including the President and if any of my friends believes their personal interests and that of their dubious cronies are greater than the collective interest of Nigeria, we will part ways." http://punchng.com/buhari-hasnt-convinced-nigerians-passed-school-certificate-examination-junaid-mohammed/ |

No more Saturdays environmental sanitation day in Lagos. Lagos State has cancelled environmental exercises which hitherto held for three hours on the last Saturday of every month. Lagos government noted that considering the present economic situation in the country, it was no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities. |
My attention has been drawn to the above news posted by one obiremy with www.trezzyhelm.com as the source of the news. It will interest all to note that, that man in the picture was not the VP, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN). For the avoidance of doubt, Prof. Osinbajo was not in Akure for the APC rally. Specifically, he was at the graduation ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos on that day. The news about the event is in the media for your perusals. The man in the picture, alleged to be Osinbajo, was indeed Hon (Dr.) Bode Ayorinde (a.k.a Achiever). Dr. Ayorinde is a House of Reps' member representing Owo/Ose Federal constituency of Ondo State. He contested in the controversial APC gubernatorial primary and lost. The APC rally in Ondo State was broadcast by notable television and radio houses and was reported widely by traditional media where the VP was reported to be conspicuously absent. In this era of social media, Nairaland has to be warry of mushroom bloggers whose antics and modus operandi is lifting news from other media and social media and post them without necessary investigation. A simple Google action would have saved the blogger from this embarrassing and unprofessional act. I employ the admin and the moderators of Nairaland to always double-check stories before moving them to the frontpage. Credibility matters and should not be traded for traffic. nairaland should not join the bandwagon of "I want to break the news first". Thank you and God bless. Attention: Seun Lalasticlala

I have just read with utter disappointment a story based on an interaction between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, and some media owners, over the weekend, where he, typical of top officials of this government, blamed his predecessors, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (current Emir of Kano) for the ugly turn of things in the economy. As an unrepentant supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, I am embarrassed, to say the least, by the ceaseless excuses being dished right, left and centre by the government for the horrible state of affairs. While we must put culpability where culpability should be, we must not also lose sight of the fact that we voted in PMB/APC because we believe that GEJ/PDP had failed and that PMB/APC was our alternative. It took us several years, and for PMB four attempts, to unseat PDP. So, we don't want any further excuses. Most sensible Nigerians know the truth about our economy, how it was mismanaged and those that mismanaged it. So, stop reminding us; stop annoying us. What we want to hear now is how you plan to dig us out of this slippery hole. People are hungry and, therefore, angry-justifiably. They are asking questions about how the government intends to rescue the economy. This is not just about the promises PMB/APC made during the elections. I can understand that times have changed and some of the promises may be dead on arrival. Now, that doesn't make them any less a debt, like every promise. It would amount to a breach of trust, if PMB/APC doesn't go back to re-negotiate these promises in the face of the intervening extenuating circumstances-and give us new timeless to deliver them. It's called Managing Expectations. Many have argued rather persuasively, and I am seized of the view, that this may NOT be the A-team to rescue Nigeria from the current dire straits. In my village, we say if the birds fly without perching, the hunters will shoot without aiming. We need such "crazy" hunters right now-"armed", "dangerous" and dead even on moving targets. Nigeria has a generous list of tested, experienced and respected (and RESPONSIBLE) professionals and subject matter experts, both at home and abroad, who can dedicate the next 6-12months of their lives to getting Nigeria out of the current recession. I'm afraid the team we have now is NOT that team, and the sooner PMB realizes that and assembles " the" team, the better for his reputation cum legacy, and the better for Nigerians and Nigeria. As an unrepentant supporter of PMB, the worst thing anybody can say about PMB is that he's clueless, a tag that has been retired with the rightful owner since May 29, 2015. Hell no, he's NOT! I have a pack of Harvard Business Reviews, though, for him. Knowing his sadly unpopular capacity to read on a wide variety of subjects, I advise PMB takes some time off his busy schedule while at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to read these important books to refresh his memory on how to turn things around for the better. He can lend the pack to some of his ministers-those who can read, especially those he won't drop on October 1st as part of the Independence Day anniversary. On a lighter note, someone please whisper to Mr. President that he should not bring back more hunger from UNGA. LOL. May Buhari succeed! *Oparah is the Director, Corporate Communications and CSR, Airtel Nigeria http://www.wilberforce.com.ng/2016/09/enough-of-blame-game-pls-give-this-to.html Lalasticlala

Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, has angered Nigerians over a post he made on his Facebook profile this afternoon. The post which was ostensibly made to help launder the image of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration had carpeted the media and bloggers for misleading the masses and international communities about the correct situation in the country. In the post, Onanuga relayed how he had told his daughter on the Virgin Atlantic Flight to London "to find out whether the plane was filled up or going to London near empty judging by the noisy campaign from a section of the country about the 'hardship' in our country", to which his daughter had replied: "daddy, the flight was filled up o" He then related "how food was cheap everywhere" on his trip to Jos and Bauchi over the weekend. Onanuga ended the post by charging the media to objectively conduct a reality check about their reports, which he described as "over sensationalising so-called hardship" the country is passing through. The post immediately sparked anger with Nigerians taking to Facebook to attack the journalism giant for being insensitive to the plight of the masses. Many Nigerians who commented on the matter expressed strong views while practically calling him a failure as Managing Director and Editior-in-Chief of TheNews/. Onanuga was the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of TheNEWS/ before he was appointed MD of NAN in May this year. Bayo Onanuga's post My daughter was on the Virgin Atlantic Flight that took off from Lagos to London today. I asked her to find out whether the plane was filled up or going to London near empty judging by the noisy campaign from a section of the country about the 'hardship' in our country.https://www.facebook.com/bayo.onanuga/posts/10157389494535111 See Nigerians responses below

By Wale OLAYANJU On Friday 3 June, 2016, an Oshogbo High Court granted willing female Muslim students the right to wear hijab (veil) in Osun State’s public primary and secondary schools. The case was instituted in 2013 by the state’s Muslim Community against the state government on the imposition of bans on wearing of hijab to school. Following the ruling, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejected it saying they will not allow the wearing of hijab in schools established by Christian missionaries. They also threatened to direct Christian pupils to wear choir robes and other church garments to public schools should the state government implements the court judgment on hijab. As if acting this script, some Christian secondary school students in the state on Tuesday started wearing church garments to their schools. Nothing describes the current controversy better that the proverbial adage of “eru amukun”. Won ni amukun eru e wo. O ni: oke le nwo, e o wo ’sale. The cripple, to the observation that the load carried atop his head was skewed, directed the observer’s gaze to the legs, saying the top was not the source of the problem, but the legs. It is a known fact that religious difference has never been an issue in Yorubaland as we all strive to live together peacefully with one another. It is however strange that a small issue like hijab’s will cause unbridled suspicion and animosity in a state that has continued to be known as safest and the most peaceful in the whole of Nigeria. That Osun is currently embroiled in this imbroglio is traceable to Ogbeni’s strange, untested and controversial education policy of 2013. In 2013, Aregbe in his effort to “revolutionize” education in the state had rolled out several reforms in the education sector in the state. The reforms include policies on re-classification of schools, merger of schools, common uniform and opon imo (tablets of knowledge) among others. The schools re-classification policy led to a new school system where we now have the 4-6-3-4 system instead of the usual 6-3-3-4 and 9-3-4 systems. This involved the restructuring of primary and secondary schools into elementary, middle and high schools. The Elementary Schools cater for pupils grouped into Grades 1 to 4 as against the old Primary 1 – 4. The Middle schools cater for pupils and students who are grouped into Grades 5 to 9 as against the old designation of primary 5 and 6 and JSS 1 – 3. High Schools are grouped into Grades 10 to 12 as against SSS 1 – 3. The implications of this new school system include the phasing out of single sex schools, the merger of schools within the same geographical location irrespective of their religious or community ownership backgrounds, and demolition of old school structures after students had been relocated to new premises. A direct result of this is that incongruous schools and students were merged together while pupils now have to walk long distances to get to their new schools. Perhaps the most controversial of Aregbe’s education policy was the introduction of unified school uniform which can only be sewn by government through its garment factory. With this policy, every students now wear common uniform and identity, no matter what school they go to. According to Aregbe, “the decision to give the students common uniform was made with the aim of giving them a common identity and purpose, as well as a sense of unity and pride, which had been lost in the decay that set in public schools in Osun before this administration.” Ordinarily, a common uniform supposed to help prevent gangs from forming on campus, encourage discipline, help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes, help identify intruders in the school, diminish economic and social barriers between students, increase a sense of belonging and school pride and improve attendance. However, the reverse has been the case in Osun. It has created chaos, general instability and increased level of indiscipline and cultism in many of the merged schools. When you see students these days, you are unable to tell which school they are from because they all look the same. There have been rampant cases of clashes among students of different religious persuasions. Baptist High School, Iwo and St Mark’s Commercial High School, Oshogbo are examples. There have been cases of frequent instabilities at BHS, Iwo while St Mark’s Osogbo was once shut down after cultists within the school clashed. There have also been reported cases of miscreants who parade the streets in unified common uniform wreaking havoc because it’s not easy to trace or identify them. There is no doubt that the hijab controversy in Osun is as a result of this ill-thought-out and poorly-conceived policy of the government. The people of Osun are aware of this, unfortunately many are afraid to speak out against the government. There is however a need to nip it in the bud before it turns violent. The government of Osun has to swallow its pride, make a U-turn and reverse this unpopular policy. If a policy that was meant to strengthen unity is causing further polarization, it calls for concern. There is an urgent need to restore peace to the state of the living spring and I do not think legal solution is the answer at this time. In the alternative, government can have a review of the re-classification of school such that congruous schools and students are merged together with liberty to wear hijab, if they so desire. In conclusion, government needs to consult extensively with public and stakeholders before embarking on policies that can have direct impact on religion, future of our children and the peace of the state. Democracy is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154287749297840 |

