Some elders in Rivers State, under the aegis of Concerned Elders of Rivers State have called for an unreserved apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike following his recent derogatory remarks against former Governor Peter Odili, a respected elder statesman and founder of PAMO University of Medical Sciences. The demand was issued in a strongly worded statement signed by prominent leaders of the state, including former Governor Celestine Omehia, Prince Uche Secondus, former Deputy Governor of the state, Tele Ikuru, former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Austin Opara, Senator Ngoji Denton West, former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and Senator Lee Maeba. Other signatories include Dr Dam Jaja, Alabo David Briggs, Dr Shedrack Akolokwu, Dr Reginald Okeya, Ambassador Oji Ngofa, Emma Okah, Alabao Senator Adawari Pepple, Ambrose Nwuzi, and Emeh Glory Emeh. The elders expressed deep dismay at Wike’s recent insults directed at Dr. Odili, his family, and his medical institution during an event at a church in Ororgwe, adding that such behaviour is not only unbecoming but also stands in contrast to the time-honoured traditions of mutual respect, especially respect for elders and deference to wisdom and experience that Rivers State holds dearly. |

Nasir el-Rufai is just being clever by half in expressing his frustration at not being made a minister by attacking the funding of a rail project in Lagos by the Federal Government. Under Buhari, Nigeria took out a $2 billion loan to build a railway in Niger Republic. Did el-Rufai complain then? Not at all! Today, that same Niger is now hostile towards Nigeria. If we can build a railway worth $2 billion (which was 10% of Niger Republic's GDP as at then) for a foreign country, simply because General Buhari's father was from Niger Republic, why shouldn't the Federal Government contribute towards building a railway in Lagos State? After all, 8% of Nigeria's population lives in Lagos, while 35% of our GDP comes from Lagos, which contributes ₦44.17 trillion to our economy. How much does Niger Republic contribute to our GDP? Did the Federal Government under Jonathan not also spend $1.2 billion building the Abuja-Kaduna superfast 187-kilometre railway? Did el-Rufai register a complaint then? Even el-Rufai himself used government money to pay herdsmen not to kill (they collected the money and increased the killing). But he does not want government money to go towards building infrastructure to benefit Nigerians? Secondary schools are constitutionally the responsibility of the Federal Government, yet under Jonathan, the Federal Government spent $769 million in building 165 Almajiri Schools in every northern state. Why did El-Rufai not complain then? Why only complain now that the Federal Government is contributing towards a rail project in Lagos State, Nigeria's commercial capital? In the New Year, state actors who wish to remain relevant as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration progressively inches towards its midterm are likely to step up their strategies through the formation of new alliances and realignment of forces preparatory to the 2027 general elections. In doing so, some political players will consolidate their hold on power, while the ensuing process may also throw up new faces. Below is the list of gladiators Nigerians will watch out for in the months ahead. Tinubu All eyes will be on President Tinubu to implement his ambitious budget. Apart from its bogus figures, the budget also proposes some mouth-watering relief measures aimed at addressing the hardship in the country. Among other things, the budget has projected reducing the current inflation rate from 35 per cent to 15 per cent. MARK To most analysts, this sounds rather rhetorical. As Nigerians grapple with the challenges of the economy, insecurity, and rising food inflation, all eyes will be on the president to see how he will surmount these problems. During the height of the food crisis that faced the nation in the outgoing year, several hunger protests were held to compel the government to review some of the policies believed to be creating hardship for the common people like the fuel subsidy removal. However, nothing significant was done to alleviate the difficulties arising from the reforms of the administration. In the wake of the #EndBadGovernance protests that rocked many states of the federation, President Tinubu announced the gathering of a 30-day national youth conference to address critical issues facing the youths, including unemployment, education, and political participation. Soludo This has been fixed for February 2025. “The conference aims to provoke meaningful dialogue and empower our young people to participate actively in nation-building. “By ensuring that their voices are heard in shaping the policies that impact their lives, we are creating a pathway for a brighter tomorrow,” the president had said in his October broadcast. Nigerians will be looking forward to seeing the results of some of these initiatives. Damagum Since the loss of the last presidential election, the People Democratic Party (PDP) has been embroiled in leadership crisis. As a result, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has been roundly blamed for the lingering crisis. However, to give the party a new leash of life, some stakeholders have called for the removal of the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, but the doomsday has been postponed till the party’s February convention. The decision to hold the 99th NEC meeting of the party in the first week of February, 2025, was taken at the PDP Governors Forum held in Jos, which also had in attendance Damagum and