That's the right thing to do. That ship has sailed away. |
That's larger than the economy of west, east and central Africa bundled together. Steve Jobs will be turning in his grave now |
There are times, and there are seasons. Below is a classic example. (Even though they are picking up once more)

3 years into Muhammadu Buhari's second spell at leading Nigeria, Nigerians (including myself) have had a first hand experience of life under the leadership of two two individuals distinct personalities. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Jonathan held sway for 6 years. As a quiet, soft spoken individual, he came across to many people as an accidental polictian due to the way his political journey panned out. In 2011, Jonathan enjoyed an overwhelming support from Nigerians during the general elections to win his first full term as president. Within 4 years, all that goodwill had weaned. His inability to tame his wife PEJ and put an end to the Bokoharam insurgency in the north east, coupled with challenges with power saw him brandished as Mr. Clueless. In an attempt to save monies from the Excess Crude oil account rather than sharing it all to states, he fell out with many state Governors. Although the governors worn the battle, their camp was already divided. He and his party (PDP) fell out with a hand full of members who broke away as the New PDP that entered into alliance with the CPC and ACN to form the APC we know today. At the tail end of his term as president, he came under intense pressure and attacks from both the International and local communities, mainly for his handling of the insurgency which most felt he took advantage of to score cheap political points. For example, the postponement of the 2015 general elections for security reasons. The Financial times got brutal when they refferd to him as an ineffectual buffon in one of their 2015 publications. He might not have been eloquent, proactive or supper smart at politicking, but he was genuinely loved by many for his non desperadoes approach to issues. At the height of the 2015 elections, he came out to say that his reelection bid was not worth the blood of any Nigerian, and he lived his words when he gracefully conceded defeat at the polls. Something very rear in this part of the world. He remains a hero and a poster boy/man of free and credible elections to many. Muhammadu Buhari Buhari is not new to Nigeria's political landscape both as a former military president, and as a 'reformed democrat'. He contested for president in 2003(APP), 2007(ANPP), 2011(CPC) and 2015(APC) (eventually emerging victorious). In 2015, he rode to victory on the back a tidy and well executed campaign adopting change as a mantra, with lots of promises to end the bokoharam insurgency and create 3million jobs. Parading as an anti corruption crusader, he promised to nip corruption in the bud, and at one time declaring he 'belonged to every body and belonged to nobody'. Nigerians clearly wanted a change. They wanted a man with girth, and considering his military background, that opportunity wouldn't have come at a better time. Buhari became the face of change, hope and relief, (at least at that time), and teaming up with Bola Tinubu, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amechi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso to mention but a few, wrestled power from the PDP in a tightly contested 2015 general elections. Nigerians found a relief, but it wouldn't last. 6 months into his tenure, Buhari still hadn't formed his cabinet. The general feeling was that he was assembling a cabinet of technocrats with high integrity, so Nigerians waited anyways, but when names like Ogbonaya Onu, Shittu, Ngigge, Amechi, Dalung, e.t.c were confirmed, Nigerians became worried. From day one, Buhari's leadership qualities had come under scrutiny. With blunt and unguarded comments and passes, he made perment enemies in the south east. Those who knew him when her ruled in the mid 80's vigorously campaigned against his election bid, claiming that a leopard can't change its spots. Nigerians were reminded of the brutality of the WAI brigade, comatose economy and press clampdown among others during this rule. Many said he was just a figure head while Tunde Idiagbon called the shots, but that is story for another day. After the first 365 days of Buhari's administration, Goodluck Jonathan was still bearing the blame of Nigeria's woes. The dollar rose above #500 for the very first time, fuel prices rose, the supposed figh against corruption began, and the TSA went into implementation. 3 years later, Bokoharam is still undefeated, (although the government claims they have been technically defeated - whatever that means), the fight against corruption has come under heavy public criticism, with observers claiming it has been selective and targeted, and jobs still remain elusive. A lot of accusations have gone Buhari's way in recent times with his handling of the Fulani headsmen and local farmers clash across the nation. Many accuse him of failing to openly come condemning the actions of his kinsmen, while hurriedly coming down hard on the IPOB group, declaring them a terrorist organization and proscribing them, while treating the headsmen with kids glove and letting them get away with so many atrocities Police and SARS harassment, opposition clampdowns, kidnappings etc are some other issues worthy of note. Today, the voices rising against Buhari's government are becoming more vocal, but there is no denying that he still has staunch supporters and still enjoys a fair share of popularity among the Nigerian populace. While I might not have been able to capture all the positives and negatives in these two administrations, I have tried to be as elaborate as possible. So, here is my question; (and this is for posterity sake) From the leadeahip we have witneased in the last last 6 years under Jonathan and Buhari, who carries the the clueless and ineffectual Buffoon title/Crown? The are way more expensive to purchase and maintain than other cars of it's size and class. People who own Minis do so cause they want a pet or baby car. You hardly see broke people driving Minis. |