I was walking on Demuren street in Ketu, Lagos when I suddenly found myself on Peckham High Street, London. Right where Obalende suya used to stand was this new edifice with a giant signpost which read "Edible Catering" with a faint tagline "we deliver knock-out service" Out of curiosity, I decided to enter the restaurant. In one of the corners was TJ, the trending man in town, discussing with about four ladies in uniform. The moment he saw me, he excused himself and was walking towards me. "Wale, I have been looking for you", he called. Startled, I asked, "How did you know my name and what for?" TJ: Forget matter. You think I didn't see what you guys are posting on social media? Me: Posts? Which posts? The memes you were posting about me and my ex-wife. Ex-wife? But the court has not granted the divorce? Has it? You guys have refused to hear me out before coming to your conclusions and it is unfair. I thought you have stated your own side of the story with those Instagram posts. No. My account was hacked. I did not post those bullsh*ts. Wasn't me. But is it not true that you duped her while you were her manager and she was the one housing, feeding, clothing and also giving you pocket money? Kini big deal? Look, I made her. Have you seen her picture when she started? I took her up from the gutter, refined her, paid for her ticket to Nigeria, produced and paid for her first video. I did everything for her. She should be eternally grateful to me. Without me, there was no her. What has she done for me? (Singing Obey's song): Kin l'enikan se, t'enikan o se ri, E ma hale mo Kayode mi.. From your complaint about her not cooking for you to your saving a number with "edible catering" and now this new restaurant, you must like food, bros. Look, are you not a Nigerian? Have you not heard that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and not through hip-hop? When she refused to cook at home claiming celeb and breadwinner, won't I found a mean of satisfying myself? Satisfying yourself? Including getting knock out? I didn't sleep with no edible whatever. She only cooks for me while my wife was partying around with Jazzy and Dr. Sid. But how can a caterer be calling you at 2:00am? Tiwa was just being jealous and unnecessarily possessive. You know the nature of our work now. We can eat at any time of the day. By tie way, there was no 2am. It was around after 1am. Is it true that you wanted to commit suicide? Me? Mo ku ti! James Bond l'omo latile. That was their fertile imagination. See, have you seen any of our politicians resign before? We be African, e no dey our DNA. How can I kee myself when this world is so sweet: s'aiye, s'omo, se'go! That was a pure Jackie Chan move. Emi? Kee mysef? Tufiakwa? But N45m? What did you do with that kind of amount? Investment, of course! Look at this place. To get this kind of edifice in highbrow London, e easy? Since she fired me as her manager, I no go survive and establish something for myself. Or, don't you like this place? Talk true. (smiles) Of course, I do. But, is that why you named it Edible Catering? This place used to be called Obalende Suya Express Restaurant. Well, I don't know what you are talking about. That is pure co-incidence. What are you doing about the name? Have you registered or patented it? You know our people, tomorrow you may start hearing things like "Miss Edible Catering", "Face of Edible Catering", "Edible Catering Ambassador" etc etc Laughs. I have no comments. Now, you claimed she took your manhood away? If she takes you manhood away, how was "edible catering" able to knock you out? I told you my account was hacked. Am I Mike Tyson that was knocked out by Buster Douglas? There was no knock out anywhere. Even at that, does your wife know all your secrets? Omo Oodua ni mi ke. Emi? Gbogbo ara kiki ija. Fiile bee. I have reservoir. Ta a ba ni ka m'oni, ola la maa mu. What evidence do you have that your wife was bleeping Jazzy, Dr. Sid and 2face? What evidence does she have that I was bleeping em.. em.. edible catering? But she saw the evidence on your phone now? What right has she to be checking my phone? Don't we have right to privacy in our constitution again? Besides, have you being to Jazzy studio before? Do you know Jazzy studio doubles as his home? Bros, you know now. E ma fi nu mi, mo moo je. I no be mungun now. Na condition make crayfish bend o. We know how e dey roll. But, you still do not have a concrete evidence. Have you listened to the lyrics of Dorobucci? No, I have not? Go and listen to it. You tell me Ok, let me sing it for you. #Singing Jazzy sings: doro big, doro heavy, doro skillful, doro bloody. Dr Sid sings: doro carry, doro hammer, doro pako, doro knack pass carpenter wey don dey knack before. Then D'Prince said doro is a cheerful giver. Imagine? But they were just singing now, Doro is just a slang. Idiot. You don't know anything. I'd reasoned along that line until my goons called my attention to it. Who is the doro that is a cheerful giver? Now, listen to my wife's line. She said: doro na diva.... Doro na Tiwa.... She no dey tire.... Tired of what? But that still did not completely prove she was sleeping with them. What do you know? You don't know those guys. They kiss and tell. When Jazzy sing Eminado. what do you think he was saying? It is a code. Eminado is a Yoruba word. It means: Emi naa do (I also bleep her). That mean they are passing her around. How many husbands can take this? How many? She has offered to take a lie detector test to show that she was not sleeping with them. Hehehehehe. Lie detector. Hahahahahaha. Why can't she suggest ayelala. Or is she not a Yoruba woman again? Is lie detector our culture? Are we oyibos? Sango is there, Ogun is there, obatala is there, she is talking about lie detector. You seem not to know Nigerians. By the time our people operate on that lie detector, even the lie detector will call itself a lier. I can only believe her if she is ready to swear by ayelala, sango or ogun. Then, why can't you propose that to her? Aha, I know her, she will never swear because she is doing it. She will soon start saying she