at the start of 98/99, no one gave united a chance in europe. they weren't even the best team in england. the only united players with the world class status were schmeichel & stam.

in other words, united did it like greece in euro 2004 or porto in the same year. beckham won a silver ball cos he's english & his team won the champions league. in terms of contribution to the team, he did less than valencia/young in their debut seasons for us.
