America Has Attacked the Heart of the Islamic World and Must Await Irreparable Consequence The strikes, which President Donald Trump described as a “spectacular military success,” targeted three major nuclear sites — Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan — using deep-penetration “bunker buster” bombs. The Pentagon claimed the operation severely damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure; however, officials acknowledged that the full extent of the destruction remains unclear. The attack, unprecedented in scale and timing, came just weeks after Israel launched its own bombing campaign on Iranian territory. International leaders have since voiced fears that the U.S. strikes could ignite wider conflict in an already fragile region. Reacting sharply, senior Iranian officials vowed retaliation. Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, accused Washington of overstepping its bounds. Ali Shamkhani, another adviser to Khamenei, posted on X: “Even if nuclear sites are destroyed, game isn’t over, enriched materials, indigenous knowledge, political will remain.” According to the UN’s nuclear watchdog chief, Rafael Grossi, visible craters were identified at Fordo, but there has been no radiation leak or complete underground damage assessment yet. After Israel’s recent bombing of Iran, a friend told me about a preacher who asserted that Russia might be the Gog and Magog of the Book of Ezekiel, that Iran might be one of the hostile nations pictured by the prophets, and that all of this just might be pointing toward the imminence of the literal apocalypse. “Are we going to do this again?” my friend said. By “this,” he meant the tying of prophecy charts to contemporary geopolitical events in ways that leave audiences hyped up or terrified and then exhausted and even cynical. Prophecy chart fevers usually skip a generation. One cohort might grow up hearing, as clear as the words on the page, that the Bible teaches no more than 40 years will pass between the founding of the nation of Israel and the Second Coming—but it’s harder to do that after 1988 comes and goes. A generation accustomed to hearing that the Soviet Union is almost definitely Gog and Magog will be less open to the same sort of confidence when they are told that Iraq is a new Babylon, that Saddam Hussein is a new Nebuchadnezzar, and that, therefore, the Rapture is right around the corner. The prophecy charts always come back, though, and eventually they gain an audience. Why? With human nature as complicated as it is, one shouldn’t be surprised that there are more cynical reasons and less cynical reasons. The apostle Paul warned of the time when “people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths” (2 Tim. 4:4, ESV throughout). At times, the Bible speaks about those “itching ears” as wanting heresy or the justification of sin. At other times, the problem is not the outright contradiction of the Bible but foolish controversies, genealogies, and dissensions (Titus 3:9), or the pull to “quarrel about words, which does no good” (2 Tim. 2:14). Itching ears don’t imply a group of people who necessarily want something evil, but it does point to those who want something interesting. To have the code that unlocks what’s really going on, to know that one is part of the terminal generation left standing at the end of everything—that can be exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time, like a horror movie or a roller coaster. Walker Percy wrote that modern people tend to secretly love catastrophes because a hurricane or an earthquake or a war makes a person feel suddenly alive. He argued that what kills us is not danger but a sense of meaninglessness, of everydayness. The sense that everything is falling apart can jolt us out of that kind of deadness. The protagonist Will Barrett in Percy’s novel The Last Gentleman reflects on how happy his father was when he remembered Pearl Harbor. It was not that his father was a sadist or a masochist. But when he thought about Pearl Harbor, he would suddenly have purpose and life. “War is better than Monday morning,” Will concludes. Words like “I know what’s happening is the worst thing that leads to the best thing” will gain a much readier audience than “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you” (Luke 17:20–21). Add to that the phenomenon that the monk Thomas Merton once referred to as “mental snake-handling.” Merton asked why small, isolated, persisting congregations of people take up rattlesnakes in a service. It’s because, he argued, surviving the snakes is proof, right now, that one is in God’s favor. Judgment Day is now, it is visible and palpable. People often look for such a jolt—in metaphorical and not often literal terms—when their lives are bored, over-routinized, or otherwise lacking in purpose or meaning. “In Christian terms, the mental snake-handling is an attempt to evade judgment when our conscience obscurely tells us that we are under judgment,” Merton wrote. “It represents recourse to a daring and ritual act, a magic gesture that is visible and recognized by others, which proves to us that we are right, that the image is right, that our rightness cannot be contested, and whoever contests it is a minion of the devil.” The life of faith is difficult. One must walk forward, following a voice one cannot hear audibly, into a future one cannot control. One must entrust one’s life to the mercy of God, demonstrated in a crucifixion and resurrection and ascension that others witnessed firsthand but which we have heard about and found true. A certainty about where events we care about fit into the ultimate plan, and a certainty that we are on the right side of it all, can make that faith feel almost like sight. At least for a little while. Add to that a scary situation seemingly outside of our control. What should we