is a christian, blah blah blah. A woman that has refused to sleep with me for months, where is she getting it from? Someone that I know well well. Abi, no be hin sing "she no dey tire"? Let her follow me to Ondo and swear by ayelala. I am ready to pay for our transport, to and fro. So, you mean your wife is hot and ..... Don't talk to my wife in such a manner. Dear Linda, Let me start by congratulating you on your contribution to the world of blogging in Nigeria. There is no way the story of blogging will be written without you occupying a prominent place in it. I will also like to congratulate you on the purchase of your N500m banana mansion. I pray God will complete your testimony by granting your heart desire in the area of matrimony. I write to refer to your rift with Wizkid. We thank God this has been amicably settled. I see it as a good development, as it hopes to put a lot of things into perspectives in an emerging profession like blogging. I observed that since December when you erroneously reported that the management of ABTI American University, Yola paid Wizkid N8m for performance which he failed to honour and the reaction of Wizkid to that news, your reports about him on your blog has changed for the worse. Following your “exclusive” report about Wizkid’s ejection notice and the hullabaloo that followed, you wrote in an attempt to defend yourself that Wizkid had requested for an opportunity to meet with and explain himself to you. This request was turned down, because “it will affect your job.” Dear Linda, let me tell you that this is unfair. RIGHT OF REPLY In journalism, there is what they call ‘right of reply.’ It is the right to defend oneself against public criticism in the same venue where it was published. In several countries, persons who believe they have been portrayed in a false light by a media report are entitled by law to have a reply published by the same outlet. It is a known fact that bloggers are either ignorant of this or they do not want to encourage this in order not to question their credibility. You will recall that you wrote a story about Chris Okotie in 2013, alleging that the pastor was supporting Christians having tattoos. The man of God wrote a rebuttal and sent it to you. Did you publish it? I will also like to emphasize that a piece by a trained and ethical journalist, at least attempts to give opposing sides an opportunity to respond before the article is published. It is time you incorporate this into your job ethics. When a story is sent to your email box there is a need for you to do a little independent verification of information and data and hear from the opposing side before you rush to press. PRIVACY This brings me to the issue of privacy. Section 37 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees and protects “the privacy of citizens, their homes, correspondence telephone conversations and telegraphic communications”. Privacy covers anything that a person might reasonably expect to keep from becoming public knowledge. It could include some facts that are known by some, but not by all. The Code of Ethics for journalist draws attention to the need to protect the privacy of an individual. As a general rule, a journalist should respect the privacy of individuals and their families UNLESS IT AFFECTS PUBLIC INTEREST. In his book "Media Laws and Ethics in Multicultural Nigerian Environment”, Nwanne, B.U. wrote and I quote: “It is a universal fact that news is all about human beings – their activities, actions, inactions, mistakes, foibles, achievements and others. However, in reporting these activities, the reporter must show a high level of professionalism and introspection so that an individual’s reputation is not needlessly destroyed or his/her privacy unnecessarily invaded. This is because every individual deserves a measure of privacy, depending on the level of intimacy he/she has with other members of society. A person whose privacy is recklessly invaded is empty and even Unclad. This affects his/her mental and emotional stability, with negative consequences on his reasoning and by extension, productivity. Such a person is often not in a position to meaningfully contribute to natural development efforts.” PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES It is a known fact that majority of you bloggers and journalists cannot take half of what you write about others. Let me remind you of this story: In February, you innocently shared a photo of Hermes handbag (which you claimed set you back by $14,000), on your Instagram page and immediately social media trolls came for you calling the handbag a fake. Do you remember the number of posts and pictures you uploaded in an attempt to prove that the bag was real? Do you remember how you were insulting the “haters” saying the bag cost more than their cars? Can you recollect people were practically begging you to stop before you eventually apologized? That is Linda that has a platform to explain herself to the public. What about your victims who have no platform? When you write your reports do you try to imagine yourself in the same circumstances with your victims? Do you imagine their circumstances and try to understand their mindset and emotions at that time. How would you react if such was written about you at such a time? All artists rely on the positive feedback from the media for their patronage of the audience and the corporate clients. They will do anything to protect it. "BUT I HAVE TO DO MY JOB" Each time you’re challenged by what you write, the excuse you have always given has been: "But, I have to do my job". I ask you, what job? How? At whose expense? If you have a job to do, are you aware that I also have my privacy (to protect) and there is no law that grant you access to report (anything) about me? Let it also be emphasized here that, as at now, bloggers are not recognized by our law with the responsibilities of reporting news. Only journalists are saddle with that responsibility and even in doing that they need to do it according to the ethics of the profession. Let me at this point ask you, where is the ethics of blogging that you refer to in the process of doing your job? Professional Ethics In any profession, there is what we call professional ethics. They are professionally accepted standards of personal and business behavior, values and guiding principles. Codes of professional ethics are often established by professional organizations to help