other leaders. They also passed a vote of confidence in his leadership. Political watchers will like to see the politics that will play out during the scheduled February meeting. Damagum assumed the position of acting national chairman after former Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, was ousted by the court for failing to enact necessary reforms. Some people believe that Damagum is being used by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to fight a proxy war against the sympathisers of the presidential candidate of the party in the last general elections, Atiku Abubakar. Bukola Saraki Following the ouster of Ayu, some concerned stakeholders, including the Plateau State governor, Caleb Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, alongside other bigwigs from the North-central, have called for the return of the party’s national chairmanship to their zone to complete its tenure. Consequently, some governors and members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of the PDP are said to be putting pressure on a former Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to accept to lead the party in the capacity of national chairman. The move is part of the plan for a total reorganisation of the party. Whether or not he will accept the offer, time will tell. David Mark Another name that is being touted as a possible replacement for Damagum is Senator David Mark. There has been underground work to draft the former Senate President into the national chairmanship race. The same force behind the plot to remove Damagum is also the same people believed to be spearheading the candidature of Mark for the job. As they are angling to get rid of the acting national chairman of the party, they are also working for Mark to replace him as the substantive chairman. Apart from the retired Brigadier General, a former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam is also said to have indicated interest in the position. These are intrigues that will shape the future of the PDP as a vibrant opposition in the months ahead. Fubara Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are the two dramatis personae dominating the politics of the oil-rich state. Earlier in the year, the face-off between the duo had led to the defection of 27 members of the state House of Assembly loyal to Wike to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The ensuing litigation battle is still ongoing. A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has adjourned till January 21, 2025, to rule on applications in a suit filed by the Labour Party seeking to declare vacant the seats of the 27 lawmakers. The suit also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election to fill in the vacant seats of the lawmakers to enable the LP and other interested parties to participate. As the peace deal earlier brokered by President Tinubu could not resolve the impasse, the final judgment of the judiciary will determine the stability of the tenure of Governor Fubara. Wike Wike is one of the gladiators around which the crisis bedeviling the PDP revolves on. Due to his recalcitrant attitude towards all entreaties, political watchers and public affairs commentators view the FCT Minister as a lost member of the PDP, working to weaken the party. However, the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has revealed that the body will persist in its efforts to end the crisis in the party by holding a meeting with the former Rivers State governor in January. Wabara has also expressed concern over the inability of the NWC to convene NEC meeting, noting that the delay is eroding the trust and confidence of PDP members. People will like to see how far the committee can go in reconciling Wike with the party. Soludo The tenure of the incumbent governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo, will end in 2025 and the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has fixed Saturday, November 8, 2025 for the Anambra State governorship election. The formal notice for the election was published on November 13, 2024, in line with the requirements of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates that the notice for any election be issued no later than 360 days before the election date. Soludo, who is seeking a re-election, will be slugging it out with candidates of other opposition parties notably Labour Party and APC. There is anxiety that the lingering leadership crisis facing the All Progressives Grant Alliance (APGA), the platform upon which Soludo contested and won the governorship seat, may affect the chances of his victory in the forthcoming poll. Kwankwaso Lately, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has been searching for a new alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections. His recent visit to his counterpart in the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has fuelled the speculation. All things being equal, they might resolve to work together to form a new party to wrest power from President Tinubu in 2027. On what terms and condition, nobody can predict until it happens. To a large extent, the workability of such a merger arrangement based on the current permutations is a remote possibility. Lack of trust will always be an issue between Obi and Kwankwaso, as neither of them will be willing to concede his ambition to become president of the country. Peter Obi The Obidient Movement which served as a formidable driving force for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign in the last general election is still lurking around the corner waiting for the right time to commence mobilization. Currently, Obi represents the voice of opposition against the present