do about Iran? I don’t know. The possibility of a regional war with a potentially nuclear Iran is enough to set our nerves on edge. We can debate about what the United States should have done or should do going forward, though easy solutions are impossible and every possibility seems perilous. Given how easily and quickly hostilities can accelerate, it’s not irrational to worry about a potential World War III. Not many people want another war, and not many people want a nuclear Iran. How to achieve both objectives is fraught with peril and will require wisdom and prudence, much more than we seem to have in this trivial and trivializing time. That means that we have no easy answers. That’s disconcerting, and it lays on all of us a heavy responsibility to make decisions that will be good and just—whether history continues another trillion years or wraps up tomorrow. Will Iran tip us into World War III? I don’t know. Or bigger yet, could this be the moment when we see, as Jesus promised, his coming in the eastern skies? I don’t know that either. We want to see signs that we can track, to hear approaching hoofbeats by which we can know that the final judgment is upon us. Jesus, however, told us that what would shock us about his return is not the drama leading up to it but its ordinariness. People will be marrying and having children and working jobs, he said (Matt. 24:36–44). That ordinariness leads people to conclude, the apostle Peter warned, that everything would continue as it always has. They will ask, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation” (2 Pet. 3:4). That sense of illusory ease and even boredom is actually heightened over time by promise after promise that this time—I just know it—we are finally at the brink. The inner core of Jesus’ disciples wanted what we want: the definitive prophecy chart that could be timestamped by events. But Jesus wouldn’t give it. And he told them not to trust anybody who said they could (Mark 13:21–23). “When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed,” Jesus said. “This must take place, but the end is not yet” (v. 7). The time between his ascension and his second advent, Jesus said, would be rumbling with birth pains, but none of us have a sonogram to tell us when or where. Are we in the last days? Yes. Everything from the empty tomb onward are the last days (Heb. 1:2). Could Jesus return at any moment? Absolutely. But can we track that coming based on the bombing schedules of Israel or Iran? No. We should act, at every moment, whether in peace or in war, as though it might be a millisecond to Judgment Day. But we do not know when that is. Instead, we have the word of Jesus that the kingdom is advancing, invisibly like fermenting yeast or germinating seed. We have the word of Jesus that he will not leave us as orphans; he will come to us (John 14:18). |

This seismic shift was widely hailed as a unifying force, with the potential to reinvigorate the party’s fortunes. Under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, the APC has made notable gains in grassroots empowerment, positively impacting over 10,000 individuals across Delta’s 270 wards. Initiatives targeting the welfare of more than 8,100 widows further underscore the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance. These efforts have fostered a spirit of collaboration between long-standing and newly integrated APC members, earning Oborevwori widespread acclaim as a transformative leader. Supporters have expressed gratitude, offering prayers for his continued success alongside that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the coming elections. However, despite these strides, internal cracks threaten the cohesion of the APC, with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, former deputy senate president, emerging as a key source of discord. Omo-Agege’s tendency to prioritise personal ambition over party unity has long drawn criticism. During the APC’s 2023 presidential primaries, he was reportedly opposed to Tinubu’s candidacy, aligning instead with rival aspirants. Critics now warn that he may be reviving similar tactics, potentially jeopardising the APC’s efforts to secure a decisive victory in 2027. His reluctance to align with Oborevwori, whose leadership has united most party factions, further isolates him within the party structure. The APC in Delta stands at a pivotal crossroads. Internal resistance, particularly from figures like Omo-Agege, risks undermining the party’s hard-earned gains. The leadership must act decisively to reconcile differences and reinforce cohesion. Governor Oborevwori’s strategy, rooted in grassroots engagement, inclusive governance, and coordinated messaging, offers a proven template for consolidation. His defection has injected renewed strength and direction into the party, with the vast majority of members rallying behind his leadership. Only Omo-Agege’s faction remains conspicuously aloof. With the sustenance of the momentum generated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership through stakeholder collaboration and with him as captain of the APC’s ship, the party is surely sailing to victory. No man can stop the APC from overwhelming victory in 2027. The multibillion naira equipment in Delta technical colleges is currently lying idle following underutilisation of these equipment as a result of lack of teachers. South-South PUNCH gathered that most of the equipment in these colleges are lying idle and in various stages of deterioration The Modern Technical College, Asaba with state – of – the – art facilities was inaugurated in January 2023, before the former governor Ifeanyi Okowa left office. Findings revealed that the equipment are not being utilised due to the absence of teachers/instructors, hence parents are threatening to move their children away. A parent who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said he registered his child for the purpose of acquiring technical skills but it appears that the aim has been defeated. “It’s no longer technical college, it’s conventional. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the administration of President Bola Tinubu over his midterm in office, saying Nigerians, especially workers have experienced nothing but hardship, broken promises, and worsening poverty. In an appraisal of the second year anniversary of Tinubu’s presidency, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the reforms rolled out since May 29, 2023, have brought suffering rather than relief to millions of Nigerians. He said, “When President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, he promised a new dawn, bold economic reforms that would rescue Nigeria from fiscal instability and set it on a path to prosperity. “But two years later, the only thing bolder than his rhetoric is the magnitude of suffering and hardship his policies have inflicted on workers and ordinary Nigerians. “Far from renewing hope, his administration has recycled the same failed neoliberal experiments of the past, proving once again that you cannot cure a patient by prescribing the poison that made them sick in the first place.” The NLC president criticised the Tinubu-led administration for removing the petrol subsidy without adequate cushioning measures, pushing millions into economic distress. “The sudden removal of the petrol subsidy sent shockwaves through an already fragile economy, causing fuel prices to skyrocket from N187 to over N600 per litre overnight. The government claimed it was a necessary sacrifice to free up funds for development but where are the results? “Instead of reinvestment, Nigerians got inflation so vicious that families now skip meals, businesses shut down daily, and transport costs consume what little remains of workers’ wages. “The naira, left to the so-called ‘market forces,’ has collapsed in value, turning Nigeria into a bargain basement for neighbouring countries, while local industries suffocate under the weight of imported inflation. “What makes this pain even more frustrating is that none of it is new. We’ve seen this script before subsidy removals, devaluations, and IMF-approved austerity,each time sold as the bitter pill Nigeria must swallow for a brighter future. But when has it ever worked? “These same policies under past administrations only widened inequality, enriched a few, and left the majority poorer. Tinubu’s version is no different, except the suffering is deeper, the anger louder, and the government’s response more brutal.” According to the NLC, workers’ real incomes have plummeted, while arrears remain unpaid by the government. “Nigerian workers have seen their real wages obliterated. Pensioners, SMEs (facing over 150 per cent inflation in inputs), and 150 million Nigerians are now multi-dimensionally poor. “It has been two years of intimidation and harassment for Labour leaders and trade unions in Nigeria. Flagrant disregard for court orders and the criminalisation of union protests and actions have become the norm. Wage award arrears at the federal level remain unpaid, despite repeated promises. “The only notable effort is the provision of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses by the Federal Government to ease transportation for Nigerian workers but this remains grossly inadequate, hampered by severe gas infrastructure deficits.” Continuing, the NLC also accused the Tinubu-led administration of abandoning dialogue in favour of suppression. “Promised dialogue with Labour unions has been replaced with intimidation and violence. Workers demanding a living wage are met with batons and threats, while the government wallows in luxury. “The same officials who preach sacrifice travel in convoys, feast on bloated budgets, and treat public funds like personal piggy banks. Meanwhile, factories close, jobs vanish, and hunger becomes the defining feature of Tinubu’s Nigeria. “Who benefits from this folly? Not the millions of Nigerians who can no longer afford food or transport. Not the small businesses buried under the weight of rising costs.” “The real winners are the usual suspects, the oil cartels, the currency speculators, the political elite with offshore accounts, and their foreign backers at the IMF and World Bank, who have always seen Nigeria as a laboratory for their disastrous economic theories.” Beyond economic distress, Ajaero noted the escalating security crisis has rendered any policy discussion almost meaningless. “Economic performance can only be measured by how well the citizens feel. No amount of data manipulation can explain away the massive hardship that pervades our nation. Workers and ordinary Nigerians are deeply worried about the future. “In any case, in the surreal landscape of a nation grappling with escalating insecurity, discussing the intricacies of economic policy seems akin to debating the colour of curtains in a burning house. “The pervasive threat of mass kidnappings, abductions, and banditry casts an ominous shadow over society, rendering economic discourse almost absurd in the face of urgent, life-threatening crises. “While economic stability is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of governance, the reality of citizens living in constant fear with lives upended by the heinous acts of criminals demands immediate attention and action. Who will invest in such an environment except looters and plunderers? “Boko Haram and other insurgent groups have multiplied in recent years, while lives and properties are lost daily across the nation. Our nation is at war. “In such a climate, the absurdity lies in the stark disconnect between bureaucratic discussions on fiscal policy and the visceral, pressing needs of a populace caught in the