guide members in performing their job functions according to sound and consistent ethical principles. As at today, there is no code of ethics for blogger and content creator. While we are still waiting for a body to come up with one, there is a need for bloggers to be responsible in their discharge of duties. You cannot destroy a brand to build yours! Besides, we have the code of ethics for journalists. Even though bloggers are not journalists, they can study this and use it as a standard to guide themselves. We should also remember that there is the cybercrimes (prohibition, prevention, etc) act, 2015 which was signed into law by Goodluck Jonathan at the twilight of his administration. There is a need to every online creator to study it to know the limit of their rights and the consequences thereof. As much as we all condemned public threat, statements like "I will mess up your career", "you are a kid", "you are a deadbeat" are unprofessional on a brand like yours and can in fact be proven to be threats by a good lawyer. As a professional, you have a responsibility to examine your motives and ensure that your own personal feelings and emotions do not influence what you report, who you talk to, or determine which elements of the story you highlight. You also need to think carefully about the language and tone you use to ensure that it doesn't give an inaccurate and unfair representation of the facts. I wish you well. This is the second part of this piece. If you miss the first part, please read it before continuing with this. Thank you. Collaborations The new media team should not work as an Island. They should work with other government MDA’s to identify suitable content and topics to use. They should posts content from all government program areas choosing news items, links, videos, photos and other resources on an as-needed basis. The goal is not to post a large quantity of content, but to choose quality content that would be of interest to the citizens, and that either strengthens the image or recognition of their principals. They are also expected to accept submissions of content for review and posting. Community Participation One of the things to know when developing your social media strategy is to learn to participate in your community. In a social media situation you will discover that there are a lot of different conversations going on. There isn’t any need to try to dominate every conversation that you come across. But if you participate in these conversations and offer helpful advice that is honest and answer questions wherever possible you will begin to see the networking possibilities. To create credibility for a brand, you need to engage in a way that will allow the followers to feel comfortable in expressing their opinions. If you do this appropriately the audience will feel as if you are providing information and not trying to sell your principal. Election times are over. Now is not the time to use every given opportunity to unduly hero-worship your principals or criticize his opponents. The main reason why people participate in these social sites is because they wish to meet new people and have conversations which enlightens them about their leaders. Conflict Management In a world where everybody is connected, everybody is at risk. It is not uncommon these days to experience venting of anger and frustration on the media. Unfortunately many media practitioners often think about the product itself and focus on the marketing aspect and less on what happens when there are crisis and conflicts on their platforms. That is not enough! There is a need for new media managers to have the skills to manage problems when they appear. Waiting and seeing is not the good strategy. Just like any conflict, a misunderstanding on a social platform tends to get big very fast. The big difference is that it can get to thousands of followers in seconds and eventually take your brand down. In view of the above, any serious media manager should have at least minimal training in conflict resolution, conflict management, crisis management and understands the importance of quality-oriented customer relations (even more on social media platforms). The new media team must also as a matter of urgency come up with a policy to manage conflict. There are so many tips to handle complaints, negativity or inappropriateness online. However, what works for one may not necessary work for others. Besides, Nigeria is a peculiar case study. What works abroad may not necessarily work here. In all, the real drivers of an effective social media campaign are based on the psychology of social behaviors not the current technology. New Media and the future This idea of personalizing the official social media account of office holder is becoming outdated. We have to look beyond the present occupier of an office and see new media as a public tool. For instance, Obama has long had a “personal” page called Barack Obama. Similarly, the official “POTUS” page that launched this past November is a personal outlet for Obama, with all content coming from him. But once the US has a new president, it’ll be their official Facebook outlet, just like every other social media accounts. This can be replicated in Nigeria. The fact that it was the current president that created @NGRPresident Twitter handle does not mean it is his personal property. It should be managed in such a way that it is handed over when his tenure expires. Government is a continuum. New Media team and their Principal Obama dominated the social media space because his team got how networks work. The real power of social media is not in the number of posts or Tweets but in user engagement measured by content spreadability. Increasingly, the White House is using Obama to break news over social media. His first reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling establishing a right to same-sex marriage nationwide in June was on Twitter, where he called the decision “a big step in our march toward equality.” He added the hashtag #LoveWins, which quickly became a trending topic. Agreed, Obama is tech-savvy, but there is nothing wrong in the media teams in Nigeria initiating their principals into the world of technology. Instead of issuing press releases to react to issues or announcing their plans, they can actually tweet them and respond to people’s reply. And what is wrong in conducting interviews on social media? I am a lover of social media