CareerRe: Surveyors, Builders, Architects & Estate Mgrs' Corner (Aspirants & Professionals) by cooldng(m): 1:17am On Mar 24, 2015
Hi Colleagues!

I studied Estate Management in FUT Minna and I am a fairly experienced facilities/property manager. I have some work experience in Nigeria and in the UK. However, the reason I have made a post here is to discuss:

1. The challenges of securing work in the UK compared to Nigeria
2. The difference in the practice of Facilities Management (FM) in both regions
3. Why Nigerians are underrated in the UK despite experience and qualifications.

Personally, I find that FM practice in the UK is more advanced than in Nigeria as we embraced it later than they did in the UK, but work description on a lot of occasions are essentially the same, depending on your specialization. I have lived in the UK a few years, been certified by the British Institute of Facilities Management and have an MBA from a UK university, despite 10 years experience (in Nigeria & UK together) I have not been considered good enough for positions I would be overqualified for back in Nigeria. So my question is why are we underrated and how can this be tackled?

P.S: I am now strongly considering a return to Nigeria as soon as I get a job offer.

Cheers everyone! Thanks for your contribution.
CareerRe: Facilities Management Careers: UK Vs Nigeria? by cooldng(op): 12:01am On Mar 24, 2015
Thanks for that insightful comment Afolag. I have also heard about GCC's demand for FM and other building/construction related professionals. Again you pointed out the issue of a "glass ceiling" for African nationalities which highlights one of my main concerns. If our experience and qualifications are not enough then what else do we need to do to make sure we are recognised internationally. It seems we need to work twice as hard to prove our worth.

Best wishes.

RomanceRe: Pls Come 2 Dis Woman's Aid Ooooooooooo Nairalanders by cooldng(m): 12:56pm On Oct 28, 2011
The Lady is really in a rather sad situation. She really ought to have taken action long before now. There are times when you really need to fight to save your marriage. It's not enough to pray, you also take action as the spirit leads to confirm your faith.

However now that a girlfriend has a baby for the man, there's nothing she can do to reverse that. She either leaves the man for a while or hang in there and really get down to the business of saving her marriage.

Hello Guys,
I have a soft spot for the 1998 BMW 5 Series and I want to get one.
The snag is, I was told it is quite expensive to maintain especially with its spare parts and fuel consumption.

Please is there anyone who can dispute this or shed more light on it before i take the plunge.

Thanks & Best wishes. wink
