Those that declared today as the first day of fasting took the decision long before Ramadan. They believe (without any reference to moon sighting on the last day of Shaaban) that Shaaban MUST be 29. Two weeks ago, during His Jumu'a sermon, My local Imam declared today as 1st day of Ramadan. Yet, I don't know the basis for the ASSERTION that Shaaban MUST be 29, because, according to the Prophet ( peace be upon Him), we should count Shaaban to 30 if we couldn't sight the moon on 29th. The fact is that some Imams followed calendar rather than moon sighting. Our local Imam, during his sermon on Friday 28th June said that it was agreed at the Imam's meeting held in Ibadan that Ramadan begins tomorrow. To me, it was too early to decide such. Meanwhile, every mosque in my local observed tarawih tonite. |