crossfire of insecurity,” the union president added. The NLC concluded that the government must urgently change course if it truly intends to serve the Nigerian people. “The truth is simple: reforms that bring only pain without gain are not reforms at all. They are deformations,deliberate assaults on the poor in service of a system that rewards the powerful. “If this government truly wants to renew hope, it must abandon these cruel experiments, listen to the people, and chart a new course, one that puts Nigerians, not foreign creditors and profiteers, at the centre of policy. The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Nyesom Wike, has said that he was pulling out of all previous agreements reached to resolve the lingering crisis in the People’s Democratic Party PDP, vowing to “fight on until justice is attained”. The FCT Minister said he had pointed out to the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, the he was the architect of the party’s present problems. Wike said he told Governor Makinde that “non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly”. He made his points in a statement on Sunday, titled; “PDP Crisis: My Position,” which he personally signed, and made available to Vanguard. The Minister insisted that resolutions reached that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remained the National Secretary of PDP in tandem with the Supreme Court judgement, all legal matters relating to Rivers State be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser, the suit on the state of emergency be withdrawn forthwith, and that nobody should deviate from the agreements so reached, must be respected by all the parties involved. ‘Since 2023’ The statement read: “Since after the 2023 general election, PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders. “To stem this ugly trend, efforts have been made to arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery and enthrone fidelity to agreements with a view to stabilizing the party and moving it forward. “To this end, a meeting of the G5 was held in Lagos. “In that meeting, I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, H.E. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems, pointing out to him that non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly. At the end of the meeting, we resolved to bury the hatchet and make progress. Crisis: I believe PDP will lead again – Saraki “As a follow-up to the aforementioned meeting, there was an expanded meeting in Abuja involving H.E. Seyi Makinde, H.E. Umaru Fintri, H.E. Bala Mohammed, H.E. Bukola Saraki, and in Saraki’s guest house. In that meeting, I made it clear that I had no personal problems with H.E. Bala Mohammed, except that he hides under the facade of Chairman of PDP Governors Forum to serially renege on agreements. The resolutions “Tensions rose mightily in the meeting and it took all concerned to calm frayed nerves. At the end of the meeting, we came to some resolutions, including: “That Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the National Secretary of the PDP in tandem with the Supreme Court judgement, all legal matters relating to Rivers State must be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser, the suit on the state of emergency be withdrawn forthwith, and nobody should deviate from the agreements so reached. “In the light of the foregoing, they pleaded with me to attend the stakeholders’ meeting at the Bauchi Government Lodge, regardless of my many engagements. Bukola Saraki. “It is disheartening to note that even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee began its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated. Seyi Makinde “To my chagrin, Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP. I have since granted an interview to the effect that, that resolution of the South-East leaders cannot hold. “Again, Seyi Makinde organised some people in the National Secretariat to insist that the Deputy National Secretary should act as National Secretary, in violation of the agreement earlier reached. To attempt to give credence to this farce, a letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary, calling for a meeting of the NEC of the party. “Furthermore, the letter confirming the candidacy of the governorship candidate of the party in the forthcoming governorship elections in Anambra State, duly signed by the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu and the acting National Chairman, was portrayed as rejected by the party through a rebuttal letter signed by the National Publicity Secretary, acting on the orders of Seyi Makinde and Peter Mba. “All these actions are in complete violation of the agreements reached and would not do the party any good whatsoever. “On the 24th of May 2025, in Jos, for instance, a well publicised and properly attended zonal elective congress of the PDP was aborted because the letter inviting INEC to the congress was signed by the Deputy National Secretary of the party. INEC refused to attend because the proper signatory recognized by law, that is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was not a signatory to the invitation notice. “This is undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least. “I have painstakingly put out all these facts so that PDP members and the general public would know the truth. I have been in this party since 1998 and have worked tirelessly for the survival of this party with all my strength and it is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party. “What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so. “Most importantly, I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but since it is now obvious that they would continue to play games to the detriment of the party, as is the case in the current debacle in the North-Central zonal elections, I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. “I have decided to fight on until justice is attained.” © 2025 Vanguard Media Limited, Nigeria |