interviews, especially Live Twitter interviews (twitterviews). I find the format to be very interesting and informative. Twitter allows you a maximum of 140 character, so both the interviewer and interviewee do not have the luxury of being wordy. It presents meaningful exchange without wasting time. In addition to this, all conversations on Twitter (other than direct messages) are public. This means that your audience can actually participate in the interview as it’s happening! If you add a hash tag to your interview, you can track the conversation over a period of time without getting lost in other ongoing conversations. On January 15 this year, Youtube conducted a live interview with President Obama when the team met him at the White House. We can also do it. Conclusion In conclusion, social media engenders participatory democracy. It creates a new political dialogue, taking the power of political messaging away from the mass media model and placing it firmly into peer-to-peer, public discourse. Social media creates multiple levels of trust based on relationships. It is my hope that new media teams will take advantage of this as they attempt to strengthen the image and recognition of their principal’s brand. Introduction On Thursday February 18, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Tolu Ogunlesi as his Special Assistant on Digital/New Media. Tolu will head the president’s new media team. There is no gainsaying the fact that social media played a decisive role in helping Buhari become the first Nigerian to oust a sitting president at the ballot box and Tolu is one of the generals in the foray. Before then the Social Media President, Barack Obama had in 2007 employed social media to create an unforeseen force to raise money, organize locally, fight smear campaigns and get out the vote that helped them topple the Clinton machine and then John McCain and the Republicans. It is therefore no surprise to see politicians today incorporating new media as an integral part of their media team. With it you can reach more people without the filter of the traditional media, target your audience with precision and receive almost immediate feedback. However, because we are just learning the ropes in this part of the world, the tactics and strategies employed by the handlers have left a lot to be desired. Most of them have remained routine, predictable and overly cautious. Their focus has remained the contents to the detriment of how to effectively and efficiently communicate them to the public. In this piece, I tried to offer insight into how new media works in political communication and the strategies to adopt in selling a political brand. What is New Media? According to Wikipedia, New media refers to content available on-demand through the Internet, accessible on any digital device, usually containing interactive user feedback and creative participation. A defining characteristic of new media is dialogue. New Media transmit content through connection and conversation. It enables people around the world to share, comment on, and discuss a wide variety of topics. Unlike any of past technologies, New Media is grounded on an interactive community. From the above, we can see that the essence of new media in the life of a politician is to promote political participation among his followers. The goal is to bring a sense of spontaneity and accessibility to one of the most choreographed and constricted positions. New Media Channels Contrary to the current practices of many appointees in Nigeria, new media is not about Facebook and Twitter alone. Several social media channels are needed as means to spread news, post unique content, reinforce the brand and engage with stakeholders. There is a need to understand that not everyone is on Twitter. Even the ubiquitous Facebook isn’t the right social media solution for every audience. Understanding who your target are, where they are connecting, and providing them useful information is what makes social media successful. For example, Barack Obama has a presence on basically every social network of note, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, podcasting, MySpace, TUMBLR, Google+ and YouTube. In January this year, he joined Snapchat in order to connect with those on that platform, and his team is skilled at using all these channels to campaign, communicate and entertain his millions of followers. Content is chosen based on audience and relevance, using each channel’s unique strengths to best present the information. The media team should constantly monitor best practices of social media use and experimenting with content types that work best with each channel. Single Source of Information We hope with the coming on board of Ogunlesi, we will now have a single source official account for each of the president’s media channels. The current practice where information is not centralized and you have to visit Femi Adeshina, Garba Shehu and the APC accounts to know what is happening with the president is inadequate. @NGRPresident Twitter handle is operated from Aso Rock. Unfortunately, this account was updated last on December 30, 2015 during the inaugural media chat of Mr. President. This should be taken over immediately by the new media team and make it the single source of news on Twitter for Mr. President. The same can be replicated for all other social media accounts. It is a misnomer to follow Tolu Ogunlesi on Twitter before we can read tweets on latest information/activities of Mr. President. Tolu’s account should be for his personal endeavor and/or as a compliment to Mr. President’s official account. There is a need to separate the wheat from the chaff. Boardroom Strategies The media team should have ambitious plan for digital presence of their principals and should use a variety of unique techniques to engage different online audiences. For example, President Obama’s digital team is presently consists of about 20 aides, led by Jason Goldman, a 39-year-old former executive at Twitter, Blogger and Medium. They spend their days managing his social media accounts, including live-tweeting presidential speeches in 140-character squibs from the White House Twitter account and using analytics to track which issues may be most ripe for a web video or graphic and then producing them. The team starts the day by attending communications meetings to help figure out when Mr. Obama should insert himself into the digital mix and alert him when something is trending on Twitter or generating heavy traffic on Facebook. This is how new media should run. New media should not be only for uploading statements and addresses. There should be a daily plan on what is to be done, what is trending, which matter to respond to and inform the president accordingly. … Continue in Part II http://www.channel801.com/new-media-and-political-communications-strategies-and-tactics-i/ |
