You don't know the kinda of app I'm building. because you're sound in web stuffs doesn't mean it will be suitable for "all projects".

I'm a web guy too, I use the right tool for the right job.

Nothing basically, but for a new/aspiring programmer to be learning vb.net is the same thing as Nigerian universities lecturers teaching fortran to computer science students in 2016. vb.net is beyond its glory days. The world has moved on to better and more dynamic languages. Popularity of vb.net is 2016 is just around 1%. You can make your own research. I'll advice you learn either of python, ruby or javascript (nodejs). And if you are a fan of .Net (which I assume) learn c#. I'll give a similar advice to someone trying to learn iOS development, learn Swift, not Objective-C.

Clients don't pay for "popularity". They pay so as to get their problems solved. Whichever tool you decide to go with, just master it. That's all. I've developed fantastic desktop apps with VB.net.
I'm almost done with the one I'm working on, it's for an hospital.
Because VB.net isn't as popular as C# doesn't mean it ain't powerful

While it is nice to have a mentor while learning, you can also make use of some online resources like stackoverflow, codeschool, codeacademy, tutorialspoint and others to improve yourself. And just out of curiosity, why do you decide to learn vb.net? I'll advice you look beyond the Nigerian programming/tech ecosystem if you really want to be world class. I am sure if you do this you won't go with vb.net.

Generating random string

1. Lecturers in our Polytechnics are students in our these universities taking one post-graduate programme or the other.
2. Technically the university curriculum is more richer than that of the polytechnic.
3. In the university, u need a minimum of MSc or M.Tech before u can lecture. But with just a HND, u can lecture in the poly
4. The curriculum of the University is more tighter than the poly trust me... Courses that 300LEvel students are taking are the same with the ones HND 2 students are taking.
postgraduate diploma (PGD) students do more of university undergraduate courses.