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied allegations linking him to a covert meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Rome and a purported ₦225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank. Obi was responding to a report suggesting that his May 9 trip to Rome was not ceremonial but rather a political manoeuvre intended to secure the financial future of Fidelity Bank. In six months, we can put an end to this madness; we need not politicise insecurity.’’ Addressing the issue of surrendered insurgents, Zulum stated that while not all who surrendered had reformed fully, the overwhelming majority were contributing positively. “I cannot completely say that 100% of those people who have surrendered are doing the right thing, but I want to assure you that over 99% are doing well and are not participating in the ongoing terrorism,” Zulum said He reaffirmed the need for Nigeria to embrace both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in tackling insurgency, noting that over 99% of repentant insurgents were no longer involved in terrorism. While also stressing that military force alone would never bring about a total end to insurgency, he stated: “Insurgency will never be ended by kinetic measures alone. We must ensure that the non-kinetic measures are also properly put in place. “What I mean by non-kinetic measures is social, political, and economic dimensions of the crisis. Our ongoing non-kinetic measures have yielded positive results with the support of the Nigerian military.” He acknowledged that not all 500,000-plus repentant fighters might stay reformed, but believed the system is largely working. “Yes, I believe among the 500,000 or more that have repented, I cannot rule out the possibility of fewer of them going back to the bush,” he said. He criticised the lack of equipment for the military and accused insurgents of having a superior technological advantage. Governor Zulum, however, commended the military’s role in supporting peace-building efforts. “I want to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for the support they have been rendering to our non-kinetic measures,” Zulum said. He urged President Bola Tinubu to pay attention to ground-level intelligence and professional advice from the military. “We should not politicise insecurity. The President needs to listen to the people who can tell him the right thing. The President should listen to the Army. “We must prioritise security. National and sub-national governments must pool resources together to procure equipment. “The Army does not have the necessary equipment on ground to fight insurgency. Right now, the insurgents are using drones to fight soldiers on the ground. “A few days ago, I visited the Chief of Army Staff. He said he is looking for about 32 drones and he would end the insurgency. “My plea is that let us deal with this matter decisively. The president of Nigeria should listen to those that can distinguish between the right and wrong. Those that can tell him the right thing and not sycophants. “He needs to understand what is happening on the ground. A few days ago, I said there is insurgency in Borno State. I commended the Federal Government for doing very well and that we should come together to resolve the issues. “Some people said there is no insecurity in Borno State. We should not politicise insecurity,’’ Zulum said. On state police debate, the governor said the existing security apparatus should be strengthened, rather than create a new policing system. Borno State is the epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency, which has led to the death of more than 50,000 people, and the displacement of millions from homes since 2009. Recall that Governor Zulum had last Sunday, begged the Federal Government not to allow Marte, the only local government free of Boko Haram control, fall to the insurgents. Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, the governor had said: “Marte was resettled about four years ago but unfortunately, over the last three days, it was ransacked and displaced again. ‘’About 20,000 people left Marte for Dikwa. This huge number poses a threat, as allowing them to stay in the camp may make many of the younger ones vulnerable to recruitment by the insurgents. “We returned to marte yesterday (Saturday) and spent the night there, with the support of the Nigerian Army and our volunteers. The community has now been resettled for the second time. Still, my appeal to the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army is that we do everything possible to maintain this town on the ground. “Hitherto, Marte Local Government Area comprised over 300 towns and villages. Now, we have only one remaining. If we cannot maintain this one, then we risk losing the entire local government area to the insurgents, which would be very disastrous. I believe we must not allow this to happen. ‘’Therefore, I am calling on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to work together with us to hold our ground and ensure this single town in the LGA remains.” Our borders porous, some insurgents not Nigerians —Akpabio Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, yesterday gave insight into the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in some parts of the country, saying some of the insurgents and bandits are not from Nigeria. According to him, the insurgents and bandits return to their countries after striking unprepared communities. Speaking after discussions on a motion on resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas of Adamawa State and other North-East states in Abuja yesterday, Akpabio called for vigilance, especially against the backdrop of the