I have been following the "developing" story of the feud among the Okoye singing and dancing twins, P-Square, and their older brother Jude, but not with keen interest. The reason is because musicians (performing artistes, generally) by their nature, are given to squabbles, which are, sometimes, orchestrated to attract attention. Of course, many of the fights are real and often lead to splits, legal actions and even deaths, in extreme cases. Needless recounting some of them as we have a surfeit of such well-known fights locally and internationally. So, why am I on about the P-Square fight, which, according to latest news, has led to the split of the twins? Among the reasons being adduced for their disagreement and eventual split is the role of the women in their lives. Interestingly, I know Lola, Peter's wife, having worked with her in V-mobile, now Airtel. Even so, I cannot say what her role has been in the whole saga and I don't want to personalize the issues, but I want to dismiss the insinuation that the bickering among the erstwhile "tight" is a result of the influence of their wives. Let me start by saying that a family means man, wife (wives) and children. Any other person, including siblings, parents, cousins, aunties, uncles, nephews and nieces are part of the extended family. The moment a man marries, the definition of "family" must change otherwise there will be trouble. Let me put it on record immediately that I am NOT advocating total abandonment of the extended family, but that must come only after the immediate family. So, if you, a man, used to consult your mom or dad or brother or sister or uncle or auntie before taking a decision, your wife becomes your primary source of advice as soon as you get married. This is a reality most young men do not face until they start facing problems. According to the Holy Bible in Mathew 19:46. Jesus said: "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH '? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." Under normal circumstances, this quote wouldn't require any explanation or interpretation but the extended family system practiced in Africa, especially in Nigeria and particularly the kind we have in the South East, has tended to undermine this crucial Biblical injunction. And this is one reason some people, in hasty generalization, have concluded that the Okoyes are being manipulated by their wives and as such have lost the "anointing" of carrying on together. Now, much as I do not have any evidence to the contrary, I wager that the men rather than their wives are architects of their current conditions. Primary among my reasons for saying so is that if indeed their feud is engineered by their wives or one of the wives, then they have failed in managing their wives. Any man who cannot control his wife's excesses and vice versa is not serious. Secondly, any brother who doesn't recognize his brother's wife and her important place in his life is foolish. Thirdly, any brothers who do not pre-empt the influence of their wives even before they marry and plan for such an eventuality are not wise. Fourthly, how much acculturation do men give their wives when they are bringing them into a strongly-knit family, if there's anything so called. Fifthly, and this is for those who erroneously believe that because they are twins, Peter and Paul are not supposed to fight, the fact of blood relationship doesn't obliterate the fact of individual differences. The last point is at the core of my submission. As siblings grow and acquire experience (socialization) they begin to manifest their differences. Even identical twins. Even Siamese twins! This is even more so when they get married and form their own families and begin to deal with other dynamics of life and living. So, as we say in Mbaise, if the music changes, the dance steps must also change. If you used to barge into your brother's bedroom before, you must knock and wait to be admitted, after he gets married. It could be as simple as that! Unfortunately, most guys prefer to play the ostrich with regards to their change in status and especially with regard the consequences-until trouble starts. And even when trouble does start, they pretend there's no trouble and avoid confronting it until it snowballs into a crisis, like we are currently witnessing with P-Square. Perhaps, a stitch in time could have saved nine. So, I posit that the importance attached to extended families is exaggerated. While it is not a bad idea in the strict sense of the word, it has the potential to cause rifts, divisions and wars. By the way, who hasn't heard about sibling rivalry? In most cases, it starts even without spouses-as kids and teenagers. It's just there. Vicious, at times. Unforgiving. Never-ending. And as soon as the spouses arrive, they are so easily and unjustifiably made into scapegoats. Gentlemen, while I urge prayers and wish divine intervention in the sustainable existence of family ties, a lot depends on the man to protect his wife and at the same time safeguard the cohesion of the extended family. In the face of a choice, I'd rather keep my wife and children (my immediate family) than hang self-destructively on the other one. So, in the case of Peter and Paul Okoye, if they have to split to make progress and avoid uglier consequences, let them split. After all, one mother can birth but not one god (chi) creates. It might as well be that the individual differences which Peter and Paul have successfully masked over the years can no longer be hidden. Let's not rush to blame the wives, if we don't have compelling evidence other than our African tendency to blame the women for every family feud. By the way, I can't verify an insider gossip that this imbroglio has nothing to do with the women, but mostly with one of the twins, who's a lavish spender and more extroverted. Jude being the older brother and Manager, of course, wanted to control him but Peter won't have it and wanted him fired. Paul won't have that, and so they came to this sorry pass. NB: Notice that I kept