administration of President Tinubu. Many Nigerians will be looking forward to seeing the role he will play in holding the government accountable to the people as the policies of the administration take its toll on the masses. However, there is fear that the LP’s crisis could deal a death knell on Obi’s ambition if not properly managed. Atiku The presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is fast losing steam. But the hardy perennial contender is never tired of contesting. The seemingly insurmountable crisis that led to the defeat of the PDP in the last general elections has been roundly blamed on his obsession with power, leading to the current impasse between him and Wike. Atiku has allegedly thrown his weight behind the plot to unseat Damagum. This has divided the 13 state governors elected on the PDP platform into two camps. While seven governors, led by the Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed, are pushing for Damagum’s removal, the remaining others led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, are supporting his retention. Regardless of the mounting opposition against his presidential ambition, Atiku is still eyeing the presidential ticket of the party for the 2027 general elections. By and large, how the clash of interest between the two titans will be resolved will determine the fortune of the PDP in any future election. © 2024 The Sun Nigeria – All Right Reserved. |
The recent defection of the member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Delta State, Erhiatake Ibori-Seunu, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party , PDP, may upset political arrangements in the federal constituency if she desires re-election to the House. The constituency is a combination of two powerful political areas, Ethiope East and Ethiope West. The representative of the federal constituency in the House of Representatives has always been rotated between the two areas under the PDP, an arrangement many have termed crucial to avoid unnecessary political bickering and rivalry. Although Ethiope West had the first shot at the House between 1999 and 2003, it was not from the PDP. In 1999, Halims Agoda from Ethiope West first represented the constituency on the platform of the All Peoples Party, APP. In 2003, he re-contested and won on the platform of the PDP. He was re-elected again, thus completing three terms, two of which were on the platform of the PDP. At the end of his two terms under the PDP, power shifted to Ethiope East with Akpodiogaga Emeyese of the same party representing the constituency in the House of Representatives. Loveth Idisi from the same Ethiope East in the PDP took over from Emeyese, thus completing the second tenure of Ethiope East in the House of Representatives. Power then shifted back to Ethiope West, with Ben Igbakpa from the local government and the PDP organically taking over from Idisi of Ethiope East. Igbakpa could not secure a second term as he lost to Erhiatake Ibori-Seunu, also from Ethiope West, after a keenly contested primary. But it did not matter to the party since Igbakpa’s successor was from his Ethiope West local government area, and luckily for the party, Seunu-Ibori was from its fold. Barely one year after Ibori-Seunu dumped the PDP for the APC, some members of the PDP in her federal constituency maintained that her defection was part of a calculated move to secure the APC’s ticket to be re-elected by 2027. She has not said anything about re-contesting for the same seat, probably because it may be too early to begin campaigning for such. The PDP, after a meeting of its leaders and stakeholders in Ethiope East, vowed not to concede the turn of the Ethiope East block by 2027, insisting that the lawmaker in the House of Representatives must shift to the area. The communique issued at the end of the meeting partly read: “That since the creation of the Ethiope Federal Constituency, which comprises Ethiope East and Ethiope West Local Governments, Ethiope West Local Government has produced the Representative of the Federal House of Representatives for a record 20 years: Halims Ochuko Agoda (1999-2011, three terms of 12 years), Ben Igbakpa (2019-2023, one term of 4 years), Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Seunu (2023—incumbent). While Ethiope East local government which is the largest and most populous among the two local governments of the federal constituency has only produced just two Representatives: Akpodiogaga Sunny Emeyese (2011-2015, one term of 4 years) and Loveth Idisi (2015-2019, one term of 4 years), which together amounts to eight years. As such, Ethiope East Local Government has decided unanimously that, come 2027, the Member representing the Federal Constituency must be from Ethiope East Local Government, for equity and fairness’ sake.” The defection of Suenu-Ibori to the APC has further depleted the strength of the PDP in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s senatorial district. While Etanabene Benedict of the Labour Party represents the Uvwie, Okpe, and Sapele Federal Constituency, which is the governor’s primary federal constituency, the other two federal constituencies within the senatorial zone are represented by the APC in the National Assembly. Francis Waive of the APC represents the Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency, and now Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, who won on the platform of the PDP, is now of the APC. The senatorial zone is also represented in the Senate by Chief Ede Dafinone of the APC. He took over from the immediate past Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, also of the APC, who was the governorship candidate of the party in the