nation’s porous borders. He said: “From what the Chief Whip is describing, it will look like there must be continual vigilance because, like you said, any time the fight abates and they think the military has relaxed, then they take them unawares by sporadic attacks. “When they are unprepared, they end up losing their lives. Our borders are very porous So anytime they escape from Nigeria, because some of them are not from Nigeria, they still find their way in at any time to attack our people.” On its part, the Senate asked the Federal Government to establish a military base in Hong Local Government Area to reinforce the existing personnel of the Army and other sister security agencies. The Senate, while commending what it described as the brilliant performance of law enforcement agents, said a military base will stop Boko Haram insurgency from spreading to wider communities in the north and beyond. It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide relief materials to cushion the effects of the attacks on the affected communities, just as it observed a minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives. Resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion, titled “Resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas, Adamawa State and other North-East States,” sponsored by Senator Amunu Iya Abbas (PDP, Adamawa Central), and co-sponsored by all the senators from the North-East. In his presentation, Senator Abbas said: “The Senate notes that the incidences of successive Boko Haram attacks on communities in Hong LGA left thousands of innocent people homeless and displaced. “Further notes that the frequent attacks directly affects the following communities among others; February 25, 2025, Kwapre and Zah were under attack and houses were burnt, schools destroyed, and many people injured. “April 15, 2025, Banga and Lar communities were attacked, five were killed, houses and churches burnt down; on April 26, 2025, Kwapre in Yadul district Garaha ward was attacked again. This time, 11 members of the local vigilante were killed, houses and public properties were destroyed. “On May 16, 2025, (just last week) Kulda in Yadul District, Garaha Ward was attacked, 16 people were killed, over 90% of the houses, including places of worship, were burned down and Mayo Ladde community in Gaya ward was also attacked. The attack left 6 people dead. “Also notes that neighbouring Gombi LGA has as well been under Boko Haram attacks. January 17, 2025, four people were killed; February 17, 2025, one hunter was killed. “Aware that the resurgence of Boko Haram activities cut across the North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. “Worried that the unfortunate activities of Boko Haram affect the economic activities of the affected areas and, by extension, the whole region and the country at large. People in the affected areas no longer go to the farms or engage in normal trading activities. “Disturbed that if not proactively checked, the Boko Haram insurgency is capable of spreading to wider communities in the north and beyond.” In his contribution, the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno said: “ I also want to seize this opportunity to commend the Nigerian military for their determination and enthusiasm in the fight against boko Haram insurgency and for the political will and support given to the Nigeria military by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Tinubu, toward discharging their mandate “Two-third of local government in Borno and Yobe states have said they are under the sub-control of Boko Haram, I don’t know. But as a result of the political will by the government and support, as well as the same determination and enthusiasm displayed by the military.and the gallantry . Boko Haram was decapitated, the local governments that were under the firm control of the Boko Haram insurgents were liberated and Nigerian authority was restored. “Before, I could think of going to my constituency or my hometown but today, I can go to my hometown and sleep. “Yes. It’s as a result of the fight, the gallantry and resilience displayed by the military but now, there is a resurgence of Boko Haram, to the extent that they attack our military formations, dislodged the soldiers and cart away military equipment. The Corps Marshal of the Nigeria Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has advocated the inclusion of separate lanes on major roads in the country, for use by cyclists in order to safeguard them from the busy traffic and other risks. Speaking on the occasion to mark the United Nations (UN) scheme which was jointly co-ordinated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) that was set up in 2007 to biennially create awareness on road traffic deaths and injuries, Mohammed noted that his suggestions is in line with the theme for this year’s event tagged ‘Make walking safe, make cycling safe.’ He raised the alarm over the rise in the rate of traffic crashes resulting to loss of lives in recent years and urged all road users to be more responsible in the use of road and traffic signs as well as advised drivers to be cautious of vulnerable road users like children, the aged and physically disabled persons. The FRSC boss remarked that the commission is working with government agencies, communities and partners to construct more pedestrian bridges, sidewalks, zebra-crossing and bicycle lanes on Nigerian roads (like the BRT lanes in Lagos state), in order to protect pedestrians and cyclists and indeed all vulnerable ones from preventable road accidents. He added that the FRSC, through its Safety Strategy Policy, supports the development of non-motorised transportation policy to enhance safety at critical locations and warned that any motorists driving beyond 30km/hr in any urban area risks being apprehended and possibly, prosecuted.