using man and wife. That is because I am strongly of the view and inclination that marriage is (and has to be) between a man and a woman, male and female-as God ordained it. However, I'm pro-choice, which means, I won't bother with any choices you have decided to make in the matter, so long as they do not affect me directly. Even my male dogs know so. Section 14 subsection (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 states: "The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few States or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that Government or any of its agencies." As controversial as this section of the constitution might look, it promotes national unity, fosters national loyalty and gives every citizen of Nigeria a sense of belonging to the nation notwithstanding the diversities of ethnic origin, culture, language or religion. The chief argument of the opponent of the federal character principle is that it undermines merit. I believe there is minimum requirement for appointment into any post and this merit is not a closed shop. It is not the exclusive preserve of any particular section, geopolitical zone, State, or ethnic nationality. Nigeria is a delicate union where meaning is read to every movement (appointment in this case) of the government of the day. Part of what contributed to the "rejection" of Jonathan government in the South West was the alleged exclusion of Yorubas from "sensitive" appointments. I hope President Muhammadu Buhari will not allow allow the "enemies" of his supportes to look them in their faces and tell them:'Ntoor, have we not warned you about this man?' As controversial as the federal character principle may look, it is enshrined in the constitution and any lopsided appointment by any government is illegal and unconstitutional, at least until this section is amended. I have also noticed how he has, by error of omission or commission, been appointing only men. Is he also telling us that there are no qualified women in this country to hold most of these posts? How many women has he appointed since he assumed that exalted posts? Baba must watch it... https://www.facebook.com/wale.olayanju/posts/10153606131022840 |
I refer to the trending rape case involving a Unilag Lecturer and the 18-year old prospective student and submit as below. ( In case you have not read the story, please, click here to do that http://www.punchng.com/news/why-i-raped-my-friends-teenage-daughter-unilag-lecturer/ ) The issue of rape, in Nigeria today, has become an everyday crime that it is high time government at all levels took drastic action against the perpetrators. Despite the fact that capital punishment is becoming outlawed throughput the world, some people are still advocating its imposition for whoever is found guilty of rape. That is an indication of the extent the criminal act is viewed. It is wrong, morally, spiritually, legally and what have you. Parents also have a greater role to play in educating their wards about sex education as well as on the need to earn their trust. There is no other time than now, that children have to be free to confide on their parents. The case of the 18-year old lady in the story above is that of someone who is either naive, mischievous or got carried away by the promise of an admission by a randy university lecturer. There are many areas in her story that did not add up and these may be as a result of the three reasons itemised above. Let us considered some plots of the story. 1. Many opportunities had presented themselves as to the aim of this lecturer prior to their arrival at the ground zero. Or how would you describe a situation where your dad's friends was touching you, having an intimate discussions with you and even volunteering to take you to places of interest in Lagos? This supposed to have served as a warning to the innocent girl as to the intention of the lecturer. 2. She confessed that the man kept standing and moving around the office and was practically restless. Do you need an angel to tell you that such a man has evil intention? 3. Later, he went outside and when he came back inside, he locked the door and kept the key on his table. Yet, she claimed "I did not know what was happening" Next time you see such a man, he is about to teach you how to prepare amala and ewedu with abula. #yeyenatu 4. The lecturer added "I realised that I needed to lie down a little and did not want my shirt to be rumpled. When I pulled it off, she even told me not to mind her presence that since it was my office, I could do whatever I wanted" Haba, someone removed his cloth having padlocked the door and you still did not juba-ehoro. Infact, this lady 'na suegbe' (apologises to Baba 70) 5. “A moment later, he told me to pick up a paper for him beside the couch. As I bent down to pick up the paper, he pushed me into a corner of the couch and held me down as he forcibly removed my trousers and underwear.” O'boy, this girl don watch Nollywood taya, I swear. 6. The lecturer claimed "The truth is that, while I was putting on a condom, she stood by and waited" If indeed this lecturer had the luxury of putting on condom before committing the act, then I will "comment my reserve" here. 7. She claimed that she actually screamed but that the way he held her down did not allow her voice to be as audible as she had wanted it to be. “If people were around the office, they would have heard me shout. He held me down, and pulled down my trousers and underwear." Talk true, you no shout. Ok. OK.. you shout, but na small small. We are talking of a time of around after 8am. Why can't you turn his office upside down? You be gbewudani ni ndan? Chexooox of Ebute-Metta! Na grade A omogo be dis 18-year old nah! 8. For nine days after the incident, she was in pain. She was scared but she had no choice but to endure the pain since she couldn’t imagine telling her parents the unimaginable trauma she had been subjected to that led to the pains she was going through. “How could I face them? How could I tell them that the man they handed me over to, to help process my admission, had raped me?” What is the big deal in confiding on your parents? Agreed that rape victim are usually afraid of the stigma associated with it, but this should be about your parents, dear. 9. Her parents eventually got to know what their daughter had passed through.... So if they had not found out or the pains had not become unbearable, it wouldn't have been reported?