last general elections. Interestingly, Suenu-Ibori, as the name reveals, is the daughter of Chief James Ibori, a two-term governor of the state and chieftain of the PDP. It was reported that the former governor, who largely influenced the emergence of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as governor of the state, parted ways with him over the choice of who should be Okowa’s successor from the Delta Central zone within the PDP. Chief Ibori, a founding member of the PDP, has remained in the party despite the outcome of the last governorship election, where his choice did not emerge. However, he has been relatively inactive in the party. He was governor of the state at the time President Bola Tinubu of the APC was governor of Lagos State in the defunct Alliance for Democracy, AD. He has been relating healthily with President Bola Tinubu. In the estimation of some members of the PDP, the body language of the former governor reveals his soul has since left the party. Chief Ibori has not made any public comment since his daughter defected to the APC. Probably, he sees that she is of age politically to decide her actions, having been a member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ethiope West State Constituency. Suenu-Ibori defected with some prominent members of the PDP across the federal constituency to her new party. The PDP, in the communique at the end of the meeting of leaders of the party in Ethiope East local government, also directed ward chairmen of the party to take necessary actions on any vacancy in the party’s executive due to the defection. “Those who decamped and, until their defection, were holding any position in the party or an appointment is advised to resign with immediate effect. If otherwise, the Ward Chairmen of the 11 Wards are to effect their replacements immediately,” the communique read. Meanwhile, the PDP has approached a Federal High Court in Warri in suit number FHC/WR/CS/126 to, among other things, declare Ibori-Suenu’s seat in the House of Representatives vacant. It seems the stage has been set for a fierce political battle between the PDP and the APC over who will represent the constituency in the House of Representatives by 2027 if Hon. Suenu-Ibori decides to contest for the same seat in 2027. Money may be a major deciding factor, and already some politicians from Ethiope East fear that the area may lack the financial muscle to insist on power rotation. According to those who spoke to Sunday Vanguard, unless Oborevwori stands with the area, it will be safe to say that it will be a smooth ride to victory for Suenu-Ibori if she decides to remain in the House for a second term. Nevertheless, some have said in politics, you never say it is over until it is completely over. © 2024 Vanguard Media Limited, Nigeria |
Nigeria's national power grid is prone to frequent collapses, with the resulting power shortages proving an obstacle to economic growth and investment in Africa's most populous nation. The World Bank estimates that the Nigerian economy loses $29 billion a year due to its unstable power supply, which causes electricity blackouts across the country. Here is why Nigeria's grid is failing. WHAT CAUSES BLACKOUTS? Nigeria's aging power infrastructure is at the heart of the crisis. Transmission lines and substations, some of which are more than 40 years old, are prone to frequent failures. The government-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reports average transmission losses of 7.79 megawatts for every 100 megawatts injected into the grid. Years of under-investment have left the grid susceptible to tripping when demand fluctuates unexpectedly, said Lagos-based energy lawyer Ayodele Oni. Compounding this is vandalism and attacks on transmission infrastructure, especially in Nigeria's north. In the last two years, TCN recorded 108 attacks on its towers and lines. GENERATION GAP Another major factor is that Nigeria, with a population of more than 200 million people, only generates and distributes a third of its installed generation capacity of 13,500 megawatts. And despite having the world's seventh-largest gas reserves, Nigeria produces less than 10% of the electricity generated by South Africa, a country with a population a third the size. More than 75% of Nigeria's electricity comes from gas-fired power plants, primarily located in its southern region. The remainder is generated by hydroelectric stations in the north. Advertisement · Scroll to continue Power generation firms feed electricity into the national grid, controlled by the federal government, which distributes it through 11 regional distribution companies to consumers. IS THERE A FIX? More than a decade after Nigeria privatised its electricity sector, Nigeria's grid has barely improved. But last year the government allowed its 36 states to generate and transmit their own power. States like Lagos, the nation's commercial hub, and five others have already begun developing independent power markets. Advertisement · Scroll to continue The government is also working with the World Bank to build 1,000 mini solar grids to expand power access in rural areas "A more resilient approach is needed in Nigeria to incorporate decentralised energy sources, such as solar power paired with storage, to complement the national grid," said Sherisse Alexander, chief business officer at independent power producer WATT Renewable Corporation. © 2024 Reuters. These 2 Stocks Are About to Join the S&P 500. Should You Buy Them Now? When a stock is added to a prominent index like the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) or the Nasdaq Composite Index ($NASX), it is often a positive milestone. This inclusion brings significant inflows from exchange-traded funds and other index funds that track major indices. Inclusion also serves as a testament to the company's consistent performance and growth across revenue, profits, and operations. With this in mind, two new stocks are expected to gain entry into the coveted S&P 500 on Dec. 23. Should investors add them to their portfolios? Let's find out. S&P 500 Stock #1: Workday Founded in 2005, Workday (WDAY) provides enterprise software solutions designed to help organizations manage their financial and human resources operations. Over 10,000 organizations use its platform, including more than 50% of the Fortune 500. Its market capitalization currently stands at $72.2 billion. WDAY stock is down slightly on a year-to-date basis. However, the company has demonstrated impressive growth in its revenue and earnings over the past three years. The most recent quarter saw the company beat both revenue and earnings estimates. In the third quarter of its fiscal 2025, Workday reported revenue of $2.16 billion which denoted growth of 15.8% from the previous year. It also reported a 15.8% rise in subscription revenue to $1.959 billion. Further, its earnings increased 21.2% from the prior year to $1.89 per share, comfortably outpacing the consensus estimate of $1.78 per share. Notably, this marked the 10th consecutive quarter of earnings beats from the company. Another positive is that its 12-month subscription revenue backlog was up 15.4% to $6.98 billion, and its total subscription revenue backlog was up 20.3% to $22.19 billion. Net cash from operating activities for the quarter stood at $406 million compared to $451 million in the year-ago period with free cash flows of $359 million. Overall, the company closed the quarter with a cash balance of $1.3 billion, much higher than short-term debt levels of $102 million. Complementing its strong balance sheet are its strategic initiatives, which are driving growth and innovation. For example, the adoption rate of Workday's AI solutions is steadily increasing. The company said that in Q3, 30% of its customer expansions include one of its AI tools. Recruiter Agent – one of those tools – has boosted the average selling price of main recruiting tool by approximately 150%. Additionally, Workday's significant presence in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) industry solidifies its competitive position. With around 20% market share as of its Q2, it is the largest company in the space, operating across 175 countries and serving 70 million users. As a Fortune 500 company, Workday provides solutions to over 50% of other Fortune 500 companies, underscoring the high caliber and scale of its clients. Thus, analysts have deemed the stock a “Moderate Buy” with a mean target price of $288.27 which indicates upside potential of about 6% from current levels. Out of 35 analysts covering the stock, 23 have a “Strong Buy” rating, 9 have a “Hold” rating, 2 have a “Moderate Buy” rating and 1 has a “Strong Sell” rating. S&P 500 Stock #2: Apollo Global Founded in 1990, Apollo Global (APO) specializes in private equity, credit, and real assets, managing investments across various asset classes. The firm is a leader in permanent capital solutions, with a substantial portion of its assets under management (AUM) comprised of long-duration funds. The company currently commands a market cap of $101 billion. APO stock has witnessed a significant rally this year, soaring 89.7% on a YTD basis. The stock also offers a dividend yield of 1.02%. In the most recent quarter, Apollo reported a beat on both revenue and earnings. Revenue jumped almost 200% to $7.78 billion with net investment income of $4.1 billion serving as the primary contributor to overall growth. Earnings for the quarter came in at $1.85 per share which denoted growth of 8.2% from the year-ago period. Total AUM stood at $733 billion at the end of the quarter, rising from $631 billion in the previous year. Fee-generating AUM also witnessed an increase, growing from $468 billion to $551 billion. The boom in the private credit market is particularly advantageous for Apollo. Its leading position and significant scale enable it to fully capitalize on a multibillion-dollar growth opportunity. Private credit has consistently proven to be a superior asset class, delivering higher returns than equities over time, while also exhibiting less volatility. Apollo is also optimistic about a wide range of investable opportunities. The company sees trillions of dollars in potential growth tied to emerging trends such as decarbonization, deglobalization, and digital infrastructure. Overall, Apollo estimates its addressable market to be around $40 trillion, spanning areas like corporate loans and rental car financing. In addition, Apollo is making significant strides in wealth management, supported by a team of nearly 200 investment professionals. The company has launched 10 products in the semi-liquid category, which are generating approximately $1 billion in monthly sales. Finally, Apollo’s insurance subsidiary, Athene, is a market leader in annuities. Athene has achieved double-digit annual growth over the past decade, including an impressive 20%-30% growth rate in the last two years. This strong performance underscores its importance to Apollo’s overall strategy. Considering this, analysts have assigned a rating of “Strong Buy” for the stock with a mean target price that has already been surpassed. The high target price of $230 denotes upside potential of about 29% from current levels. Out of 20 analysts covering the stock, 14 have a “Strong Buy” rating, 5 have a “Hold” rating and 1 has a “Moderate Buy” rating. © 2024 Barchart.com, Inc. All Rights reserved |
